Flood devastates local enterprise..... Works 4 Me is a small group who recycle and update old furniture, make a variety of craft items and handmade goods to sell in their shop on High Street in the town centre, providing valuable work experience for adults with learning differences. Members have the chance to mix with the public in integrated workshops, exploring a wide range of art activities. They work with professional artists and trained carers who have many years experience in working with a wide range of special needs. Sadly, in March there was a flood at the shop, a pipe on one of the upper floors burst and the whole building has been declared unsafe after water was pouring through the shop for 2 days. Kate from Works 4 Me put out a message to the community and so far the response with offers of help have been superb but to get themselves back on their feet and trading again they need donations. A local business has offered temporary accommodation in Regent Street which is wonderful and testament to how Rugby people pull together in a crisis. A crowdfunding page has been set up and any donations would be welcomed, no matter how small. The daycare centre desperately want to get back on their feet and are working hard to acheive just that. With all the stock, projects and materials ruined in the flood, they sadly have to start from scratch. If you think you may be able to help in anyway contact Works 4 Me on the details below. The crowdfunding donation page is:

Big enough to cope, small enough to care

All installations carried out by RSI carry a workmanship guarantee AND a manufacturer’s guarantee Roger and his family have been running the company since 1983 which means knowledge has been passed through three generations allowing RSI to build the reputation it has today. We specialise in fascias, guttering and EPDM roofing but also offer many other services which are always fitted to the highest professional standard, well beyond most of our competitors. Our quotations are only ever provided by Roger or his sons: Craig or Marcus. OUR QUOTATION PROCESS • Contact us through our website, telephone or by email to arrange a convenient time and date. • During our free quote we explain what is involved in our installation, there are no pressure sales and our quotes only take a short time to carry out. • NO DEPOSIT- payment is on completion of installation. Please be wary of companies that ask for a deposit or upfront payment. • After our genuine survey we will send a written quotation in the post or via email. We give a firm quote and do not start at an inflated price so there is no need to barter. • Once the quotation is sent in writing we leave the decision entirely up to you. There are no follow up calls.

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Easter FUN!

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this adorable Easter Bunny Rice Krispies Treat!

Ingredients: • • • • • • •

6 cups Rice Krispies 3 Tablespoons Butter 10 oz Marshmallows White chocolate buttons Food Coloring Black Icing Bunny Cookie Cutters

Instructions: In a large saucepan melt the butter over med-low heat. Slowly add your marshmallows and stir until melted. Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies to your melted marshmallow mix and stir until the cereal is coated. Press the Rice Krispies into a buttered cookie sheet or use baking parchment. Cut your bunny shapes out with a buttered cookie cutter. Use all the Rice Krispies area to cut out your Easter Bunnies. Melt your white chocolate according to package instructions. Once you have the desired consistency, spoon your chocolate onto the bunnies and spread evenly. Use food coloring if desired to color the bunnies! Dye some of the chocolate light pink for the bunny ears and nose. Then pipe on with a piping bag or use a small freezer bag with the tip cut off. Now draw on the mouth and eyes with the black icing. Enjoy!

Wibbly Wobbly Bunny!

These little bunnies will make a great decoration on your Easter table. You could even hide them around the house or in the backyard in an Easter egg hunt. What you need: • Coloured paper of your choice • scissors • glue • googly eyes or markers Cut two strips of paper (we made them about 1.5 inch wide). Roll each stip into the roll and add glue to form a tube (the one for the head a little bit narrower than the body one). Once that is dry glue the rolls together (we used 2 paper clips to hold the rolls together while the glue dried, you could also use pegs). Cut two ears and two inner parts of the ears (or draw them with the marker). Cut the bottom part – a base with two bunny legs. Glue the base onto the bottom part of the body roll. Let it dry. Stick the ears on the head part. Add googly eyes and draw facial details. Hop, hop!

