Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the September Edition of The Rugby Register Well that’s been the least stressful, most enjoyable school summer holidays to date. I printed myself a planner for the whole 6 weeks and mapped out work, children, holidays and managed to get the juggling just right this time. We’ve enjoyed a week abroad, a weekend away in Lincolnshire and time at home. Getting organised before the holidays was key this time (I’m not normally good at that I’m a procrastinator through and through) and I’ve actually enjoyed the summer rather than dreading it, muddling through and feeling stressed. My 3 are all back at school now and I can concentrate on catching up on the non urgent admin that didn’t get done. I’ve realised that the school holidays are to be embraced and not dreaded, I won’t have them at school age forever will I?
I wish you all a wonderful September and remember if you have any feedback, would like anything included in our What’s On Guide or Community News both are FREE of charge or would like information on advertising with us please do get in touch with myself or Catherine using the details below.

Misty Double Glazing?
Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!
Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.
The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.
Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units
This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.
Clearly a great service!

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert helps us to understand how much is too much sugar It is my opinion as a Nutritionist that refined sugar is bad for our health and is responsible for the epidemic in overweight and obese children and adults. I believe that refined sugar is the most degenerative food that we put in our mouths. It is highly addictive and has no nutritional value, all the natural food nutrition is stripped from the plant during processing. Refined sugar makes food taste good and is produced by a multi billion pound industry. The sugar industry is highly political and aggressive in protecting its current position. What are the health risks associated with diets high in sugar? The following is an indication of some of the diseases where refined sugar is partly responsible. I hope it will encourage you to think about your families refined sugar consumption.
Yogurts – can contain tablespoons of sugar – especially the snack-
style tubs and mini-pots branded for babies. The plain whole varieties are best and you can add fresh chopped fruit or a little honey (not for babies under 12 months old). Baby Foods – even organic varieties can contain lots of sugar, it is
a key preservative. Please try and cook for your babies – you can do large batches and freeze them in small amounts. Biscuits, Pudding and Cakes – these are loaded with sugar,
even the so called healthy varieties. Bake your own; at least you are then in control; add apples and other fruit to reduce sugar content. Chocolate – it is best to choose varieties that contain 70 per
1. Sugar is the leading cause of dental decay i.e. teeth cavities, bleeding gums, failure of bone structure, and loss of teeth. Cleaning your teeth regularly and flossing particularly after eating sweet foods does provide some protection from these problems but reducing refined sugar intake is essential for dental health. 2. Sugar is one of the main causes of diabetes, and recent research indicates that Type 2 diabetes, which used to be described as Adult Onset Diabetes is now far more common in children and young adults. The more sugary food we eat, the more insulin we release to process the sugar, which can lead to insulin becoming less effective, resulting in Type 2 diabetes. The problem is also linked with obesity which in children is usually associated with high energy dense foods such as cakes, fast food, chocolate, fizzy sweet drinks. Low fat foods often have increased levels of refined sugars, so even though you may think you are eating a low fat healthy meal; it is probably loaded with hidden sugar. It is important to reduce your family’s consumption of refined sugar to help improve their health. I would like to see fizzy drinks banned completely as they are full of sugar and chemicals. 3. Too much sugar can unbalance the endocrine system and puts a strain on the adrenal glands, pancreas and liver, causing blood sugar to fluctuate widely. 4. Some other effect of sugar on the body are: it increases overgrowth of Candida yeast organisms, increases fatigue, anxiety and irritability, increases hyperactivity in about 50% of children and can make it difficult to lose weight because of high insulin levels which causes the body to store carbohydrates as fat. Sugar is added in unexpected places for example savoury ready-made meals, soups, sandwich spreads, ketchup, baked beans, and cough mixtures. Slimming products are often loaded with sugar. The following is a brief list of high sugar foods. Ready-Meals - a jar of ready-made Bolognese sauce can contain
7g of sugar per 100g which is double that of baked beans.
cent cocoa, preferably plain, as it contains less sugar and more antioxidants.
Breakfast Cereals – avoid any that are coated with sugar, honey,
or are “frosted”, even crispy muesli can contain lots of sugar. Choose instead Shredded whole wheat and Weetabix or corn flakes and muesli with “no added sugar”. Drinks – Fizzy drinks can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar each
serving; also avoid sweetened juices and squash.
Read food labels and let’s work at reducing the burden on the NHS by taking control of our refined sugar intake. If you are struggling with your weight and would like motivation and encouragement to take control of your health; please contact me about my Healthy Living for Life Programme. Live with joy and health. Elizabeth Beetham

