Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the February/March Edition.... Well I don’t know about you but I wasn’t expecting to be in Lockdown 3 when I was last chatting to you just before Christmas. That said, with the vaccine now in full swing we should be out of this soon and starting to see friends & family again which will be lovely. Spring is on its way, with lighter evenings and crocuses popping up everywhere, which is always nice to see - a small glimmer of warmer, brighter days ahead. As you can see from my picture I’m now down to 1 crutch and hobbling around in the house & office a lot with no crutch at all, although on my little walk outside each day I’m firmly on 2 crutches as I’m very nervous still. This recovery really has taken a lot longer than I, or the hospital for that matter, thought it would take but I am progressing so I can’t complain. I’m hopeful that by the spring I will be able to do some simple things again like drive, supermarket shop, go for a walk that’s longer than my current 5 minutes in the garden etc. Accidents like this and Covid 19 really do make you appreciate the small things in life. If you have children who are schooling at home I hope that’s going ok for you and them. We have 3 at home, so juggling work with managing them is challenging but I have to say the 3 schools my children go to are doing really well this time around and its not nearly as stressful as it was back in

Lockdown 1. Because of this Lockdown and in a bid to minimise risk to our wonderful 45 distributors, while still ensuring we support our advertisers we decided to combine the February and March editions into this 1 magazine. We will be Bionic Anne back to our usual monthly publications from the April edition. We have supplied our distributors with hand sanitiser and gloves to minimise risk and keep everyone as safe as we can. I hope you enjoy this edition; we’ve added in some fun puzzle pages, 1 for adults and 1 for the children too. We hope you enjoy them and the rest of the magazine and all it has to offer. Anne xx

Misty Double Glazing?

Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!

Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.

The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.

Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units

This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.

Clearly a great service!

in Loc e v ti i s o P Staying

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert Shares her thoughts on Staying Positive in Lockdown The New Year has certainly not started as we all would have hoped. Unfortunately, this wretched virus is still ruling our lives. Please remember to follow the Government guidance and keep safe. My son is a care worker, and he may now have the virus; he is strong and young, but I obviously do feel concerned, waiting anxiously for the result of his test. Many of you will have experienced the horror of this pandemic – it is a terribly worrying time. I for one have almost given up watching the news as it is all so depressing. Of course, we must be thankful that at least the vaccination programme is being rolled out efficiently and hopefully by Spring I will be writing a quite different article. We must feel a certain pride that we are well ahead of most other countries in organising the mammoth task of immunisation. What can we do to help ourselves stay well and feel positive? Firstly, as you will have heard this mantra before, we do need to get outside and exercise. You need to “Move that Body,” because it will make you feel better and it is so beneficial to our overall health. Perhaps a good way to build this into your daily routine is to think and appreciate that most of us can go out into the fresh air; consider those that are not able to exercise, those who have mobility problems. As you must know by now exercise is good for our cardio-vascular system, our digestion, our mental health, and our vitality. Exercise releases those endorphins that enhance our mood and just a good brisk walk can do that for us. It also means that although we must keep our safe distance you can still say hello and feel part of the community. If you live alone it will help you feel less isolated. Why not take this opportunity to learn something new? There are so many on-line courses available and a lot of them are free. Try the Open Culture website they are offering 1,500 free online courses, and there is www.theatre.com where there is so much to watch and enjoy ranging from Shakespeare to comedy. Remember to watch things that make you laugh because laughter raises our mood immediately and makes us feel more positive. Take time to be kind to yourself; a little pampering, lingering in the bath with some nice candles, massaging your feet, curling up with a good movie (after you have exercised) but generally be patient and kind to you. Often its easier to spoil other folk we never seem to have time for ourselves so indulge yourself for a change.

A good habit, which I have found helpful in keeping my spirits high during lockdown, is doing a gratitude diary. First thing in the morning, before you start your day write down three things in your life that you are grateful for and why. It is amazing how much difference it makes when we count our blessing. Listen to your favourite music, its such a tonic and can really relax the mind. Finally read; there is no better way of finding escape from all the misery than to read a good book. There is a myriad of books out there and reading is great for the brain, it keeps our brains firing on all cylinders and encourages our imagination to get to work, which helps improve our sleep. There are a few practical things we can do for our health to help protect us from this virus and if we are unlucky enough to catch it will hopefully reduce the severity of many of the symptoms. Its probably a good idea to be prepared so make sure your have the following at home: 1. Paracetamol 2. Cough medicine 3. Menthol crystals – take care with these but they are great at clearing your head. 4. Betadine for mouthwash and gargle 5. Strepsils to ease pain of a sore throat. The following are what I recommend, and I am taking at present, to help build immunity: 1. Vitamin C 2. Vitamin D3 3. Vitamin B complex I also highly recommend breathing exercises. If you would like me to send you some just email me, and I will happily forward them to you. Remember to keep smiling and keep safe. Live with joy and health. Ingredients 3 tbsp olive oil 2 onions , finely chopped 4 garlic cloves , crushed 2-3 cooking Spanish chorizo sausages, sliced 4 large potatoes 1 ½ litres chicken stock 200g curly kale , finely shredded Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onions, garlic and chorizo, then cook for 5 mins until soft. Throw in the potatoes and cook for a few mins more. Pour in the stock, season and bring to the boil. Cook everything for 10 mins until the potatoes are on the brink of collapse. Use a masher to squash the potatoes into the soup, then bring back to the boil. Add the kale and cook for 5 mins until tender. Ladle the soup into bowls, then serve drizzled with the remaining olive oil.

