Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the August Edition of The Rugby Register Well, I for one am not going to complain about this weather, its amazing! How many of us moaned when it snowed in March? I definitely did and for that reason I am loving this wonderful summer we’re having. I cannot remember a year when its been this hot before for so long. People tell me it was way back in 1976 but I was just a few years old then so can’t remember it! I know the gardens are suffering and the water supply is a little iffy now and then but if we are all conscious & careful with the water supply we will be just fine. My daughter complained the other day while walking to town about how hot she was and I promptly reminded her of the March snow and that keep complaining doesn’t cool you down - she soon embraced the wonderful sun and kept quiet! The slight frustration about the heat is the increase in bites, I’ve had a few nasty ones myself as have my family so I have put an article in from the NHS about coping with bites, have a read and perhaps pin it to the fridge in case you need it.

August, so why not have a go. And as its the holidays there is also a kids page in this month to keep the little ones entertained.

Anne

Have you heard of Rugby Bareboards Trust? They are a charity based in Hillmorton and on page 20 you can read all about them and what they have to offer. Have a great, sunny August everyone, stay safe in the sun!

Anne xx P.S If you are looking for a fan check out the back page. Home Hydro have lots in stock!

We have our fantastic competition in again this month to win Cineworld tickets - great if you are entertaining children or grandchildren this

Rugby Bareboards Trust This fantastic charity has been helping those in need in Rugby for over 20 years. Their main help comes in providing furnishings and household equipment to those who have found themselves in hard times or starting over - particularly homeless people or women coming out of a refuge (often with children), or any person on benefits or low income finding it difficult to furnish a home with the basics. It really is a super local charity doing some amazing work. So how can we, the lovely people of Rugby help? Well, Rugby Bareboards Trust is a not for profit charity based in Hillmorton which began back in 1996. The shop in Warren Road, Hillmorton which is open to the public, sells good quality second hand furniture, household and garden items, kitchenware, vintage, retro & quirky items all at realistic prices. All electrical appliances are PAT tested by volunteer electricians and furniture has the necessary safety/fire labels. The shop is stocked from donated items by you the kind public. These might be items you no longer need/want, it may be a house clearance or maybe you are downsizing and have too much for your new place. Whatever the reason, Bareboards would be delighted to talk to you about your items to see if they are suitable to be in the shop. Items can be collected for free by the Trust too. The income from the shop helps fund the charity and obviously donations from the general public also go to help furnish the homes of those in need. Most of those people are referred by organisations such as Rugby Council, Hope 4, Children’s services and Women’s refuges. An assessment is done and in most cases this wonderful charity is able to provide them with all the basics needed: beds, mattresses, bedding, wardrobe, drawers, bedside table, kitchen table, lounge unit, sofa, some white goods and even small appliances & crockery in return for a very small donation. As you can image the recipients are so very grateful and often overwhelmed by the charities generosity, but none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the lovely general public donating their un-wanted items to be re-used and re-sold by Rugby Bareboards. So next time you’re having a sort out please do consider donating to them. Your items really will go to good use and next time you’re near Hillmorton why not pop into the Warren Road shop - there really are some hidden gems in there! If anyone has a few hours to spare and could volunteer to help in the shop, Rugby Bareboards would love to hear from you, or if you would like to fund raise on their behalf with a sponsored event for example that would be wonderful! Opening Times: Mon-Fri: 9am-4pm, Sat: 10am-1pm

HOW DOES OSTEOPATHY WORK? The principle of osteopathy is that the well-being of an individual relies on how bones, muscles, ligaments, connective tissues and internal structures work together. A symptom you experience is often actually linked to a problem elsewhere in your body. During an assessment an osteopath takes into account the whole of you to understand your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. The osteopath then formulates an individual treatment, exercise, diet and rehabilitation program to achieve the best outcome for you. • • • • •

Back, neck or hip ache Muscle or joint pain Sports injuries Osteoarthritis Sciatica

• Headache • Osteopathy in pregnancy and after birth • Cranial Osteopathy • Osteopathy for children

Treatment is included from your first appointment, if appropriate.