Have you considered accessing the equity in your home? You may be able to release cash to pay off an existing mortgage, provide you with a regular income to top up your pension, carry out some home improvements or treat yourselves to that holiday that you have always wanted. Grosvenor Independent Financial Planning is your local advice service that gives you access to a range of Lifetime Mortgage providers. To be eligible for equity release you must be aged 55 and own your home. We do not arrange Home Reversion Plans. We will only recommend Lifetime Mortgage products that meet the standards of the Equity Release Council, who oversee the industry and its members and ensure that their strict standards and principles are upheld. We will spend time understanding your financial circumstances in detail so that we can recommend the most appropriate product for you if we feel it is suitable. The first consultation is totally free of charge and without obligation. If you do have any questions about equity release, the service we offer or if you would like to book a no-obligation appointment, please call us on:
Alan McMahon DipPFS, Certs CII (MP & ER). 49, Barkus Close, Southam, Warwickshire, CV47 1GB. Tel: 01926 814049 or 07973 889730 or please email: alan.mcmahon@grosvenorifp.co.uk Grosvenor Independent Financial Planning is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (Registration No 624572). A lifetime mortgage is secured against your home. Typically, there are no monthly repayments. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. Lifetime mortgages will reduce the value of your estate and may affect your entitlement to means tested benefits. Our typical fee is ÂŁ895 which can be paid from the advance.

What happens to our mental health when the press pack up and leave? Talking about personal mental health issues has become more and more common in recent years. So much so, that celebrities no longer shy away from the subject. In fact, you might even be forgiven for thinking that suffering from a mental health issue has taken on a sheen of high-status glamour. The media seems ever quick and eager to jump on the latest high-profile stories, from the Instagram star Kendall Jenner’s admission of “full-on panic attacks”, to Prince Harry breaking with royal protocol to open up about the depressive effects of his unprocessed grief. Meanwhile, inciting subjects including eating disorders, knife crime, and domestic violence have been flitting in and out of the headlines. There’s no doubt that some people will find comfort in this type of media coverage, particularly if they are suffering from similar issues themselves. But headlines and stories are painfully fleeting, and it is becoming all too common to see serious topics summarised and glossed over, for the benefit of a quick coffee-time read. So perhaps we need to ask ourselves: what happens when the cameras stop rolling, and the journalists pack away their notepads? Complex, messy, frightening and debilitating Far from being trendy and glamorous, in reality mental health issues are often complex, messy, and debilitating – not to mention unbearably frightening. It seems obvious to say that putting your whole life on hold because you feel indescribably lonely, or you are unable to get out of bed, with suicidal thoughts that mean you are never sure if you will make it through another day, is far from desirable. Families and relationships can be destroyed, studies can be disrupted, jobs and financial security can be lost, taking with them the promise of a stable, ‘normal’ future. We need to remember that for many people, terrifying thoughts and feelings like these are not going to be resolved within the confines of a celebrity confession, or a five-minute news story. The people who suffer from domestic violence or anorexia will continue to do so long after the media have lost interest. Ask for help Meanwhile, many sufferers will remain silent, too scared to ask for the help they need, or perhaps even believing that such help doesn’t exist. Consider the tragic story of the former Love Island contestant Mike Thalassitis, who sadly took his life earlier this year. ITV have since pledged to improve the aftercare received by its reality TV stars, by actively offering support to all participants, “not just those who ask for it”. Perhaps this is an approach we can all take. Remaining vigilant of the needs of the people we love and encouraging them to talk about their feelings – no matter what hot issue happens to be trending on Facebook or Twitter at the moment. Explore, understand and manage your feelings Working with a trained therapist can also be very beneficial, from a safe and confidential space where intense feelings can be explored, understood, and managed. While mental health issues will always be with us, help is always available. Our friendly team at All About People in Leamington Spa are on hand to listen to and support you whenever you are ready, and without any need for sensational headlines. To access professional, specialist and confidential corporate counselling and therapy services call 01926 882521 or email info@aapcounselling.co.uk

Gardening Jobs for SEPTEMBER Summer is slowly withdrawing and autumn is just around the corner. Days grow shorter and nights become cooler. As trees shed leaf after leaf you still have some practical tasks around your garden this September.
S p rin g P r e p Spring might seem like a long way off, but September is the perfect month to start making preparations for a beautiful floral display. Plant spring bedding, such as pansies, wallflowers and sweet Williams. There should be a good selection of plants at the garden centre. Water them well before planting and give them a good soak whenever the weather is dry to help them establish quickly. Buy spring-flowering bulbs. Choose firm, plump bulbs and avoid any with signs of mould. Plant them as soon as possible so they can start putting down roots. The cool, moist conditions of late autumn suit tulips best so wait until then before planting them.

te r s
September is the perfect time to start your autumn garden tidy up. This means there will be lots of leaf clearance, picking up debris, and plant deadheading. One of the key tasks when it comes to September garden clearance is to check your gutters, repair and clean them. Call in the experts who will get rid of clogs and blockages in gutters and remove debris and fallen leaves.

