Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the April Edition of The Rugby Register I am delighted and excited to bring to you the newly merged and bumper edition of the Rugb Register. No more North & Villages and South & Central editions, just 1 bigger , better edition going out to an increased audience. If you are receiving this magazine through your letterbox for the first time - welcome, I hope you enjoy reading through the magazine and seeing all the wonderful things our fabulous town has to offer. There is so much happening in Rugby at the minute, it’s a challenge keeping up; from new retailers opening both in and out of town, to the first sales home opening it’s door in Houlton (the Radio mast site) and in case you didn’t read it, Rugby was recently voted the 7th best place to live in the UK - how good is that? I’m sure that will bring in visitors who are curious to see what we have to offer. I think sometimes people are negative about our town and it often takes an outsider to come along and tell us how great things are for us to apprecaite what we have.

Recipes From Three Bistro Welcome to the second of what I hope will be more than a mere pair of recipes!

At 11, when my mother asked me if I wanted to learn how to cook, I made the schoolboy error of telling her ‘it was a woman’s job’. For my mother, a one woman renegade against the system, maverick and militant feminist, this was blasphemy and she rephrased her question to an order. In no uncertain terms she informed me that if I wanted to eat in her house again, I’d be doing the cooking. I then ‘willingly’ learnt to cook all her recipes and little did I know then that that would be one of the most important things I would learn. One of my mother’s favourite recipes are the lamb burgers I make today which are really just flattened seekh kebabs. I was never that good with skewers so this stops my left hand being used as a pin cushion. Serve these with raita, pitta bread or Fajitas and salad.

The Ingredients Garlic & Ginger: Succulent and true ginger and good mid to large garlic cloves or you’ll be peeling them longer than you should. Onion: A large one that really makes you cry when you chop it, unless you are chopping it under water (not recommended) or wearing swimming goggles. Green chilli: Ideally the thin variety available at most Indian/foreign (!) shops. Fresh coriander: The greener the better. An egg: Ideally a free range egg where the hen got to listen to Bach, but this won’t make too much difference to the dish, just your conscience. Lamb mince: You don’t need to know the name of the shepherd but a good mince may contain less badness. Garam masala: A blend of 5 spices which is available from most supermarkets, especially the ‘ethnic’ ones. However if you like to keep it real then blend together black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom and cloves. Other variations may include nutmeg and toasting the seeds but I don’t normally bother with this. Cucumber: As fresh and crisp as possible. Nutmeg: Freshly ground. Tomato puree: There is little I can add to this. Yogurt: I usually like to use a Greek style yogurt or a natural yogurt a week or so past it’s sell by date as this gives it a good sour-ness for Indian dishes. Salad: Iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes and cucumber. The Method Firstly make the raita by skinning and very finely chopping the cucumber either yourself or get an Indonesian to do it as I’ve found they’re now better than the traditional Filipino help or failing that get a Ugandan called Zippy like I do! Add salt and a teaspoon of garam masala. Leave this aside for a while before adding the yogurt. Empty the mince into a mixing bowl. Finely chop the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli and add to the mix. Add a teaspoon of garam masala, a generous amount of chopped coriander, a teaspoon of tomato puree and grate roughly half a ball of nutmeg. Add the egg without the shell! Mix it all together. Wet your hands and form the mince into round, square or rabbit shaped burgers if you wish, the mince is in your hands. You can either choose to oven, grill or cook like a conventional burger in a griddle pan. If you oven them they can be set aside in the fridge till you want to serve them and the best way to warm them is to shallow fry them in water to replace any moisture lost through being oven baked. Once heated, serve with the raita, pitta and salad dressed with lemon and a drop or two of olive oil. I usually eat this with a little mango and coriander sauce you can buy in many Indian shops. This meal is best enjoyed with a cold Cobra beer which is coincidently a beer we serve!

Mock TuDoR PlankS- It’s not wood its better – the perfect solution for replacing wooden mock Tudor planks. Wooden Tudor planks are very high maintenance, and sometimes only last up to 1 year before seeing signs of deterioration. The new mock Tudor planks carry a 15 year guarantee and once fitted can be forgotten about. These boards are handmade reproductions created from high-quality mouldings of actual English Oak pieces. Each plank has the identical detail, warmth and visual appeal of actual wood. With its grained timber texture, knots and imperfections of centuries old oak and with the mock Tudor pegs the effect is so true to life it’s hard to tell that they are not real wood. Unlike any other product on the market, these planks have a coloured core providing unparalleled UV resistance.

