Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the September Edition.... Well it would have been nice if the sun had made more of an appearance here in Rugby for the children’s school holidays but its been dry for the most part so I guess we can’t complain. I think we were spoilt last year with such a long hot summer that my children expected it again this year. If you went away either in this country or abroad I hope you had a lovely time and managed to stay safe & well.

the numbers stay low and they can enjoy a normal, uninterrupted school year. Have a wonderful September everyone, Anne xxx

The end of August was the 1st anniversary of my awful ankle accident. I’m pleased to say I’m finally off the crutches, albeit with a limp and can’t walk for long, but walking none the less, and I’ve even managed a short bike ride. I’m never going to get back to the exercise I used to enjoy - running, netball & tennis but apparently I will be able to cycle so that’s my focus now. For me, exercise is as good for my mind as it is for my overall health so I have to be able to do something. So if you see someone gingerly cycling around Bilton with a fierce look of determination on their face - that will be me! If you have school age children I hope they have had a great summer and I hope they settle into their new school year well. Fingers crossed that

AS SEEN ON TV! Celebrating 15 years and 13,500 home buyers helped

Buying a new house? OUR NEW BUILD INSPECTORS WILL PRODUCE A PROFESSIONAL SNAGGING LIST FOR YOUR NEW HOME. On average we find 150 snags in the average 4 bed house. Our inspectors are highly qualified and experienced and have inspected thousands of new homes nationwide. We have combined their professional knowledge to produce an effective snagging methodology which is under constant development. This is the first time that the knowledge of chartered surveyors, senior site managers, building surveyors, architects and developers has been combined to produce a new homes snagging methodology and we are extremely pleased with the results.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY: ★★★★★

“Professional company that delivered an excellent service. Their expert surveyor identified defects and inconsistencies in finish that I would never had noticed. Quick turnaround of the snagging report. After spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on a property, spending hundreds of pounds on a snagging survey is 100% value for money as it gave me such peace of mind!” (Dan Wagner).

★★★★★

“Very helpful throughout the process even though we had to change the visit date on several occasions due to the new build delays.Would certainly recommend for anyone buying a new house!” (Jeremy Haselton).

Who we are

Make a difference to a child’s life... How we make a difference

The Friendship Project was established in 1986 with the primary aim to support children disadvantaged by family circumstances. We provide children with an 'Older Friend' who helps to develop their confidence and self-esteem. Operating throughout Warwickshire, all children are referred to our Charity through Warwickshire County Council Children’s Services. We receive grants and donations from various charities, trusts and commercial organisations, as well as individuals, which help fund our operations.

How we help The need for help is great and growing. There are many social reasons why more children are in need of our support. Some have mentally or physically disabled siblings who demand much of their parent’s time. Others are being bullied at school and have become withdrawn. Some are neglected and left to fend for themselves too much of the time. Some have lost a parent for whatever reason and feel the loss deeply. Others have some form of minor disability and some of our children just have no other opportunity to go out and have fun. By providing an individual ‘Older Friend’ to give them support and take an interest in them, we can ease many of their problems. Our ‘Older Friend’ can provide access to learning opportunities and experiences the ’Younger Friend’ will not receive within the home environment. Regular contact with a positive influence in their life will enable them to broaden their horizons and grow in confidence.

“Experience has shown that a weekly visit by someone who

cares does make a difference”

Meet Sebby... Sebby was 6 years old when he was referred to The Friendship Project. He is one of five children. His mother has Lymphoedema and is bed bound and two of his siblings are Autistic. Sebby’s dad is the sole carer for the family since Sebby’s mum cannot be left and his two autistic brother’s need constant care. This means that Sebby and his other two siblings are unable to go out and have fun as there is no-one to take them. The Friendship Project matched Sebby with Lynne as the ‘Older Friend’. Lynne describes her time with Sebby as “The highlight of my week.” Sebby had never been on an escalator and very rarely did he get to play in the park. “The difference in him in a year is amazing.”

