Editors Letter... Hi Everyone and welcome the May Edition...

Over Easter we managed to finaly get away. Morocco for 6 days, and it was amazing. Even with my bad ankle we managed to take a Hot Air Balloon flight at sunrise and also quad biking in the desert. Both were fantastic fun and wonderful to see the children finally enjoying a holiday. Booking a hotel with a water park onsite was a stroke of genius too as it kept them entertained and I could chill on a sun lounger with a book - there was no way I was risking this ankle in the water park. Experiencing the calm serenity of Morocco makes you take stock and a good reminder

that life doesn’t have to be lived at a million miles an hour. It was a good to slow down and enjoy each day. I hope you enjoy this months edition and if you are going on holiday abroad be sure to read the ‘Focus On’ page about new passport rules on page 43. The new rules are little known but are so important. Please share them with any family & friends who are going away too. Wishing you all a wonderful May,

I just have the kitchen & lounge to do but we are about to decorate the lounge so I figured I would do it then. Upstairs feels so much better, cleaner and far less cluttered - I just hope we can keep it that way!

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Chicken & Chorizo Potato One Pot Recipe This dish is super tasty and even better there is not alot of washing up!

Ingredients 500g salad or baby potatoes (such as Charlotte or Maris Piper), halved 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ teaspoon smoked paprika 100g chorizo sausage, thinly sliced 6 garlic cloves, skin on 2 small red onions, cut into quarters 1 large courgette, cut into chunks 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves 200g kale, roughly chopped 25g pumpkin seeds Juice of 1 lemon Prep in:15 mins Cooks in: 40 mins Serves: 4 Kcals: 500 per portion

Method Preheat the oven to 220°C, 200°C Fan, Gas Mark 7. Cook the potatoes in salted boiling water for 15 minutes until tender. Drain and set aside until required. With a sharp knife cut the chicken thighs in half, place onto a large roasting tray with the potatoes, drizzle over the olive oil, season with salt, milled pepper and the smoked paprika. Cook for 10 minutes. Remove the roasting tray from the oven and add the chorizo, garlic, onions, courgette and fresh thyme. Pop back into the oven for a further 10 minutes.

Spring is in full swing, but the weather can still catch us out with unpredictable changes from mild spells to low temperatures and chilly winds. There is so much to do this month - Pot up cuttings, sowing, staking, planting out the list goes on.

Patio/Balcony Vegetable Plots Growing fresh produce shouldn’t be reserved for those with an allotment or vegetable patch. With a little imagination, it’s surprisingly simple to create a balcony/patio vegetable garden. Position different sized pots and planters at ground level. Train pea and bean tendrils up a potted trellis, obelisk or bamboo cane wigwam. Secure window boxes or hanging pots to railings. Fix vertical planters to walls and screens. Create height with a vertical plant stand. Fasten hanging baskets to the ceiling or from wall brackets. Peas, salad leaves, tomatoes, radishes, carrots, potatoes, and beans will all grow happily. Along with your vegetables plant out hardy nasturtiums and marigolds and pot them amonst your vegetable pots this will help keep the creepy-crawlies at bay.

The Chelsea Chop Have you heard of the Chelsea Chop - well its time put this in action in the garden. Do the “Chelsea chop” – it’s time to take the secateurs to laterflowering herbaceous perennials. Prune about a third of the stems by a third, another third by two thirds. This delays flowering in those stems, and increases the overall flowering season. Perennials such as phlox paniculata, heleniums, asters, echinacea, solidago (golden rod), perennial sunflowers like Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ and achillea.

Growing Sweet Peas You can still plant out sweet peas in May. They are half hardy, and will withstand a good degree of cold, but it is essential plants are hardened off before planting out. Sweet peas look just great in the border climbing up an obelisk or suitable support and add colour, height and best of all scent. Sweet peas like moisture and one tip is to line the trench with newspaper to add extra moisture retention. If sweet peas get too dry, they are prone to mildew. Remember with Sweet Peas, the more you pick the more you get, so don’t stop picking them. They are an effort, but long flowering with regular dead heading you can still pick Sweet Peas in late October so you do get your moneys worth.

