Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the September Edition.... As I write this, the school holidays are almost over and we have done the school uniform shop, shoe shop and the obligatory stationery shop - how my 2 girls get through, and ‘need’ so much snazzy stationery is a mystery to me - but I don’t think I was any different at their age. My son isn’t fussed, as long as he has a pen to write with he’s happy. Getting the 3 of them prepped for returning to school has brought home to me just how much I’ve loved having them home for almost 6 months. We’ve done so much as a family, learned lots, watched lots thanks to Disney + and Netflix, played games, had fun, been silly and just generally been together. Lockdown hasn’t brought us closer as we are already a tight knit team but I can honestly say its been fabulous. So much so that I’m not sure I’m ready to let them go back to school but that’s for both emotional and practical reasons - I am nervous of the ‘year group bubbles’ that are happening in most schools. With 3 children in 3 separate schools that’s now 1 HUGE bubble that our family now belongs to, and that concerns me. If you have children/ grandchildren going back to school I hope you, and they, are feeling ok about it. It will be different for them but I’m sure the teachers, heads and deputy
heads will all do their best to Anne ease them back into their very different and new routine of school life. Sometimes I think the children adapt far easier and quicker than us adults! As the world starts turning again and events starts to be organised and re-organised please do remember to send in the details to Catherine (details below) as we can hopefully re-start our What’s On Guide and Community News page which is for Charity and Not For Profit events. Listings on both these pages are free of charge and we will publish as many events as we can squeeze in. We will work on our Regular Events page too this month as many regular classes are starting back up again in September - look out for that next month. Again, please get in touch if you have anything you would like listing that happens on a weekly basis. Stay safe and my very best wishes to you all, Keep smiling, even behind your masks!
Anne xx

Misty Double Glazing?
Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!
Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.
The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.
Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units
This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.
Clearly a great service!

The many benefits of Juicing Have you considered juicing? It is a wonderful quick and easy way of improving your health and vitality? We need to take care of our bodies, and this means every cell! Our bodies comprise of millions of microscopic cells. These cells make up all the tissues, liquids and the bones of our miraculous bodies which are full of life energy. To be healthy we must nourish these cells. Nothing works well if it is starved and although the body is very tolerant of bad behaviour, ultimately it will breakdown. It does send us warning messages when it is reaching its limit of tolerance – we may become tired and fatigued. We may develop headaches, pains, or other illnesses. These problems arise directly from the state and environment of our cells. For example, if we have neglected to feed and nourish these cells and at the same time failed to cleanse the body of accumulated waste, we are more likely to become unwell. We may not have starved our cells, but we may have poisoned them with accumulated waste. What do we need to do to protect us from these illnesses and live with optimum health? Most importantly we must take care of our little cells by providing them with live, vital nourishment. This nourishment must be readily available to the cells. To this end it is recommended that every day we eat sufficient amounts of live raw food to care for the cells and tissues in our system. Fresh raw vegetable juices are the absolute best, quickest and easiest means of providing the nourishment our body needs. If we can drink one or two large glasses full of these juices each day, we will quickly enjoy the benefits and our health will improve. Glass Rich in Iron Juice – A Tonic in a and ned retai core 2 apples unpeeled, with quartered leaves 1 small beetroot unpeeled plus 1 medium cucumber Large handful of spinach leaves Large handful of watercress C, folic acid, This juice is rich in Iron, Vitamin C helps with in vitam The . tene -caro beta and iron absorption.
Energy in a Glass – For those Busy Days 6 large spinach leaves 3 medium carrots, unpeeled 1 apple, unpeeled, with core retained and quartered 1 medium beetroot, unpeeled, with leaves This juice is rich in Carotenes, Vitamin C, Potassium, and the B vitamins. All good for brain pow but also slows down skin aging er and the B vitamins support the nervous system.
Vegetables juices are known as the builders of the body. Fruit juices are the cleansers. Fruit juicing are good but do not provide the same constructive effect on the system that vegetable juices can. Ready prepared juices do not work in the same way because they have lost their vital energy in the processing, packaging, and storage. Freshly juiced RAW vegetables and fruit are without doubt the best. Organically grown are of course the most beneficial because they are mainly free from artificially fertilisers and pesticides. I recommend the following recipes, but you need to experiment with the quantities of each ingredient. It is important that you enjoy your juices, so you continue to make them every day. A group of writers from Rugby have published their first anthology of work
T
he Rugby Cafe Writers were formed three years ago by author and artist Theresa Le Flem following an event at the Rugby Festival of Culture. They usually meet every fortnight at the St Andrew’s Church cafe, though currently meetings are taking place on line. Their new anthology, titled ‘Get to the Point’, comprises more than 60 contributions varying from short stories to poetry to journalism. Some members are experienced and published authors whilst, for others, it is their first opportunity to get their work in print. Theresa said: “By sharing our experiences, we enjoy encouraging others not only to buy our books but to set out on that journey themselves. Some have always dreamt of doing this, but never taken the first step. The common saying that ‘everyone has a book in them’ is, we have discovered, surprisingly true.” The group includes former West End actress and radio presenter Madalyn Morgan who has written eight books in her Dudley Sisters wartime saga. Voiceover artist Terri Brown has just published her first full-length horror novel, Shadow Man. Family historian Christine Hancock has created a thrilling series of books based in Anglo-Saxon England. Bella Osborne’s romantic comedies can be found on the shelves of Tesco and Asda, and regularly appear in the Amazon Top 100 best-selling charts. And former GP David Boulton has published a trilogy featuring Victorian Detective Sam Spray and has just completed his fourth novel set in World War Two. Between them, the writers have published more than 40 books. Each of their meetings is a chance to exchange news and tips about the process of writing, such as how to get published, editing, or how to write the perfect opening. Some members just love books and turn up to share their enthusiasm for the written word. If you are interested in writing and would like to join the group, please visit the website below. ‘Get to the Point’, a 260-page paperback, is available from Amazon or via the group’s website:

