Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the May Edition of The Rugby Register ‘Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday The Rugby Register, Happy Birthday to us!’ Wow, the magazine is 13 years old this month, with me at the helm for 11. In that time I’ve had 2 children (I already had an 18 month old when I took over the magazine), been in hospital for major surgery, had numerous illnesses, holidays, renovated a house, moved house and juggled school holidays with putting the magazine together and am very proud to say that I’ve never missed an edition. I may not have slept or eaten well through some of these times but I can be proud and say I’ve never let the readers or advertisers down. It’s been exhausting at times but I still love running the magazine and am proud of all the changes and improvements I’ve made over the years since its A5 black & white, 1,500 copy first edition. Now delivering a whopping 15,000 copies each month we are still the biggest and best loved magazine in Rugby. I hope you enjoy and find this months bumper birthday edition useful and informative. Browse for a bargain and meet Work Experience Students Buy it 34 is a new enterprise set up by the students from Brooke School in Bilton. The shop, based at 34 Regent Street in Rugby town centre is a charity style shop and aims to offer students valuable work experience in retail, stock management as well as working within the community learning valuable social skills. Supported by school staff students gain confidence and self esteem, having to learn how to get themselves to and from work also teaches them crucial life skills. Kath who is currently working full-time setting up the enterprise, already works at Brooke School as the Work Experience co-ordinator, a role that has helped many students gain key skills out in the workplace in a number of local Rugby based business. Kath sees Buy it 34 as an extension of this, offering interested students the opportunity of work experience. The shop is open now during school hours and currently has an abundance of donated items for sale, all kindly donated by the general public including brand new toys and baby & children’s clothes from local companies who support the school work experience programme. They are not however currently able to take in second hand clothes or electrical items but this is something they will be looking into in the future. Current items for sale range from toys, baby items, children’s books, small furniture items, CD’s, DVD’s, cuddly toys, soft furnishings, ornaments, jewellery and much much more.
The upstairs area of the shop will be turned into Teach Workstations where students learn the process involved in checking donated items and pricing them up ready for placing them on the shop floor for sale in one area and the smaller back office will be an area where students interested in computers & technology will be able to help run the Buy it 34 Ebay shop. Again, valuable skills being gained that can be used elsewhere in the future. How can you help? Currently Buy It 34 are not in need of donations of items to sell, but are more looking for volunteer helpers for a variety of things including DIY and sewing. They organise Volunteer Days, details of which can be found on their Facebook page which I urge you to follow: www.facebook.com/ Buyit34 . On this page you will be able to see and keep up with opening days & times and they will also be posting events and volunteer requirements too. Alternatively, pop in for a browse and to say hello, Kath and the students would love to welcome you! Other local schools are getting involved with students volunteering in the shop too. Are you ready for Making Tax Digital?
HMRC has confirmed the introduction of its Making Tax Digital programme will commence in April 2019. This is the biggest change in the UK tax system for more than 20 years.
What is Making Tax Digital?
The intention is to modernise the tax system and make the management of tax affairs accurate and easier. The new requirements will mean that all accounting records must be kept and submitted to HMRC in electronic format using HMRC approved software. There will not be the usual wait until the end of the year or beyond to know how much tax is to be paid. On a much more real time basis HMRC will be collecting and processing data to stop tax due or repayments building up.
Who does it affect and when is it being introduced?
Businesses that are VAT registered with a turnover of more than £85,000 will be the first to enter the Making Tax Digital system. VAT registered businesses including the self-employed, landlords, unincorporated businesses, companies and LLPs are all impacted. They will all be required to use the Making Tax Digital system from April 2019 onwards.
What if I am not VAT Registered?
