Competition Winners: The lucky winners of 5 tickets each for the Rugby Miniature Railway are: Emily Judd of Hillmorton and Tom Warrender of Coton Park

Myself and Catherine had a day off to go to Ascot on the 20th June. It was our lovely friend Lisa’s Hen Do (well one of the many!) and we had a wonderful day, lots of laughs, lots of drinks with great company. It was an organised coach trip with The Bell at Hillmorton who looked after us brilliantly. Have a great July everyone,

How to protect your home If you’re anything like us, it can be very worrying to read and hear about thefts and burglaries in your local area. Recently there have been reports of an increase in thieves particularly targeting cars with keyless entry as well as breaking into outbuildings to steal equipment. There are also those who target the unsuspecting on their doorsteps as well as others strolling down streets to try their luck with any door that’s accidentally left unlocked. This news can leave you feeling helpless and vulnerable - like there is nothing to be done other than to wait for the inevitable. But that doesn’t have to be the case. There are steps that you can take to protect your home, your possessions, your loved ones.

One solution is CCTV CCTV can dramatically increase the security of your property or premises to keep you and your family protected. There are many benefits to installing CCTV:

1. Insurance deductions While financial gain probably isn’t your number one motivation, by evaluating your insurance policy, it’s likely you’ll find that the security of your property has a huge impact on the amount of money you will pay. Reducing the likelihood of your property being damaged or vandalised through installing CCTV will reduce the likelihood of making a claim and is likely to reduce your policy premium.

2. Visual crime deterrent CCTV subtly indicates to potential criminals that you take your security seriously. You’re sending a message that you will trace anyone who threatens your home and will pursue criminal charges using the filmed evidence. We recommend clearly advertising the presence of CCTV, ensuring unwanted guests stay clear.

3. Access footage even when you’re away Due to digital developments, you can now monitor the perimeter of your property from the safety of your home or can check on it from anywhere in the world - with remote viewing available through an app. This can give you peace of mind whilst allowing you to react quickly to any suspicious activity.

4. It doesn’t have to be expensive Many people think that the cost of CCTV is beyond what they can afford or more than they can justify spending. This isn’t true! We offer 3 ranges of systems - so there’s something to suit everyone’s budget. Our packages start from £400 which includes installation of full HD infrared cameras, motion detection and remote viewing.

How we can help? Warwickshire Digital is a local, family run business, specialising in CCTV, intruder alarms, digital aerials, WiFi hotspots and much more. With over 10 years experience in the industry, we know what works and are committed to exceptional customer service. We promise to offer honest advice with free no obligation quotes. Professionalism and good value is guaranteed. We can also help with other digital services: Creating or improving your TV signal Adding your current TV set up to additional rooms Boosting your WiFi connection

This r e n e p O e y E What An I recently discovered another fantastic local business offering amazing value for money products and a great service too. This was a real eye opening visit… A few of my family members wear glasses and we’ve always bought their glasses from the opticians where the eye test has been carried out. We never thought to go to an independent glasses supplier – we never realised the huge savings you can make and the excellent service level you get – we’ve been missing out!! Framed Eyewear are a family run business offering high quality professional Prescription Glasses at a fraction of high street prices! As a glasses wearer you DON’T have to buy your glasses at the same place you have your eye test. You, the customer can simply ask for the prescription and shop elsewhere for your glasses. So how can Framed Eyewear offer the glasses at such low prices? Well, let me tell you about this lovely small, local business: Colin Pooley has been in the optical industry for over 30 years. Starting his business Tritek, Colin designed optical machinery to make, shape, edge and polish lenses. This machinery has been sold far & wide and used for decades by hundreds high street opticians to make the lenses for your glasses. Colin still runs this business and works alongside his engineer son Jack and Ian his service engineer. 2 years ago, Colin’s wife Chris, Daughter Emma and husband Kris spotted a huge gap in the market and opened a new arm to the business which now trades as Framed Eyewear, supplying excellent quality branded glasses with Colin’s superb hand finished lenses. The family pride themselves on and have worked hard to provide you, the spectacle wearer, with a warm, friendly, non-pressured showroom to browse, try, and talk about what glasses suit you best. They have a huge range of brands at much much cheaper prices than the big national companies: DKNY, Storm, Superdry, Guess, D&G, Iceberg, Harley Davidson, Converse, Nike, Rayban to name but a few! Also in stock are a great range of sunglasses (although all

