Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the November Edition of The Rugby Register Inside this months jam packed magazine you will find lots of wonderful local advertisers together with articles, features and local events. Just like last month our Community News page has doubled in size as there is sooo much happening locally! Why not have a read through, get together with a friend or two and pop along to an event? Can you afford to employ an accountant? According to Emma Reid of Cottons Chartered Accountants, you can’t afford not to! Business can be taxing, in more ways than one. At Cottons Chartered Accountants we’re frequently consulted about staying on the right side of the regulations and how to make the most of allowances. If you’re starting out in business, it’s really handy to develop a relationship with a good professional accountancy practice from day one, as it’ll save you headaches in the long run. It’s never too soon! In addition, we know what it’s like to be a start-up, so on top of offering sound financial advice we can become an extension of your team, giving invaluable business guidance. We have lots of experience in helping businesses keep everything above board regarding tax compliance, which is absolutely essential as it’s a bit of a minefield out there. In the case of enquiries from HMRC, you’ll have complete peace of mind knowing that we’ll handle everything, leaving you free to do what you do best. Just as important is our skill in advising on tax efficiencies that can ultimately save you money. Why not take advantage of the Cottons Tax Challenge? Challenge us to minimise your tax bill and we’ll offer a free no-obligation consultation to see if we can. Then if you choose to change accountants, simply inform your current firm that you’re leaving their service and we’ll take care of the rest.

Emma Reid A.C.A.

What you get with Cottons is a proactive, forward-thinking and innovative practice ready for the digital era - the ‘new age’ of accountants. We’re geared up for HMRC’s Making Tax Digital and will be able to guide and support you through the changes, with all the necessary technical know-how. The concept of saving you money extends to our pricing policy, and you can expect no nasty surprises when it comes to fees. Charges are discussed in advance of work being undertaken and we’re committed to giving great value for money. We’re also dedicated to excellent customer service and want you to feel completely at home, so you’ll have one main point of contact with a member of the team who understands your circumstances, and you can rest easy enjoying this continuity of care.

Can you afford not to have a conversation with Cottons Chartered Accountants? To arrange an initial no obligation consultation please contact Emma. Call: 01788 579033 Email: ereid@cottonsaccountants.co.uk

range nt of m is Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert asks a question:

Are Women Healthier than Men?.. According to statistics women do on average live longer than men by about four years in the UK but I recently read that this difference is mainly caused by men being killed by violent deaths, accidents, and suicide rather than poor health. However, British men are finally closing the life expectancy gap. A study by Imperial College London and the World Health Organisation has found that men born in 2030 are expected to live until they are 82.5 years old, and women until 85.3. It was 4.6 years in 2001 and 6.3 years in 1971. I believe that men’s health problems are often not discussed and symptoms ignored for a long time before they seek medical advice. Also until recent years men were more at risk from health problems because they used to smoke and drink more than women. Unfortunately this is not the case now as more women particularly young women are drinking more alcohol and suffering as a consequence from liver disease. In the health profession it is a reported fact that men tend to worry about their health but do not seek advice or talk about their concerns with their family whereas women do. Many men are more inclined to hope their health will improve by luck than seek the help of a doctor or health professional. Unfortunately this neglect can result in far more serious problems and I would urge any reader who has been struggling with a health problem to see their doctor or health professional. I have noticed that my male Clients tend to come for a Nutritional Consultation because they want to lose a few pounds, they have a lack of energy or because they realise they are not eating the right foods and want advice on changing their diet. During the initial consultation other health issues often come to light and an enlarged prostate is very common in older men. I hope you find the following helpful. The prostate is a walnut-size gland surrounding the urethra at the neck of the bladder, which becomes enlarged as part of the aging process. This enlargement often causes problems with urination; a lack of flow, retention, or increased frequency of urination usually during the night, or worse bed-wetting. Enlarged prostate does not mean that you have prostate cancer (benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is common.) However men often fear they have prostate cancer when they experience these symptoms. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men although mainly associated with aging; lung cancer being the first. Over 92% of deaths from prostate cancer occur in men aged 65 and over. Although it is relatively common, prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer; its incidence has been declining in recent years probably because of better screening and earlier diagnosis. If you have any concerns you should ask your doctor for a PSA test. This is a blood test that detects raised levels of a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and is an excellent screening test for prostate cancer which I am sure your Doctor will have arranged for you already. To help with enlarged prostate I recommend a healthy diet high in antioxidant foods which helps reduce inflammation while boosting your immune system. Antioxidants are essential for the whole body but if you are concerned about your prostate you would also benefit from a zinc supplement. Increase your consumption of grapefruit, watermelon, and tomatoes and tomato products such as tomato juice and tomato-based sauces. These contain lycopene, which has been shown to protect against prostate cancer. Also pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, cherries, blueberries and all fresh fruit and vegetables are high in antioxidants and help to protect us all from cancer. Avoid too much alcohol and caffeine and drink plenty of water at least 6 to 8 glasses each day, never let yourself become dehydrated. I do believe that both men and women are careless about their health and do not realise that good health is priceless and the most precious thing we have. Live with joy and health.

