Autumn colours, leaves and a chill in the air, such great month. Do you or did you used to go conkering? I loved it as a child, climbing the trees, throwing sticks up to make the conkers fall. Then getting them home and putting them in a dark cupbaord, or soaking them in vinegar to make them super hard ready for playing conkers with my brothers and at school with friends. Oh the bruises, but what great, simple fun it was.

What a great edition we have this month for you: halloween, autumn and even Christmas as we start the rapid decent towards December! Our brilliantly popular annual Childrens competition to design our December front cover is back. So if you have a child, grandchild, neice, nephew etc that likes to draw be sure to pass them the details of how they can enter. You can find it on page 38.

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Roasted Pumpkin Hummus

Robustly flavorful and loaded with nutrition, this healthy Roasted Pumpkin Hummus is simply out of this world! It is perfect way of using the flesh of those carved pumpkins.

Ingredients (Serves 6)

450g diced fresh pumpkin , peel removed

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 head garlic , the pointy end cut off by about 1/4 inch to expose the cloves

400g can chickpeas, drained (reserve some liquid) and drained

2-3 tablespoons tahini

1 tablespoon pure maple syrup for just a touch of flavor (note: artificial maple syrup will simply make the hummus sweeter without adding much maple flavor)

4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

juice of one lemon

1 teaspoon salt

toasted pumpkin seeds, olive oil and a light sprinkle of cinnamon for serving olive oil and a sprinkle of cinnamon for serving.

Method

Preheat the oven to 230c

In a bowl, toss together the pumpkin, oil and cumin. Spread the pieces out on a lined cookie sheet and add the head of garlic. Roast for 25-30 minutes or until the edges of the pumpkin and garlic have become a little blackened. Place the pumpkin, garlic and chickpeas in a food processor along with the tahini, olive oil, maple syrup, lemon and salt. Blend until smooth, adding more olive oil as necessary. Add more tahini, maple syrup and salt to taste. If you want it creamier add some of the reserved chickpea liquid and process until incorporated.

Scoop into a serving bowl drizzled with some olive oil and sprinkled with some pumpkin seeds and a touch of cinnamon. Serve with crisps, crackers, toasted pita bread or batons of carrot.

INDOOR BOWLS CLUB

Thornfield Indoors Bowls Club, Bruce Williams Way, Rugby, have members from as young as 10 right up to people in their senior years! It’s a great game that helps hugely with self-confidence and social skills and is great fun too. You don’t need any experience and people of all abilities can take part. Bowls can be played as a recreational social sport for fun or competitively in a league, either way you will be met with a warm welcome at Thornfield and supported whichever you choose. How many sports do you have where a team can be made up of 10 year olds and 80 year olds high fiving down the green!

The indoor season runs from mid September to mid April and is open 7 days a week with various opening times (see website). New members are welcome to come along and try before committing to a membership. The learn to bowl class is every Saturday 10am – midday. Junior and adult sections, family groups welcome. £2.50 adults, £1.50 under 18’s and starts on 8th October 2022 until March 2023.

October Gardening Tasks

There’s a lot you can do in the garden in October, whether that’s making your garden look better, harvesting crops or planting new ones. These autumn gardening tips will help you get the most from your garden in October and prepare it for colder months ahead.

Autumn Tasks

• Plant drifts of spring bulbs informally in a lawn, including crocuses, daffodils.

• Lift tender cannas to avoid frost damage, dry off the tubers and store in cool dark conditions until spring

• Plant up pot displays with winter colour, such as heathers, cyclamen, winter pansies and skimmia

• Lift and pot up tender perennials, such as chocolate cosmos, gazanias and coleus, to protect over winter

• Plant evergreen shrubs and conifer hedges while the soil is still warm

• Remove any pot saucers and raise pots up onto feet to prevent waterlogging over winter

• Transplant deciduous shrubs that are in the wrong place or have outgrown their current position

• Wrap layers of fleece or straw around banana plants and tree ferns to protect from frost

• Collect seeds from hardy perennials, such as astrantia, achillea and red valerian, and sow straight away

• Empty spent summer pots and hanging baskets, and compost the contents

Deadheading

Deadhead dahlias - Dahlias will flower until the frosts eventually blacken the foliage so encourage your plants to produce a beautiful display of blooms by removing the old flowers as they fade. The deadheads can go in the compost bin. Other flowers to deadhead are hollyhocks, lillies, hosta, chrysanthemum Peionies and Iris.

Clean Greenhouse Glass

Wipe clean the glass and polythene of any plant-growing structures to increase light reaching plants. This is a really helpful tip. It makes a big difference in the dull winter months and will stop your plants growing tall and spindly in their search for light.

Recent events give witness to the fact th Isles admired Queen Elizabeth and felt she set a very good example to the people of this country. When a BBC reporter interviewed one of the people who had queued many hours to show her admiration for the Queen, it was said she wished all the leaders of the world were like the Queen because if they were, the world would be a far better place.

We would like to tell you of another queen of many years ago whose courage and commitment, at great risk to herself, saved her people from destruction. It was a marvellous achievement brought about in an amazing way that can give direction and certainty to our life.

The two become fast friends, but when Lyle’s existence is threatened by evil neighbour Mr. Grumps (Brett Gelman), the Primm’s must band together with Lyle’s charismatic owner, Hector P.
