Hi everyone and welcome to the December Edition of The Rugby Register As many of you will know Catherine & I love to include a Festive picture for you in the December edition and this year is no exception, although we couldn’t which to use this time so I added both the nose & tash is my personal favourite!

We’ve had a wonderful, yet difficult time picking a Winner from all the wonderful children’s competition entries that we received. A big big thank you to all the parents who have let their children enter. We really are very grateful. I hope you agree that the winner on the front cover is superb, a big well done to Jasmine Khan. There were so many lovely entries this year that we’ve included a selection of them on pages 45 & 46 as well as the 2nd & 3rd place winners.

Don’t forget our Poetry Corner corner is being featured each month, so if you have or want to write anything please do so and send it in, we will publish as many as we can.

Local Choir Celebrates its 150th Anniversary!

The Rugby Philharmonic Choir has been proudly performing in the heart of our town since its formation in 1867.

Supporting a varied and wide-ranging repertoire with a chorus of some hundred voices, the Philharmonic has been at the heart of Rugby’s artistic community for most of the last hundred and fifty years. It has always had a strong association with Rugby School and its concerts are regularly held in its spacious and impressive Temple Speech Room.

The “Phil”, as it is affectionately known, was founded 150 years ago in 1867, under the first President the Reverend John Moultrie (Rector and Poet), where choir members paid a subscription of just 1 penny a week!

Over the past years, guest soloists including Janet Baker, Norma Procter, Kathleen Ferrier, John Shirley Quirk, to name but a few, have performed with the choir.

The choir’s repertoire is drawn from a wide range of musical genres. They perform both Sacred and Secular choral works through to Opera and Musical Theatre. Rehearsals are joyous, hardworking occasions where increasing membership continue to ensure that the “Phil” moves forward into the 21st century, thus keeping its long traditions alive and intact for future generations of singers and musicians.

Under the Leadership of their Musical Director, Mervyn Bethell, 2017 has been an exciting celebratory year for the choir for many reasons; they had the highly acclaimed composer and conductor John Rutter at a ‘Come and Sing’ event in April, in July they were invited to sing as a choir at Songs of Praise in Northampton - a wonderful accolade for the choir. Then a superb Summer Concert to capture the essence of the anniversary theme and lastly their grand finale of Handel’s Messiah to be performed on the 16th December. Members of the choir are in the final stages of updating a book on the Rugby Philharmonic’s history which captures some wonderful events over the past 150 years, including details of Conductors, Musical Directors and Soloists. As part of the Choir’s charitable status, they are donating £1867, (the year that the choir was founded ) to The Arnold Foundation – A Rugby School charity, enabling the lives of boys and girls from some of the country’s most deprived communities to benefit from boarding education at this prestigious School.

Charity calls for Rugby, Coventry and Warwickshire residents to open homes and hearts to care-leavers..

Barnardo’s is appealing for Rugby, Coventry and Warwickshire residents to open their homes and hearts to young people leaving the are system.

While providers do not have the same responsibility as parents or foster carers, they are asked to be there in a supportive role while young people prepare for adulthood and independence.

They provide a supportive and stable home environment while also offering help with education, job hunting, budgeting, cooking and other skills.

Barnardo’s spokesman Michael Spillane said: “Care-leavers are one of the most vulnerable groups in society and sometimes don’t have the life experience to begin living independently. They may leave care with no qualifications or financial stability and they are at significant risk of homelessness. However, supported lodgings providers can make a dramatic difference to their prospects by welcoming them into their home, taking an interest in their well-being, and boosting their skills and confidence.”

Applicants must be over 21 and need to have a spare bedroom and the use of a shared kitchen and bathroom.

They will be provided with weekly payments for rent, food and other costs. Ongoing support, supervision and training will also be provided.

Michael added: “Just about anyone can help a young person leaving care. Even the simplest things – such as having someone who will ask if you’ve had a good day, or returning home to a healthy meal – can mean so much to a young person who is alone and unsure of their place in the world.”

Bird seed mixtures. These contain a range of different seeds, but the best ones include lots of flaked maize, peanut granules and sunflower seeds, so look out for those. Avoid ones which contain beans, dried rice or lentils as only large birds can eat these, which may deter smaller birds from your garden.

Niger (Nyjer) seeds, black sunflower seeds and peanuts are all great choices, as they all contain lots of fats or oils so will help birds to fuel up well. NO salted or dry roasted peanuts.

Food bars, ‘bird cake’ or fat balls are great for birds, especially in the winter months when they need extra fat. Make your own at home by using a mixture of melted fat (lard or suet), nuts, oatmeal, cheese, dried fruit and seeds, and set until hard. This detailed tutorial explains how to make fat balls. However, if you buy any of these treats, remember to remove any mesh bags before putting the balls out, as these can injure birds.

