Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the October Edition.... Well this month I have had the experience of becoming Acting Editor for the October edition (but with wise words of wisdom on occasions from Anne seated on her sofa (I’ll let her explain). I’m waiting to see the finished article in print before I congratulate myself. The life of masks and social distancing is here to stay for another six months at least, but life goes on even in a reduced social bubble we can still have little flavours of our traditions. In the October edition we’ve included:Halloween recipes for you and your little ones to create. Organised fireworks displays, may be cancelled, but see the article for firework deliveries to your home, Rugby Fireworks can tailor a display for any sized garden. Dare I mention Christmas? So last month, just after the magazines were delivered I went to Bridlington with my family for the Bionic Anne weekend. It was meant to be a ‘geography field trip’ to help cement the GCSE Geography work on coastal landscapes we had been with Mackenzie doing during lockdown. Plus we would get to have a mini break away before the children went back to school. Well an hour and a half into the holiday I slipped on a muddy path an broke my ankle in 4 places, rescued by coast guards, surgery to fit plates, pins & screws to fix the ankle and now I am home recovering. Catherine has been amazing and has stepped up to the challenge of putting the magazine together this month single handedly as I have been high on a cocktail of pain killers and not really ‘with it’. Remember, Remember…5th November Large organized public firework displays might be off the agenda this year but don’t worry…. Local firework experts have the answer… There is some interesting local history surrounding the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, not least that as many of you will know Guido (Guy) Fawkes met with fellow conspirators at Dunchurch before setting off to London! Over recent years Halloween has grown in popularity but 5th November is still ever popular with every city, town and village across the country celebrating with ever more exciting displays. Rugby is no different and the local display at Whinfield recreation Ground has wowed and amazed visitors for years with it’s ever developing superb displays. Unfortunately for reasons we are all very much aware of public firework displays can’t go ahead this year. However, the curators of the amazing Whinfield Recreation display, Halo FX (Rugby’s local firework company) have the answer…. I spoke to Ben, owner of Halo FX and firework expert the other day… “Over the years we have enjoyed our collective ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ in large groups at large public displays. But for obvious reasons this is not going to be possible this year. In the growing dark evenings looking forward to celebrating with some fireworks in your garden with your family might be just what we all need!” This year, Rugby company Halo FX have established a new strand to their business www.rugby-fireworks.co.uk – fireworks for you and me to use in our gardens, ordered online and delivered to your door! Improving your Health for Winter Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert Shares her thoughts on Improving your Health for Winter It would seem that this wretched virus is not going away any time soon, so we need to be vigilant and take care of ourselves and others around us. It can feel very depressing, and very worrying for those amongst us who are, or feel most vulnerable. Do not despair there are things we can do to boost our own health and therefore prepare us if we are unlucky enough to contract the virus. As I mentioned in August, we need a strong immune system to help the body fight any infection, even the common cold! More importantly now we need to take care of our mental health because these last months have been a terrible strain for all of us and so many of us feel stress about the future. I think it is worth considering that heaven forbid, we may well end up going back into lockdown. Although I believe, it will only be in certain areas not the whole country, but I do not have a crystal ball, so anything is possible. Mentally I think it is helpful to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Our social networks are key to our mental health so even though we cannot socialise in the normal way remember to keep in regular touch with your loved ones. Technology brings with it some of its own difficulties but one of the advantages of this new era is that we can now not only talk to each other but also see each other on our computer screens. It is quite miraculous and something we should be grateful for in these difficult times. I find Zoom comparatively easy to use and Skype. If you are not technically savvy; I am sure one of your younger family members or a friend