Anya Court resident 102nd birthday Like us on Facebook and follow uscelebrates on Twitter A rugby resident recently celebrated her 102nd birthday at Anya Court Care Home on Dunchurch Road. Joan was born on 18th August 1918 in Rugby, Warwickshire. She worked in the toy shop her dad owned on Sheep Street until she met her late husband Don Ridgway at church. The couple married in 1939 and went on to have three children. Joan Ridgway spent her special day with outdoor visits from her family in the visitor’s suites at the home and also enjoyed a series of video calls from family around the globe – as far as Australia and New Zealand. Joan, 102 said: “To see all my family from all over the world on the big cinema screen was emotional but wonderful.” Joan also says her secret to longevity is “to enjoy a little bit of everything except alcohol!” Customer Relationship Manager at Anya Court, Karen Handley said: “Joan was our first resident at Anya Court Care Home and she is much loved by all of us here. “Joan is an inspiration to us all and to celebrate her 102nd birthday with her was a privilege.”

Peel parsnips, carrot and potatoes. Cut carrots and parsnips in 1 cm slices and potatoes in 2cm dice. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Fry finely sliced onion until soft. Add crushed garlic, grated ginger, mild curry paste and ground cumin. Fry gently for a couple of minutes. Add vegetables to saucepan along with chopped tomatoes, red lentils and vegetable stock. Bring to the boil, then cook half-covered for 15 mins under medium heat. Add grated creamed coconut and drained chickpeas. Cook uncovered for a further 10 mins until vegetables are tender. Season to taste with lime juice, salt and pepper. Serve with wholegrain rice, chopped coriander leaves and spring onions. (This recipe serves 6)
750g peeled and cored cooking apples, sliced 100g caster sugar, plus extra if needed
450g blackberries washed and drained 75g shelled hazelnuts 200g plain flour
200g unsalted butter at room temperature 75g soft brown sugar
Cream of your choice, to serve Heat the oven to 175°C/155°C fan. To make the sloe gin syrup, pour the gin into a large, heavy-based saucepan and bring to the boil, then turn down the heat to a steady simmer. Reduce the gin by three quarters – it takes about 1 hour on a low heat. Near the end, taste for sweetness, adding a little caster sugar if needed. This makes about 200ml rich dark syrup. Put the apples in a saucepan with the 100g caster sugar and 100ml cold water. Cook over a medium-high heat for 10-15 minutes until the apples soften. They should bubble quite a lot – stir regularly to stop them sticking to the pan.
When the apples are soft, add the brambles. Stir and cook just for a minute or two, then carefully transfer the mixture to a 1.2 litre pie dish and set aside.
To make the crumble, heat a dry non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the hazelnuts and toast for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden. Leave to cool, then roughly chop. Put the flour in a mixing bowl, then add the butter in small pieces and rub into the flour with your fingertips. Mix in the sugar and nuts, again using your fingertips. Scatter the crumble over the fruit to cover, then bake for 40 minutes or until golden. Don’t worry if a little juice seeps out from under the topping. Serve with cream and the sloe gin syrup.