As you move through the various stages of life, your financial needs and priorities will change with you. Here’s a summary of things to consider throughout your life. Young and Single As young adults flee the nest and enter the world of work they often find themselves with a little surplus income for the first time in their life. £23,000 into local charities

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has launched a new Community Foundation, giving local charities the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £5,000. Working in partnership with the Leicestershire & Rutland Community Foundation, the Society’s new fund has been launched as a result of a successful financial year in 2021, presenting the Society with a greater opportunity than ever before to invest its profits back into the community. Hinckley & Rugby Building Society’s Chief Executive, Colin Fyfe, said: “We’re very pleased to be introducing our Community Foundation because it enables us to provide an unprecedented level of support to charities in the local communities in which the business sits. As a mutual organisation, the Society feels very strongly about encouraging projects at grassroots level and we see the launch of the Foundation as a firm statement about our commitment to the community and look forward to getting to know the charities and being a supportive partner.” The charities which have been successful in receiving funding this year are: Leicestershire based Feed the Need Coalville, Helping Hands Community Trust and Hospice Hope, and Warwickshire based charities Nuneaton Men and Women in Sheds, Volunteer Friends and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. The total amount received by the charities is £23,450. The charities chosen to receive funding through the Foundation this year were voted for by Society staff. From next year, Society members will be involved in this important decision. IS YOUR PASSPORT VALID FOR TRAVEL? Do you know about the NEW post Brexit rules on passports and their expiry dates? If you hold a current passport and are going to be travelling abroad at some point be sure to check the dates on it. Passport expiry rules have changed and now a 10 year passport expires exactly 10 years after the ISSUE DATE, which is not necessarily the same as the EXPIRY DATE. In the past when you ordered a 10 year passport, if there was an overlap of your previous passport by a few months then your

new passport would be valid for 10 years from your previous passports expiry. i.e The Issue date could say 15th May 2017 and the Expiry date could say August 2027 and the expiry date used to be the date to go by but not anymore. Some countries are insisting on using the Issue date so the passport would expire 10 years from the issue date and the expiry date becomes irrelevant. Many people have already fallen foul of this and been turned away at the airport as the new rules haven’t been publicised very well.

HERE IS ONE SUCH STORY: Family £3,000 out of pocket and banned from boarding flight due to Brexit passport rule.

Mr Gurd said: “When we were booking our holiday, we were only ever asked for our passport numbers and the expiry dates, nothing else.

Nina Gurd went to the airport confident she had more than the required three months before the expiry date, which had been extended when she renewed her passport.

So a passport issued on 31 October 2012 could show an expiry date of 31 July 2023. This was fine around Europe and the world for decades – until Brexit, whereupon a long standing rule kicked in. Now some EU countries in the Schengen Area are insisting passports must be no more than 10 years old from the point of issue.

Nina Gurd was told she was unable to board a flight to Portugal because her passport expires in February 2023. The decision to ban Ms Gurd stems from a post-Brexit rule for entry to a group of European countries. She went to the airport confident she had more than the required three months before the expiry date, which had been extended when she renewed her passport. But she was told the expiry date was irrelevant, she explained. “The lady at Bournemouth Airport said it needs to be within 10 years of the issue date,” she explained.

“But the expiry date is apparently meaningless.”

Once the three-month expiry buffer is taken into account, a passport needs to have been issued no more than nine years and nine months ago. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said that the advice published on its website has, for several years, warned travellers they may face problems if they have a passport that lasts longer than 10 years.

Mrs Gurd’s passport was originally issued on 29 May 2012, meaning it would have been due to expire in May 2022 but she renewed it early and another nine months were added, giving it a new expiry date of 28 February 2023.

Portugal is one of 26 European countries within the Schengen Area of free movement. Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania have identical rules to the Schengen Area: passport issued in the past 10 years, and with three months validity remaining on the day of leaving the country.

Mrs Gurd, her husband John and their three sons Jack, Harry and Charlie, were forced to return to their home in Botley, Hampshire, on 15 April, missing out on their holiday in the Algarve.

For many years, until September 2018, the UK had a generous policy of allowing credit for “unspent” time when renewing a passport, issuing documents valid for up to 10 years and nine months. Story from The Mirror Newspaper online

So if you are in any doubt, make sure you check your passport and only go by the issue date and not the expiry date (if it’s different). Then check with the country you are travelling to, to see what their specific rules are.