Aer
At the end of summer you may look at your lawn and notice that it is not as thick and lush as it did back in spring. First, you should aerate the lawn. This means making small holes in the ground which allow air to penetrate the soil. This will reduce the compaction that’s a result from all the summer games and outdoor activities. The next thing to do is to remove weeds, dead grass and moss. Don’t forget that lawns also need fertilising and this should be on your September gardening checklist.

We provide advice on mortgages, buy to lets, savings and investments, all aspects of retirement planning (personal pensions, company pensions, drawdown pensions and annuities), life and critical illness planning, income protection, insurances and estate planning. SEASONAL RECIPE Look out for seasonal food this month in the shops, which will be packed with goodness - artichoke, aubergine, beetroot, broccoli, butternut squash, carrot, courgette, fennel. leek, mangetout, marrow, parsnip, peas, pepper, potato, runner bean, sweetcorn, tomatoes, mushrooms plus blackberries, damson, fig, grape, pear, plums.. You have got to try this easy cake, not your average upseide down cake. The good thing is that while baking, the plums release some delicious juices. Once baked, when you turn the cake upside down, these delicious plum juices moisten the warm cake making it heavenly.

Ingredients 140g of unsalted butter, at room temperature 150g of light brown sugar 15 damsons, or other plum, halved and destoned blackberries, or blueberries (optional) 125g of self-raising flour 40g of ground almonds 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 85g of caster sugar 2 large eggs 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 tsp almond extract 120g of milk whipped cream or ice cream, to serve
U
Time 1 hour 20 mins
Method Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4 Place 55g of the butter in a 23cm oven-proof frying pan or cake tin. Place the pan in the oven and leave until the butter has melted. Remove the pan and swirl the butter around so it’s distributed evenly. Sprinkle over the brown sugar and lay the plums on top of the sugar in a single, tightly-packed layer, skin-side up. If you’d like, fill in any gaps with blackberries or blueberries Now make the batter. Mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Beat the remaining butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light, then add the sugar and beat until creamy. Add the eggs, beat until light and fluffy, then beat in the vanilla and almond extract Add the milk and the remaining dry ingredients to the mixture and mix with a spatula until just blended. Spoon the batter evenly over plums. Bake until golden and a toothpick or knife inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean (this will take about 50-60 minutes). Transfer to a wire rack and cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes Using a knife, cut around the sides of the pan to loosen the cake. Place a plate on top of the cake pan then invert the cake. Let it stand with the pan still on for 5 minutes, then gently lift off the pan. Serve the cake warm with whipped cream, or ice cream.
Like us on Facebook and us on Twitter Local Church and Community Centre Celebrate a follow ‘Harvest’ of Good News The Eastlands side of town and the Southfields Estate have a ‘new’ Parish church: St Peter and St John’s Church. Now, officially, the parish church for this area of town this building which began as a cafe church for railway workers in the early 1900s is celebrating a new status this October. No longer simply a part of the larger St Andrew’s Parish, St Peter and St John’s Church is now a parish in its own right serving a community of over 12,000 people. The church has an integrated community centre which is used by many local groups such as the Scouts, a Knit and Natter group, a Samba band, a youth theatre group and mother and toddler groups. The church auditorium is also a regular venue for musicians and concerts. Affectionately known as PJs, the building has had one big problem for the last 30 years. “Our front door was bricked up, when the church was rearranged to create an internal church hall and this has had the effect of making us look like we are closed”, says the Rev Sheila Bridge, vicar of St Peter and St John’s. Over the last few years the church and community have worked hard together to improve the building adding first of all new toilets and now in the summer of 2019, they have finally been able to reopen that all-important front door. Many local people have happy memories of weddings and christenings at the church where family photos were taken by the front door. At the recent open day many recalled such occasions and are delighted that the door has been restored. As if that weren’t good news enough, the church also heard this summer that an application to the ASDA Foundation had been successful. ASDA are donating £26,314 towards the cost of a new church boiler in recognition of the fact that the church and its community hall are a vital local asset. The church has offered classes in English as a second language, courses in mental wellbeing, a gardening group and contributes in many other ways to the well-being of the area. “When the church boiler was condemned in 2018, all of this was under threat as we were unable to heat the building” said the Rev Sheila Bridge “so we are deeply grateful to ASDA for this grant and look forward to having a new boiler soon”. There will be a special service on Sunday, October 6th at 10:30 AM when Bishop Christopher of Coventry Cathedral will be present to bless the new door and celebrate the new status of the church and all the good news. This service will also be a Harvest Festival, so anyone who comes is invited to bring a donation for the Rugby food bank. To find out more about what goes on in this building or if you would like to see the archive of historic photos please go to www.peterjohnchurch.org.uk . If you are interested in using the church hall as a venue for your event please contact stpeterjohnsrugby@gmail.com