will help you down-load one of these platforms. One of the keys to happiness, is the strength of our relationships so we need to nurture them. If you have lost contact with a dear friend, why not reach out. I am sure it will be appreciated, and it will help you feel better too. Last week I met a friend I had not seen for a couple of years and it was really lovely to catch up and after a short time of being together, it felt as if I had only seen her the day before! As for your physical wellbeing remember to include those foods in your diet that will help boost your immune system. Include all those brightly coloured fruits and vegetables which are rich in antioxidants and protect the body from disease. Figs are plentiful now, the ones from Turkey are delicious, and are rich in minerals; including potassium, calcium, magnesium,
iron, and copper and are a good source of vitamins A and K. They nourish and tone the intestines and act as a natural laxative because of their high fibre content. They also provide prebiotics, which help support the pre-existing good bacteria in the gut, improving digestion which is key to a strong immune system.
Vitamins and minerals There are a number of vitamins and minerals we require to maintain a healthy diet, and which can make us feel more energized and happier. These are: • • • • • • • •
Magnesium - found in spinach and other greens and nuts Iron - found in red meat, greens, eggs, and certain fruits Zinc - found in pulses, meat, and milk B vitamins - found in wholegrains, yeast, and dairy products Selenium - found in nuts, liver, and shellfish Vitamin A - found in liver, milk, cheese, and oily fish Vitamin C - found in citrus fruits and berries Vitamin E - found in vegetable oils, meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and cereals.
Tips on how to be food happy Remember, comfort food is not the answer. Eating regular meals at specific times rather than snacking improves the way your energy is released during the day. Food is a great way to improve your mood, but it is easy to become dependent on things like coffee or chocolate. Try to find alternative sources of serotonin, like socializing, playing sport, or reading a book. Or why not learn how to Zoom your friends so you can see them when you are chatting. Mummy Pizza Pies
HALLOWEEN RECIPES
Cute Mummy Puff Pastry Pizza Pies - fun Halloween food for kids - great Halloween party food These only takw 10 minutes to prepare and 15 mintues cooking time so quick and easy. Creates 6 mini pies. Ingredients 375 g ready rolled puff pastry 2 tbs tomato puree 1/4 pepper 1 spring onion 25 g mini pepperoni slices 75 g cheddar cheese + extra slices for the eyes Olives for the eyes Instructions - Preheat the oven to 200°C (Gas mark 6/390°F). Line a couple of baking trays with greaseproof/baking paper. Using a large circle cutter, cut out circles of pastry and place on your lined baking trays. Spread a thin layer of tomato puree over each circle. Prepare your toppings - de-seed and finely chop the pepper, wash and slice the spring onion, slice the pepperoni if necessary, grate the cheddar cheese. Pile the toppings in the centre of each circle, leaving a small strip around the edges clear. Cut the leftover pastry into strips around 1cm thick and drape over the toppings in a random way to create mummy like patterns, pushing the edges down so that they stick to the pastry circles. Ball up and roll out any smaller pieces of pastry to cut into more strips. Don’t worry if the strips overlap the circles once you’ve finished adding strips to each circle you can tidy them up by cutting off the excess with the same circle cutter you used to cut out the original circles. Repeat until you have mummified all of your pizzas pies! Add sliced black olives for the eyes. Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes until cooked through and golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for a few minutes. Serve immediately, or cool completely on wire racks then store in an airtight container ready to be popped in a lunch box or alternatively reheated later.
Eyeball Pops Ingredients 100g/4oz madeira cake 100g Oreo cookie 100g bar milk chocolate, melted 200g bar white chocolate, melted Smarties and icing pens, to decorate You will also need - 10 plastic forks Instructions - Break the Madeira cake and cookies into the bowl of a food processor, pour in the melted milk chocolate and whizz to combine. Tip the mixture into a bowl, then use your hands to roll into about 10 walnut-sized balls. Chill for 2 hrs until really firm. Push a skewer into each ball, then carefully spoon the white chocolate over the cake balls to completely cover. Stand the cake pops in the pumpkin, then press a Smartie onto the surface while wet. Chill again until the chocolate has set. Before serving, using the icing pens, add a pupil to each Smartie and wiggly red veins to the eyeballs.

