Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the November Edition of The Rugby Register What a busy October that was, I feel like I blinked and almost missed it! We have a teenager in the house - eek! India was 13 mid October and now I feel old. She was just over 2 yrs old when I started running this magazine and she still, from right back in the beginning, chooses the competition winners each and every month. Catherine collates all the correct entries (there have been a few wrong ones lately too oops!) and then gives India the file to randomly choose the winner. I did ask her if she wanted to handover the reigns to her younger sister but she said ‘definitely not’. I’m secretly pleased that she wants to continue :-) Again we have a very busy Community News double pager with a wide range of charity events happening over the coming weeks - be sure to take a look. Its great to see so many things happening locally, be sure to help support them. There is still time for your children/grandchildren to enter our ‘Design A Front Cover’ competition. It’s been so successful in the past, I know lots of children love entering it and seeing their pictures in the magazine. So flick through the magazine and if you have a little one who might be interested in entering you can find all the
details on page 37. Take a look at our feature ‘Shop Local, Shop Anne Christmas, Shop Rugby’ in this edition giving you a taste of what wonderful local independent shops & businesses we have here in our town for you to do your Christmas Shopping. There really is something for everyone and what you will get, unlike online, is wonderful customer service, you don’t have to wait for it to be delivered and just as importantly you will be helping to support these businesses that keep our town thriving. Without shoppers support, Town Centres can become desolate places with no shops & no soul and none of us want that for Rugby. Check out the 4 page feature and Shop Local this Christmas. Our newly refreshed website is now live, take a look: www.rugbyregister.co.uk Have a wonderful November everyone,
Anne xx

A warm welcome awaits you at
The Canal Lounge
The Canal Lounge based at Bridge 66, alongside Clifton Cruisers has been serving up drinks & tasty treats for some years. More recently The Canal Lounge has been taken back in-house, now managed by Dee along with Clifton Cruisers and has had a recent makeover and lots of investment making huge improvements including a heated floor, new roof, installation of a bar serving draught beer, plus a new high end coffee machine. More improvements are planned over the coming months & years too! The Canal Lounge welcomes dogs on leads and has some lovely local walks nearby to enjoy as part of your visit with a tow path which takes you through to Brownsover. Open from 9am, 7 days a week you can order a full English breakfast right up until late afternoon! Lunches, snacks, wonderful homemade cakes, a variety of teas and coffees and Afternoon Tea are also on offer as well as alcohol from 11am, this includes Organic beers: Shedhead & Leaky Bucket as well as others. Locally sourced produce is used wherever possible. If it’s Afternoon Tea you fancy, just call ahead and book in advance. The very popular Sunday lunches are served 12-3.30pm and need to be booked in advance as these get very busy. They can be made gluten free – including the Yorkshire pudding! (Must be requested at the time of booking). Special dietary requirement can be catered for by telephoning in advance too; Vegetarian, vegan, diary free and gluten free. The Canal Lounges’ cook & baker is Jackie who is highly trained and experienced, her homemade cakes are a definite ‘must try’! This is a very relaxed, rustic, dog friendly environment serving lovely food, cakes & drinks on a working wharf with nearby walks along the tow path, making your visit to The Canal Lounge the perfect start or finish point.

• There’s still time to plant daffodil bulbs and other spring flowering bulbs for a magnificent start to next years display. • Plant tulip bulbs now to prevent Tulip Fire infection. • Plant up a terracotta pot of hyacinth bulbs for a simple but stunning display next spring. • Plant Magnolias now for a beautiful Spring display • Now is the ideal time to plant a magnolia tree for a beautiful spring display. Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suffered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year. Continue to lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing. Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour. Before the birds eat them all, cut a few stems of holly with berries for making Christmas garlands. Stand them in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot where our feathered friends can’t take them. Start to plant bare-root roses - they can be planted any time between now and March. Plant heathers, grasses and trailing ivy in pots for winter colour. Plant out spring bedding displays of pansies, violas and primulas.

