Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the June Edition of The Rugby Register Well the 9th Annual Ready Steady Fun Run went really well with just over 400 runners and many children (under 8’s) running short races on the track. The weather was superb, the atmosphere was wonderful and we raised thousands for local good causes; The Hoskyn Centre and Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club. Here I am with Kay (fellow joint organiser) and Deputy Mayor Tom Mahoney at the start line. June 11th is the Rugby & Coventry Bikeathon. Another wonderful charity event - not involving me this time, but hubby Rob this time (and if previous years are anything to go by I will be marshalling). I’m proud to be sponsoring this great event and hope that it’s as successful this year as in previous years. More details and an entry form can be found in this months magazine. Myself and Catherine have had another very busy month creating this jam packed edition for you. With more new advertisers and some great articles for you this month I’m sure you will enjoy the read. The magazine is going from strength to strength and merging the 2 magazines certainly seems to have helped with that. It’s hard to believe that it has been running fro 12 years!

This months picture of me & Catherine was taken during a recent night out in Rugby. I thought it was a fun pic - who knows what next month’s will be! Have a great June everyone,

The Percival Guildhouse and Rugby Tap Garden Party Date: Saturday 8th July, 1.00pm - 9.00pm Location: The Percival Guildhouse Gardens, St Matthews Street, (next to the library) The Percival Guildhouse was named to commemorate Dr. John Percival, the much respected Rugby School Headmaster who championed adult education. Now a Registered Charity, the PGH was founded in 1925 and is self-funded through course fees, grants and fund raising activities. Courses in languages, history, writing, health, arts and crafts and numerous dayschools are now on offer. Rugby Tap is in Rugby town centre selling premium artisan drinks, an array of locally brewed Ales in bottles or draught, straight from the barrel to Take-Home or to enjoy without distractions in the award winning micro pub. They also sell local Gin, Vodka and other Spirits.

During the Rugby Festival of Culture these two organisations will be hosting a joint Garden Party featuring; Arts and Crafts, Textiles, Real Bread and Poetry alongside Heritage tours and shopping opportunities. Fresh Food from the Guildhouse Cafe will be offered alongside a Bar run by the award winning Rugby Tap, which of course will feature the best Local Ales, Ciders and Gins. Recipes From Three Bistro p

e M y ic

a t b al s

So now we’re on the sequels! Once upon a time my ex-wife wanted to move to Sicily and I wanted to move nowhere, well especially not to be close to her family who had married into the mafia. This impasse finally saw us move to France as a compromise where I opened my first Restaurant. A crazy, funny, tragic and downright unbelievable story ensued which is documented in a book I am hoping to release later this year. My ex-wife loved Italy and the food so we ate pasta most days some of which I learned on location from her Sicilian family. The question as to whether carrots have a place in a lasagne has even created a schism in the Vatican! One of my favourite dishes is pork meatballs in tomato sauce with spaghetti which I will perform for you here, you do know I cook each dish as I write it! Feel free to embellish on any aspects of this dish but go too far and you can’t hold me responsible if tastes like a Walrus’s oily bits!

The Ingredients: Pork mince or sausage meat (literally): It doesn’t have to be ‘Peppa pig’ or ‘Babe’ but any good porker will do. Fennel Seeds: They are what they are. Onions: Spanish or if you prefer not to cry for Argentina then any other variety will be faintly adequate if not down right passable. Garlic & chilli: As if it wouldn’t make an appearance in one of my recipes! Herbs: The usual Italian suspects. Harissa paste: If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, this is tantamount to cheat sauce. This could change your life or at the very least your cooking. One egg: the fresher the better but you don’t need to float it in water, just check the date! The Method: Toast the fennel seeds in a dry pan. We don’t want them too dark, just lightly toasted. Put them in a bowl. Place the mince in the same bowl. If you’re using sausages then I suggest Cumberland as these are already seasoned. I would choose something with more than a famous brand’s paltry 50-60% pork. Cut the end of the sausage and squeeze the contents out. I normally allow one sausage per meatball and about 3 meatballs per person or 2 big ones. Next, get your sous chef to finely chop the onion and an appropriate amount of garlic, and if you don’t have a sous chef then ask yourself why, failing that get your partner to do it and if you don’t have one of these either, then again, ask yourself why, however we may be able to help with that with our event ‘Single Mingle’ which we hope to host once a month! Add the garlic and onions to the pork, sprinkle in some mixed Italian herbs, chilli, fresh basil, a teaspoon of harissa paste and the egg. Season generously. Mix the ingredients together but if you fancy yourself as a Mafiosi boss and don’t want to get your hands dirty then get someone else to do it by threatening to break theirs. Once it is well mixed then mould the mixture into good sized balls and fry them in a frying pan. I normally fry them in cold pressed rape seed oil as opposed to olive oil. Once these are golden they can be added to a rich tomato sauce and eaten with spaghetti.