of the standard frames can be made as sunglasses too) & sports glasses including snooker glasses. The beauty of this is that Colin and Kris make the lenses on site from your prescription and with their vast knowledge & experience you really are in expert hands. Budget frames start at just £15 and Lenses from just £20, making glasses accessible to even the smallest budget. Even the branded frames are significantly cheaper than the big chains. There are hundreds of frames to choose from and you will be spoilt for choice. One thing that Chris and Emma have found is people have often bought 2 pairs of glasses to the equivalent price that they have paid in the past elsewhere, where others just have the 1 pair and enjoyed the big saving! Some opticians have rules in place about re-glazing existing frames too but here at Framed Eyewear they are more than happy to re-glaze your current glasses to your new prescription, again saving you money if you are on a budget or simply love the frames you already have. A 20% deposit secures your order and turnaround is generally 3-5 days although they can do it quicker if you need it, the balance is then payable on collection once your new glasses have been fitted, adjusted and you are completely happy with them. You can also order your new glasses online if you have single vision lenses. Based at Glebe Farm Industrial Estate with plenty of easy, free parking your are welcome to pop in at anytime Mon - Thurs 9am - 5pm or Friday 9am - 4.30pm (Saturdays by appointment) to browse the selection, chat through your options and order when & if you are ready. Don’t forget to take along your prescription with you - or at least your current glasses if you are just replacing them with no new prescription or wanting sunglasses. You can even just pop in for a quote and a chat, the quote is then valid for 6 months. It truly was an EYE OPENER just how much money you can save by simply taking your prescription to Framed Eye Wear and getting them to supply your glasses. Make sure you pay them a visit next time your glasses need changing.

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies not a problem for us! the many benefits of g n i m m i sw Swimming is one of the few things can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities, alone or with friends/family. Not only is it great for fitness & wellbeing but it can be very sociable too with many families enjoying fun time together in the pool. Here are just some of the many benefits of swimming:

The top 8 benefits (there are many more!) 1.

2. 3.

5. 6. 7. 8.

Full body workout. Swimming uses all the muscles in the body so whether you swim a gentle breaststroke or hammer butterfly, you will get a full body workout. Plus, exercising in water makes your body work harder so 30 minutes in a pool is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land.

Great for general wellbeing. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times a week alongside a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy and maintain a positive mental outlook. Do it with friends, and it’s even more fun! De-stresses and relaxes. Whether it’s work stressing you out, the kids being a nightmare, or just life in general, we all get times we just want to SCREAM. Well, help is at hand. Swimming regularly can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your sleep patterns. Feeling the mental benefits of swimming takes just a light swim. No lane pounding needed. Burns those calories. Swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. And a faster swim would see that indulgent chocolate bar gone quicker than if you went running or cycling. Lowers the risk of diseases. As well as being a great form of cardiovascular exercise, swimming just 30 minutes a week can help to guard against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Supports the body. Water supports up to 90 per cent of the body’s weight. So if you sprained an ankle at Monday night football or have a long term injury or illness, swimming is a brilliant way to stay active. Increases your energy levels. Inactivity and not ageing is often responsible for people’s lack of energy. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times per week can boost your energy levels through increased metabolic rate. Exercising without the sweat. If sweating puts you off other forms of exercise, fear not! As a swimmer, you’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water around you is constantly cooling you down.

The website is a great source of information for all things ’swim’ and even has a calculator on to show how many calories can be burned swimming and a comparison to other sports too. It’s worth looking at. Here in Rugby we have a wide choice to swimming pools and lessons (if you’re looking for them). Did you know we also have a privately owned Heated Endless Pool that can be hired? Check out our advertiser Theorytech opposite for details. Another advertiser, JKM Swim offer children’s crash courses during school holidays based at Bilton Grange School. You can find their advert opposite too.

Weeds: Leaving weeds in your garden

can damage your garden like nothing else. If you overlook the growth of weeds, they may cover your entire garden before you know it. As soon as you notice any weeds, get rid of them before they become a nuisance. Weeds should be removed along with their roots to prevent their growth in future. You can also use herbicides to get rid of wild plants and weeds.

Seeds to Sow:

With the sun on your side, there are plenty of seeds you can sow in July - six of the best are Delphiniums, Strelitzia, Forget-me-nots, Pansies, Wallflowers and Foxgloves.

L awn Care

Watering Lawns: Through long periods of summer drought, turf grasses turn brown and stops growing. This often looks a lot worse than it actually is, and the lawn will usually recover rapidly with renewed rainfall. However if you have a new lawn these need watering thoroughly, (provided there are no hosepipe restrictions in force). If you do want to keep your grass green there is a few simple steps: • • • • •

Hard ground? Aerate it by spiking with a garden fork before watering, this will help water penetration. Water the lawn early morning, evening or even night-time, to reduce water wastage from evaporation. Watering once every 7 to 10 days is normally sufficient. Move the hose pipe sprinkler every 12 minutes - that’s all it needs don’t waste any more water. Raise the height of the lawn mower - let short clippings fall back on to lawn this will act as mulch and slow down the evaporation of water.