Make A Clean Sweep....
Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter It’s probably not something that you think about often, but the importance of a fully functioning chimney should never be understated. Regular chimney sweeping is a critical step toward achieving this. All the smoke and noxious gases - such as carbon monoxide - generated during combustion in a fireplace need somewhere to go, and a clean, unimpeded chimney is what keeps them from entering back into your home. Over time, it’s likely your chimney will collect large amounts of soot or creosote, as well as becoming blocked or clogged by debris - such as cobwebs and birds nests. Regular chimney sweeping will keep your chimney clear, preventing dangerous chimney fires and allowing it to function at optimal efficiency.

But how can you tell if your chimney is due for a sweep? Simply keep an eye out for these warning signs: • • • • • •
Does smoke fill the room when a fire is lit? Do you detect any bad odours when the fireplace isn’t being used? Are there visible tar deposits in your chimney? Is soot dropping into your fireplace? Does your fire burn poorly or take a while to start? Are there signs of animals present?
If you detect any of the above signs, you should contact a reputable chimney sweep immediately. Blocked, dirty and clogged fireplaces can experience significantly reduced performance, and pose a serious threat to your household the longer they are left untouched.

range of movement, is used more by Osteopaths than Chiropractors. The philosophy behind osteopathy is that there is lack of circulation at the site of the injury and this dictates the type of manipulative procedure. Chiropractic and osteopathy have similar backgrounds and some techniques used are almost identical. Both disciplines are conducted by highly qualified professionals and the treatments offered have proved very beneficial for many people. Always remember the importance of good nutrition for your overall health. A healthy diet can help alleviate pain by reducing inflammation and raising levels of serotonins. Include bright coloured vegetables and fruit, oatmeal, seeds and oily fish.

The sugar industry is highly d . e n d b a n se erstaggressive in protecting its current position. ts capolitical ndand men e and u ar you Sugar produces the following reaction in the body. Every
time we eat anything sugary, our blood sugar levels rise which
triggers the pancreas to release the hormone insulin. Insulin is needed to balance our blood sugar levels but it also means excess sugar is quickly converted into fat which is usually deposited around the belly. These fats known as triglycerides, spill into the bloodstream, raising the risk of clogged arteries and heart attacks. The more often insulin is released by the pancreas to process the sugar, the less efficient it may become which can ultimately lead to insufficient production of insulin, resulting in Type 2 diabetes. The problem is linked with obesity which particularly in children is usually associated with high energy dense foods such as biscuits, cakes, fast food, chocolate, fizzy sweet drinks. It is important to reduce your consumption of refined sugar to help improve your overall health. Sugar is added in unexpected places for example savoury ready-made meals, soups, sandwich spreads, ketchup, baked beans, and cough mixtures. Slimming products are often loaded with sugar. The following is a brief list of high sugar foods. 1. Ready-Meals - a jar of ready-made Bolognese sauce can contain 7g of sugar per 100g which is double that of baked beans. 2. Yogurts – can contain tablespoons of sugar – especially the snack-style tubs and mini-pots branded for babies. 3. Baby Foods – even organic varieties can contain lots of sugar, it is a key preservative. 4. Biscuits, Deserts and Cakes – these are loaded with sugar, even the so called healthy varieties. 5. Chocolate – it is best to choose varieties that contain 70 per cent cocoa, preferably plain, as it contains less sugar and more antioxidants. 6. Breakfast Cereals – avoid any that are coated with sugar, honey, or are “frosted”, even crispy muesli can contain lots of sugar. 7. Drinks – Fizzy drinks can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar each serving; also avoid sweetened juices and squash. We do not need refined sugar in any of its many disguises; it is not a health food so please endeavour to reduce your intake of refined sugar. You will soon feel the benefits! We offer impartial financial advice on many aspects of both personal and business needs with our bespoke financial planning service. We provide advice on mortgages, buy to lets, savings and investments, all aspects of retirement planning (personal pensions, company pensions, drawdown pensions and annuities), life and critical illness planning, income protection, insurances and estate planning. We often find that people have old, out of date policies and pensions which have not been reviewed for many years which may not be providing the best value for money anymore and by simply updating to a newer cheaper plan or even just altering the investment funds within an existing plan the potential returns can be dramatically improved.

