Hi Everyone and welcome the May Edition...
Its the magazines’ birthday this month. A whopping 18 years ago the first ever Rugby Register and On Your Doorstep magazine was published and delivered to just 500 homes each. The 2 magazines then merged to become The Rugby Register and is now delivered to 17,000 homes across the town and villages. I am very proud of the magazine, and that everything we publish is locally driven, sourced and relevant. We don’t ‘buy in’ articles from national companies like other magazines do. We fully believe in our strapline of ‘Bringing local businesses and local people together’ and work hard every month to bring you businesses, events, articles and business spotlights that we know you enjoy and benefit from.
By reading, using and supporting the magazine and its content you are helping our economy by keeping everything local, so well done and thank you on behalf of myself and all our advertisers.
Wishing you all a wonderful bank holiday filled May! Anne xx

Rugby Guttering & Fascia
Have you thought about the outside of your home now that the weather is improving, and we head towards the summer?
Rugby Guttering & Fascia, now in their 14th year offer several cost-effective services:
From cleaning out & repairing broken guttering joints, to cleaning conservatories & jet washing, decking, patios, paths & driveways, they really do make a big difference to your outside space. The SKYVAC gutter clearing system can reach up to 3/4 storey houses with the added benefit of having cameras fitted to them to avoiding all the dangers that come with being 3/4 storeys up on a ladder! Guttering can get filled and blocked with moss, autumn leaves & twigs if you have trees nearby and can put pressure on the guttering joints causing leaks and further damage if not cleared regularly. Brian suggests annually, and with prices starting from just £40 for a terraced house it’s well worth the investment to keep your gutters in good working order.
Whether you need a conservatory, patio or driveway clean, their unique high powered flat surface jet washer gives a superb deep clean with a fraction of the usual mess a traditional jet wash causes. The results are superb, and it beats doing it yourself and making more mess to clear up. Prices start at just £80.
What our customers say...
Often customers choose a ‘Platinum Clean’, this is a comprehensive clean of all your plastics/pvc including window frames, & sills, garage door, soffits, fascias, guttering and even the gas & electric boxes if you have them, making your home spotless on the outside and looking great in time for the summer.
When Brian started the business, he wanted to offer a professional, friendly service with competitive rates and 14 years on he still works to the same principals. His numerous positive reviews on Google and Facebook show just how customer focussed Brian and his team are and how much they are used time and time again by the same happy customers.
Why not give Brian a call for a free no obligation quote, some honest suggestions of what would be most cost effective for you together with fantastic customer service, and if you have already had a price from elsewhere, he will beat any like for like quote.
Go on, spruce up your outside ready or the summer months!

Be realistic:-
Dreaming is the start of any good renovation, but to have the job done properly, you have to be realistic about what you can accomplish based on your budget
1) Planning is the first part?
What is your budget for the works? And is it realistic?
Get quotes, not Estimates and a detailed break down one each quote.
Do you need to change any electrics or plumbing?
If it is outdoor works they may be delays due to bad weather in the winter.
Do you need to speak with council planning Department.
Ask the tradesperson, at the time of giving a quote, if his work needs to be submitted to building control.
How long will it take to complete the work?
Get every little detail of the home renovation in writing from the contractor, before you agree.
2) Whhat is the order of the Works?
Electricians, Plumbers, Gas Engineer these trades will need to access into walls floorboards and ceilings.
Carpenters, for alterations for moving timber frames replacing floor boards.
Plaster's for walls and ceilings and making good after electrician, plumber and carpenter.
Kitchen, bathroom fitters.
Tiler in kitchens bathrooms and under floor heating
Painter/Decorator.
Carpet Layer.
3) Do the Contractors belong to a Trade Body?
Trade bodies are there to help the public from rogue traders.
KARL WARD
Ask the tradeperson to what trade body they belong too?
4) Are They Local to You?
Look for a local number.
Check their address.

May Gardening Tasks
The warmer months are the ideal time to get some key jobs done outside, including planting, pruning, cleaning and sowing. With so much to do before summer arrives, it’s important to get stuck in right away to give your garden a much-needed boost ahead of peak growing season. Plants are not the only part of your garden to focus on this month, in fact, garden furniture and outdoor features should be at the top of your list this May.
Sweet Peas
Plant out sweet peas this month. They are half hardy, and will withstand a good degree of cold, but it is essential plants are hardened off before planting out. Sweet peas look just great in the border climbing up an obelisk or suitable support and add colour, height and best of all scent. Sweet peas are an effort, but long flowering with regular dead heading I have picked Sweet peas in late October so you get your money’s worth. But this can only happen if you remember to keep picking the flowers throughout, they require time and effort throughout the growing season but you will be rewarded with masses of blooms and scent.
Sweet peas like moisture and one tip is to line the trench with newspaper to add extra moisture retention. If sweet peas get too dry, they are prone to mildew.
Train Climbing Plants
Climbing plants will put on spurts of growth in the warmer weather, and the new growth has to be tied in. This supports the plant and enables you to guide the plant to grow where you want it to and not where it may want to go. It is a wild generalisation, but many climbing plants are a bit of a thug, fast growing and clinging to anything around, including neighbouring plants. It is good to train the climbing plants and tie it in otherwise you can find a smaller plant next to the climber gets tangled up and their growth is restricted by shoots from the climber.
Stake Peonies
Nearly all peonies benefit from staking, or placing metal or wooden peony supports around the plant. Stake the peonies early in their growing season as the shoots begin to emerge as it can be more challenging to stake peonies later on without damaging the foliage.

