Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the February Edition of The Rugby Register So 2018 is in full swing and people seem to be busy organising & planning events. We are busier than ever with our community news page, it’s really great to see so many fundraising events happening locally. Inside this months jam packed magazine you will find lots of wonderful local advertisers together with articles, features and our ever popular comprehensive What On Guide & Regular Events pages. I’ve spotted crocusses popping through the ground on the village green so in my mind Spring is very nearly here - and very welcome it will be too! Let’s hope the warmer weather brings better health for us all, I can’t beleive how many people have been ill this winter, it seems to have been worse than ever. Have a wonderful February everyone and Happy Valentines to all the romantics out there!

addox Home Interiors have gone mobile. Still offering all of the fantastic range of products and services - now with the added benefit of choosing your new soft furnishings in the comfort of your own home. The family business, started by Tim’s dad, has been trading for over 40 years from the same shop at 282 Hillmorton Road. Unfortunately Tim’s dad (who retired a number of years ago) died earlier in the year and due to probate law the shop has to be sold. So Tim and Doreen would like to let all their customers past & present know that although they will no longer be trading from the shop they will still be offering all the usual amazing range of products and services in a mobile capacity. Being mobile has some great benefits for their customers such as appointments at a time to suit you and the ability to offer up the samples to existing furniture/ decoration.

RUGBY LADIES BADMINTON CLUB We are honoured to celebrate the RUGBY LADIES BADMINTON CLUB running for 70 consecutive years since 1947. Records have been found that we played at the Old Hall, Rugby School, the gymnasium on the Dunchurch Road since 1978 to 1995 and we then moved in 1996 to the Griffin Centre, Lawrence Sheriff School, and have played there to this day. Our numbers have fluctuated over the years and at one time we had 2 teams in the Coventry League, one of which gained promotion to the Premier Division and one team in the Rugby League, which only had one division. In the past few years we have been a Social Club only. We play on Monday evenings from 7.15pm. to 9.15pm. If you want to join our fun and friendly ladies club, feel free to contact us by emailing rlbc123@yahoo.co.uk or call Linzi on 07747 600641.

Bespoke Independent Financial Advice You Can Trust P J L F i n a n c i a l S e r v i c e s was established in 2011 by our manager Paul Loveridge who has amassed over 20 years experience within the financial services industry, having grown steadily since then and we are now a team of six highly motivated and trustworthy individuals. We are a directly authorised firm of Independent Financial Advisers and Mortgage Advisers based in the midlands. We offer impartial financial advice on many aspects of both personal and business needs with our bespoke financial planning service. Here at PJL Financial Services the client really does come first and we understand and respect the fact that financial planning is not a one size fits all product, which is why our team of highly experienced professionals are committed to providing the very best advice for each individual client and we can guarantee that any advice given will be part of a bespoke package specifically tailored to you and your needs. We provide advice on mortgages, buy to lets, savings and investments, all aspects of retirement planning (personal pensions, company pensions, drawdown pensions and annuities), life and critical illness planning, income protection, insurances and estate planning. We often find that people have old, out of date policies and pensions which have not been reviewed for many years which may not be providing the best value for money anymore and by simply updating to a newer cheaper plan or even just altering the investment funds within an existing plan the potential returns can be dramatically improved.
Mortgage Consultancy - Free Consultations - Access to whole of the market - Over 20 years of mortgage experience - Access to exclusive deals - Supply of solicitors at your request - Advice and guidance throughout, from application to completion With our help, your house buying/ remortgage process can be simple and stress free.

