Well what a scorcher of a summer we’re having! I still can’t decide how I feel about it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about it being too hot, we don’t get hot weather enough for us to be complaining, but it was a bit of a shock to the system wasn’t it? I’ve spent the school holidays juggling work & being with the children and have managed to see family, friends and even 3 trips to London to see musicals and a spot of shopping in Covent Garden , Oxford Street & Portobello Market - a first for me, and I loved it. We even saw the famous Blue Door & Book Shop from the film Notting Hill. What a fantastic, jam packed edition we have for you this month. Ingredients (Serves 4)
Heat a large pan of salted water until simmering. Cook the kale for 2-3 minutes or until tender. Scoop out into a colander with a slotted spoon. Cook the pasta shells in the same water until just tender, then drain. Heat the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan then add the sausages, pinching them into small chunks. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes, then take off the foil, sprinkle with parmesan and cook for another 20-25 minutes or until bubbling and golden. Serve with a salad of your choice.

It is still warm enough for lawns to keep growing (that’s if we have had rain!), so mow them weekly as one of your September gardening jobs to keep grass at a good Learnlength.how to scarify a lawn by using a rake to give the grass a ‘hair brush’ and dredge out dead grass, moss and weeds and, if soil is compacted in your lawn causing puddles and giving weeds an opportunity to grow, punch holes in the ground with a garden fork. Both these activities improve airflow and drainage and improve the health of your grass.
Worm casts (worm poop!) can start to be a problem as the season changes, and these little piles of excreted soil and mucus can create a perfect bed for weeds and moss if they are trodden on. Leave them alone until they have dried and then brush them away with an old-fashioned broom or the up-ended head of a rake. Did you know they are also fabulous fertiliser for using when potting up plants. So scoop them up and sprinkle around your plants.

September Gardening Tasks
Our September gardening tasks are just what you need if you want to ensure your garden looks as good as pos sible as we head into fall. Don’t be fooled to thinking that it’s a quiet time in the garden. Whatever the season, there are jobs to do out there and September, which is widely regarded as the gateway to autumn, is no excep tion. Whether it’s thinking about what to plant or considering what weeding and watering needs to be done, there are plenty of important tasks you could be getting on with this month.
Spring- Flowering bulbs planned right, they will perform from early in the year right through to late summer, starting with snowdrops and crocuses before moving on to daffodils, anemones, tulips, crown imperials (Fritillaria imperialis), and the dazzling array of summer alliums. Many varieties of bulbs, including hyacinths and narcissi, grow well in containers. Some do best with a little shade like snowdrops and bluebells.When planting bulbs, remember that most spring bulbs will favor a sunny spot, though a little shade will prolong the brilliance and longevity of the flowers. Use peat-free compost with added fertilizer and make sure you raise the pots up on feet so excess water can drain away, helping prevent the bulbs from rotting due to waterlogging.
Some plants look good as they fade, such as sedum where the flower heads hold their own for weeks and look good with a dusting of frost. Others, such as Hosta look a mess. Some gardeners cut everything back, clearing out the borders, and others leave plants uncut to encourage wildlife and cultivate a less formal look. There is also a halfway house; cut back plants that look a mess, such as Hosta, Crocosmia, Delphinium leaving in place those which still add to the border, at least for a while, which also spreads the work in the garden over the winter months. As with many aspects of gardening, there is no right or wrong it’s down to preference. Try to get the borders weed-free over the autumn and winter and then mulch, ready for next year.
During September many perennials will look tired, with browning leaves. Later, as frosts strike, some of the herbaceous perennials will collapse into brown heaps, but some garden plants keep their shape. The question is what to cut back and what to leave?
