Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the October Edition of The Rugby Register I’m delighted with the feedback from our lovely new readers in Barby, Willoughby and Houlton. We’ve had a number of emails thanking us for delivering to these new areas an you’ve already got involved by sending in events for both Community News and What’s On so a big thank you for that. It’s so nice that you all appreciate the magazine and all it has to offer. In this months edition we kick off our annual competition for a child to design the December Christmas edition front cover, so if you have a child or grandchild here in Rugby be sure to get them entering. There are some wonderful prizes up for grabs!

A little history: The magazine has been running since May 2005, a whopping 14 years ago! We started out delivering to just 1,000 homes and have continually expanded over the years and now deliver to 16,500 homes. The magazine is delivered by my own team of distributors - usually someone who lives local to your area/village.

Have a wonderful October everyone and I look forward (I think) to starting the build up to Christmas in next months edition!

Anne xx

Misty Double Glazing?

Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!

Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.

The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.

Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units

This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.

Clearly a great service!

They still are. At Anya Court, industry-leading residential, nursing and dementia care are just the beginning. We really get to know residents too – it’s how we support them to enjoy all the little things that make a big difference to their day. Just being together means everything to Bill and Milly. They’ve been married for 60 years and are still an inseparable couple at Anya Court, doing all the things they used to do at home, despite their different care needs. Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert helps us to feel 10 years younger I think that most of us would like to look and feel younger so for the next two issues I will be giving you my tips on how to hold the years back and gain that youthful vitality. We live in an ageist world, where they say that 60 is the new 40 and the pressure is on to stay young looking for as long as possible. Many women and men are turning to surgery to fulfil what I feel is an artificial ideal. I feel the aging process is horrid and as my friends know I always say, “I am not ready to be old”, but then who is ever ready. Let us not confuse getting older with the idea that being old means being sick and worthless. Aging is a part of life and it is more important to look after and value our health and live with joy and vitality than to worry too much about those extra wrinkles. I have met people in their eighties who are in robust good health, who still contribute enormously to society and look fantastic. I think the goal should be to live a healthy and fulfilled life for as long as possible. Having said this, I know many women and men, who want to look and feel as young as possible. This can only be achieved with the blessing of good health and working at looking the best we can at whatever age; to this end I have compiled the following top tips for holding back those years and looking and feeling at least ten years younger so here are the first three and look out for the final tips next month. Posture Good posture can immediately make you look ten years younger. Get those shoulders back, stand up straight and face the world with a strong stance. Don’t slouch it is so bad for your health and your mind. Let me explain beside the fact that bad posture can cause all sorts of back and neck problems; your posture also affects your overall physiology which in turn affects your emotions. Notice the posture of someone who is feeling depressed they will be looking down, their shoulders will be rounded in and they will probably be holding their body to protect themselves from the hurt and unhappiness they are feeling. The mind is incredibly powerful and we can help control those feelings by taking control of our mind and body; one aspect of this is posture. Next time you are feeling a bit glum stand up, shoulders back, look up and smile, you will immediately feel better. To enhance this little exercise, it also helps to have a little store of happy memories and think of one of those at the same time. One that always works for me is remembering the day my daughter told me she was pregnant, such a happy day. Breathing This is linked to posture because if you do not have good posture you will not be breathing properly. You will be shallow breathing and not oxygenating your blood effectively which is bad for your health. Every cell in your body needs a good supply of oxygen. Good deep breathing also helps calm the body and mind. In some cultures, breathing is thought of as

a spiritual as well as physical process – breathe is life; breathe deeply ensuring your diaphragm expands with each in breath; it will increase your vitality and improve your health. If you would like some breathing exercises, then please email me and I will forward them to you. Exercise Don’t groan; we were born to move, think about our heritage only seventy years ago most people had a much more active life. Children walked to school and housework was hard work. Women carried their shopping, and many did not have cars or indeed television. Don’t be a couch potato, go for a walk enjoy some fresh air, we live in a beautiful county enjoy it and feel healthier and look younger. As we get older the importance of exercise increases and it is never too late to start. Research suggests that even people who are in their eighties who start to exercise regularly find their health and vitality improves, remember to “Move that Body!” We do need to get our hearts pumping for half an hour at least three times each week and ideally, we should be doing some form of exercise five or six times each week – brisk walking to ensure our heart is working a little harder is a great start. There are also simple weight bearing exercises you can do at home; upper body strength as we age is essential. Are you able to get up from your chair easily? If this is becoming a problem, then I encourage you to strengthen your arm muscles. You can Join a gym, encourage friends to go for walks with you or even think about training for “Race for Life”, which is a wonderful charity event organised by Tesco Supermarket and Cancer Research. It is 5 K which is about three miles, you can run or walk, and it is a fun day. Before you start any form of exercise regime, please consult your doctor. To embrace the aging process with joy and grace is my ambition; to look and feel healthy for years to come is what I hope for and I wish you the same. Don’t be afraid of the dark How to decorate with this season’s dark colours - by Kate James When it comes to choosing wall colours, most of us will make a beeline for the lighter, more neutral colours because light colours make a room feel bigger and dark colours make a space feel smaller and more enclosed, right? Wrong! In fact, dark colours – especially moody or dramatic hues - can create sophisticated and luxurious spaces. If used on all four walls, darker colours actually perform a trick of the eye and can make a room feel bigger as the contours of the room are blurred. Finished well, dark spaces can have a cocooning effect that makes a space feel more welcoming than lighter colours may do.