Rebuilding Dean* is 10 years old. His 'Older Friend' is Helen*. Dean’s mother sadly died of Cancer and her partner left the family home leaving three children to be raised by their Nan. Dean became very difficult at school and unable to make eye contact with teachers and other adults. By the onset of the friendship, Dean had moved to a new school. Helen took Dean to the climbing wall in the sports centre at Warwick University. Both friends enjoyed the visits and Dean rose to the physical challenge which helped to build up trust between the two of them. Slowly Dean has opened up to Helen and started to talk about himself and his difficulties during the past year or so. *names have been changed

Guide Dogs is here to help the two million people living with sight loss live the life they choose. Children and adults. Friends and family. Our expert staff, volunteers and life-changing dogs are here to help people affected by sight loss live actively, independently and well. Founded in 1934, following our first partnership in 1931, we are a charity that is almost entirely dependent on donations.

Homes still needed for guide dog puppies in Rugby Sight loss charity Guide Dogs still needs volunteers to come forward in Rugby, who could look after a guide dog puppy for the first year of their life. The charity put out an appeal for at least 10 new homes for guide dog pups in March but says enough volunteers have still not been found. Volunteer ‘Puppy Raisers’ for Guide Dogs play a vital role in the early socialisation and education of guide dogs, teaching pups basic commands and helping them get used to the outside world. At about seven weeks of age, puppies move to live with their volunteer Puppy Raisers, where they remain until they are around 12-16 months of age. They then head off to a training centre to begin their specialised training. Guide Dogs covers the cost of all the food, veterinary care and equipment required. Claire Purr, a Puppy Development Advisor for Guide Dogs, who covers Rugby, said: “Despite launching our campaign to recruit Puppy Raisers in Rugby in March, we still haven’t found enough new homes for our pups. This is a great opportunity for people in Rugby to raise a guide dog puppy, helping to prepare a pup for their future role supporting someone with sight loss. It’s a long-term volunteering role, as each pup will live with you for at least a year. We’ll provide all the training required and the support you need, so you feel well equipped to care for your pup as they grow and develop. We need to find new homes for our guide dog puppies in Rugby, to ensure we can keep our life-changing services running. If you’re from Rugby and think you could give a loving, temporary home to a guide dog pup, please do get in touch.” Volunteers must be aged over 18 and have suitable housing. Caring for a puppy is a full-time commitment and you must be able to give a guide dog pup the love and attention they deserve. Applicants must have the ability to access online content and training materials and have an email address.

To find out more, contact Guide Dogs Volunteering Coordinator for Rugby, Mike Hefferan, via mike.hefferan@guidedogs.org.uk, call 0800 781 1444 or visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/volunteering

WHAT IS TRUE 5

FAITH?

Your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2 When we want to understand the finer points of the meaning of a word we usually go to a dictionary. Looking at a well-known dictionary we found it defines the meaning of faith as, Faith: Pronunciation: /ferθ/ Noun: 1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something 2. strong belief in the doctrines of a religion based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.

I am sure we will all agree this definition is not very helpful. We have simply been given two contrasting definitions for one word. So when someone uses the word ‘Faith’ do they mean a certainty or unproven conviction? Which means that it is questioning the whole foundation of belief in the Bible as the as the word of God.

We invite you to visit our website to see what God says about faith and how He presents the background to it. We also have a large selection of articles about life and it’s purpose. The topics are many and varied offering answers to many of the puzzles in life. Do have a look at our website index.

...could you make a difference? Become an ‘Older Friend’ As always, there are more children needing our support which means that we need more volunteers. Would you have 2-3 hours to spare per week to become an ‘Older Friend’? Activities can include drawing; painting; shopping; cooking, swimming or watching a football match. As you would expect, you must meet certain criteria, including being over 18 years old, preferably with transport; having a genuine interest in children and a desire to help those in need; providing two character references and going through a Criminal Records Bureau check. SEASONAL RECIPES Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter

September is a bountiful month for fresh seasonal British produce. Fruits like blackberries are at their very best, whilst vegetable-wise courgettes and runner beans are also at their peak.