Sit down and just before a game, the strike will not be long, this minute there is a nice bright flame and next your puffing strong, a cigarette is a burning but it will soon be out and then there is a yearning for one more there’s no doubt. They then might be some coughing and you’ll be out of breath before your fill coffin you feel like living death. Go to a doctor or a nurse and they will do their bit, and you might have a moan or curse before you’re fighting fit. You can go to a bookie and then lay out a bet but you are just a rookie. Bad luck you well may get, don’t think of time and money it takes to get you there, your pals won’t think it funny if you don’t get somewhere. You then can go and have a beer and you start to make hay, it makes you sometimes to feel queer, to help you lose your way. A copper could arrest you and put you into jail while anger might incest you because you like your ale. You want to go out late at night, have sex, fast food and fun, In time you will not feel quite right and wonder what you’ve done, Your money’s short and tempers fray, you fall down in a crowd and want to live another way, your parents are not proud. Drive dangerously and very fast and you can have a spill, That sort of life can never last till someone you could kill, drugs, gun crimes and stabbing too are also on the rise and they are obstacles for you before you claim your prize.

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Recipes From Three Bistro h

ry & R ic e r u C

People often tell me I am backwards coming forwards. With this in my mind, did I tell you I saw the Rolling stones in Italy last month! No on a serious note, I am often reluctant to tell people just what a furious beacon of hope and excellence I am as a man, husband and step-father and indeed, human being. But as I have now got this off my chest and had a little practice at ‘show offery’ I can now say out loud (or in print) that nothing I have ever made gets the feedback that this dish does. Only last week we had a client visiting from Tel Aviv who told me he had eaten fish curries all over the world but this was possibly the best he’d ever tasted as he shook my hand with the firmness of someone who had possibly worked for the secret services and travelled a bit but I could just be running away with myself and my stereotyping! You may wonder why I am giving you the recipe for my best dish but I do it in the vain hope you will come down and try it for yourself but also the way I see it, people tell me how Instagram works on a weekly basis, but can I get it to work? I have already given previous readers the recipe for the base Indian paste that will give you over 50 Indian dishes. Now excuse me I have to put on my chef whites for the next bit…

The Ingredients Line caught haddock: This is probably more ethical but possibly more painful for the fish, frozen fish is also fine. Garlic, ginger & green chilli: The holy trinity. Two Onions: Medium sized and red although white will be fine. One can of tinned tomato: The marvel of the modern age. 2 heaped teaspoons of Coriander powder: It’s brown, it’s powder. Quarter of a teaspoon of Garam massala: I make my own mix of cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Try to make your own as shop bought packets are loaded with cumin as it is the cheapest spice. Natural yogurt: Greek is the best. Rice: Basmati as long grain never works for me. Red Pepper: Ferrari Scarlet or as close to. The Method Marinate the fish in very finely cut or minced garlic, ginger, chilly, oil and the garam massala. For best results process the spices in a dirty beige grinder from the 70’s like my mum use to do and still does. Put the marinated fish in the fridge and leave for at least 2-3 hours. Season and roast the pepper. Make the paste (see previous recipes for the method). People have different ways of making rice but this the best or only way I have found that gives the best results. First use a glass or mug to measure the rice. I use the ratio of one glass of rice to one and a third water. Firstly wash the starch of the rice by rinsing it a few times till the water is clear. My mother would then soak the rice for an hour at this point but I don’t, I’m a businessman so I’ve got to make moves! Boil the rice with the correct amount of water, some oil and salt. As soon as it boils turn it right down and simmer till the water has gone. Then turn off the heat. If you are using an electric hob then leave it on the plate. Once cooked and if the fish has already marinated then you are ready to rock and roll. Heat some oil and sear the fish on both sides very briefly before adding the paste, some water and thin strips of the red pepper. Fry these till the fish is just about done and be careful not to overcook it or it will be hard and chewy. Add fresh coriander if you have some. Plate the rice as attractively as possible. Spoon on the fish and drizzle the yogurt on top. You could try making it or try it on Friday day or at the ‘three’ Friday night supper club at ‘three’. ‘three’!