Here are our 5 top tips when decorating with dark colours:

Opt for muted hues

Arguably the most important thing to consider when using dark colours is lighting. If you have a small room that has lots of natural light then you can go even darker to get the full effect of the colour. If there isn’t a lot of natural light then consider how you will light the room - floor and table lamps add to the ambience and provide softer lighting than overhead lights.

Going dark doesn’t mean going garish. Choose grown up, muted tones such as Inchrya Blue by Farrow and Ball. Sanderson’s Rainlake pr Zoffany’s Victorian Purple (which is actually a muted charcoal colour). Matt, chalky paint finishes work best so steer clear of a sheen finish.

Start with the hallway

If you’re scared of stepping into the dark side, hallways are the perfect space to give it a go as they are generally one of the smaller spaces in a home and are only a thoroughfare. An added bonus of dark colours here is no dark scuff marks on walls from shoes or bags.

Add colour

When going dark it is important to use pops of colour otherwise your scheme can look drab and depressing. Adding texture too for example in cushions and throws - also adds another dimension.

Woodwork and ceiling

Consider the colour the doors and skirting boards. Painting these white will give a strong contrast with the deep walls and reflect light. However, painting them in the same colour as the walls adds depth and drama. Although this may be a step too far for many of us, painting the ceiling in the same colour too blurs the contours between the walls and the ceiling and the space becomes even more sophisticated because there isn’t the huge contrast between them. Don’t be afraid of the dark. Instead, embrace it. Go with dark, muted colours and you’ll immediately have drama and glamour with a welcoming and cosy feel.

Photo 1

The walls, woodwork and ceiling are all painted in Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue. The romantic Herbaria wallpaper from Black Edition on one wall adds drama a nd reflect light.

Photo 2

Adding pops of colour and texture such as the dusky pink cushion and the fur throw makes the room feel incredibly welcoming. A gold lined ceiling light and table lamp reflect light and add to the ambience.

Gardening Jobs for October The nights may be drawing in during October, but pull on your woollies as there is still plenty to do in the garden this month.

P l a n ti n g Quite a few flowers can not only be planted in the autumn, but really should be planted during this time of year. Examples include peonies, as well as pansies. Hostas should be divided and replanted during this time, as well. Early Autumn is also a good time to transplant or plant irises if you’ll be using those in your landscaping. You will need a spade to chop them up into sections. Replant into soil enriched with compost or green waste.

P lo t g e V Why not start a vegetable plot in your garden. Onions and Shallots, Garlic Spring Onions, Broad Beans, Peas, Asparagus, Adelaine Carrots and even Pak Choi. Most can be planted or sown directly outdoors to ensure that your winter vegetable garden is fully stocked.

So w

in g S e e d s

You can still sow flower seeds in October, including bee-friendly and shadeloving plants. Simply make sure the ground is weed free, dig over, tread down and then then lightly rake ready for your chosen seeds, ready for spring germination Cow parsley this self-seeds readily, but you can give it a helping hand or introduce it to new areas by sowing the seeds directly now. Sweet woodruff is a shade-loving perennial, often used as a groundcover plant. Cowslips are tough little perennials that relish a partially shady spot in the garden. Fresh seeds need a cold period to germinate, so sow fresh seed now where they are to flower.

Judy: Release Date: 4 October The Plot: Winter 1968 and showbiz legend Judy Garland arrives in Swinging London to perform in a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in THE WIZARD OF OZ, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of romance seem undimmed as she embarks on a courtship with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. And yet Judy is fragile. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood; gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Will she have the strength to go on? Featuring

some of her best-known songs, including the timeless classic ‘Over the Rainbow’, JUDY celebrates the voice, the capacity for love and the sheer pizzazz of ‘the world’s greatest entertainer’.

Family Charity Evening and you’re all welcome!.... On October 18th we’re delighted to be holding a fundraising evening in support of the SRUK & RATT charities, at the Workers Club on Oliver St in Rugby. On offer is a fantastic evening of live entertainment featuring talented singers and performing acts from our local area. The event is inspired by 14 year old Isabella, an aspiring local performer herself, whose singing has been supported by RATT (Rugby Area Talent Trust) for several years. With expertise and guidance from Musical Director Duncan Arrow, Isabella has enjoyed the opportunity to perform at a wide range of regional shows and events and thanks to their great working relationship, RATT is very kindly hosting the fundraising evening. In late 2018, Isabella was diagnosed with a very rare, incurable and life altering auto-immune disease, Systemic Sclerosis with Polyarthritis and Raynauds Phenomenon, which affects around only one in a million children in her age range. Isabella now relies on a daily concoction of medication to keep her symptoms control and slow the onset of any progression of the AN EVENING EVENING OFunder MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT AN OF MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT disease. RATT provides Isabella with an invaluable outlet to pursue her love of performing, which is a great escape from the day to day reality of living with an auto immune disease. SRUK – Scleroderma & Raynauds UK, is a small but vital charity which supports research into the range of diseases which includes Systemic Sclerosis. However the rarity of such diseases means that it’s a relatively little known charity. The fundraising efforts of those families living within the umbrella that SRUK covers is therefore vital.
