Editors Letter...

Hi everyone and welcome to the July Edition of The Rugby Register What a difference some sun makes! Wow, it’s been so lovely, at last I feel like summer is here - mind you that said, I went to Ascot and sitting in the 33 degree heat all day was actually quite uncomfortable but sshhh I shouldn’t compain!

Catherine is at Ascot today as I write this so I can’t share a pic of her in her fancy fascinator - we will save that for next month.

It’s been another busy month here preparing this months edition, lots of great advertisers and a whole host of things to go and do locally. Summer is always busy with fundraisers and school events and this year is no exception, it’s wonderful to see how many people get out and supporting these events. These days everyone seems to have an opinion about nutrition and what constitutes a good diet. Looking around its obvious to me that the major problem we all have is the amount of food we are consuming. There is just too much food and too much choice of food. Resisting all the temptations which are ever present is the main difficulty. This abundance of food, huge portion sizes and ever increasing sugar content of products is creating the obesity crisis, which in turn is creating the serious health issues experienced by many today.

What can we do then to improve our health easily without too much effort? It’s a difficult question which should be a lot easier to answer in the 21st century but it is not.

Here is the dilemma; because there is so much information about health, fitness and nutrition some of it is confusing and indeed conflicting.

The concept of super foods is a good example.

Does the marketing strategy of big companies encourage us to choose what food we eat?

Most myths about super foods are perpetuated by marketing efforts, which is why I prefer not use the term. The main reason a food is called a super food is simply because it contains high levels of antioxidants.

Antioxidant nutrients are essential because they can help protect the body from free radical damage, which is responsible for many major illnesses and indeed aging itself.

Antioxidants act as scavengers, helping to prevent free radical damage that could lead to cellular damage and disease. The body does have its own defense system of antioxidants, these are molecules which safely react with free radicals and neutralize them by donating one of their own electrons. To support this system the body needs the main vitamin antioxidants found in vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. These vitamins must be supplied by the diet as they cannot be manufactured by the body.

The following foods contain high levels of these vitamins.

Vitamin E: A fat soluble vitamin found in nuts, seeds, vegetable and fish oils, whole grain (wheat germ is an excellent source), apricots.

Vitamin C: found in citrus fruits and juices, peppers, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, kale, cantaloupe melon, kiwi and strawberries.

Beta-carotene: is converted to vitamin A by the body and found in liver, egg yolk, milk, butter,

spinach, carrots, squash, broccoli, yams, tomato, cantaloupe, peaches and grains.

One of my favorite foods, not usually mentioned as a super food are oats – I call them my artery-protecting antioxidants. They are a high fiber food containing beta-glucan known to be helpful in reducing high cholesterol levels which reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Research at Tufts University, Boston identified that oats contain a unique antioxidants call avenanthramides – phenol compounds which compare to the potent antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables.

Porridge made with organic oats, some added nuts and seeds to increase the protein content, is a good choice at breakfast.

In reality many people do not eat nearly enough fresh fruit and vegetables and are not getting the antioxidant protection from free radical damage from their diet. We need a balanced diet mainly consisting of lean protein, whole grains, including nuts, seeds and legumes, fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

A little caution here, there are some people who are allergic to some of these food groups and of course must avoid eating them.

The body requires energy for all its functions from taking our first breathe, to the elimination of waste, to the transmission of electrical and chemical signals in the nervous system. Food provides the energy needed, we digest it and metabolize its components. Eating a varied diet is beneficial to health as we are more likely to get the nutrients we require for all the intricate and miraculous functions the body performs. The more antioxidants i.e. protective substances your body ingests, the better your defences against diseases and ageing.

Good health is the most precious gift we have and we should honor that gift by giving our bodies the best food we can and not overeating at the expense of humanity and our planet.

The food we choose is only one aspect of good health although it is popular to state “We are what we eat”, we are actually so much more.

Carefully consider your choices but most importantly - Live with joy and health.

Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

So now we’re on the sequels!

Once upon a time my ex-wife wanted to move to Sicily and I wanted to move nowhere, well especially not to be close to her family who had married into the mafia. This impasse finally saw us move to France as a compromise where I opened my first Restaurant. A crazy, funny, tragic and downright unbelievable story ensued which is documented in a book I am hoping to release later this year. My ex-wife loved Italy and the food so we ate pasta most days some of which I learned on location from her Sicilian family. The question as to whether carrots have a place in a lasagne has even created a schism in the Vatican! One of my favourite dishes is pork meatballs in tomato sauce with spaghetti which I will perform for you here, you do know I cook each dish as I write it!