r Grow Your Own Rhubarb

What could be better than rounding off your Sunday lunch with a piping hot bowl of rhubarb crumble? Or how about a delicious rhubarb pie, summery rhubarb fool, or even some homemade rhubarb jam? Growing rhubarb in your garden is so easy that it has even gained a reputation for thriving on neglect.

DON’T PANIC

The weather should be cold enough for the lawn mower to be put away for the winter. Before you store it away, give it a quick clean, removing any dried on clippings and make sure the collection bag is empty. For petrol lawn mowers, drain off the fuel before you store it away.

k e us e o f th o a M s

Rhubarb crowns and budded pieces are best planted in the spring or autumn while the soil is warm and moist. Potted rhubarb plants can be planted out at any time of the year so long as the soil is not frozen, waterlogged or suffering from drought. Grow rhubarb on moist, well drained soil in a sunny position if possible, although they will tolerate semi shade. It’s well worth preparing the soil properly before you plant them. Dig in plenty of well rotted manure to a depth of about 60cm (24”) and clear all weeds, make sure you don’t fully cover the crown as this will cause it to rot. Harvest time is April to June.

DIY leaf mould - Fill a heavy-duty dustbin bag with leaves, then wet

e le

them. This’ll help rot them down. Tie up the bag and punch holes in it with a fork. Store it and forget all about it. After a year or so, the leaf mould will turn into a great weed suppressing mulch. After 2 years, you’ll have a fine mould perfect for soil conditioning and making composts. The trees with small leaves such as ash, oak, alder, hawthorn and beech, break down quickly in one to two years. Those with large woody leaves like walnut, plain, horse chestnut and sycamore take longer. So, to speed up the process, shred the leaves by raking them onto your lawn. Then run your lawnmower over them. This will shred them in no time! Simply empty the finely shredded leaves into sacks.

SEE WHAT KBC CAN CREATE FOR YOU Kitchen & Bathroom Creations has been established now for just over 6 years, starting in a small showroom in Hinckley, quickly expanding into the unit next door to double it's size and more recently opened showrooms in both Warwick and Rugby. As the name suggests, they specialise in creating quality but affordable bathroom and kitchen renovations. Offering a full renovation package from design to completion, they take care of all plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling etc and use only qualified tradesmen with the back up guarantees on all goods and labour supplied. The Company is family owned and run by the Director, James Holland, his wife Victoria and father Paul, who ran his own successful furniture retail outlet for over 30 years. The Hinckley showroom has recently been refitted, now with 6000 sq ft of retail and warehouse space with over 20 bathroom sets, and our complete new range of kitchens and bedroom sliding wardrobes on display. After 6 years of trading, James feels the time is right to expand the business further to bring the successful formula of quality but affordability to other areas, and shortly in addition to Hinckley, Warwick and Rugby, will be opening branches in other areas shortly. James would also like to point out that over the past 6 years we have successfully completed over 1000 renovations, and this year particular emphasis will be placed on the growth of our kitchen range with the four best selling lines, Gloss Slab, Traditional Shaker, J.Pull Gloss, and the True Handless range being heavily promoted. James says " We are already cheaper than all of the big D.I.Y stores but by increasing our sales volumes, our prices will come down further, giving our customers even better value for money". KBC offer a free, no obligation planning service for your kitchen and bathroom and will either just supply your goods or fully manage all or part of your renovation project. If you just want to freshen up your tired kitchen, they also offer a door change service with many styles and colours to choose from.
