Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the August Edition of The Rugby Register As promised in last months letter, below is a picture of Catherine in her fabulous fascinator enjoying Ascot, I think she was a bit luckier than me on the horses and the weather was slightly better for her than the 33 degree heat I had just 2 days before. So thats it, schools out for summer. Big changes in our house as my youngest finished at Infant School and my oldest finished at Junior School. Middle one moves into year 6 so only another year for him and he’ll be in high school too. It’s sad to think my time at infant school has come to an end, mind you I have been going there for 8 years, but still it will be odd walking past every morning on my way to Juniors. The children all seem to adapt and change well, I think its sometimes us parents that find it hard! So 2 new uniforms bought, I just need to wash, iron and label them (ooh the tedium of labelling everything - can’t wait!) and then shoe shopping at the end of the holidays. If you are looking to entertain your children through the holidays there are a number of FREE activities happening courtesy of Rugby Borough Council, most of which are on a page towards the back of the magazine. It can be costly entertaining them for 6 weeks so bravo and well done to RBC for putting on some great, free activities. We will

certainly be going along to some of them. Myself and Catherine have signed up to do the Shine Walk, its walking the same route as the London Marathon but through the night. It’s on the 23rd Anne Septemeber and training is in full swing. We are currently at 7.5 miles and increasing it week on week. We are walking to support a dear friend of ours who lives with Incurable Cancer and is an absolute inspiration for tackling this gruelling walk. There is now a group of about 15 of us all walking it with her and her fiance. If anyone would like to sponsor our efforts the links are below or we have a paper sponsor form in the Office that we can write it on. Every penny goes to Cancer Research and would be greatly welcomed. Thank you. https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/ annes-fundraising-page-709 https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/ catherines-fundraising-page-2900 Have a great August everyone,

Anne xx

Established since 1983

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Dress well this summer... We have been having some glorious sunshine recently and it’s so lovely to have more than ‘just one day of good summer weather’ Summer is about having fun, it’s a perfect time to embrace your natural beauty and test out great new trends. Yet so many of us find dressing for summer a bit of a ‘challenge’ A few little ‘mistakes’ can be spotted during the summer months: •

All kinds of underwear clearly visible through clothes

•

T- shirts that are too tight and look unflattering

•

Uncovered bellies

•

Shorts that were worn in an unflattering way

•

The strangest combinations of colours & patterns

•

Too many ‘too comfortable sandals’ that have no style at all

So why is dressing well more difficult in summer? Perhaps, you have less summer clothes than winter ones or there is less reason to wear more layers. Maybe you want to feel comfortable and cool first and style comes in second place. Or you are simply on your holidays and in summer mode not caring too much about your appearance. Looking elegant can be virtually effortless if you know how to grab a hold of your inner summer glow. Here are a few of my tips for dressing well this summer: • It’s very important to dress for your body shape, so feel free to refer to my January 2017 article about different body types (www.rugbyregister.co.uk) • Keep it simple. You really don’t need much to be elegant. Just a simple summer dress will make you look stunning. Look for light fabrics in bright colour and patterns, add extra splash and detail with raffles and embroidery. • Make sure your clothes fit properly. Very important in the summer, since you can’t cover up an ill fitting t-shirt with another layer, for example. • Select your undergarments carefully. It really is not very stylish to show your underwear. During the summer days we tend to wear lighter colours so make sure you select fabrics that are not too thin. Your other option will be to go for a skin-tone colour or invisible underwear underneath. Try to find a bra that matches the shape of your top and that it fits well. • The favourite shoe choice for the summer is usually sandals. There are so many different styles out there now so it really isn’t necessary to go for really boring ones. • Keep jewellery to a minimum. Gold is a great summer colour because it catches sunlight but use it sparingly. Natural textures such as wool and suede are great choices.

Most importantly, wear clothes you feel good in. Summer is all about letting loose and enjoying yourself. Let your clothing reflect that!

Recipes From Three Bistro Ki

B e a n C u rr y e y dn

This month it is the big one, my favourite meal of all time. The meal I usually make in a vat and eat for breakfast lunch and dinner till it’s gone. This will also furnish you with the base used for most Indian food. Indians love value for money so here I will give you one recipe that will give you over 50 dishes! I saw one restaurant in France stretch this base to 54 dishes. The philosophy behind the base is to enhance and bring out the flavour of whatever you are cooking which is why I do not understand curry powder which makes every dish taste of, well…curry powder. This curry is a favourite authentic dish in India. When someone makes it in a village everyone comes round for dinner as it involves a long winded process. Here in England in a post industrial world that has seen the creation of factories which produce cans of cooked Kidney beans it is a much easier affair. Not that you’ll be doing this, but in case you did want to make it the Indian way, you’ll need to soak the beans for a day in water then cook them in a pressure cooker with salt bearing in mind that they will be poisonous if you don’t cook them properly, and by poisonous I mean really poisonous so be warned.