Seven Steps to Good Health Spring is here at last. What a horribly long grey winter we have had this year and how delightful it is to see the daffodils in all their glory. I regret to report I have been ill (very embarrassing when you are in the health business)! After breaking my right arm on 5th February, I also succumbed to two nasty infections. I am ashamed to say it made me realise just how smug I was about my good health and how much I took it for granted. Good health is so precious and indeed can be a fragile thing, so we need to take care of our miraculous bodies. Let us all take some positive steps to improve our health. Step 1. Make the decision to change your life and improve your health. The mind is far more powerful than the body so the first step is to control your mind and take that step toward a healthier life. Making up your mind that you are in control and that you want and need to make changes is essential to success. Take that first step today toward being healthier, fitter and having the vitality you deserve. Step 2. Simple changes will make a big difference No more junk and processed food that makes us feel horrid, that clogs the arteries and makes you fat. I want you to think about everything that goes in your mouth. Try eliminating alcohol for seven days – alcohol is a poison to the body and dulls our senses. Tap into the wisdom of your mind, body and soul. Listen to your body. Step 3. Understand what you should be eating and what you should avoid As stated before processed foods are bad for our health, we need fresh food which provides us with the nutrients we need to support the body. Please take up this challenge - ditch all processed foods for 30 days and feel the benefits to your health and vitality. We are addicted to refined sugar which is the most degenerative substance we put into our bodies. Controlling your sugar intake will improve your health enormously. Step 4. – What should you be drinking It is important that we drink plenty of water so get into the habit of always having water in your car for your journey and at your desk in the office; never go long periods without drinking water. If you start to feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. It is thought that 75% of the western world is chronically dehydrated and that in most people, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Dehydration is responsible for slowing metabolism, poor digestion, reduced concentration and fatigue. Your urine should be straw coloured with no strong odour. Step 5. The importance and benefits of exercise

h This is key for many reasons: exercise lowers blood sugar levels, helps keeps bowels working efficiently, boosts immunity, burns calories, encourages a good night’s sleep and boosts mood. Exercise gives you energy al so “move that body”! of

The of m Individuals differ greatly in their requirement for sleep but most of us would benefit from getting to bed earlier ligam occasionally at least. Many people do not get the sleep they need and this can affect their health. To improve mech a your chances of a good night’s rest never go to bed hungry or on a full stomach and do not drink caffeinated ne drinks late at night. Try a warm milky drink instead or a chamomile tea which is calming. Try missing the latervou T news programmes you will be surprised how much easier it is to drop off without the worries of the world onhe prim mani your shoulders. p comp ula laint range Step 7. Getting balance in your life and learning to laugh and living with joy of m is We need balance in our lives so think about ways in which you can find time just for Step 6. The importance of having adequate sleep

you. Time to be relaxed and quiet even ten minutes twice a day will make you feel less stressed. Stress is a killer it is at the root of many diseases.

Make a change no matter how

Laugh more its good for your health and I am sure life is not meant to be taken too seriously!

Live with joy and health.

Leek, Potato & Carrot Soup

So they all rolled over and one fell out and the little one said rollover, so they all rolled over and one fell out and the little one said rollover….I don’t know why but it felt right to open like this and I have always wanted to open a feature with this catchy little song but maybe I am also just playing for time as this month’s ingredients list and method is possibly refreshingly short as this month we do a beautifully rustic and deeply satisfying soup. With all the weather, Brexiting and Russia, sometimes you just need a hug and nothing does that like soup. So often, in so many walks of life, the saying ‘keep it simple’ is imparted for good reason. At ‘three’, as I have said before, three really is the magic number. Building on the traditional Leek and soup we add carrot to the famous duo to create our own ‘Leek, carrot & potato soup’. Before I started making my own soup at ‘three’ I never enjoyed soup as until now, without sounding big headed, I had never really had one I liked as they are usually a bland affair. Now more and more I prefer to turn to soup more than any other meal when I am frantically trying to yoyo my way back to a weight where I can still fit into a medium t-shirt! The Ingredients Leek: It doesn’t have to be picked from the ‘green green hills of home’ within the hour but slightly fresh and Welsh will do. Potato: Any King Edward, George or Henry will do Carrot: I prefer orange but any colour will also do Vegetable stock: You don’t necessarily need to boil a stock for a week with all manor of vegetable like you would with a meat stock. A good vegetable stock cube will do and it will be a matter of trial and error till you find one you like as it really affects the quality of the final soup. I find the more ‘exotic’ stock cubes from the various Eastern European shops in Rugby work best. Garlic granules: I use these more and more just to add a very subtle background note as fresh garlic is normally too intrusive if you don’t want something to necessarily taste of garlic but just want a add a little more depth to a dish. The Method Get your sous chef to roughly slice the leeks at 1-2cm intervals and if you don’t have a sous chef like me then hire one! Next, half the carrots longways then split the halves into halves slicing thinly so you are left with half semi circles. I don’t skin the carrots as with most vegetables, most of the goodness is in the skin. With this is in my mind I also leave the skin on the potatoes when I cube them. Once all the veg are ready put some oil in a pan and fry the leeks adding a little bit of butter. Season the leeks and add some garlic granules. Don’t be afraid to pepper the leeks even though they are naturally peppery. Add the carrots and potatoes shortly afterwards and fry all the veg together. Add boiling water to the stock cube in a jug and dissolve. Once dissolved, add this to the vegetables and boil. Once this has boiled, simmer and season till the potatoes are soft. Serve with a little freshly cracked black pepper and chives. We serve our soups with generously buttered sourdough toast or home made sourdough croutons. We also serve superb squash, cumin & chilli soup which you really must come down and try!

