Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the May Edition of The Rugby Register Wowzers, the respoonse to the newly merged magazine has been amazing. Thank you so much to everyone who has commented, praised and given feedback about the magazine recently, it really means alot to know that so many of you benefit from all our hard work each month. From both readers enjoying articles & finding superb local businesses, to businesses gaining lovely local customers - this really is a win win for our fabulous town. Keep up the good work everyone! This edition is our 12th, yes 12th Birthday! Wow, where has the time gone? It seems like a lifetime ago when the magazine was a small A5 single colour magazine being delivered to just 1,500 homes. We’ve grown to 10 times that now with 15,000 copies hand delivered each and every month. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I’m excited to see what the future holds too. Who knows, I may still be here in another 12 years celebrating 24 years!
www.randnac.org. Also, see the Community News page for more detail. Have a wonderful May, and fingers crossed for some decent weather on the Bank Holidays at least!

Recipes From Three Bistro
ash H e
S a r di
n
So feel free to see this as ‘Return of the Jedi’ being as it is the third part of a trilogy of ‘three’ recipes before the sequels or even prequels as is now fashion. As a musician I sometimes see meals or recipes as songs. The moniker for much Country, folk, blues and the music of the ‘Beatles’ could easily be ‘three chords and the truth’. The most simple music has often captured the hearts and imagination of millions and I think it’s the same with food. A simple meal done well is every bit as satisfying and pleasing as anything involving 10 or more pans and a week of preparation, prayers and luck. One of my favourite quick off the cuff meals is a twist on sardines on toast which I call a ‘sardine hash’.
The Ingredients Onions & Garlic: Bouncy, bold onions and large bulbous cloves or you’ll get side tracked by unnecessary fiddlery. Sardines: Tinned in sunflower oil and fairly current. I wouldn’t use them if they have been left over from the war! Capers: Substantial, miniature accordion-like nuggets of vinegary greenness. Tomato puree: A simple shop bought mass produced paste will do so you don’t need to get on the phone to auntie short and round in Tuscany! Harissa paste: Or I refer to this as ‘cheat sauce’ as it adds a little depth and happiness to any dish. Herbs: Dried mixed herbs will do unless you happen to be visiting a wild herb emporium in the country. Red pepper: Scarlet Ferrari red if possible with oil of ‘Olay’ skin. The Method Firstly, go to the oven and turn the dial to 190 degrees on your fan assisted oven. If you don’t have one of these then don’t waste both our time and go out and buy one. No, just use a conventional oven at 200 degrees. Next turn your attention to the pepper. Half and de-seed it before placing it on a baking tray. Drizzle with cold pressed rape seed oil and season. Finely (but not too finely) chop the garlic and dice the onions and place in a pan with the oil from the sardines. Chop the capers very finely and leave them on the board primed for action. Season and fry the onions and garlic till they soften. Add the puree and Harissa and stir well. Add the capers and herbs before adding the sardines with any remaining oil from the tin. Break up the sardines and cook till they are warmed through. Check the peppers and cook till they are either charred or softened and slightly withered. I like to top sourdough toast with the hash. I prefer a slim lined sourdough rather than an overly sour wedge. You can either griddle or toast depending on your mood! For me, roasted peppers yield the greatest taste for the least amount of work. I cut these up into thin strips and layer them on top for some added sweetness and colour. Now you can of course make these at home, or why not have me make them for you at ‘three’!