The ingredients: 2 cans of kidney beans: Don’t use the cheapest or how are you going to make the best? Use salted beans or you’ll have to over salt later on Garlic, ginger & green chilli: Yet another appearance by the famous trio. Two onions: Medium sized and red although white will be fine One can of tinned tomato: See the above notes for kidney beans 2 heaped teaspoons of coriander powder: A dark brown powder used more as a thickener than flavouring Quarter of a tea spoon of garam massala: I make my own mix of cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Try to make your own as shop bought packets are heavily loaded with cumin as it is the cheapest spice Fresh coriander: I can’t say any more than that! Natural yogurt The Method: Cut the onions into long thin strips or dice depending on how much you like to see the onions in the final dish. I normally dice them. Fry these till translucent. Then spoon the onions to one side of the pan and add finely chopped garlic and ginger. Fry till it almost goes brown then combine with the onions. I add a little salt to this mix as it seems to add more flavour to the finished dish. When these are all browned add the tinned tomatoes, chopped chilli, a quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric and the coriander powder with a teaspoon of salt. This is the base which can be used for any number of curries. Cook the base down on a high heat to further concentrate before adding the kidney beans. Bring to the boil and then simmer for approximately 45 minutes to an hour and a half and add the garam massala when the beans are almost done. Add too early and it will over power the taste. Cook the beans till they are very soft and the sauce has thickened and merged with the beans. Add the fresh coriander. Cook some rice and spoon on the beans with a very healthy amount of natural yogurt and garnish with fresh coriander. To eat, stir till they are fully mixed together and eat for dinner or like me, for breakfast lunch and dinner! If this all sounds long winded then try it at the ‘three’ Friday night supper club. This month it may have been short on laughs but long on substance! Vick & Lisa Three Bistro 3 Clifton Road Rugby 01788 544782

Tips when going on Holiday • • • • • •

Move any patio pots to a shady area of the garden and water well. Give them a drop of plant food too. Or better still ask a friendly neighbour to drop in from time to time with a watering can. Dead head annual plants and roses. By the time you come back they will be in full flower again. Cut the lawn before you go. You will not believe how fast grass can grow if it is warm and wet while you are away. Now is the time to plan for Christmas flowering bulbs such as Hyacinths and Narcissus. Hyacinths planted early this month will be in full bloom on your Christmas table. Prune hardy lavenders to keep them compact. Take away the complete flower stem and a couple of centimetres of this year’s growth. Finish pruning evergreen and deciduous hedges. The birds will have flown the nest so it is safe to cut back hedges.

Clean your patio, terrace, or other garden surfaces so that any moss and algae is cleared off. You do not want to leave this there for the winter as it can get really slippery when wet.

Deadheading the flowers

Deadheading is the term used for the removal of flowers from plants when they are fading or dead. This is an important task which will help your garden looking at its best and encourage plants to keep blooming. Whether in beds and border, containers or hanging baskets. Regular deadheading directs energy into stronger growth and more flowers. Plants to deadhead: argyranthemums, cherry pie, pansies, polyanthus and petunias, geraniums (Pelargonium), roses. Among the most important shrubs to deadhead are rhododendron (and azaleas), camellias, lilacs and tree peonies.

Improve your health quickly.... The question I am most often asked is, “What can I do to improve my health quickly.” As you will know by now, my work is my passion and I am totally committed to motivating and encouraging people to embrace a healthier lifestyle. I have given the question a great deal of thought. Without a doubt I feel exercise is the major key to good health. I always encourage people to exercise because I truly believe that we cannot have the energy, health and vitality we want without exercising our bodies. We were born to move and if you think about how our lives have changed even in the last 30 years then you will realise that many people do not get enough exercise. Our grandparents used to walk nearly everywhere; they also carried their shopping and house work was much more of a chore, often hard physical work. Yes we do need to “move that body”. Aerobic activity of at least thirty minutes five days a week will greatly improve the efficiency of the heart as a pump, tone the entire arterial system, reduce bad cholesterol, reduce the chance of abnormal blood clotting and help balance the activity of the autonomic nervous system. People who do not exercise regularly more than double their risk of heart disease and also many other illnesses. Exercise boosts energy levels and makes you feel good and there are many other health benefits. Exercise: •

Lowers blood sugar levels and promotes insulin efficiency – fatigue is a symptom of blood sugar imbalance.

•

Helps keep bowels working efficiently to eliminate waste products your body does not need and which can make you feel sluggish because of the toxicity building up in your body.