Big enough to cope, small enough to care
All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.
CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Improve your health in 2018 part II.. There are so many awful bugs about at the moment, not least this new flu virus so we do need to wrap up and keep warm and be good to ourselves. As you know I believe exercise is the very best way to improve our overall health and gentle movement can help you feel better; just don’t over do it and be sure to wear the right clothing for the weather! January and February are probably the most difficult months of the year for us to cope with, for quite a few reasons. We have the short dark days and we have the very changeable weather conditions. Also many people become sick with colds and flu and everywhere looks rather bleak but do not despair I saw a clump of snowdrops last week so Spring really is on its way! At the beginning of the year there is a lot of pressure put on us to join a gym, undertake a new diet or set ourselves masses of unrealistic goals. Failure never makes us feel good as we are all our own worst critics so be kind to yourself. Why do we put pressure on ourselves? Life is already stressful enough without encouraging negative internal feedback. Those amazing conversations we have about how fat we are, how stupid or my favourite, how lazy. I am not good at sitting down doing nothing – there is a voice inside telling me no there are masses of jobs to do. Poems, articles and books to write, people to see and motivate; the list is endless. I am sure you are the same; the stresses and strains of the modern world keep us busy all of the time. It has made me wonder whether its time to rethink how we should look after our health and wellbeing. I was listening to a talk by a doctor who is now suggesting to all his patients that taking care of their mental health will without doubt help improve their physical health. Chronic stress is creating disease in the body, making us fat and putting pressure on the NHS. I have a lot of overweight clients and the one thing I notice is that they are all stressed. Stress in the body releases cortisol. Cortisol is an important hormone in the body’s response to stress but it does encourage the body to hold on to fat. Prolonged high levels of cortisol damage the body so we need to be able to relax so the body can return to its normal state. Cortisol is part of the fight flight response. My message this year is for you all to be more kind and compassionate not just to others, as I wrote last month but most importantly to yourself. Find time, even if its only 15 minutes each day, just to take a break and sit quietly and let your thoughts concentrate solely on your breath. Release that stress & tension and be gentle with that miraculous body. If you would like some breathing exercises, just contact me and I can email you them. As many gurus will tell you breath is everything and breathing correctly is a powerful way of improving your health.
O O his also of th My next anti-stress advice is to have a plan, a strategy for every aspect of your life. Forward planning and T he p being organised does make a huge difference to how we feel and will certainly reduce the stress that results from dashing around at the last minute. Remember to find time for some quiet relaxation for yourself – even of mec ligam if it is only a long soak in the bath, it is very important to take time to recharge your batteries. e mech n an One of my favourite forms of exercise is yoga and it is wonderful way of calming the body. Exercise is n probably the best method of de-stressing, I know it is difficult to fit exercise into a busy schedule but believe ervous T he pr me you will have more energy and less stress if you just take 30 minutes exercise at least five days each maani ima week. If your nerves are really frazzled I recommend you take a good Vitamin B supplement and always eat p comp ulati healthy diet reducing your intake of processed foods. This year start to take more care of yourself; now that laint range a would be a really good goal to keep! of m is o

Rugby Operatic Society present My Fair Lady For over 50 years Rugby Operatic Society have been staging a wide variety of light operas. They have performed a number of Guilbert & Sullivan operas as well as others such as Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, Orpheus in the Underworld to name but a few. This year they are performing My Fair Lady from the 13th to 17th February at Avon Valley School. The show, a musical adaptation of Shaw’s Pygmalion, is regularly produced on the professional stage and was a hugely successful 1964 film with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. It was nominated for 12 Oscars and it won 8 including Best picture, Director, Leading actor and costume design for Beaton’s iconic Ascot Gavotte, which will be replicated in this production. The score is full of wonderful Lerner and Loewe compositions including Wouldn’t it be loverly; I could have danced all night; The rain in Spain; Get me to the Church on time and On the street where you live. This year the society have also pulled in other talent from local dance schools and performers to add to this fabulous and hugely popular show.

Plant Fluit Trees -
Continue to plant soft fruit as the weather permits. Any uncompleted pruning of established fruit trees and bushes should be carried out straight away before growth commences, otherwise this year’s crop may be reduced. It is a good time to prune sideshoots back to two or three buds on trained gooseberries. Rhubarb crowns should be covered with buckets which will help to encourage early pickings, also lift and separate any congested clumps.
B ir d F e e di n g
Jasmine:
As winter jasmine finishes flowering, Prune back some of the flowered stems, right back to the main branches from which they arise. This is also a good time to layer longer, trailing branches to make new plants. Dig up a little scoop of earth, lay a branch along it, then bury it again. Pin it down with a tent peg or stone and water it. This time next year you will be able to sever the little rooted section and pot it up to make a new plant.
Bird Feeding: The weather is still cold this month so hang fat balls
and keep bird feeders topped up to attract birds, who will in turn eat pests in your garden, its a win win for all.

