Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the November Edition of The Rugby Register So let’s start on a lovely, heart warming positive this month...... In last month’s edition we featured an article about a Fundraiser for Scleroderma & Raynaud’s UK. It was a Variety evening of music & entertainment jointly organised by Kerstin Awang (you may know her as Zumba with Kerstin!) The evening was about Kerstin’s daughter who, sadly has been diagnosed with this rare, incurable disease. Well, a reader, who also has the rare condition got in touch with Kerstin and they are meeting up. How wonderful that the magazine has brought the two together in their time of need. Lovely happenings like this warm my heart and make my job worthwhile.
In this edition you will find a double page spread promoting our wonderful town centre and some of the lovely independent business that we have. Please take time to read it and consider them when organising your Christmas Shopping trips. We have a host of great shops & services in our town centre but they are reliant on you using them. As promised last month I continue with my top tips on how to look and feel ten years younger. Remember good health is really the most precious thing and as such we must learn to take responsibility for our own health. Hopefully if you follow some of my tips you will improve your health and vitality. Avoid Inflammation Inflammation is an immunological defence mechanism, which generally fends off various disease-causing bacteria, viruses and parasites. Today scientists are now linking this immune response to many diseases, including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis and cancer. Normally initial inflammation marshals a defensive attack that lays waste to any unwanted invader and any tissue it may have infected and then the process subsides, and healing begins. What scientists have discovered is that sometimes this process does not shut down and parts of the body can maintain this inflammatory response. It has recently been established that inflammation is not only associated with a wide range of diseases but has a strong correlation with aging; aging skin under the microscope always shows signs of inflammation. If we can reduce the damaging effects of inflammation, we can hold back the aging process. Skin our largest organ is continually assaulted from inside and out by substances that cause inflammation: Sun exposure, smoking, air pollution, harsh soaps and skin care products, internal disease, stress, lack of sleep, sugar consumption, dehydration and more. The main things we can do to avoid inflammation are to ensure our diet is low in saturated fats, red meat, dairy products, and processed foods. We need a diet high in fish and vegetable oils, and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables; also, regular exercise! We do need to protect our bodies with antioxidants, and this is my next tip. The Importance of Antioxidants Antioxidants are essential to protect our bodies from inflammation and free radical damage. What creates free radical damage in the body? Free radicals are an atom or group of atoms that are high-energy unstable particles that damage cells. Without going into complicated detail this breakdown is in part responsible for free radical damage and one aspect of this is the breakdown of collagen in our skin (the elasticity) causing us to physically age faster. Well we cannot avoid breathing so we need to protect ourselves as much as possible from free radicals.

Nutrition Eat moderately on a regular basis always have a good breakfast; it is the most important meal of the day. Overeating stresses the body and being overweight or obese is bad for your health and very aging. Make good food choices; eat the best quality food you can afford. I recommend organic food whenever possible and eat food which is locally produced. Let us support our local farmers and protect the environment at the same time. Why should we have to buy carrots and beans and apples, etc, that have travelled half-way around the world and probably been stored for months? Support your local butcher and ask where his meat comes from, if we ask questions food quality will improve. I am sure you will enjoy the taste and quality of organic meat and other foods. Enjoy Life and Avoid Stress Finally, it is so important to enjoy your life and avoid stress. You will feel and look years younger and more vibrant if you find pleasure in most aspects of your life. Think of your cup as being half full not half empty; be grateful because gratitude brings its own joy. Give of yourself freely and without looking for a return. The love we give is always returned in abundance if it is given unconditionally. As the saying goes – Smile and the world smiles with you. Smiling is a great stress buster and can easily take ten years off your looks. To embrace the aging process with joy and grace is my ambition; to look and feel healthy for years to come is what I hope for and I wish you the same. Not only can regular gardening reduce mental health problems like depression and anxiety, but it can also reduce stress and combat high blood pressure, as well as improving overall physical fitness.

