THE RUGBY CHORISTERS AT BILTON GRANGE CHORAL EVENSONG The Rugby Choristers at Bilton Grange are a newly formed Choral Foundation comprising a choir of boy choristers and a choir of girl choristers. Between them they are now singing six services of Choral Evensong in the Rugby School Chapel with adult singers and in the Bilton Grange School Chapel by themselves.

Editors Letter...

Hi Everyone and welcome the November Edition...

Well what a month, I’m not sure where to start really.

The fact we have a November edition out is nothing short of a miracle. Here’s why - my amazing wing man, aka Catherine is sadly off sick at the minute, thus creating extra work for me, but work that Catherine is amazing at and I’m not, so that’s been a slight challenge. Add to that, just a week later, my iMac crashed, the hard drive had failed and crucially at the time it failed it was mid back-up to the cloud so I couldn’t use that back up.

Anyway, after many calls with Apple and me not wanting it to go to Leicester or Leamington for repair due ot their diagnostic time scales - instead I took it to guys at Apple Expert in Hillmorton. Not only did they diagnose it the same day, they even managed to retrieve all the data (phew!) and get me back up and running within a week. It was the longest week ever but they truly were amazing and I will be forever grateful to them for saving my business. So the moral of the story is have at least 2 back ups and an alternative machine you can work from if yours crashes. This iMac is less than 3 years old so I really didn’t expect the hard drive to fail. Anyway, just as

I got it back and could work again we had a short holiday to Gran Canaria booked so I worked days & night up until we went and just chilled while away.

Then low and behold I take ill on the way home and test positive for Covid when I get home.

Another shout out and thank you goes to my wonderful local printer John Good Limited who have again shown support and patience in my hour of need. Check out their advert on p17, they really are a wonderful bunch.

I hope you enjoy this magazine, which is brought to you in rapid time, with no sleep, feeling dreadful and flying solo - so please forgive any small anomalies along the way. To be fair, I’m just amazed I’ve got this far!

“What must I do to be saved?”

This phrase, often heard in modern times, was first recorded over 2000 years ago by a Greek doctor. He was travelling with friends in Asia Minor . They had been thrown in prison for preaching the Gospel. A Roman soldier was the jailer and is depicted in this painting of the scene just after an earthquake ruined the jail in Philippi ! There we see the jailer asking the question! Why? The earthquake had released all the prisoners in the jail and the soldier anticipated most, if not all, of the prisoners would have escaped.. He knew the penalty for any soldier who lost his prisoners was death and was about to kill himself when one of the prisoners called out, “Do yourself no harm: for we are all here.”

You can hardly imagine the wave of relief that swept over the jailer. He rushed to meet the prisoner that had just spoken and immediately recognised him as the man who had been preaching the way to salvation in the city. It is apparent he had spent some time listening to the preaching and been so impressed with the message he heard that he fell on his knees before the Apostle Paul and asked him, “What must I do to be saved?”

children’s entertainment, Santa’s Grotto, street food, stalls, plus a spectacular firework display that will bring the event to a close.

Tutti Fruiti Christmas Cake Recipe Now it IS only just November but Christmas Cakes are best made early; at least 4 weeks in advance is best. This recipe has appeared in the magazine before, but we have great feedback so I make no apologies for repeating it. This is a recipe I have been using for years and no, I’m not a baker by any stretch of the imagination but, it’s a recipe a friend gave to me years ago and I've always stuck with it. I’m not sure where it came from but it is a delivious, rich, fruity cake.

Ingredients

1lb Currants (450g) 6oz Sultanas (175g) 6oz Raisins (175g) 2oz Glace Cherries, rinsed and finely chopped (50g) 2oz Mixed Peel, finely chopped (50g) 3 Tblsp Brandy (for now...)

8oz Plain Flour (225g) (Gluten Free flour if needed) 1/2 Tsp Salt 1/4 Tsp Freshly Grated Nutmeg 1/2 Tsp Mixed Spice 2oz Almonds, chopped (50g), skins can be left on 8oz Soft Brown Sugar (225g) 1 Dessert spoon Black Treacle 8oz Unsalted Butter (225g) 4 Eggs Grated Peel of 1 lemon & 1 orange

Method The night before you make the cake place all the dried fruit & peel in a bowl and mix in the Brandy. Cover the bowl with a cloth and leave to soak for at least 12 hours.