Holistic Healing
What do we mean?...
Well at last Spring is here and the whole country seems to have taken on a wonderful sense of awakening of new beginnings. The birds are singing, flowers are blossoming, and the trees are truly magnificent in their abundance of differing shades of green. If you get an opportunity take a walk through Jephson Gardens in Leamington Spa, it just takes your breath away. Walking at this time of year is really good for the soul and you know I always say “move that body” because exercise is essential for our health. I am totally committed to helping people improve their health naturally and sincerely believe that food is the medicine of the future. However of course when there is serious disease it is important that the medical profession are consulted immediately and although some medical drugs can have side effects, they are often necessary to save lives. Doctors and nurses in this country do a wonderful job and work very long unsociable hours under difficult conditions. We perhaps do not appreciate how lucky we are to have such a fantastic Health Service, I promised I will not mention it again! Unfortunately it is often the same with good health; we do not appreciate it until we are ill. I encourage people to take responsibility for their own health because prevention is far better than cure and it is this aspect of holistic healing that I am committed to promoting. I often recommend herbal remedies which I have found beneficial for my Clients. The medicinal benefits of herbs have been known for centuries. Records of Roman, Egyptian, Persian and Hebrew medical practices show that herbs were used extensively to cure many illnesses. Many herbs contain powerful ingredients that, if used correctly, can help heal the body. The pharmaceutical industry was originally based upon the ability to isolate these ingredients and make them available in a purer form. Approximately 25% of the prescription medicines sold today are (or were originally) derived from plants. For example morphine and codeine come from the opium poppy; asprin originated from willow bark; digitalis, a heart muscle strengthener is derived from the foxglove plant; and paclitaxel (Taxol), used in cancer chemotherapy, comes from the Pacific yew tree.
In recent years more people have turned to natural alternatives to medical drugs and scientists are also looking at herbal remedies. It is estimated that 80% of the world population today depend on plants to treat common ailments. A word of caution here, it is important to understand that some herbs can be dangerous particularly when taken with medical drugs so you should consult a qualified practitioner and also check with your doctor if you are taking other medication. Below are some everyday herbs and spices that can be beneficial to your health, the first two are my personal favourites because they work so well in the body and are readily available. Garlic – This is a wonderful herb and although some complain that it makes the breath smell its benefits are well worth it. Garlic is a powerful anti-bacterial substance which may also protect us from heart disease and cancer. It contains potassium and vitamin C. Ginger – Very good for gastrointestinal problems; it aids the absorption of food and has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve arthritic pain. It is effective for travel sickness (crystallised stem ginger will do). It also has a stimulating effect on the heart and circulation so good for cold hands and feet and helps dispel mucus and phlegm.
o T of Cumin – This is also good for digestion and liga may also have anticancer properties. mec Chilli – May help arthritic pain and reduce n erv blood fat levels and relieve congestion. The p Cinnamon - Recent research by US scientists ma nip found that less than half a teaspoon daily comp l helped type 2 diabetics to bring down their range a o levels of blood sugar and harmful f is cholesterol. It also helps to make blood less sticky and likely to clot so may prevent stroke. Remember you are responsible for your own good health and there are lots of herbs that can help heal the body. Live with joy and health.

Big enough to cope, small enough to care
All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.
CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Make your house a home... Rugby’s newest Home Furnishings store recently opened its doors and early signs show it’s set to be very popular. Located at 3, Albert Street, Rugby Home has a large showroom displaying well known, quality brands that include Wade Upholstery, Parker Knoll, Hypnos and many more. The display items are just a small selection of what’s on offer. Inside the showroom you will find brochures of all the ranges on offer along with superb personalized caring advice from Nick & Káren. Following on from a successful 6 years running a similar business in Towcester, Nick & Káren are delighted to now be in the heart of Rugby Town Centre offering their high quality home furnishings at very competitive prices. From mirrors, home gifts, clocks & rugs to sofa’s, beds, mattresses and dining room furniture you are sure to find a wonderful, and often unique addition to your home. Káren is a fully qualified Interior Designer and loves to help customers when they are unsure of what will ‘go’ in a room and what works with your existing furniture & colour scheme. Káren welcomes customers to bring in pictures (printed or on your mobile phone) of
your room/s to help give her a visual to work with. It’s also helpful to bring along measurements too. This kind of customer service can only be found in independent shops and should be embraced. Nick Banyai (owner) told me: “We sell quality goods at competitive and affordable prices. Much of what we sell are made by well-known brand names, that we believe give our customers confidence they are making the right choice when purchasing from us. We help our customers with impartial and valuable advice, to select the right product and fabrics and hope people will stop by to see the new store and say hello.”