Why not start a vegetable plot its not too late to start. Vegetables do grow outdoors in winter. Most winter vegetable plants are fully hardy and will cope well with cold winter weather, but if hard frosts threaten then you can always throw some fleece across them to provide some extra protection. The following vegetables can be planted or sown directly outdoors to ensure that your winter vegetable garden is fully stocked. Onions and Shallots, Garlic, Spring Onions, Perpetual Spinach, Broad Beans, Peas, Asparagus,
Tulips can be planted as late as November. It is more likely a cold snap will occur in this period which helps to eradicated diseases in the soil which could infect the Tulip bulbs. There is also disease particular to Tulips called Tulip fire and planting late helps to reduce the likelihood of this occurring.

Tulips like well drained soil in a sunny spot, if standing in a lot of winter wet this can tend to make the bulbs rot. This also means if we have a weather forecast which suggests biblical quantities of rain and your plot tends to hold water, delay planting until the forecast and weather improve.

The winter months means you need to look after our feathered garden visitors. Make sure your bird table is well stocked, put out kitchen scraps, grated cheese, bread crumbs, sultanas, oatmeal, apples, pears and other soft fruit from the garden. Alternatively you can buy ready made seed mixes, fat balls and live meal worms. Hang pieces of unsalted bacon from trees to provide an energy laden treat. The greater the variety of foods you supply, the greater the variety of birds you will see.

Run, Walk or Jog - it’s taking part that counts... The first parkrun took place in 2004 in Busy Park in Teddington and had 13 runners. There are now parkrun events each Saturday and Sunday in 20 countries all around the world, with over 3 million runners and counting. Rugby parkrun is nearly 3 years old and takes place every Saturday morning at 9am at Whinfield recreation ground. Whether you are a regular runner or someone who is just starting out, everyone is welcome. GEC rec junior parkrun is 6 months old, takes place every Sunday morning at 9am at GEC recreational ground and is for children aged 4 to 14 years old. parkrun is such a simple concept: turn up every Saturday and walk, jog or run 5k, or if you’re a junior then 2k every Sunday. You can also volunteer in numerous different roles too! It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part. parkrun is all about inclusiveness and well-being. We want as many people as possible to feel part of a real local community brought together by our events, as well as our global parkrun family. The format of parkrun is simple: register once, print your barcode, then turn up and take part wherever you want, whenever you want. All events are organised by a group of wonderful, dedicated, local volunteers – our hi-vis heroes! It is because of the that all runs remain entirely free. SEASONAL RECIPE I know it’s only just November but Christmas Cakes are best made early and as I’ve had lots of requests for a repeat of my Christmas Cake recipe I make no apologies for this early mention of Christmas! This is a recipe I’ve been doing for years and no, I’m not a baker by any stretch of the imagination but it’s a recipe a friend gave to me years ago and I’ve always stuck with it.
Ingredients