Brighten up your 2021! Fed up with 2020? Then it’s time to look forward to a much brighter 2021 with a fantastic Rugby Town Calendar that celebrates all things ‘Rugby’. Dazzler18 (courtesy of www.destructionarts.com) is a relative newcomer to Rugby and its world famous Art Scene. Born fully-formed in the year 2018CE, Dazzler18 has one thing on his weird and wonderfully simple mind: capturing colour in all its beautiful glory. It’s like, when he sees stuff (that to many other mortal beings might seem a bit plain, ugly or worn out) through his ‘Incredible Pair of Love Specs’ suddenly the whole darn world is revealed in a spectrum of incandescent ultracolour and deep, deep meaningfulness. Then he has to do the difficult bit of capturing what he sees on paper through the magical medium of watercolour. And he ain’t too bad at that either. In The Rugby Town Calendar 2021 Dazzler18 takes ‘Lockdown Rugby’ as his inspiration. This first foray into calendar creation contains 12 local images of well known businesses and places and includes Rugby St. Cross Hospital, Jean’s Flowers, Fast Frame, Gallacher’s of Rugby and Maia Gelato. Head over to the www.destructionarts.com website and bag your 2021 bit of fun for £12. It’s a tad cheaper if you go in person to the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum’s Visitor Centre (while stocks last). Say Dazzler18 from Destruction Arts sent you. There are lots of super colourful prints that might take your fancy on his website too. Look out for the fantastic “The Rugby Town” print. That particular one is a little bit special.
But wait... there’s a chance you can get a calendar for nowt! Dazzler18 is particularly proud to be part of this fabulous Rugby community and that means supporting wonderful initiatives such as the Rugby Register. They have teamed up to provide a daring prize draw where you can win a calendar of your very own for not doing very much at all. Check out the details below.
Competition Time! There are 3 calendars up for grabs and for your chance to win one of these fantastic calendars simply tell us: Question: What do you need to say to the lovely people at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum’s Visitor Centre when you go in to purchase a discounted copy of the calendar? Answers to: Rugby Town Calendar Competition, Harcourt, 2b Longrood Road, Rugby CV22 7RG. Email: catherine@rugbyregister.co.uk or Facebook Message: @TheRugbyRegister Closing date: 15th October 2020. Winners will be announced in the November magazine.