Sunflowers - Get the children

in the garden to plant some sunflower seeds. Sunflowers are among the most joyous of flowers, They can be sown directly in the soil but you will need to do this mid-April when hopefully there will be no threat of frost. Make sure you place the seeds carefully in the ground and cover the seed with soil and water the newly planted seeds. Flowering should occur in August and it’s always a competition to see whose seeds grows into the tallest plant.

Lawn Care: I know it never ends! Rake out any dead moss with a scarifier and then fork over to improve drainage. Apply lawn fertiliser. Mow growing grass but keep the blades fairly high still. Dig out any perennial weeds. April is a great time for sowing new lawns and repairing bare patches.

s Hanging Baskets: Hanging baskets can be planted up during April and kept

in the warmth while the plants grow. Argyranthemum, Lysimachia (creeping jenny), Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’, Fuchsia, Pelargonium (geraniums), Lobelia, Viola (pansies), Petunia, Salvia and Nicotiana (tobacco plants) are great for summer hanging baskets. Choosing and arranging the plants When you begin to arrange the plants in the basket, it is usually easiest to start with one, central plant. Around this, position some trailing plants to cover the sides of the basket, particularly if it is made from wire. However, using a more decorative basket is best where it will be easily seen. Along with this selection, it is worth considering carefully the flowering plants. Choose colours that work well together and plants that flower reliably.

Strong year ahead at new Houlton development Work on Rugby’s newest community, Houlton, is forging ahead for 2018 with a calendar of key milestones set for the Urban&Civic site. The 1.5 mile link road, which will join Houlton and Rugby, is expected to be completed by next summer, with this major piece of infrastructure significantly cutting the journey time between the community and rail links, and supporting economic growth in the region. Housebuilding continues to remain a key priority for the site’s progression for the year ahead. Prospective home-buyers can now view show homes by developers Crest Nicholson and Davidsons Homes, as well as view Morris Homes’ development, The Beacons, from their on-site marketing suite. St Gabriel’s CofE Academy primary school, is preparing to welcome its first reception class, having already received applications for 22 local children ahead of this September’s intake. With 30 spaces available at the exceptional new primary school, parents can continue to apply for their child’s place throughout the year. Plans are also on course for the neighbourhood’s playground, due to open in spring, and will provide a focal point for young families joining the community this year. Following a hugely successful year of service, April will see Houlton’s eatery, The Tuning Fork, celebrate its first birthday at Houlton. The site is also expected to host a range of community events throughout the year, including Bright Brick’s LEGO™ activity, an Easter egg hunt, summer picnic, and a time capsule event to mark the birth of the primary school. The new neighbourhood of Houlton will see 6,200 homes built, as well as three primary schools and a secondary school, an eight-GP health centre, extensive walkways, cycleways and green spaces as well as commercial space and new business. The development will take some 15 years to deliver. Richard Coppell, Development Director for Urban&Civic said: “Last year was fantastic in terms of seeing the community of Houlton start to come to life, and we are excited about what 2018 has in store. Homes are available to buy now within the growing community, and we are looking forward to welcoming the families moving in this year.” To find out more about the Houlton development please

Films Coming to the Cinema during April

Love, Simon: Release Date: 6 April 2018 The Plot: Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeenyear old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love. Tully: Release Date: 20 April 2018 The Plot: A new comedy from Academy Award-nominated director Jason Reitman (“‘Up in the Air’) and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (‘Juno’). Marlo (Academy Award

winner Charlize Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Mark Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis).