Films Coming to the Cinema during May
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 : Release Date: 3 May The Plot: In Marvel Studios “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
Fast X: Release Date: 21 May The Plot: Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious Saga, launches the final chapters. Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything—and everyone—that Dom loves, forever. In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew took out nefarious Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes and decapitated his empire on a bridge
in Rio De Janeiro. What they didn’t know was that Reyes’ son, Dante (Aquaman’s Jason Momoa), witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price. Dante’s plot will scatter Dom’s family from Los Angeles to the catacombs of Rome, from Brazil to London and from Portugal to Antarctica. New allies will be forged and old enemies will resurface. But everything changes when Dom discovers that his own 8-year-old son (Leo Abelo Perry, Blackish) is the ultimate target of Dante’s vengeance.

A group of writers who meet in a Rugby cafe have banded together to publish their own poetry book.
“Press Pause: Relax with a Poem” is a 250-page book featuring more than 20 poets from the Rugby area. They all belong to the Rugby Cafe Writers, a group formed five years ago by the romantic novelist Theresa Le Flem. They are based at the Thirteen Bells Cafe inside St Andrew’s Church, Rugby and meet there every fortnight. The book, available for £6 from Amazon, is a collection of poems about remarkable people, nature, places, the past and even some quirky poems about favourite pets. There is also an ebook and hardback edition available.
“We’re delighted to have published our new book. It’s a dream come true,” said John Howes of the Rugby Cafe Writers.
“There are some really talented writers in our group and some have never had their work published before. It is wonderful they now have a chance to get their work out to the public.”
The idea behind the book was to offer easy-to-read poems which the casual reader could relax with for a few minutes over a cup of tea of coffee.
The Cafe Writers’ group, which has about 50 members, is open to anyone who is interested in writing or books.
Beginners are always welcome and find a supportive atmosphere for their work.
“At each meeting, we either have a discussion about writing skills, or a writing challenge - perhaps a title we have to work with, or a topic, or coming up with something in a genre such as horror, comedy or romance,” said John.
The book will be on sale at the Saturday Singing Festivals at St Andrew’s Church which take place on the second Saturday of each month from 10.30am.
This is the second anthology published by the Rugby Cafe Writers. The first, Get to the Point, came out in 2019 and features a selection of short stories, memoir and poetry.

Delicious Seasonal Recipes
Twice Baked Cheese Souffle
Twice baked cheese soufflé rich with a mixture of comte and gruyere cheese. A delicious starter or light lunch main course, serve with a salad.
Prep Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 40 mins Total Time: 1 hr 10 mins Servings: 6 servings Calories: 322kcal
Ingredients
Preparing the ramekins - ▢20 g butter
Souffle
300 ml whole milk
1 small onion (peeled and cut in half)
1 bay leaf
40 g butter
40 g plain flour
2 tsp Dijon mustard
50 g Comte cheese (grated)
50 g Gruyere cheese (grated)
3 large eggs (yolk and white separated)
1 tbsp chopped chives
grating fresh nutmeg
salt and pepper
Second bake
25 g Comte cheese
25 g Gruyere cheese
6 tbsp double cream
Method
Preparing the ramekins - Generously butter the inside of 6 ramekin dishes, ensuring you take the butter right up the sides of each dish. Place a small round disc of grease-proof paper on the base on each ramekin. Place the dishes on a baking tray and set aside.
Souffle - Pour the milk into a medium sized saucepan and add the onion and bay leaf which will flavour the milk. Place over a low/medium heat and bring the milk to a gently simmer, take care not to boil the milk. Cook for minutes to allow the flavours to infuse the milk. Move from the heat and using a sieve strain the milk into a measuring jug and set aside. To make the bechamel base sauce, melt the butter in a non-stick saucepan over a medium heat. Add the flour and stir well to combine to a roux. Gently cook the flour for 5 minutes to get rid of the raw taste of the flour, stirring continuously.
Gradually add 250ml of the warm milk into the roux and discard any excess milk. Once you have added the milk bring it to the boil and keep stirring to avoid it sticking. Add the mustard and the cheese to the sauce, which should be thick and very smooth. Once the cheese has melted add the chives, a grating of nutmeg and season to taste with salt and pepper. Place the sauce mixture into a large bowl and allow to cool for 5-10 minutes. Then beat in the egg yolks and mix until thoroughly combined. If you add the egg yolks when the sauce is too hot they will only cook in the sauce!
In a separate bowl whisk up the egg whites until you have stiff peaks. Add a large spoon of the egg whites into the cheese sauce and mix well to combine. Then add the remaining egg whites to the bowl and gently fold the egg whites through the cheese sauce. Take care not to beat the eggs, you want to keep the light airiness of the egg white, this will give you lighter soufflés.
Gently spoon the mixture evenly between the 6 ramekins. Place in a pre-heated oven at 200C for 18-20 minutes. Do not open the oven during cooking as this will only cause the soufflés to deflate. After 18-20 minutes the soufflés will have risen and should be golden on top. Remove from the oven and place the ramekins onto a cooling rack. Leave the soufflés to cool completely. Once cool, run a sharp knife around the sides of the ramekin. Gently turn the soufflés out onto your hand. Place the soufflés top side down on a clean baking sheet that has been lined with more grease-proof paper. The flat bottoms of the soufflés should now be facing upwards so remove the discs of paper from the bottom of each soufflé.
Second bake - Mix together the Comte and Gruyere cheese for the topping and spread equally over each of the 6 soufflés. Pour a tablespoon of double cream over each soufflé. Place the soufflés back into the oven for a further 10-12 minutes at 200C. Remove once the cheese has melted and has started to bubble. Serve immediately.