Ingredients 200g butter, plus extra for greasing 300g golden caster sugar 4 large eggs 75g plain flour 50g cocoa powder 410g can pear halves in juice, drained 100g plain dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) 25g flaked almonds (optional) cream or ice cream, to serve Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Lightly grease a roughly 20 x 30cm shallow ovenproof dish. Put the butter in a large saucepan and place over a low heat until just melted. Remove the butter from the heat and stir in the sugar until well combined.

Whisk the eggs together in a large bowl. Gradually add the eggs to the butter and sugar, beating well with a wooden spoon in between each addition. Sift the flour and cocoa powder on top of the egg mixture, then beat hard with a wooden spoon until thoroughly combined. Pour into the prepared tin or dish and nestle the pears into the chocolate batter. Put the chocolate on a board and cut into chunky pieces roughly 1.5cm with a large knife. Scatter the chocolate pieces over the batter and sprinkle with almonds, if you like. Can be frozen at this stage. Bake in the centre of the oven for 30 mins or until the mixture is crusty on the surface and lightly cooked inside. Do not allow to overcook, as the cake will become spongy rather than gooey in the centre. Serve warm with cream or ice cream

WHO REALLY KNOWS WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS ?

The British Government, the new President of the United States, leaders of the European Union, and many other Governments across the world, are striving to overcome the results of many, many years of man’s mismanagement which have brought devastating problems to the world. Is certain disaster coming? Will anyone be able to get us out of our present situation? What would you think if you turned on your radio or TV and heard the announcer say: ‘Breaking News: The cabinet is to meet to consider an exciting message received through a famous prophet, “I alone am God and there is no one else like me. From the beginning I predicted the outcome; long ago I foretold what would happen. I said that my plans would never fail, that I would do everything I intended to do. I am calling a man to come and accomplish what I have planned. I have spoken, and it will be done. Listen to me. I am bringing the day of victory near.” Such news, if genuine, is worthy of our attention. Our website offers the evidence for the truth of the Bible and its message enabling you to decide the true situation for yourself. It could be a life saver!

You can help a charity and it won’t cost you a penny

Did you know that used stamps can help to raise much needed funds for charity? Did you know that used stamps can help to raise much needed funds for charity? We all receive post every week, many of which have a stamp on and without knowing we could be throwing away money when we discard the envelope. Some time ago one of my children’s schools asked us to save used stamps and hand them in when we had a bundle. I simply got a small plastic pot and kept it in the kitchen, where we typically open our mail, and tore off each stamp that arrived. I also have a mug on my desk in the office so I can save the stamps from my business post too. The pots soon filled up and every so often I gave them to the school. They then sent them to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. When the school stopped supporting this charity I carried on saving the stamps, out of habit more than anything else, and after doing some further research I found that many charities collect used stamps and would be very grateful for them. I now save mine for Rugby Cats Protection. Think about Birthdays, Christmas etc when we typically receive more than usual. It takes ajust a few seconds to tear around the stamp so why not start today?

What do Charities do with them? Charities tend to sell large batches of used postage stamps to dealers, who then sort through the batches and sell the best specimens on to collectors. The remaining stamps from the batches usually get sold too, but for use in arts and crafts instead. So this is a win win situation for everyone involved. Just think about how much we can help if we all saved our stamps. You might not even have a charity in mind, but by starting saving them today you can hand them over at a later date once you have decided who & where to send them to. I have put a sample list of a few local charities below to help get you started but if you support a particular charity it may be worth asking them if they accept used stamps too. For us its a small simple thing to do but could make huge difference to a charity, and at the minute they are all suffering due to the pandemic, so I am sure they would appreciate any help you could give. The aim is for volunteers and their Younger Friends to be able to cook together online and maintain their friendship during lockdown. “I had a very frugal upbringing and the kind of cooking I teach is trying to make simple ingredients more exciting through good use of store cupboard essentials and cheap, fresh ingredients. Anne The Friends of St Cross have received another fantastic donation from Coventry Building thanks to a the support and learn Society, the basics, eat healthier diet an generosity of its members. the emphasis on sustainability and affo This is the fourteenth donation that the Society has made to the charity and is based on 1% of the average savings balances held in Supporters accounts which support the Friends of St Cross over a 12 month period. The cheque this year was for a massive £22,828, taking the grand total to date, to an amazing £289,374!

Willy Goldschmidt, Chairman of the Friends of St Cross, said “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on our regular fundraising income and so the annual donation made possible by the community’s investment in the Supporters Account is all the more important, enabling the Charity to continue to make a real difference to the experience of patients. Furthermore, it has helped support the expansion of services offered at the hospital as well as Rugby’s community health services. At our AGM in September, we announced that we have committed £200,000 to the creation of a Chemotherapy Services unit at the Hospital of St Cross. This will be of great benefit to local patients who will no longer need to travel to Coventry. It will also provide much-needed expanded capacity for the Trust, as the number of patients who suffer from cancer is increasing and more treatment options are becoming available. This is the largest single donation that the Charity has made in the 65 years since its foundation.” Sonia Wood-Williams, Rugby Branch Manager at Coventry Building Society, said: “It’s great that we can continue to support the Friends of St Cross with the help of our members. The past year has been difficult for the Friends to fundraise but their work in the local community is more vital than ever.” Photo: Willy Goldschmidt, Chairman of The Friends collected a cheque from the Coventry Building Society.

SPRING GARDENING TASKS Why not try your hand to a new garden project. A mini greenhouse is a great addition to any garden, with the extra protection of growing under glass allowing a much wider variety of plants to be raised, and the growing season to be greatly extended. You could even have your own grown salad available all year round! There are lots of designs, to suit the size and shape of your space. Growing is a most satisfying and relaxing hobby, providing plenty of enjoyment without the full scale commitment of a large greenhouse. Be warned - it m ay be advisable to secure the greenho wall, so it isn’t bl us own away.