It will be April 2020 at the earliest that the remaining businesses, landlords and also individuals will be brought in to the system. However, they can opt to move to the new digital system earlier, meaning that they are well prepared for when the official time comes and they can start to benefit from the new system’s features.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Rugby care home celebrates Care Home Open Day Anya Court Care Home in Rugby joined care homes around the country on Saturday 21st April when they took part in Care Home Open Day. Care Home Open Day is a UK wide initiative that was launched in 2013 by a group of leading care providers and organisations. Its aim is to connect care homes with their local area and to remind people that care homes in every community are filled with unique, intelligent and charming characters. This year, Anya Court Care Home, on Dunchurch Road, invited visitors to join the residents for a day of fun in the sun with a boules tournament in the award-winning gardens. Visitors were also able to sample some delicious homemade cakes whilst receiving mini manicures and hand massages by the homes’ in-house beauty therapists for the special occasion. Team members at Anya Court also set up a car wash to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The best card game there is?..... Bridge is the most wonderful card game there is. It’s a multi-layered game you can take as seriously, or as lightly, as suits you. It’s a trick-based game played by four players at a table each contributing a card, following suit where they can and discarding where they can’t. They play in pairs sitting opposite each other, and the pairs try not to win a trick twice, but to share their resources to get the most tricks they can between them. Sometimes one of the four suits is designated as the “trump” suit. If a player cannot follow suit, but has trump cards, they can win the trick. Players start with thirteen cards, and two pairs compete to win at least seven out of the thirteen tricks. The next layer of the game removes some of the luck of being dealt the higher cards. The auction between the two pairs to take on the highest target, or contract, to win with their cards. They bid to play with a named trump suit, or without trumps, until three of the players decline to go further. Then they play the cards and find out whether the side with the winning contract has judged it well, and wins the number of tricks they have designated, or fails to. The scoring of the game awards points to the side taking on the contract if they meet their declared target. The score rewards bold targets enticing the pair to bid up. If the defending side prevent the meeting of the target, by taking enough tricks to defeat it, then the defending side get the score. One table of four tables plays the game in its rubber or Chicago form. However, when there are two or more tables, the duplicate element comes in. The same deal is passed from table to table and the overall score rewards the best performance with the same cards, taking even more luck out of the game. This makes bridge a wonderful game that you play in a simple or a more complex form. There is always something to learn, to understand and to share with other players enjoying the twists and turns and the company. There are formal bridge clubs, social bridge clubs, informal groups and games at home, in village halls and club houses all over the area. Spicy Pulled Chicken
In an ever changing and evolving world we are becoming ever more desensitised to the whole food production process and in fact everything from poverty to people. Very few of us actually hunt for animals, forage for plants or grow our own. In an increasingly ‘civilised’ world where everything is more and more packaged from food to Politicians, very few of us know where or how the food we eat gets to the table or imagine the meat on our table has actually come from an animal. I myself am sometimes guilty of this. However I have always tried to keep the respect for food that was drummed in to me as a child when we had very little. I abhor waste, whether it be a plant or animal which is why I do everything I can not to waste anything at home or at ‘three’ which is why we always ask for preorders at our supper club and private dining events. People, especially in the West, now want to go one stage further in this disconnection of meat and animal by their refusal to eat meat on the bone so that it equates less and less to an actual living being. For reasons of taste and authenticity I always cook chicken on the bone and rarely enjoy breast meat but ‘the customer is always right’ so we devised and serve our own ‘Spicy pulled chicken’. The Ingredients; Garlic, Ginger & chilli: The holy trinity Tomato puree: Any will do Garam masala: A blend of 5 spices which is available from most supermarkets or refer to my past recipes for a breakdown Paprika pureé: Easily found in many ‘foreign’ shops Chicken thighs: They don’t have to be Doris & Dave from your neighbour’s coup but a good quality set will probably give you a better bone to meat ratio Cold pressed rape seed oil: Any rape seed oil will do The Method Crush the garlic and chop the ginger and chilli very finely. Mix together in a baking tray. Add a tea spoon of tomato and Paprika pureé. Drizzle some cold pressed rape seed oil over this, season and add a tea spoon of garam massala. Mix this vigorously before adding the chicken thighs. Swirl them around the paste making sure they are well covered. Put the tray in the oven and bake at 150-160 degrees for approximately 45 minutes turning when necessary. In the meantime cut some lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber into a bowl and add some lemon, a dash of oil and season. Once the chicken is done leave it to cool covered with foil so it doesn’t dry out. Once it has cooled strip the meat off the bone and combine with all the chicken and spice juices from the bottom of the tray. The meat can be heated in a pan when you want to serve. Simply plate with the salad and flatbreads and enjoy. Community continues to grow as new residents get keys Houlton has welcomed its latest wave of new residents, as local families collect the keys to their homes in Rugby’s growing neighbourhood. Davidsons Homes’ Dollman Meadow development, named after the area’s historic setting, has seen eleven families move into their homes in recent weeks, with several more expected to join the community this spring. Houlton’s new homeowners have already become acquainted following the recent ‘Meet Your Neighbours’ event, organised by master developers Urban&Civic, with a second event set to take place in May for future residents. Houlton boasts a range of one, two, three, four, and five-bedroom houses across its three sites; Davidsons Homes’ Dollman Meadows, Crest Nicholson’s Hansford Park, and Morris Homes’ The Beacons. Situated on the historic former Rugby Radio Station site, the development already features a new primary school, St Gabriel’s CofE Academy opening in September this year, popular eatery The Tuning Fork, a vibrant community space at The Barn and extensive walkways and green spaces. When complete, the new neighbourhood of Houlton will also house two further primary schools, a secondary school and an eight-GP health centre. Bedding Plants: Tender summer-bedding plants, such as petunias and marigolds, should be safe to plant outside in many parts of the country from mid-May onwards, once the danger of frost has passed. When buying plants, look for ones that are green and bushy with plenty of flower buds, rather than open blooms. Dig over the ground before you plant, removing any weeds. Give the bedding plants a thorough soak with water and then plant them at the distance recommended on the label or seed packet. Keep an eye on the weather and cover with fleece if frost is forecast.

moved this time of year - either digging up, dividing or moving shrubs moving plants from one place to another in your garden. The leaves are starting to expand them and they won’t have a chance to be making more roots because of the potential impending dry weather.