Thanks for the memoirs.... A successful Hollywood casting director is helping people from Warwickshire tell their own stories worthy of the silver screen. Coventry-born Marie Rowe has worked on some of Hollywood’s most iconic films and is now encouraging people to put their life stories down on paper. Over her career, Marie has worked with some of the biggest names in film including Academy Award winning director Barry Levinson on films such as ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’, ‘Rain Man’ and ‘Avalon’. Now living in Rugby, she has received free advice and support from the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce to help develop her memoir writing business ‘Thanks for the Memoirs.’ Marie’s Hollywood career has seen her work as a writer, publicist, producer, casting director and actress. Using this experience she now hosts workshops with small groups to help people write their own autobiographies, she also holds one-to-one sessions with clients. In addition, she gives inspirational talks to university students and other social groups across the region about her life in Hollywood. Marie moved from Los Angeles to Rugby in 2012 and says she wants to help people realise that every person has an interesting story to tell. She said: “My first experience of doing this was with an elderly man back in 2009. I saw how alive he came talking about his life and I thought, wow, this is what I want to do.

“It’s amazing seeing people realise how fascinating their lives have been. I’m giving people the opportunity to write about themselves and be proud of the accomplishments of their life. “The Chamber has been so supportive. It can be difficult to promote yourself and this is something my business mentor has really helped me with. I love what I do and the Chamber has helped me to do more of it.” Marie moved to Toronto, Canada, in 1974 - after working as a secretary in Coventry and spending time with the US army in Germany. While in Toronto her use of Pitman’s Shorthand, which she’d learnt at school, caught the attention of Hollywood and led her to move to LA. Wendy Brown, business advisor at the Chamber, says it is these experiences that make the service she offers unique. Wendy said: “Marie is a shining example of a growing trend of people we see who are capitalising on their life experiences and turning them into a business. “She has an interesting life story of her own and I wish her the best of luck in helping others to tell theirs.” For more information visit www. thanksformemoirs.com Marie Rowe and Wendy Brown

Established since 1983

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

S Get

June is one of my favourite months. Long sunny days. Extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

J Te n

obs

Jobs This Month 1.

Beans, Beans, Beans Have a bean feast - Sow runner beans and climbing French beans now that the soil has warmed. It might feel late when many other vegetables are already cropping, but they get off to a better start if the soil is warm and the night temperatures are more consistent. The same goes for courgettes, marrows and sweetcorn, but you will need to act promptly now to make the most of a British summer.

pl t e G

Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds 2. Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas 3. Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes 4. Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes 5. Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside 6. Mow lawns at least once a week 7. Plant out summer bedding 8. Stake tall or floppy plants 9. Prune many spring-flowering shrubs 10. Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

a n ti n g Summer Bedding Plants Get planting your summer bedding plants such as: busy lizzie, tobacco plants, marigolds, pansies, lobelia and stocks. An hour before planting give the plants a good soaking of water and the ground your to plant them in too. If it’s a sunny day then try and plant them in the late afternoon or early evening. Don’t forget to water well again after planting.

Ready or Not....?

Have you noticed how expensive food has become? It seems that every week the grocery bill increases. I can totally understand why people are turning to the lower cost, no frills supermarkets. It has made me think about my mother’s shopping habits. Our groceries were from the local Coop. Meat and vegetables were also bought locally and my Mother would plan ahead what we would be having for the whole week. Nothing was wasted. We are now guilty of throwing away vast amount of food in this country. UK households wasted £13 billion worth of food in 2015 that could have been eaten. Perhaps now food is so much more expensive this will stop. I was reading recently about how much we are spending on ready meals. It’s a staggering £3 billion a year; the average British household eats three microwavable dinners each week. Ready meals were evidently first introduced in 1953 and now we are addicted to them. I am pleased to say, as a child, everything in our household was freshly cooked and although there was little money to spare my Mother’s priority was always to provide the family with good wholesome food. Looking back I realize how hard that must have been but I believe that the food we were given was far healthier than much of the food available today. Supermarket shelves are packed with processed foods, promising delicious meals which can just be popped in the microwave without any effort. It is so tempting and yes I succumb myself occasionally but what I notice is these meals don’t make me feel good. In fact recently I ate a Chinese Ready Meal from one of the top supermarkets and within a few hours I felt uncomfortable and listless, so what made me feel that way? As Gordon Ramsay once said ready meals are ‘food hell’, although sad to say he has now launched his own range! I certainly would agree that any processed food is not a health food. Ready meals contain some pretty disgusting additives, and more worrying is that some of the ingredients are cleverly hidden under the terms ‘preservatives’, ‘flavourings,’ and ‘spices’! They do taste good and that is because they are packed with salt, sugar and fat. A Chinese sweet and sour chicken with rice