CONCRETE GUTTERING/ FINLOCK GUTTERING Concrete gutters, also known as Finlock gutters were a cheap installation option on properties built in the 1950’s to 1970’s. The protruding half acts as the concrete gutter, whilst the section hidden within the house provides a counter balance. Cutting and removing concrete modernises your house by installing UPVC fascia boards and plastic guttering stops leakages and damp, but! It it is not the only option, look into re-lining if it is possible. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS MAIN PROBLEMS WITH CONCRETE/ TO GET RID OF LEAKING FINLOCK GUTTERING FINLOCK • Frequent movement and cracking of the 1-Re-Lining (using rubberbond joints EPDM with a 20 year guarantee) • Being only a few inches from the ceiling leaks 2-Complete removal and can cause considerable damage replacement with modern PVCu • Unlike normal gutters, repairs need to be gutter system carried out by specialist guttering companies

Spring into a new Pastime.... As the spring finally approaches, is it time to get out a little more? Did you ever learn bridge with family? Perhaps you played at home with friends? Or maybe in a golf or bowls club, or a church or social group? It’s a great game for exercise of those “little grey cells”. It’s also a chance to get out and meet likeminded people. There are lots of groups playing bridge in the area. Many groups play just for fun, others are more organised, and some are highly competitive clubs, vying for top spot amongst themselves or against other clubs in local, regional or national competitions. Perhaps you were a strong player but family and career has been absorbing you, but now you have a bit more time. You could find a group to help you recall those skills, and lead you into the modern game. The atmosphere is a vital part of the enjoyment. Some groups are very much social and the card play is an excuse to get together. Others take the play more seriously, play full duplicate movements and compete against each other and outside. There is plenty of top quality play around Rugby in a courteous and welcoming spirit. There are practice sessions full of laughter and fun. However serious the play, there is no excuse for bad manners and aggression at the table. If you found this in one group or club, just try another. Bridge is a very affordable pastime. Many groups are run by volunteers and are perhaps as little as a pound for a session. The money buys new cards when the old ones get grubby and perhaps some stationery. In more formal groups and clubs it’s between two pounds fifty and five pounds for a session. This money will pay for a nice venue; electronic scoring and web site results refreshments; and perhaps extra equipment or professional staff. Cattery Celebrates its 1st Birthday You may remember that we featured Arcadia Cattery last April as they opened their doors for the first time. A year on and I popped back to see Linda, Andy & Eleanor Harris to see how they were getting on... After a successful Spring & Summer season last year Linda & Andy went ahead with their planned expansion of the Cattery with another 7 family rooms and 2 double rooms. This takes the total rooms to 17 double rooms (up to 2 cats) and 7 Family rooms (up to 4 cats) . The expansion of the room really does make this spacious Cattery a wonderful place for your cat to stay, whether is your holiday or a house move, wedding, hospital visit or having the workmen in. You can be sure your cat/s will be pampered from whiskers to tails from Andy, Linda or Ellie. Their own cat Mr Darcy still patrols the cattery in his elegant style and seems to love having other cats around. Linda told me “This first year has gone really well. Sow Your Veg Patch The middle of April is the ideal time for filling the veg patch with crops you’ll be picking throughout summer and autumn. Hoe off any weeds and rake them up, then fork the soil over, sprinkle on general fertiliser, rake finely and you’re ready to sow. Things to sow now include carrots, lettuces, rocket, spring onions, spinach, Swiss chard, leeks and beetroots, along with annual herbs such as parsley and chervil.

Plant lily bulbs now in pots! If you want to get ahead with your summer lily display, start planting now! I’d always recommend planting in pots. You can simply move them around the patio or into gaps in your borders as they come into flower! Use a good, multi-purpose compost and halffill a container at least 30cm (12”) in diameter and is sufficient for 3 bulbs. Cover with more compost and water in. Once the plants begin to shoot, move them to a sunny position. Feed with a liquid plant feed each weekly from the beginning of summer. In active growth, water freely especially if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week. Keep lilies mulched so that their roots are cool. ... Apply a high-potassium liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks from early spring until 6 weeks after flowering. Keep moist in winter.