Recipes From Three Bistro Pancakes
American Pancakes Sing with me in a generic Puerto Rican accent; ‘I like to be in America, O.K. by me in America, Everything free in America’!
The shrewd may have deduced from the opening that I want to live in America. I have always loved America and Americans. I have always found them funny and engaging and they never make you or a situation feel awkward the way we expertly do in England. They always seem to speak with such unwavering conviction and purpose even when what they are saying warrants neither. I also love American food and have rarely had a bad meal there other than then one I had at the top of the stratosphere in Las Vegas where I wouldn’t and didn’t pay the $150-a-head extortion for the undercooked and frankly shabby ‘worse than a school dinner’ they served me. American pancakes are one of my favourite breakfasts, especially with bacon and maple syrup although I have recently been eating them with berries or baking bananas into them with a drizzle of honey. To date I have never found anywhere in the UK that actually does them properly or doesn’t serve the horrible pre-made filth. To avoid this parade of disappointment, I suggest you try making them at home for yourself and pimp your life! The Ingredients Self raising flour (200g): It’s flour that is ‘self -raising’ Baking powder (1 tsp): It’s powder used in ‘baking’ Milk: It’s white and it’s milk Cold pressed rape seed oil (1 tsp): I’m just showing off here, any vegetable oil will do Salt: Preferably EU sanctioned and organic…but it doesn’t have to be Sugar: (half of a half of a tsp) Man’s, or indeed anyone’s best friend and don’t let me catch you cracking open the sweetener The Method Put all the above into a bowl and whisk on full power trying not to shower the wall and your cat in it’s contents, and if you’re cat is on the work top then take them of it and review your health and hygiene practice in the home worksheet! Once all is combined, lift the whisk out and make sure the batter drops off easily but is not too thin or watery. Add more flour if it’s too runny or milk if it is too stiff. Next pour the mixture into a pancake jar, ideally one that closes and has a closable hole on the top. Heat a frying pan on medium heat with a large knob of butter in the middle. Once the butter melts pour in a good amount of the mixture into the centre and swirl around to form a good round pancake although you can use a mould if you’re outlandish enough to want to make a square one. Leave for a while till the top of the pancake bubbles and there is just a thin top layer of the pancake still uncooked. Flip the pancake and cook on the other side for just 10-20 seconds as most of the pancake should already have been cooked. If the pan is too hot it will burn the first side before most of the pancake is cooked which is why it shouldn’t be on a high heat. Serve with berries, bacon, maple syrup or anything you desire, but mainly love…or come down to ‘three’ on Saturdays and get them from the horses mouth, so to speak.

Rugby’s Fibromyalgia Support Group is launching a new daytime meeting, funded by the BIG Lottery Fund. Starting on 21 November at midday, the additional monthly meetings will be taking place at the Rugby Workers Club (RWC), 32 Oliver St, Rugby CV21 2ET on the third Wednesday of each month. They are primarily intended to be social events starting and finishing well within school hours, so parents are free for school runs.. The venue has free car parking and disabled access. The BIG Lottery Fund has provided funding for the meetings for the first year. After that the Group hopes the meetings will become self-supporting. Rugby’s Fibromyalgia Support Group was founded in 2007. It covers the Rugby area and South Leicestershire. The Group supports people with this condition that causes pain throughout the body. Famous sufferers of the condition include Lady Gaga, Morgan Freeman and the BBC’s Kirsty Young. Hilary Brocklehurst, Chair of the Group said ‘We have always met in the evenings. Now as well as our evening meetings we will be offering a daytime meeting, at a time suitable for everyone from young Mums to pensioners. The Rugby Workers Club is an ideal venue, being warm, on the ground floor and with dedicated car parking suitable for disabled people’. About Fibromyalgia and the Rugby Support Group Fibromyalgia is a chronic, painful condition which can affect people of all ages and have a major impact on their lives, not only the person with the condition, but their partner and family. It may also have a knock-on effect to finances, social life and employment which can cause confusion, worry and depression. Each person varies as to the severity of the condition and how it develops, so their needs and circumstances vary. Each individual needs a caring, compassionate and experienced group of friends to help them understand and live with Fibromyalgia The Rugby Fibromyalgia Support Group was established in 2007 and provides a wide range of support for people of all ages who are suffering from Fibromyalgia. The group stimulates members to take part in a range of activities to help cope with the condition and enables sufferers to make new friends and socialise. There is an active telephone support line with befriending and home visiting facilities available. The group has, thanks to its fund raising over the years, been able to establish a variety of educational and support services for its members.
