Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the April Edition.... Well here we are in April already and I’m pleased to report that we are back to our usual monthly magazine going forward. Its amazing to hear of so many new businesses popping up in Rugby. Its great that people are being wonderfully brave and taking the plunge, I wish them all the very best of luck. We have a number of new advertisers this month, some of which are new businesses and some established businesses trying new ways of advertising and we are thrilled they have all joined us. We work hard to bring you as much as we can that’s local, whether that be businesses, tradespeople, events, news, services etc as we are passionate about our wonderful town and all it has to offer. By shopping and trading local you are supporting your local economy and many many local families too for which I know they are very grateful.

sadly. I’m currently waiting for CT scan results to see if any light can be shed on why its not healing as it should :-( I hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend and Easter holidays if you have school age children/grandchildren. Fingers crossed for some nice ‘get out in the garden weather’.

Please do mention us when you get in touch with anyone/anything you have seen here in the magazine as that too helps the businesses advertising know what’s working for them and it also helps another small local business - mine, and I’m definitely grateful as I love what I do. I was going to update you on my accident/progress but since I last wrote there has been no progress

besity O e h t n o s Thought

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert Shares her thoughts on the Obesity Crisis One of the worrying consequences of this horrible year has been that many of us have gained lots of excess weight because, let us be honest, a lot of time has been focussed on food, and disastrously for our health, alcohol. I am sure many of you will have received those funny videos of women drinking either early in the morning or consuming vast amount of wine from enormous glasses. Yes, we have all laughed at these but the dangers to our health must not be ignored and not taking care of our health is now becoming a major issue. Being overweight and obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) definition of overweight and obesity is when your BMI is greater than or equal to 25 and obesity greater than or equal to 30. If you want to work out your BMI let me know and I will send you the required equation! Mathematics was never my strong point. Far more important is that you acknowledge and accept that you need to make some major changes for your health’s sake, and you do not need to know your BMI to know you need to reduce weight. The statistics are really alarming according to the WHO worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. Most of the world lives in countries where being overweight or obese kills more people than those who are underweight. But the statistic that really concerns me the most is that in 2019 38.2 million children under 5 were overweight or obese. What are we doing to our children? When I was at school and yes it was a little while ago now, I do not remember a single overweight child. We are risking the health of a whole generation to the following diseases directly associated with being overweight or obese: • Cardiovascular diseases • Diabetes • Joint pain because they are under stress from all the weight you are carrying in fact all your internal organs are also under stress • Osteoarthritis – disabling degenerative diseases of the joints • Some cancers including – breast, ovarian, colon, liver, prostate, and kidney The correlation for death from Covid 19 with being overweight or obese is now certain and this must not be ignored as we are probably going to live with some strain of this virus for many years to come. It is time now to take control of your health and wellbeing. It is time to take responsibility for your own health and that of your children and I believe we all have a social

responsibility to do this too because ultimately our wonderful NHS will not be able to cope. I am sorry if this all sounds a bit harsh but sometimes the hard truth is needed. I know of course that obesity is a sensitive issue because no one chooses to be fat it takes time and lots of the wrong type of food. Obesity can certainly be an emotional problem. People often eat for comfort, but I can assure you that there is nothing that will satisfy you in any fridge, freezer, or biscuit tin. It is far more important to deal with the emotional issues underlying your poor relationship with food. Many people in the world are literally addicted to food and part of this addiction is because much of the food eaten today is highly processed and contains high levels of salt, sugar, and oil, which makes them taste good and releases dopamine which is one of the feel-good hormones so of course you are hooked on these foods that are responsible for you being overweight and obese. What is the solution – this is not going to be easy to hear but its really up to you. You must change your lifestyle and wean yourself off processed foods as quickly as you can because I sincerely believe these foods are killing you. Step 1 From now start noticing what you are eating think before you eat anything at all - is this nourishing me or is this doing me harm? Step 2 Acknowledge where you are now and where you need to be for your health. There is no quick fix this may take one year but I promise the rewards are tremendous. Step 3 Get started stop eating junk and processed foods – this will be hard because they taste so good, and you are addicted to them. It will take time to re-educate your taste buds and your body. But it will be worth it I promise you. Remember to keep smiling and keep safe. Live with joy and health. Elizabeth Beetham www.powerforhealth.com healing@powerforhealth.com Tel: 07773 790736

How to decorate with a wall mural Wall murals are rapidly becoming a popular and effective alternative to wallpaper when revamping a space. A single image or scene stretched across a length of wall rather than a repeated pattern can easily be mistaken for a show-stopping piece of artwork. Look on these fabulous papers as an investment – a way to bring striking art into your home at an affordable price.

Harlequin Quintessence £196 per panel (140cm wide, 300cm drop) Ideal for a stairwell or corridor end.

Magnolia Frieze

Where to place a mural wallpaper?

by Osborne & Little £218 per roll (roll contains 3 panels, each 70cm wide, 300cm drop).

