Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the November Edition.... Well that was a challenging month! My husband and youngest daughter got Covid-19 and both were quite ill with it, my husband more so as he also developed a chest infection too which took a couple of courses of antibiotics to clear. He’s on the mend now though thankfully, and my daughter is back at school. At the same time my other daughter got a bad cold that triggered her asthma, which was worse than it had been for years, and needed additional medication over & above the inhalers. All this definitely made me even more careful and a little bit more paranoid about getting the dreaded virus too. When will it all end?

With the support of Catherine (again!) and some long days we have managed to still get this edition together, even after my Florence Nightingale duties and Catherine not being able to work with me for 10 days (as a precaution). It’s been a challenge but here we are.

Most of my patients have been suffering for a long period of time and are very vulnerable as often they have been offered unqualified miracle solutions that simply don’t work. The work of a Trichologist is vary varied it can be treating scalp conditions such as Psoriasis one day and working with male or female pattern hair loss the next. Hair loss conditions tend to fall into 4 categories, - Telogen Effluvium - an imbalance to the growth cycle causing lots of hair shedding and thinning. - Androgenetic Alopecia, Male or Female Pattern - Autoimmune Conditions, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis - Scarring Autoimmune Conditions, Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia, Lichen Planopilaris. Tutti Fruiti Christmas Cake Recipe Now it IS only just November but Christmas Cakes are best made early. This has appeared in the magazine before, but we do have great feedback so I make no apologises for repeating this popular cake. This is a recipe I HAVE been USING for years and no, I’m not a baker by any stretch of the imagination but it’s a recipe a friend gave to me years ago and I've always stuck with it.

Ingredients 1lb Currants (450g) 6oz Sultanas (175g) 6oz Raisins (175g) 2oz Glace Cherries, rinsed and finely chopped (50g) 2oz Mixed Peel, finely chopped (50g) 3 Tblsp Brandy (for now...) 8oz Plain Flour (225g) (Gluten Free flour if needed) 1/2 Tsp Salt 1/4 Tsp Freshly Grated Nutmeg 1/2 Tsp Mixed Spice 2oz Almonds, chopped (50g), skins can be left on 8oz Soft Brown Sugar (225g) 1 Dessert spoon Black Treacle 8oz Unsalted Butter (225g) 4 Eggs Grated Peel of 1 lemon & 1 orange

Method The night before you make the cake place all the dried fruit & peel in a bowl and mix in the Brandy. Cover the bowl with a cloth and leave to soak for at least 12 hours. Pre-heat the oven to Gas Mark 1, 275F (140C) 8” round cake tin or 7” square tin, greased & lined with greaseproof paper. Sieve the flour, salt & spices into a large mixing bowl and in a separate bowl cream the butter & sugar together until light and fluffy (this is the most important part of the cake, so don’t cut any corners!) Next beat the eggs, then a tablespoon at a time add them to the creamed mixture, beating thoroughly after each addition, add a little of the flour if it starts to curdle. When all the egg has been added, fold in the flour & spices (fold DON’T BEAT!) Now stir in the fruit & peel that has been soaking, the treacle, the cherries and the grated lemon & orange peel. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin & spread it out evenly with the back of a spoon - if you are not going to ice your cake you could arrange some blanched almonds over the surface at this stage - but do it lightly or they’ll disappear into the cake forever! Tie a band of brown paper around the outside of the tin & cover the top of the cake with a double sheet of greaseproof paper (put a hole in the middle of the greaseproof paper first about the size of a 50p piece. Bake on the lower shelf of the oven for 31/2 to 33/4 hrs and don’t open the door to peek until at least 3 hrs has passed. When the cake is cold wrap it well in double greaseproof paper & store in an airtight container. Feed the cake at odd intervals with Brandy throughout the storage time. To do this, strip off the lining papers, make a few holes in the top with a thin darning needle or skewer and pour a few teaspoons of Brandy into the cake. Repeat this each week in the lead up to Christmas. Christmas day - slice up and enjoy!

Marcus’ Marathon for Macmillan On Sunday 3rd October 2021 around 40,000 runners descended on London for the 26.2 mile run. Marcus (one of Roger Smith Installations Directors) was one of them! His plan had been to run the marathon in 2020. After hours and hours and many, many miles of training, Marcus sadly had an injury (a stress fracture of the hip!) that would not allow him to complete the marathon as planned. Aswell as Covid Lockdown that stopped the marathon for everyone. This did mean he managed to defer his place to this year but also meant that he had to begin his training all over again. As you can imagine running a marathon takes a huge amount of commitment and dedication and Marcus was up and out for a run at 5.30am before a full days work. (Definitely not something many of us would want to do!) and followed a training plan to be marathon ready. It was all, of course for a fantastic cause; Macmillan Cancer support. They have been supporting Marcus’ best buddy Dave Lowe (Scally) who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Macmillan have been supporting Scally through the whole process and have helped him get through the toughest times. Marcus ran the marathon in a time of 4 hours 27 minutes. An amazing achievement to add to his list of adventures. Well done Marcus! We’re now all wondering what’s next! NOVEMBER GARDENING TASKS We’ve enjoyed some amazing late autumn weather recently and hopefully there will be more mild weather so we can enjoy our outdoors. The winter months are quiet in the garden and mostly a time to catch up, clear up and tackle the weeds.

Lawn Care Give grass a light trim with the lawn mower if weather conditions are still mild and the grass is still growing. Continue to remove any fallen leaves that have blown onto the lawn. A handy piece of equipment to have for removing leaves (plus other garden debris) from the lawn and paths is an electric garden blower and vacuum. Gather all the fallen leaves in your garden to create your own leaf mould, the equivalent of garden gold-dust. Use environmentally-friendly packs of biodegradable leaf sacks. Use an aerator for spiking lawns and brush horticultural grit into the holes to improve drainage. Keep off the lawn if soil conditions are wet or frosty to avoid damaging the grass.

Autumn Tulip Planting November is the time for planting Tulips. The correct planting depth is very important to ensure the bulb flowers. One of the most common reasons why a bulb fails to flower is that it was planted too shallow and they will not flower after year one. An easy rule of thumb is plant the bulb 3 times it’s own depth and if unsure, plant deeper, and not shallow.

Pruning Roses From now until early winter is a good time to prune roses especially climbing roses. This is a general prune reducing the size of the shrub by about a third to prevent wind rock. Wind rock is caused by the longer stems of the rose being caught by the wind, causing the plant to rock or move around in the wind, which in turn loosens its footing and roots. Over time, the entry point of the trunk into the soil widens and allows water and ice in thus damaging the plant and its roots.