Lavender: It’s time for the summer chop.

This pruning regime will keep an English lavender plant compact for many years and a well-pruned plant can last for twenty years or more without becoming woody.

Wild grass: We are obsessed with neat short lawn with stripes! However long grass has loads of benefits for wildlife. It is a mini jungle, moist and sheltered at its base, producing abundant flowers, pollen and seeds. Beetles, caterpillars of various moths and butterflies, grasshoppers – they all benefit, and so then do birds, bats, Hedgehogs and others. Try leaving squares of long grass or why not mow a path with curves and turns through the longer grass, giving you meandering walks, If you want to keep the kids entertained you could even mow a maze in the grass! It saves loads of mowing time and looks great. So why not give it a go this summer? Just keep mowing the pathways as you normally would every couple of weeks.

Pruning Wisteria: To ensure lots of flowes on Wisteria correct pruning is

required. Wisterias are pruned twice a year, at this time of year and again in January/February. When a wisteria has finished flowering it produces lots of long whippy branches. If the plant is still young tie these stems to the trellis or wires to create the framework for the plant. As the plant grows it becomes necessary to prune at this time of year to control the size of the wisteria and prevent it spreading onto roofs and gutters. The pruning also encourages the plant to form the flower buds for the following year. Use a pair of secateurs to cut each of the unwanted long stems back so that they have five or six sets of leaves and tie them back to the support.

lack of circulation at the site of the injury and this dictates the type of manipulative procedure. Chiropractic and osteopathy have similar backgrounds and some techniques used are almost identical. Both disciplines are conducted by highly qualified professionals and the treatments offered have proved very beneficial for many people. Always remember the importance of good nutrition for your overall health. A healthy diet can help alleviate pain by reducing inflammation and raising levels of serotonins. Include bright coloured vegetables and fruit, oatmeal, seeds and oily fish.

When we eat a varied diet which includes these natural antioxidant foods we are supporting the body’s own defence system and also holding back the years. Experts estimate that as little as 25% of body ageing is down to our genes. The rest is a combination of lifestyle, diet, and environment. By providing the body with a good source of antioxidant foods we can actually age more slowly and I am sure we all want that effect! Therefore we should all be eating our five portions of fruit and vegetables every day to protect our bodies from free radical damage and improve our overall health. In reality many people do not meet these guidelines so while the sun is shining and there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables why not increase your intake and feel the health benefits? A cautionary note is needed here; recent research is suggesting that high doses of antioxidant supplements can be harmful. At high concentrations antioxidants may act as pro-oxidants, increasing oxidation, protecting dangerous cells (such as cancer cells), as well as healthy cells, reduce the health benefits of exercise and have unwanted side effects, including nausea and headaches. Therefore it is important to increase your intake of naturally occurring antioxidants found in all those beautifully colourful fruits and vegetables. Live with joy and health. Some say that afternoon tea was introduced in 1840 by the seventh Duchess of Bedford to fill the gap between lunch and dinner as she often became hungry about four o’clock. Indians are a little less regimented and will stop for Chai and snacks at any time of the day. Although that isn’t confined to Indians as most people will now stop for a tea or coffee throughout the day with afternoon tea as popular as ever. I use to run quite a special routine in my twenties where I would normally sleep around three or four in the morning and be up at six thirty so would normally only manage an average of three hours sleep a night. As a result my eating times were all over the place but I definitely needed a thirty minute power nap every day at four followed by ‘Chai’, an Indian spiced tea and Pakoras.