1lb Currants (450g) 6oz Sultanas (175g) 6oz Raisins (175g) 2oz Glace Cherries, rinsed and finely chopped (50g) 2oz Mixed Peel, finely chopped (50g) 3 Tblsp Brandy (for now...) 8oz Plain Flour (225g) (Gluten Free flour if needed) 1/2 Tsp Salt 1/4 Tsp Freshly Grated Nutmeg 1/2 Tsp Mixed Spice 2oz Almonds, chopped (50g), skins can be left on 8oz Soft Brown Sugar (225g) 1 Dessert spoon Black Treacle 8oz Unsalted Butter (225g) 4 Eggs Grated Peel of 1 lemon Grated peel of 1 orange.
Method The night before you make the cake place all the dried fruit & peel in a bowl and mix in the Brandy. Cover the bowl with a cloth and leave to soak for at least 12 hours. Pre-heat the oven to Gas Mark 1, 275F (140C) 8” round cake tin or 7” square tin, greased & lined with greaseproof paper. Sieve the flour, salt & spices into a large mixing bowl and in a separate bowl cream the butter & sugar together until light and fluffy (this is the most important part of the cake, so don’t cut any corners!) Next beat the eggs, then a tablespoon at a time add them to the creamed mixture, beating thoroughly after each addition, add a little of the flour if it starts to curdle. When all the egg has been added, fold in the flour & spices (fold DON’T BEAT!) Now stir in the fruit & peel that has been soaking, the treacle, the cherries and the grated lemon & orange peel. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin & spread it out evenly with the back of a spoon - if you are not going to ice your cake you could arrange some blanched almonds over the surface at this stage - but do it lightly or they’ll disappear into the cake forever! Tie a band of brown paper around the outside of the tin & cover the top of the cake with a double sheet of greaseproof paper (put a hole in the middle of the greaseproof paper first about the size of a 50p piece. Bake on the lower shelf of the oven for 41/2 to 43/4 hrs and don’t open the door to peek until at least 4 hrs has passed. When the cake is cold wrap it well in double greaseproof paper & store in an airtight container. Feed the cake at odd intervals with Brandy throughout the storage time. To do this, strip off the lining papers, make a few holes in the top with a thin darning needle or skewer and pour a few teaspoons of Brandy into the cake. Repeat this each week in the lead up to Christmas. Christmas day - slice up and enjoy!

THE CHANGING FACE OF GENERAL PRACTICE Ajit Barot and Barrie Bemand are members of the Rugby Health & Care Improvement Forum (RHCIF), a small group of retired NHS & Social Servies professionals. They spread information about the NHS and Social Care and the need for long term investment & planning to our MP, leaders of the local NHS, other politicians and the press. Their aim is to support our NHS & Socail Care and try to keep the general public informed. Those of us who have grown up with General Practice since the inception of the NHS in 1948 will have seen many changes to the way our care has been provided over the years. Groups of doctors forming partnerships, buying their premises, employing staff and providing 24 hour care, each with their list of patients, is no longer becoming the norm. More and more practices are being run as businesses with conglomerates frequently owning several surgeries and employing staff, including the doctors, to work in them. In part this has been brought about by young doctors going into general practice no longer wishing to work full-time as partners, but instead opting for salaried work with fixed hours, frequently on a part-time basis. The rationale being that they can then have a family life and not be tied to the surgery. Currently there is a major shortage of general practitioners and one of the ways this is being addressed is for practices to employ other trained staff such as nurse practitioners, clinical assistants and clinical pharmacists, assuming sufficient numbers can be found, to deal with patients with more straightforward problems. Telephone and on-line consultations are also thought to save GP time. This would allow the GPs to treat patients with more complex problems. On the whole these are the elderly with multiple ailments and taking multiple medications. The downside of this is that inevitably the GP workload would become far more stressful and could lead to burnout and early retirement, thus compounding the problem. In patient satisfaction surveys General Practice has always rated highly. However in recent years satisfaction levels have begun to fall. Probably the main reason for this is the other change noticed by patients, the perceived increased difficulty in getting an appointment with a GP. This is partly down to the shortage of GPs, as mentioned above, and partly to the greatly increased pressure on General Practice due to population growth, especially among the elderly. Practice workload has increased enormously in the past few years. To cope with this practices have brought in new appointment systems in an attempt to cope, such as the Advanced Access system now used by many practices, which is meant to enable patients to obtain an appointment with a doctor (not necessarily the doctor of their choice) on the day of their request, either by phoning the surgery first thing in the morning, or actually going along to the surgery. In the old days, prior to appointment systems, patients used to have to queue at the surgery door before it opened in order to be seen. To some extent this appears to be returning. Although, for those patients with complex medical problems, continuity of care – seeing their ‘own’ GP – is very important, it would appear that this will become increasingly difficult. The current view is that instant access is the goal and ‘continuity of care’ – seeing your own doctor – ‘is no longer important’. Whether one welcomes the changes or fears them, it would appear that change is inevitable and patients will have to learn to ‘play the system’ as we have always managed to do over the years.