Mike Dilger visits Houlton

Families get “really wild” at Houlton Rugby’s newest neighbourhood, Houlton, hosted a ‘Really Wild Adventure’ for local families. Over 80 children and parents joined the free activities on Bank Holiday Monday, exploring Houlton’s ecological habitats with The One Show’s wildlife presenter, Mike Dilger, and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. Children took part in nature-inspired games and activities, including a bug hunt across several green areas in the development, as well as enjoying educational presentations from Mike Dilger and experts throughout the day. Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and the onsite ecology team also surprised young guests with the addition of an aquarium, featuring Great Crested Newts, frogs and toads, offering the opportunity to meet and handle some of the creatures. The Really Wild Adventure club comes as part of Houlton’s unique environmental plans, delivered by master developer Urban&Civic, which includes the creation of extensive green spaces, ponds, wildlife corridors and ecological habitats throughout the development. In an effort to help preserve and encourage wildlife in Houlton, the programme will also see a conservation initiative to protect the Great Crested Newts and their natural habitat, as well as a ‘hedgehog highway’ project to help address a rapid decline in population of the species nationally. Galina Bardarska, Visitor Centre Manager at Houlton, said: “We were delighted to see so many local families and new residents join us for our Really Wild Adventure. I think people were really surprised by the extent and maturity of the green spaces we’ve already created. Families and children explored our rich ecological areas, our natural play, wildflower areas and finished with a play on our new adventure playground. “ “We’d like to thank everyone who attended the event, as well as Mike Dilger and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust for helping make the day so memorable,” she added.

D a al Tarka Daal I wouldn’t say I was a ‘Meatarian’ but if God wanted us to be vegetarian he wouldn’t have made animals out of meat! Before the hate mail, I am of course joking although that was the playful answer that a French friend of mine gave his new girlfriend when she suggested he give up meat. She didn’t last long!

I love vegetables on Wednesdays but I don’t think I could be wholly vegetarian, at least not on a western vegetarian diet or a far east diet of tofu and Soya protein. However the only food I ever actually crave are yellow Lentils, or the Indian dish ‘Tarka Daal’. This can be a delicious, light, yet protein laden meal which is all too often presented as a yellow porridge like sludge in most Indian restaurants. It is the staple diet of millions of Indians in India. Although this may be to economical reasons for many, but when done properly it is a meal that can equal any meat. The Ingredients Yellow and orange lentils: Freely available in most supermarkets Garlic: Fresh, bulbous fragrant balls of beauty Fresh tomato: Lovely, juicy, bouncy tomatoes if possible Garam massala: Home made if possible, just grind up roughly equal amounts of cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and cardamom Fresh Corriander: I can’t say anymore than that Turmeric: The 38th wonder of the world Water: Any council pop will do unless you live in Coventry! (I apologise if you’ve heard that before!) The Method Boil 2 cups of lentils to 6 cups of water with salt and turmeric and then simmer till the lentils are soft but still have a little bite. Set this aside. Chop 4-6 cloves of garlic and fry in a little oil and butter or ‘ghee’ till a little brown. Add chopped tomatoes and coriander and fry a little more till the tomatoes turn a deeper hue. Add the Garam massala and combine with the cooked lentils. Heat through, adding any final seasoning. I love flatbreads or chapatti’s with Daal but it is equally good with rice and some skinned cucumber and pickled onions which you can now sample on our Friday supper club menu.

Kitchen & Bathroom Creations has been established now for just over 6 years, starting in a small showroom in Hinckley, quickly expanding into the unit next door to double it's size and more recently opened showrooms in both Warwick and Rugby. As the name suggests, they specialise in creating quality but affordable bathroom and kitchen renovations. Offering a full renovation package from design to completion, they take care of all plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling etc and use only qualified tradesmen with the back up guarantees on all goods and labour supplied. The Company is family owned and run by the Director, James Holland, his wife Victoria and father Paul, who ran his own successful furniture retail outlet for over 30 years. The Hinckley showroom has recently been refitted, now with 6000 sq ft of retail and warehouse space with over 20 bathroom sets, and our complete new range of kitchens and bedroom sliding wardrobes on display.

After 6 years of trading, James feels the time is right to expand the business further to bring the successful formula of quality but affordability to other areas, and shortly in addition to Hinckley, Warwick and Rugby, we will be opening our branch in Bedworth. James would also like to point out that over the past 6 years we have successfully completed over 1000 renovations, and this year particular emphasis will be placed on the growth of our kitchen range wtth the four best selling lines, Gloss Slab, Tradttional Shaker, J.Pull Gloss, and the True Handless range being heavily promoted. James says • We are already cheaper than all of the big D.I.Y stores but by increasing our sales volumes, our prices will come down further, giving our customers even better value for money". KBC offer a free, no obligation planning service for your kitchen and bathroom and will either just supply your goods or fully manage all or part of your renovation project. If you just want to freshen up your tired kitchen, they also offer a door change service with many styles and colours to choose from.