Mural designs come in a variety of formats and can be used in different spaces. If you have a long wall, bare of furniture use a design positioned at the bottom of the wall to fill the void whist keeping the sense of space and openness.

Miyako Scene by Designers Guild £195 per roll (roll contains 2 panels, each 70cm wide, 300cm drop) two scenes are available and can be combined to great effect).

Trailing Orchid by Osborne & Little £218 per roll (roll contains 3 panels, each 70cm wide, 300cm drop). Use this brilliant design from Osborne & Little in a smaller space – the top down design works around furniture so won’t be obscured. It would make a great backdrop above a headboard in a bedroom or a fantastic feature wall in a conservatory.

This spring, be bold, be brave! Investing in a wall mural can transform a bland space quickly and easily and won’t break the bank. Book an appointment to visit us from 12th April and browse our extensive selection of wall murals and wallpapers. Visit our website – www.curtainsbydesignonline.com/book or call us on 01788 543 668. SEASONAL RECIPES This Persian Lamb Stew couldn’t be any easy to prepare, packed with flavour and for those counting calories its under 500.

S te w

Ingredients oil for frying onions 2, chopped red chilli 1, seeded and diced garlic 2 cloves, crushed lamb leg steaks 2 (about 450g), fat trimmed and cut into chunks ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp cardamom 3 pods, bashed saffron a pinch or ½ tsp turmeric chicken stock 400ml tomato purée 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses 1 tbsp chickpeas 400g tin, rinsed and drained mint or coriander a small bunch, chopped pomegranate seeds 4 tbsp cucumber ½, seeded and sliced

Heat 1 tsp oil in a casserole, and fry the onions with a pinch of salt for 5 minutes until soft. Add the chilli and garlic for a minute, then add the lamb and cook for 5 minutes until brown. Stir in the spices, fry for a minute, then add the stock, purée and molasses. Cover with a lid, and cook for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Ingredients 2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest 1 cup fresh lemon juice 150g of sugar plus 1–2 tablespoons 6 large eggs Pinch of kosher salt 225g chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces 2 cups mixed berries

it h dw

This very lemony curd is made with whole eggs instead of just the yolks, which gives it an extra-light texture.

Add the chickpeas, season and cook for another 30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Scatter some herbs and pomegranate seeds over the lamb and serve with the remaining pomegranate tossed with the cucumber.

Bring lemon zest, lemon juice, and 50g sugar to a bare simmer in a large heavy saucepan over medium heat, whisking to dissolve sugar, then remove from heat. Whisk eggs, salt, and 100g sugar in a large bowl until light and thick, about 1 minute. Whisking constantly, gradually pour about one-quarter of hot lemon mixture into egg mixture, then, whisking constantly, incorporate egg mixture into remaining lemon mixture in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until lemon curd is opaque and thick enough to hold the marks of the whisk, about 2 minutes. Scrape lemon curd into a blender. With motor on medium speed, add butter a piece at a time, waiting until each piece is fully incorporated before adding the next, until the butter is emulsified and curd is light and thick. Transfer lemon curd to a large nonreactive bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pressing directly against surface so a skin doesn’t form. Chill until cold, at least 2 hours. Toss berries and remaining 1–2 Tbsp. sugar in another large bowl. Let sit until some juices have accumulated, 25–30 minutes. Spoon curd into bowls and top with berries and their juices.

APRIL GARDENING TASKS April brings with it longer days and occasionally mild, sunny weather. The colder chill of winter has passed, and spring is in full swing. It’s time to enjoy that gentle sunshine and make those lawns more respectable. Preparation to add colour and plants back into the garden ready for those Summer months.

Lawn Care Tips After a winter of neglect, your lawn will benefit from a bit of TLC now. • • • •

• • •

Scarify to remove dead matter Aerate for strong growth and waterwise gardening Spot treat any weeds Control moss - If moss is a major problem in your lawn, now is a good time to apply Ferrous (Iron) Sulphate to your lawn. Scarify first to get rid of most of the moss, and then sprinkle on the Iron Sulphate. Within a few days any remaining moss will have died. A bonus feature of Iron Sulphate is that it helps create a lovely deep green colour in your lawn. Feed your lawn - it is the most important time to feed the lawn in April. Plants are growing fast at this time of year and they need nourishment. Without essential nutrients, lawn grasses become thin, pale and vulnerable to common lawn diseases. Mowing in April - this is better done little and often rather than letting the grass become leggy. There is still time to overseed any bare areas. Lay new turf

Time to Plant Dahlia Tubers Dahlia tubers are now ready to plant. Discard any tubers that look diseased or damaged. Dig a planting hole, making sure it isn’t too deep. The shoots are still delicate, and you don’t want to damage them. Gently pour coarse sand over the tubers; this prevents them from rotting and it’s also a great slug repellent. Backfill with soil and add a ring of sand to mark the planting spot. It’s also another useful means of combating those pesky slugs and snails. Write labels for each dahlia next to each plant; a foolproof way to remember what you’ve planted in a few months’ time.