INNOVATIVE CARE AT ST CROSS LEADS TO PATIENTS DISCHARGED THE SAME DAY AS KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY An innovative and collective approach to care has led to patients admitted for partial knee replacement surgery being successfully discharged on the same day at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. The close and collective work of Orthopaedic services, involving Surgery, Therapy and Nursing, means that more patients will reap the benefits in what is being described as the ‘way forward for surgery’ at the hospital. The key change for patients looks at a change in testing of their knee mobility post operation before they are discharged. By being able to minimising risk some patients are able to return home the same day as surgery. The approach, which very few hospitals in the country are able to boast, has led to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) improving discharge time down from three days to less than one. Consultant Nathanael Ahearn said: "We have good results for patients returning for their follow up clinics when it comes to being able to their recovery and mobility."

Brighten up your 2021! Fed up with 2020? Then it’s time to look forward to a much brighter 2021 with a fantastic Rugby Town Calendar that celebrates all things ‘Rugby’. Dazzler18 (courtesy of www.destructionarts.com) is a relative newcomer to Rugby and its world famous Art Scene. Born fully-formed in the year 2018CE, Dazzler18 has one thing on his weird and wonderfully simple mind: capturing colour in all its beautiful glory. It’s like, when he sees stuff (that to many other mortal beings might seem a bit plain, ugly or worn out) through his ‘Incredible Pair of Love Specs’ suddenly the whole darn world is revealed in a spectrum of incandescent ultracolour and deep, deep meaningfulness. Then he has to do the difficult bit of capturing what he sees on paper through the magical medium of watercolour. And he ain’t too bad at that either. In The Rugby Town Calendar 2021 Dazzler18 takes ‘Lockdown Rugby’ as his inspiration. This first foray into calendar creation contains 12 local images of well known businesses and places and includes Rugby St. Cross Hospital, Jean’s Flowers, Fast Frame, Gallacher’s of Rugby and Maia Gelato. Childrens Competition Design our Front Cover Do you have a creative child? We are once again looking for children aged 4-14 years to design our December Front Cover. All we ask is that its a Christmassy Theme and that they make it colourful and bright - oh and it needs to say The Rugby Register on it too! You can use the page opposite or a separate piece of A4 paper, making sure the design is done in portrait and not landscape. Please don’t use any glitter or neon markers as they do not scan & print well. Due to me having had the last month off sick with my broken ankle I haven’t finalised the prizes for this year but fear not - they will be announced next month and they will be amazing!

Prune climbing and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering, and tie in the stems before autumn winds cause damage. First snip off any soggy, shrivelled blooms to prevent rot setting in. But just remove the petals from any that are starting to form hips, so you can enjoy their winter display. Next pick off and bin any remaining foliage that shows signs of disease, such as black spot, mildew or rust. Also collect any infected leaves that have fallen on to the ground, as these can carry over diseases from one year to the next.

October is a beautiful month of autumnal colours and first frosts. Crisp, blue-sky days are the perfect time to tidy up and cut back in the garden. If you grow fruit and veg, there’s still plenty to harvest and store for the cold winter months ahead.
Doing this will get your rosess safely through the winter, coming back healthy, vigorous and full of flowers next year.

If you haven’t already planted some containers with spring colour, there’s still time to plant now using bedding plants such as violas and wallflowers, plus spring-flowering bulbs. Keep your pots in a sheltered spot, such as under a porch, to encourage blooms through the winter and to avoid plants rotting off in the winter wet. Cyclamen and ornamental cabbage are particularly vulnerable to rotting in damp conditions. You won’t get masses of blooms during colder weather, but any milder spells should see a good show.
The simplest method of clearing leaves off the lawn is to run over them with a lawn mower. The cutting action of the mower blades will help to shred the leaves and make them quicker to rot down. Collect leaves this way once a week - any longer and the grass will start to grow long and get harder to cut. For clearing patios, paths and other surfaces, a leaf blower is a better bet. Either blow the leaves onto the lawn for the mower to pick up or blast them on to a tarpaulin and drag them to the compost heap.