was found to contain 33g of sugar only slightly less than a can of cola. What concerns me is that in the UK we are eating more ready meals than any other country in Europe. Supermarkets are only concerned with long shelf life and maintaining their profit margins. I would like to encourage you to cook for yourself and/or your families, as I often say home cooked food has a magic ingredient which is so beneficial for our health. This ingredient is love, food prepared with care and thoughtfulness tastes good and does us good. You only have to think about the meals your Mother cooked for you, they are special and always memorable. Unless of course you were unlucky and your Mother was not a good cook! I think the main thing to consider when choosing food for your family is whether the food you are giving them is going to provide the nourishment they need. This includes choosing good fresh ingredients, home cooking and creating the time to enjoy eating it; after all eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures! The problem we have is that life is so hectic these days I think we are often too busy to relax and enjoy the whole experience of food. I challenge you this month to avoid the ready meal isle at the supermarkets and plan your meals and cook fresh food for yourself and/or your family. If you are struggling to find the inspiration to try something new, I have over one hundred recipes and can send you some to try, just email me with ‘Recipes’ in the subject line, many of them are quick and easy to make. o However if you feel you are lacking some lig culinary skills I even offer cookery lessons to me my clients. My promise to you is that after ner researching some of the ingredients of ready The meals I will not be buying any in the near mani future and hope that you will consider doing p the same. Believe me some of the ingredients compl range included in ready meals made my o is stomach churn. Ready or Not – its definitely Not for me. Live with joy and health.

Cleves Garden Open Garden & Studio Enthusiastic gardeners and local workshop members of Midlands Potters Association Dot and Geoff Crowe of Cleves Garden Studio, Barby will be once more opening their garden and workshop studio as part of 2017 Summer Warwickshire Open Studios Event’s. Dot and Geoff have been taking part in Warwickshire Open Studios for 15 years and each year their event gets bigger and better. Cleves Garden Studio is slightly off the beaten track a mile outside Barby; it is worth the visit just for the view of the countryside! There are over 100 fascinating venues with Open Studios throughout Warwickshire, all with FREE admission. Make a date in your diary for your visit and go and see what the event has to offer, see work from concept to finish. The opening times and dates for your visit to Cleves garden Studio are: Saturdays 17th & 24th June, 1st July 12 noon - 5pm / Sunday’s 18th & 25th June, 2nd July 12 noon - 5pm This year there are eight exciting, inspiring artists & designer makers taking part at Cleves Garden Studio. The event offers an eclectic, diverse and inspiring mix of conceptual work. Open Studio is always a wonderful opportunity to meet painters, potters, jewellers, designers and makers and find out what they do, why they do it and what inspires them. Visitors could be walking away with a truly wonderful example of individual one off work and can also commission a craftsperson or painter to make the visitor an individual piece of work for themselves or as a gift for a special occasion. Geoff Crowe will be exhibiting some of his thrown contemporary glazed stoneware in the workshop studio he shares with Dot. Dot Crowe will be exhibiting her work in the shared workshop studio. Her inspired organic, functional, sculptured ceramic vessels are incised with organic objects from the landscape. This is Pete Daly’s second time exhibiting at Cleves Garden Studio; professionally Pete has a background in concept design development. Paintings reflect the understanding of design development. Moira Morriss is an inspiring craftsperson. Moira has had a successful and productive experience exhibiting with Open Studios over the last few years. Moira enjoys talking to visitors about her work with stone and her career in the Stone Industry. Mel Cahill is returning to both Warwickshire open Studios and Cleves garden Studio for the second time. Mel produces cards and paintings using a mixture of media to create emotive and explorative image that explores colour beyond its application. Ruth Mary Chipperfield is the jewellery sculptor and founder of Ruth Mary Jewellery. She will be showcasing her collection of handcrafted couture lace, reborn in silver and gold. Dot Crowe

Sophie Watkins produces work using a range of techniques including casting, glass fusion, photography and ceramics. Completing the eight is Ella Hendy, who is taking part in Warwickshire Open Studios for the first time. Ella uses mixed media to create paintings that are full or character and texture. For those wishing to visit a garden with cottage garden principles, the visitor will find many interesting nooks and crannies to see and explore. Dot & Geoff have spent over thirty years working and developing the garden with many seats to sit look and relax. The perennial garden has 12 varieties of apple trees, all of different varieties. The archway into the garden is made up of four apple trees on one side and four pears on the other. The allotment garden has eight varieties of pear, all the fruit trees are cut back for easy access for fruit picking and pruning. The allotment itself is made of a raised bed system-twelve in all; this is a rotational no dig garden which makes it easy to plant and manage. Herbs and cottage garden plants grow in between the beds to encourage bee pollination. At its most pared down embroidery needs only fabric, thread and a needle – but you can add a lot more if you wish! In this workshop we will use several types of thread to work a variety of stitches, adding texture and sparkle by means of beads and gems to create a wreath of greenery enclosing colourful flowers and a 3D butterfly. The finished project will be made into a card. Scissors, needles and 4" hoop will be available to use during the workshop, but do feel free to bring your own if you wish.