Pre-heat the oven to Gas Mark 1, 275F (140C) 8” round cake tin or 7” square tin, greased & lined with greaseproof paper.

Sieve the flour, salt & spices into a large mixing bowl and in a separate bowl cream the butter & sugar together until light and fluffy (this is the most important part of the cake, so don’t cut any corners!)

Next beat the eggs, then a tablespoon at a time add them to the creamed mixture, beating thoroughly after each addition, add a little of the flour if it starts to curdle.

When all the egg has been added, fold in the flour & spices (fold DON’T BEAT!) Now stir in the fruit & peel that has been soaking, the treacle, the cherries and the grated lemon & orange peel.

Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin & spread it out evenly with the back of a spoon - if you are not going to ice your cake you could arrange some blanched almonds over the surface at this stage - but do it lightly or they’ll disappear into the cake forever!

Tie a band of brown paper around the outside of the tin & cover the top of the cake with a double sheet of greaseproof paper (put a hole in the middle of the greaseproof paper first about the size of a 50p piece.

Bake on the lower shelf of the oven for 31/2 to 33/4 hrs and don’t open the door to peek until at least 3 hrs has passed.

When the cake is cold wrap it well in double greaseproof paper & store in an airtight container.

Feed the cake at odd intervals with Brandy throughout the storage time. To do this, strip off the lining papers, make a few holes in the top with a thin darning needle or skewer and pour a few teaspoons of Brandy into the cake.

Repeat this each week in the lead up to Christmas. Christmas day - slice up and enjoy!

November Gardening Tasks Winter is coming. Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can’t, it is worth wrapping plants or pots. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

Wild Garlic A popular springtime treat for foragers, the incredible flavours offered by wild garlic has recently brought this plant into the limelight. From the bulbs and stems to the leaves and flowers, almost every part of a wild garlic plant is edible, making it an extremely useful crop to grow in your garden. While annual garlic is a popular sight in gardens and allotments, wild garlic isn’t seen quite as much. Instead, those who want to enjoy its punchy, garlicky flavour tend to forage for the plant in woodland areas.

Fortunately, even if you don’t have access to a truly wild garlic patch, it’s extremely easy to grow it yourself at home, giving you your own personal supply to forage from each spring.

Simply sow seeds outside from now until June - remember. Wild garlic is a perennial – plant it once and it will return each year, even bigger and better than it was the previous year. Wild garlic will thrive in the parts of your garden where other plants struggle. Placing it in a location with partial to full shade will give you the most vigorous plants. The amount of shade that you give your plants is important – don’t forget that wild garlic grows in deep and dark woodland spots. The more shade that it has, the longer your growing season will be!.

Weeding Weeds will continue to grow during a mild winter. Remember, when your spring flowering bulbs and border plants start to flower, the borders will be harder (more time consuming) to weed. It makes sense to keep them tidy before spring.

Garden Pond Maintenance

Small ponds will need cleaning every 5 years whereas larger ponds are every 10 years. The best time to clean ponds is in late autumn when many creatures are less active. Below are some tips on general garden pond care: Start by preparing a holding tank in a shady spot for fish and deep water plants; use some pond water in the tank, unless it is particularly cloudy.

Marginal (water’s edge) plants will survive out of the pond as long as they are kept moist and shaded. As the water level falls, remove fish/large pond creatures as they become visible along with plants placing them in a holding tank.

Take the opportunity to re-pot or divide plants if necessary. Place decaying plant material on the side of the pond, so any smaller creatures hidden away can return to the pond. Scoop up the silt from the base. You can use this on your flower borders, but remember to retain a little to add back to the pond as it will help re-establish tiny organisms. Clean the liner with a scrubbing brush and water, bailing the dirty water out with a bucket. Return the saved silt and any saved pond water. Next, refill with water (rain water if possible), positioning pond plants as you go. Finish by returning the fish and any other creatures. After cleaning out the pond, it can take several months or years to return to a balanced ecosystem.

Recycle your pumpkin Pumpkins are 100% compostable.

Here are our top tips.

Without a compost bin 1. Smash the pumpkin into pieces or use a spade to chop it up.

2. Find a place to dig a hole in your garden big enough for the pieces.

3. Place pumpkin into the hole and cover with soil. Nature will take over and rot it down nicely, fertilising the soil.

3. The pumpkin has a high water content so you will need to balance this out with some dry materials.