HELP! - I think I am losing my hair! In today’s modern society with social media, and lately zoom calls for business, more and more people are aware of the way they look and want to look their best. It is a fact that there are over 8 million Women and 7 million men in the UK with some kind of hair or scalp concern and this is growing. If you are one of these then it is really hard to find specialist help with GP’s overstretched, their concern is your general health and not your hair. Unfortunately, in many cases people turn to the Internet searching for the solution to their hair problems. This is where it gets confusing, there are so many products and claims that it can be difficult to know where to start, let alone the costs involved and will any of them work? If I pay more do, I get better results, usually the short answer is probably not! With so many people with hair loss it can lead to mental health issues with them often not wishing to leave the house or be seen in public There is help at hand though in the form of a Trichologist. A Trichologist is a specialist in the hair and scalp and via a consultation can identify the causes of your hair or scalp concerns and advise you on the correct treatments, what will work and what won’t work - A consultation with a Trichologist can give you back the control over your hair and scalp as well as saving time, money and often disappointment when the promised results do not materialise. Eva Proudman MIT IAT is one of the most sought after UK Trichologists, not only does she have a network of Nationwide Clinics she is also the Vice Chairman of The Institute of Trichologists and a consultant for various leading brands and product houses using her extensive hair and scalp knowledge to provide advice to the millions of people who suffer hair and scalp problems every day. Eva says: ‘It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, male or female, changes to the hair and scalp cause fear, panic, anxiety and depression, I know that many of the conditions can be effectively treated or managed and I am on a mission to ensure that we highlight the many different conditions and range of treatments, cosmetic and surgical options so that everyone can understand what we offer as Trichologists and can access the service to address their individual hair and scalp problems’ Eva is delighted to have been appointed the Consultant Trichologist for a brand-new TV programme, to be filmed in October 2020. Here she will highlight the many different hair and scalp concerns that she sees in clinic, from excessive hair shedding, to scarring hair loss, and track the patients from initial consultation through their journey to a resolution providing treatment and advise along the way. The production company are making this warm and positive TV series where we will take a sensitive and dignified look at issues affecting the hair and scalp to highlight the impressive results that can be achieved with correct diagnosis and treatment and highlight the growing concerns of peoples hair and scalp and show that there is help available and how to access this and what results can be achieved. If you are suffering from a hair loss or any scalp conditions, from any cause, and would like to be considered for this TV series or would just like a consultation with Eva, we’d love to have a no obligation chat with you. via phone, email whichever you prefer, get in touch: Please mention The Rugby Register when replying to adverts, you - eva.proudman@ukhairconsultants.com - 01788 819325thank @evaproudmanmit @ukhairconsultants
Cardiac Rehab Team doesn't miss a beat as the team take prides in putting patients first "To all the wonderful Cardiac Rehab team, you are amazing - kind, caring, professional, knowledgeable and full of fun – all this amid a pandemic! A big thank you from the bottom of my newly refurbished heart!." The Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at the Hospital of St Cross is renowned locally, regionally and nationally for always putting their patients first and going the extra mile. This has been put to the test during the COVID-19 pandemic. With patients needing to shield for 12 weeks, the team had to be creative and flexible to ensure they were given the care they needed from afar. Jo Holdsworth, Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme Manager, said: "We pride ourselves in having a very close relationship with our patients. "By the time they get to us they have been through a lot and the service we offer is more than physical rehabilitation, for many it is psychological, social and emotional. "That is why when the pandemic caused services to be stopped we feared for them in many ways and knew we had to do something to continue to support them. "Every patient that has been referred for cardiac rehab since March has received bespoke information about the support available to them so that they never felt without the support they needed." More than 100 patients have been cared for through this service, with many of them lining up to show their appreciation and to offer examples of the difference the team has been making.
One patient shared: "I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team, especially during lockdown. Even though we have been stuck at home, your help, kindness and advice on the phone and the online programme has been a big help to my recovery." Another added: "Thank you for your calls, I am well and busy training for my five mile walk for Cancer Research. I really appreciate your advice and support over the last few months in keeping me motivated." The team, which has started to restore face to face cardiac rehab assessment clinics and will reinstate small group exercise sessions from mid September, will use its experiences from COVID to ensure its services continue to go from strength to strength.

Feeling bloated, most days, for 3 weeks could be a sign of ovarian cancer. Chances are it’s nothing to worry about, but finding it early makes it more treatable. So if you can’t get rid of that bloated feeling, tell your doctor.

GARDENING JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER Although we are nearing autumn, there are still plenty of gardening tasks. Start collecting and composting those fallen leaves. Raise the height of your mower blades, start growing new lawn, dead heading, plant trees and shrubs, to name but a few. Keep on top of these September garden jobs and you’ll keep your garden space in tip top condition over the changing seasons.

It is best to harvest and store your own seeds in the middle of a sunny day, when moisture levels are at their lowest. Only harvest ripe seeds that look hard and brown. Store them in paper bags or envelopes; label these with the name of the plant and the harvest date, then snip the seed head off and place the whole thing into the envelope. When you are ready to sort, working envelope by envelope, tip the contents onto a tray and gently remove any chaff. Tip the seeds back into the envelope, seal and store in a dry container.

Divide summer-flowering perennials this will help to re-energise them, encouraging them to reboot, to grow back next year with more vigour and true to form once more. If any or all of the plants look as though nothing will restore them to their former glory then be ruthless and take them out altogether and replace them with something else.

Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers or borders, especially daffodils, snowdrops and tulips in spring. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow. Plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths, preferably by the end of September and you will be rewarded, in time, with a stunning splash of colour in those darker months.