Ingredients 400g free-range good qualty pork sausages 400 grams of parpadelle 40g of parmesan cheese 2 tins of chopped tomatoes 2 onions 2 garlic cloves 2 tablespoons of fennel seeds 1 bunch of flat leaf parsley

P rk

a p p a r d e ll e

Bring a large pot of water to the boil with a pinch of salt. Prepare the ingredients by peeling and finely chopping the onion, peel and grate the garlic, and roughly chop the parsley. Next grate the parmesan cheese. Heat some olive oil in a large frying pan on medium-high heat. Cut open the pork sausage, remove the meat and discard the skin. Next fry your sausage meat for 5 mins until the edges start to crisp, break the sausage meat up into smaller pieces. Remove the pork when cooked and keep it to one side. Next cook your onion in the same pan on medium heat for 5 mins. Add your garlic and fennel seeds and cook for a further 2 mins before adding the chopped tomatoes. Add the pork back into the pan and allow the sauce to thicken for 8-10 mins. Season with a pinch of salt and a grind of black pepper. Sprinkle some sugar to lift the flavour of the tomatoes. While the ragu is cooking, add the pappardelle to the boiling water and cook for 7 mins. Once cooked, drain your pasta and drizzle over some oil to stop it sticking together. Add your pasta to your ragu along with most, but not all, of your parsley. Toss or gently fold the ingredients together. Finish with the remaining parsley and parmesan.

Ingredients 1 courgette 1 avocado juice of 1 1/2 lime 1 Tbsp finely cut basil leaves 1 Tbsp finely cut mint leaves 1 garlic clove finely cut chilli to taste flaked almonds to sprinkle pumpkin seeds to sprinkle salt & pepper drizzle honey

Courgettes are at their best this month so why not make a healthy salad. This recipe is for one, so just adjust ingredients for however many you are feeding. Add toppings to suit tomatoes, olives etc. This recipe only takes ten minutes to create so is truely fast food!

Instructions Cut the courgette using a spiraliser or julienne peeler. Place on a plate. Place avocado flesh in a separate bowl. Mash to a paste with a fork. Add crushed garlic and lime juice. Toss avocado mixture with the courgette and chopped herbs. Add chilli. Season to taste. Serve with almond flakes and pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top (I also like to add a tiny drizzle of agave syrup or honey).

SEPTEMBER GARDENING TASKS Summers gone already, September always seems to arrive so quickly. It’s a lovely month though; for those with allotments its harvest time, beautiful angles of sunshine, and still plenty of warm weather to enjoy. And it’s also quite a productive month for sowing seeds, planting bulbs and growing new plants – some to enjoy soon, and some to get started for next year. Here’s a few tasks to complete in September.

Lawns

September is the prime month for autumn lawn renovation because there is usually warmth, possibly good rainfall and fewer seeding weeds. This month is the best time to apply the autumn fertiliser, do any weed control. Raking, scarifying and over-sowing. Mowing is required less frequently during autumn, and raising the height of the cut as the growth rate of the grass slows down. Time spent on the lawn this month will see a beautful lawn next year.

Seeds to Sow in September

September is the ideal time to sow hardy annuals for spring flowers the following year. The seeds can also be sown in spring, but sowing in autumn often results in earlier flowers and more robust plants. Simply prepare a flower bed, raking and either sow in rows, or scatter on a prepared seedbed. Cornflowers, marigold, poppies, Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena). Some of these plants self-seed readily, so once sown, you will enjoy them every year.

Dividing Perennials Autumn is a good time to divide clumps of perennials (Perennials come back for many years, depending on the plant and winter weather conditions) such as hardy geraniums, hosta. Daylily etc. Lift the clump and then divide it into pieces, either by prising it apart with two forks or cutting it up with a spade or bread knife. Each piece needs some leaves and roots. Older pieces from the centre of the clump should be thrown away, but newer pieces can be replanted or shared with friends. Some perennials, such as sedums, will benefit from being divided every few years to keep the clump growing vigorously ensuring plenty of flowers.