A version of pakoras are served as onion bhajis in many Indian restaurants but I’ve never had anything resembling these bland hideous doughy balls of misery in India or any Indian’s house. This recipe is one of my mother’s, who is still the greatest Indian cook I have ever encountered. The Ingredients Gram flour: Freely available in most ‘special’ supermarkets or more enlightened main stream ones Garlic: Fresh, bulbous fragrant balls of beauty Ginger: You can buy the tubes which cuts out a lot of peeling, chopping & injuries! Chilli: The green ones are normally best Garam massala: Home made if possible, just grind up roughly equal amounts of cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and cardamom Fresh Corriander: I can’t say anymore than that Water: Any council pop will do unless you live in Coventry! (I apologise if you’ve heard that more than once before! (although I visited Coventry last week for the first time and it was nowhere near as bad as I was lead to believe)) Mango powder: Powder derived from mangoes Onions: Red or white will do, let’s not be silly about this Potatoes: Normal white will do unless you want to be flash The Method Heat a saucepan with oil or turn your fryer on. Peel and chop the onions into thin strips. Do the same with the potatoes once the paste is made, cutting the potatoes into thin discs. Next we make a batter to coat the vegetables. Skin and crush some garlic into a mixing bowl. Mix this with the ginger paste and finely chopped chillies. Add the gram flour and add water mixing all the while till you have made a smooth batter. Add some salt, garam massala and chopped coriander. Add the vegetables and form these into little parcels before dropping into the oil. Fry, turning once until they are crisp and then set aside on some kitchen towel to dry. Serve on a bed of lettuce and red cabbage with a light lemon dressing and sprinkle the Pakoras with mango powder. Alternatively ‘Three’ will now be serving afternoon ‘Chai’ from two o’clock each day!

Horse Fly

With the dry warm summer we are experiencing there seems to be lots more insects around that are biting, here is the NHS guide to coping and preventing.... Bugs that bite or sting include wasps, hornets, bees, horseflies, ticks, mosquitoes, fleas, bedbugs, spiders and midges. Symptoms of insect bites and stings Insect bites and stings will usually cause a red, swollen lump to develop on the skin. This may be painful and in some cases can be very itchy. The symptoms will normally improve within a few hours or days, although sometimes they can last a little longer. Some people have a mild allergic reaction and a larger area of skin around the bite or sting becomes swollen, red and painful. This should pass within a week. Occasionally, a severe allergic reaction can occur, causing symptoms such as breathing difficulties, dizziness and a swollen face or mouth. This requires immediate medical treatment.

Tick

What to do if you've been bitten or stung To treat an insect bite or sting: Remove the sting or tick if it's still in the skin. Wash the affected area with soap and water. Apply a cold compress (such as a flannel or cloth cooled with cold water) or an ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes. Raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling. Avoid scratching the area, to reduce the risk of infection. Avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they're unlikely to help. The pain, swelling and itchiness can sometimes last a few days. Ask your pharmacist about over-thecounter treatments that can help, such as painkillers, creams for itching and antihistamines. When to get medical advice Contact your GP or call NHS 111 for advice if: You're worried about a bite or sting Your symptoms don't start to improve within a few days or are getting worse You've been stung or bitten in Your mouth or throat, or near Your eyes a large area (around 10cm or Hornet

more) around the bite becomes red and swollen You have symptoms of a wound infection, such as pus or increasing pain, swelling or redness You have symptoms of a more widespread infection, such as a fever, swollen glands and other flu-like symptoms When to get emergency medical help Dial 999 for an ambulance immediately if you or someone else has symptoms of a severe reaction, such as: Wheezing or difficulty breathing A swollen face, mouth or throat Nausea or vomiting A fast heart rate Dizziness or feeling faint Midge Difficulty swallowing Loss of consciousness Emergency treatment in hospital is needed in these cases. Prevent insect bites and stings There are some simple precautions you can take to reduce your risk of being bitten or stung by insects. For example, you should: Remain calm and move away slowly if you encounter wasps, hornets or bees – don't wave your arms around or swat at them. Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeves and trousers. Wear shoes when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to exposed skin – repellents that contain 50% DEET (diethyltoluamide) are most effective. Avoid using products with strong perfumes, such as soaps, shampoos and deodorants – these can attract insects. Be careful around flowering plants, rubbish, compost, stagnant water, and in outdoor areas where food is served.