Make a Start on Hanging Baskets Plant up hanging baskets. Single species or foliage-rich baskets a bountiful mixture of fern varieties is particularly striking are ideal for spring. To sharpen the look, add in white violas and cyclamen. Stand the container in a bucket for support and fill to two-thirds with compost. Pack the plants together, water and leave to settle for a couple of days before hanging.

Women and their hormones.... We know that from puberty until menopause women’s hormones have a very powerful and often difficult affect on our lives. There is nothing as awful as when your logical brain is saying one thing and the emotional and physical body is saying another. Whether it’s the big ugly spot which is hard to conceal or the frayed nerves and the emotional roller coaster, hormonal changes can really be hell! Hormonal Imbalance and the associated PreMenstrual Tension (PMT) can be responsible for a whole range of problems including: acne, skin eruptions, anxiety, bloating. breast swelling and tenderness, cramps, depression, food cravings, fainting spells, fatigue, headaches, mood swings, outbursts of anger, insomnia, nervousness, joint pain and water retention. Don’t despair, there are things you can do. First let’s look at what we need to eliminate, particularly for the last two weeks of your cycle, as these exacerbate your symptoms: 1. Caffeine is a diuretic and also increases nervous tension in the body. Try herbal teas and water instead. 2. Chocolate – I know you are craving it but it will not help - sad but true! 3. Reduce salt intake – salt can increase water retention. 4. Processed foods – they contain too much salt, sugar and saturated fats. 5. Dairy – including cheese, milk, cream and ice-cream. To help improve your symptoms naturally you need to eat a varied diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-grain cereals and breads, beans, peas, lentils, nuts and seeds and lean protein particularly chicken, turkey and fish. Make these changes to actually improve your symptoms 1. Eat well do not skip meals. A poor diet will exacerbate PMT, particularly fluctuating blood sugar levels so eat small meals regularly. We crave food when we allow our blood sugar levels to drop. Make sure this does not happen. 2. Support your nervous system, by taking a good quality Vitamin B complex which can really help reduce the symptoms of bloating, cravings, tiredness and mood swings. 3. Lower your saturated fat intake and reduce. 4. Make sure you increase your intake of essential fats found in oily fish, linseeds, nuts and unsaturated cooking oils. These provide the Omegas which are required for the production of prostaglandins which are hormone like substances and help control the premenstrual cycle. Evening Primrose Oil can also make a big difference in reducing breast tenderness. 5. Boost your magnesium which is

important for nerves and provides energy. Magnesium rich foods are whole grains, nuts, pulses, seafood, lean meat, dairy products, bananas and green vegetables. Now let us take a quick look at the menopause. Firstly let me say that the menopause is not a disease but a natural biological transition; it is the time at which a woman stops ovulating and menstruation ceases, and she is no longer fertile. The changes that are happening in the body start many years before a woman stops ovulating, when the production of the hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone slows down. This is known as the perimenopausal stage and can start as early as 30; many women experience no symptoms but for others the feelings of anxiety, dry skin, fatigue, bloating, headaches, heart palpitations, hot flushes, insomnia, irritability, decreased libido, loss of concentration and more can be awful. Oestrogen is essential for reproduction but it also acts on many non reproductive organs and systems in the body. Cells in the vagina, bladder, breasts, skin, bones, arteries, heart, liver and brain all contain oestrogen receptors and need this hormone. Oestrogen keeps the skin smooth and moist and the body’s internal thermostat operating properly – hence when the levels drop sharply hot flushes are experienced. Recently I discovered a good remedy for hot flushes and that is sage. Make sage tea and sip it cold throughout the day. I advocate a natural approach to the menopause and encourage women to view this stage in their lives as liberating and exciting. It is important to focus on the positive aspects rather than feeling that this is a disease. Coenzyme Q10 can be beneficial as it supports the immune system, o reduces fatigue, supports the adrenal glands lig and can improve overall physical and mental me processes.