Life is full of fads…and ads…for the fads. Instead of a vegetable or fruit simply being healthy for you, this year it has to be described as super. Every new single released is never called out on what it is, which is the same old hash of a mediocre song now being made even more mediocre by a trio of tuneless juvenile ‘wonder kids’ who use to be in a band that was briefly popular after each of them were put together in a tv show. Although there is nothing new about this, I grew up watching ‘The Monkees’.
To bring this back to food, as it is after all a recipe page, Avocado has been marketed as a new super food and has starred in many fads. When we first opened it was by far the most popular selling item on the menu and something we have stuck with as unlike many fads, this actually has substance as well as style. I’ve never really enjoyed Avocado until I tried smashing it and adding lardons and a poached egg to it. This is a cracking breakfast as it straddles the line between being healthy and dirty which is what you really need in life, a little Ying and Yang that gives our lives the balance we need. The Ingredients Avocado: The riper the better but slightly less than bruised An egg or two: It doesn’t have to be a duck egg but as with most things, the fresher the better Lardons: I prefer smoked but this isn’t necessarily necessary Sourdough: Some are abnormally thick but I use a thinner, leaner bread The Method This one is straight forward… Smash the Avocado and season with salt & pepper. Boil some water in a pan with some white wine vinegar. Heat a frying pan on the highest heat. Once the pan is burning hot, sear the lardons. Once the water boils turn it down and a moment later drop in the egg. Some people say you should swirl the water before adding the egg but I prefer just to say a prayer! Cook the egg briefly and try and get it out without it breaking. Toast the bread and butter it. Spread the Avocado over generously before topping it with the Lardons and poached egg. Top this with freshly ground pepper, chives and paprika and enjoy it guilt free in the knowledge that you’re treating your body well. This is still our favourite and possibly signature breakfast dish.

Well done to last months winner - E Bouvier of Eastlands
Films Coming to the Cinema during February Winchester: Release Date: 2 February 2018 The Plot: Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester (Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman”s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters... Cast: Helen Mirren, Sarah Snook, Jason Clarke and Agus Sampson
Finding Your Feet: Release Date: 23 February 2018 The Plot: On the eve of retirement a middle class, judgmental snob discovers her husband has been having an affair with her best friend and is forced into exile with her bohemian sister who lives on an impoverished inner-city council estate. Cast: Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie, Timothy Spall, Joanna Lumley, David Hayman Father Figures: Release Date: 16 February 2018 The Plot: Wilson and Helms are Kyle and Peter Reynolds, brothers whose eccentric mother raised them to believe their father had died when they were young. When they discover this to be a lie, they set out together to find their real father, and end up learning more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know.

SEE WHAT KBC CAN CREATE FOR YOU Kitchen & Bathroom Creations has been established now for just over 6 years, starting in a small showroom in Hinckley, quickly expanding into the unit next door to double it's size and more recently opened showrooms in both Warwick and Rugby. As the name suggests, they specialise in creating quality but affordable bathroom and kitchen renovations. Offering a full renovation package from design to completion, they take care of all plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling etc and use only qualified tradesmen with the back up guarantees on all goods and labour supplied. The Company is family owned and run by the Director, James Holland, his wife Victoria and father Paul, who ran his own successful furniture retail outlet for over 30 years. The Hinckley showroom has recently been refitted, now with 6000 sq ft of retail and warehouse space with over 20 bathroom sets, and our complete new range of kitchens and bedroom sliding wardrobes on display. After 6 years of trading, James feels the time is right to expand the business further to bring the successful formula of quality but affordability to other areas, and shortly in addition to Hinckley, Warwick and Rugby, will be opening branches in other areas shortly. James would also like to point out that over the past 6 years we have successfully completed over 1000 renovations, and this year particular emphasis will be placed on the growth of our kitchen range with the four best selling lines, Gloss Slab, Traditional Shaker, J.Pull Gloss, and the True Handless range being heavily promoted. James says " We are already cheaper than all of the big D.I.Y stores but by increasing our sales volumes, our prices will come down further, giving our customers even better value for money". KBC offer a free, no obligation planning service for your kitchen and bathroom and will either just supply your goods or fully manage all or part of your renovation project. If you just want to freshen up your tired kitchen, they also offer a door change service with many styles and colours to choose from.