Keep those Plants Warm - When winter bites, we can simply duck

indoors or throw on a woolly jumper - but some of our plants don’t have it easy. Plummeting temperatures, frost and rain can take their toll, causing roots to die or rot, Damaging foliage and killing the central growing point of plants. Good mulching around delicate plants, bubble wrap around pots can help. Protect the crowns of tree ferns and insulate their trunks by wrapping them in layers of fleece or hessian stuffed with straw. Cordylines and palms should be treated similarly, by tying their leaves into bunches, to protect their crowns.

As we approach the new year and the one year anniversary of ‘three’ it is time to reflect on just how fabulous I, or we (there’s no ‘I’ in team they keep telling me!) have been. Every year my only wish for the next year is that I can be even better, as a man, husband and…so on and so forth...

Those that have been to ‘three’ will have noted that it is quite minimalist and we’ve tried to carry this through to our food. We try and create dishes with three main elements such as a spicy lamb, sweet potato mash and mange touts. We try and bring the best out of each of these elements to make the dish sing as a whole rather than over complicate each one. When cooking, as with life, you always have to ask yourself whether adding something is going to improve it, which is even more poignant when it comes to arguments or heated discussions with your partner!

Now having said that, this month’s recipe is a bit of a faff so that you can see we aren’t just making excuses because we can’t cook anything more complicated!

The Ingredients Chicken leg or thigh and drum: It’s just too easy to overcook and dry out a breast and even the best cooked breast just doesn’t have the taste or succulence of the leg Butternut squash: The straighter the better as it will be easier to cut Red onion: Fresh and…er…red Garlic & Herbs: It’s in the title so it has to be in!

Cumin: The highly versatile spice makes an appearance Lardons: Not a vegetable but thickly cut bacon pieces Charlotte potatoes: They’re petite, they’re not Jerseys or Pipers Broccoli: Again, the fresher the better The Method Drizzle the chicken with oil and season with salt, pepper, herbs and finely chopped garlic and set aside.

Skin and cube the butternut squash and roast with chopped garlic and cumin till soft. Slice the potatoes long ways with the skin on and place in an oven dish. Skin and cut the onion in half and place with the potatoes. Sear the chicken in a frying pan till the skin has some colour. Place the chicken in the same oven dish dousing the potato slices and onion with the oil from the pan. Roast the chicken, potatoes and onion in the oven for about 25-30 minutes at 160 degrees. While these are making themselves beautiful in the oven turn your attention to the green bit of this recipe, the broccoli. Slice each floret into thin slices and blanche in salty water before plunging into iced water before setting these aside. Once the chicken is ready cover with foil and allow to rest. Next, make a roux in a saucepan by melting some butter and stirring in some plain flour vigorously to avoid lumps. Dissolve some chicken stock in some boiling water and add to the roux once it has cooled a little. I like to add a little Dijon mustard for old times sake. Take a frying pan and throw in the lardons before adding the broccoli slices. Sear for a few moments till the lardons look scorched. Blend the butternut squash and swirl on the plate that exercises some of your creativity. Place the chicken on top in a pleasing fashion and nestle the onion somewhere warm, preferably around the meat. Place the potato slices around the meat before decorating this like a Christmas tree with the ‘baubles’ of broccoli and lardons. Then dress with the gravy.

Enjoy with some crisp white wine or your wife or mistress or indeed Mr. Whatever you do, you have yourself a very merry Christmas before I see you again on the other side when we’ll all be a little older and possibly wiser.

The Bank of England has raised its bank rate recently for the first time in a decade - but we’re here to cut through the jargon and answer, what does this mean for you and your mortgage?

I’m on a fixed rate mortgage Generally speaking, if you’re on a fixed rate mortgage, you won’t see a difference in your payments.

For those of you who still have a while left on your fixed rate mortgage i.e. 3 or 4 year fixed, you won’t notice any difference in your payments now. However, if you’re close to the end of your term, please bear in mind that when your term ends, you’ll fall onto the lender’s variable rate which could result in a rise in your payments.

I’m on a tracker mortgage If you have a tracker mortgage which tracks the Bank of England bank rate, this means that you will see a change in your monthly payments. This is a common mortgage type for many landlords, and according to the Bank of England, 43% of homeowners are currently on variable or tracker mortgages too, so if you’re included in this figure, then you may notice a slight increase in your expenditure each month going forwards now.

I’m on a standard variable rate mortgage If you’re on a standard variable rate (SVR) mortgage, you’ll need to check what your lender has changed its rate to. The lender’s decision will impact the extra amount you will have to pay each month.

In light of this, now could be a good time to consider remortgaging. This way, you could potentially switch to a better rate, or move to a fixed rate mortgage to give you the stability of regular payments.