FASHION
for 2017...
With the days getting longer and the sun shining a little brighter, we can almost feel summer approaching. We can feel the excitement of summer holidays but at the same time we might be a little worried about having to reveal a little more during the sunny days. In this article I wanted to highlight the trends for the Spring /Summer 2017 so you can feel better equipped to use those trends to your advantage.
80s Influence This trend is more for your going out clothes and for a lot of us a chance to dig out our old clothes hidden at the back of the wardrobes. You can go for nipped waists, exaggerated shoulders and giant crystal earrings.
Statement Stripes Stripes are a great ‘tool’ in creating a visual illusion. The basic rule is the vertical stripes will give you an illusion of height and the horizontal stripes will create an illusion of size. To elongate your legs, for example, you can have vertical stripes on your trousers or skirt. If you would like to give an illusion of a larger bust you can have horizontal stripes on your top.
Florals Floral patterns are great to create a more feminine look, so you can feel truly girly this summer. Like with any patterns you need to think of the ‘scale’ The scale is important as you don’t want to be ‘overpowered’ by your outfit. So if you are petite opted for the smaller floral print and if you are medium to tall build go for medium to large prints.
Super Brights You can truly go as bright as you would like. Anything from bright greens to sunshine yellow, there is only one rule: Wear LOTS of it. My advice to you will be to use it as a ‘highlighter’. Remember from previous articles, focus on your assets and use Brights to bring them to the forefront.
I love clothes and I enjoy finding out about new fashion trends like most women. However, I must admit I do not follow fashion, I use it as a guideline. The trends tend to make everyone look the same. It is so important to stay true to yourself and let your personality shine through. Use the ideas I have shared here and adjust to suit YOU. SUMMER is fast approaching meaning it is time to make the most of the sunshine and get out in the garden.
Wild Flowers
Greenfly Watch out for airborne pests such as greenfly that love all the new growth and will suck the life out of it if given the chance. They’re flying at this time of year, looking for a spot where they can raise their enormous families. The generations that come later in the year don’t have wings so it’s important to try to catch flying insects now. They cluster on the plant; when you see them, spray with diluted washing-up liquid, or try one of the sprays on the market.
a m o T
to e s
This is a good time to sow a wild flower patch or meadow. Just make sure any seed mix you get is right for your soil and conditions – usually they’re mixtures of less vigorous grasses and lovely wild flowers such as poppies, vetch, daisies and yellow rattle. Insects and birds such as thrushes, finches and flycatchers will all benefit from a patch of wild flowers, even if it is only in large patio container or as part of a border. Gardeners in turn benefit from having birds and insects in their garden, to help keep down pests such as snails, slugs, aphids and other plant-damaging bugs You don’t need a huge garden to do this, just a few square metres, and you may even want to turn over all your lawn to wild flowers. It’s much better for wildlife and is also quite low maintenance. Leave the meadow to flower and seed, then cut back in late summer. Once the grasses reach just about six inches high (15cms), cut the meadow down to about two inches (5cms), and make sure that weeds such as thistles, docks and nettles are pulled out by hand.
Grow you Own To grow your own tomatoes, all you need is three tomato plants and bamboo canes, a growbag and some liquid tomato feed. They don’t like dull, rainy conditions, so a small cold frame is ideal. If not, position your growbag in a sunny, sheltered spot. Cut three big holes in the growbag and add the plants, firming and watering them in. Water every day and feed once a week. For best results, use a liquid tomato food such as Tomerite. Keep them watered since irregular watering causes fruit to split. Pinch out the side shoots when they appear, to get more fruit.

At its most pared down embroidery needs only fabric, thread and a needle – but you can add a lot more if you wish! In this workshop we will use several types of thread to work a variety of stitches, adding texture and sparkle by means of beads and gems to create a wreath of greenery enclosing colourful flowers and a 3D butterfly. The finished project will be made into a card. Scissors, needles and 4" hoop will be available to use during the workshop, but do feel free to bring your own if you wish. To book a place or for more information contact the tutor, Ilke Cochrane 01788 523222 / ilke@hardanger.co.uk
The BIG Strawberry Tea Party 2017 (In memory of Gail Dunkley)
Sunday 11th June 1-5pm at Dunchurch Village Hall vintage teas | all sorts of stalls | entertainment for the whole family | refreshments
Gail Dunkley was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in October 2014. Sadly she lost her battle after only 9 months. Gail’s wish was to give something back and help women everywhere who suffer with this cruel disease. In the last two years we have raised almost £20,000, a true legacy to a brave lady. But we still need your support. If you would like to help, be involved in any way or would like a stall please email Caroline at Sweetcjt@outlook.com or Nickie at nickie149@me.com
Join the Big Strawberry Tea Party group on Facebook for details & updates www.breastcancercare.org.uk/strawberry