Feel free to embellish on any aspects of this dish but go too far and you can’t hold me responsible if tastes like a Walrus’s oily bits!

The Ingredients: Pork mince or sausage meat (literally): It doesn’t have to be ‘Peppa pig’ or ‘Babe’ but any good porker will do.

Fennel Seeds: They are what they are.

Onions: Spanish or if you prefer not to cry for Argentina then any other variety will be faintly adequate if not down right passable.

Garlic & chilli: As if it wouldn’t make an appearance in one of my recipes!

Herbs: The usual Italian suspects.

Harissa paste: If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, this is tantamount to cheat sauce. This could change your life or at the very least your cooking.

One egg: the fresher the better but you don’t need to float it in water, just check the date!

The Method: Toast the fennel seeds in a dry pan. We don’t want them too dark, just lightly toasted. Put them in a bowl. Place the mince in the same bowl. If you’re using sausages then I suggest Cumberland as these are already seasoned. I would choose something with more than a famous brand’s paltry 50-60% pork. Cut the end of the sausage and squeeze the contents out. I normally allow one sausage per meatball and about 3 meatballs per person or 2 big ones. Next, get your sous chef to finely chop the onion and an appropriate amount of garlic, and if you don’t have a sous chef then ask yourself why, failing that get your partner to do it and if you don’t have one of these either, then again, ask yourself why, however we may be able to help with that with our event ‘Single Mingle’ which we hope to host once a month!

Add the garlic and onions to the pork, sprinkle in some mixed Italian herbs, chilli, fresh basil, a teaspoon of harissa paste and the egg. Season generously. Mix the ingredients together but if you fancy yourself as a Mafiosi boss and don’t want to get your hands dirty then get someone else to do it by threatening to break theirs. Once it is well mixed then mould the mixture into good sized balls and fry them in a frying pan. I normally fry them in cold pressed rape seed oil as opposed to olive oil. Once these are golden they can be added to a rich tomato sauce and eaten with spaghetti.

Raise the height of the mower mid-July as lawn growth slows down.

This will help high traffic lawns not to look as tired. Keep edges along pathways trimmed with a lawn shears & edger.

Remember to water new lawns planted in spring during dry spells.

A summer feed can still be applied, if not already done so, where weeds are a problem use a combination of feed & weed.

Grass clippings can be added to the compost bins in layers with other plant clippings and compost accelerant.

Packing Tips: If you want to arrive on holiday with a suitcase full of crease free clothes, then rolling them up is definitely the way forward.

Another clever way is the ‘Burrito’. Have a look on the internet by searching ‘clothes packing burito’, there’s a couple of you tube video’s worth watching. You can roll & tuck a t-shirt into a tiny burrito and if you have children that are maybe going for a sleepover, on a school trip or cub camp for instance you could put a days clothes i.e, t-shirt, shorts, undies and socks all into a single burito and that way they don’t have to worry about what goes with what or where things are as it’s all in a neat little bundle. The biggest bonus of all is that they take up so little space.

At its most pared down embroidery needs only fabric, thread and a needle – but you can add a lot more if you wish! In this workshop we will use several types of thread to work a variety of stitches, adding texture and sparkle by means of beads and gems to create a wreath of greenery enclosing colourful flowers and a 3D butterfly. The finished project will be made into a card.

Scissors, needles and 4" hoop will be available to use during the workshop, but do feel free to bring your own if you wish.

23 July, Sunday - Every year, the village of Pailton holds a village fete which, as well as giving a good day out for all, raises funds for the upkeep of our village church of St Denys and the Village Hall. This year the event runs from 2pm to 5pm. There will be all the usual activities etc. that you would expect at a village fete, plus a few different ones!

These include, The “Villages Choir”, skittles, tombola, hot dogs, hammer slammer, white elephant and, book stalls, plant & preserves sales, have a go at pottery, try the locally made ice cream, refreshments cakes etc! 14, 15 & 16 July - Yelvertoft Theatre by the Pond and Caldecote Park are hosting Spitfire Theatre production of Shakespeare’ most farcical comedy, This drama is one of the great comedy plays by William Shakespeare.

Comedy of Errors relies heavily on mix-ups and witty dialogue. The characters include two sets of twins, Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse, Dromio of Ephesus and Dromio of Syracuse. Farcical mix-ups occur when all the twins all meet in Ephesus.

The themes of the play are reality, time, coincidence and love. This production will suit young and old alike. An excellent introduction to Shakespeare for the novice, and an fast-paced and exciting adaptation for those familiar with play. 07443906227- for info/book tickets.