•

Boosts immunity which means you are less likely to get ill - there are always colds and viruses about even in the summer.

•

Burns calories and builds muscles. The more your muscles build up the speedier your metabolism becomes. Lean muscle is more effective at burning fuel so if you build lean muscles you burn more calories and you will lose weight if needed.

•

Encourages a good night’s sleep – there is no doubt that if you get outside and exercise then you will improve your chances of getting the sleep you need.

•

Improves your sex life – not only will you feel healthier when you exercise regularly but as you become more toned and perhaps lose a few pounds you will gain more confidence, feel less exhausted in the evening and increase your libido.

•

Boosts mood through the release of brain chemicals called endorphins. It is true that when we exercise it has a very positive affect on our mood and believe me the more you exercise the more addicted you will become.

•

Relaxes the body. Exercise is a wonderful way to relax and forget the stresses of everyday life. We live in a stressful world and it is important to find ways of alleviating everyday stress which is responsible for many illnesses.

It is good to go to the gym; I go myself at least once each week. However, your body is the best piece of gym equipment you own. Walking will give you leaner legs, a trimmer waist and if you use your arms will also improve your pectoral muscles. Many effective exercises can be performed using your own body weight so it is not always necessary to go to a gym. Simply walking or jogging or dancing or playing with your children, all these activities will benefit your overall health. I go jogging which I find is a really quick way of improving my fitness. In a short time I will be taking part O in “Race for Life”. Up and down the country O women are coming together to participate hi in these events which raise funds for Cancer als Research UK. Thousands of women participate of th in these inspiring events so well done anyone The p who is taking part; the training involved can of m e really improve your overall fitness and the ligam e achievement you feel upon completing the race mech is wonderful. an

Care homes that ensure every day is well lived in Rugby Ensuring every day is well lived is a philosophy at the heart of all WCS Care homes – and at Dewar Close, Drovers House, and Westlands in Rugby, it’s no different. Run by the Warwickshire-based charity, the only provider in the country to have six homes recognised as ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (or half of the group’s homes), the homes provide high quality care for older people and people with dementia. Dewar Close, Drovers House, and Westlands each have their own personalities but the common theme is that the homes are designed to encourage residents to keep doing the things they’ve always done – and have the chance to try new experiences. Whether it’s baking a cake with family and friends in the kitchen, looking after the plants in the garden, or simply putting your feet up with your favourite tipple, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy every aspect of life in a WCS home the way you want to. Dewar Close and Westlands both offer comfortable, homely living in three separate households, each with a spacious lounge, dining area, and kitchenette, where residents can make their own snacks and drinks if they want to (or staff are on hand if they don’t). At Drovers House, there are six households, each with their own communal open-plan lounge, dining area and kitchen, and everyone has their own ensuite room, personalised front door, and windows overlooking the neighbourhood, so people can watch the world go by. There’s a real community feel in every WCS Care home – not just within the homes themselves but also in the wider area, where residents are encouraged to continue to actively be an important part of their local area. Whether it’s attending regular faith services in the homes or nearby, supporting the local economy by visiting the town’s regular markets, or welcoming school children to their home for a visit; it’s creating memories that people cherish. There are plenty of opportunities to visit local attractions such as shops, museums, parks, and pubs through WCS Care’s Out and About service, in association with Oomph! For those who enjoy being active, there’s a full and varied activities and exercise programme that also promotes the benefits of spending time outdoors. At Drovers House, there’s even a side-by-side bike-for-two that runs on a specially designed cycle track in the garden. In all WCS Care homes, there’s an abundance of secure outside space including beautiful gardens where you’ll often find scented plants, water features, and outdoor furniture that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Highest quality, specialist care around the clock is the norm at every WCS Care home, accompanied by compassionate people who together help residents create a welcoming environment to share fun, laughter, and memories. And with features like a hair salon (Dewar Close, Drovers House and Westlands), ‘A Cup Above’ café (Drovers House and Westlands), mini-mart and table tennis (Drovers House), there’s always a good excuse to meet for a chat. Christine Asbury, WCS Care’s Chief Executive, said: ‘Our homes will challenge many people’s ideas about what a care home is and the quality of life people can expect. ‘We believe in creating vibrant, bustling environments led by the people who live there – it’s about independent living and ensuring that residents continue to do what they’ve always done, as well as providing new opportunities they hadn’t yet considered.’ Rooms are ready to view at Dewar Close on Beech Drive, Drovers House on Drover Close, and Westlands on Oliver Street now. Pop in to one of our homes for a chat and a coffee, or visit our website at: www.wcs-care.co.uk for more information. The summer youth project, for those aged 10-21, put together this show in just two weeks under the guidance of a professional director and choreographer along with a group of our usual rugby theatre volunteers.
