Hi Everyone and welcome the March Edition...
Ah, one of my favourite months is Marchthe transition to brighter blue skies, warmer days, crocusses on the village green (Bilton) and daffodils popping up everywhere is just fantastic and makes me smile.
Do you like the front cover image of The Close at Rugby School? The posts are the original posts from when the game was first invented. There are so mny events happening on and around The Close this year to celebrate the Bicentenary and I’m delighted to be working with Rugby School to bring you details of them. Each month we will publish whats coming up and where you can find futher information. See the box opposite.
This month I celebrated, well I say celebrated, more I was dragged kicking and screaming into being 50. Not a birthday I wanted to have or celebrate, but my wonderful family and friends had different ideas and made it very special and made me feel very loved. I’m very blessed to have such fabulous people around me.
Have a wonderful March everyone, enjoy the lovely spring flowers and Happy Mothers Day to all the lovely mums out there.
Best wishes,

Over a Decade of Experience Less Jargon More Value for Money
Most the many Bibles in the world never leave the book shelf or are banished to the bottom of a cupboard. Jesus said the Good News it contains is “like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Men have died to save the Bible from it’s enemies. What can it reveal that is so valuable to many For this amazing news see the home page of our website.

Focus on...
I would like to ask you to take a moment, a moment to think about how you look after yourself day to day, physically and mentally.
Self care is a term that we widely see and hear throughout popular culture. There are many definitions of self care; a key theme being how we keep ourselves and others physically and mentally healthy. A new year often prompts people to focus on self care, however this is something we need to prioritise all year round! After the indulgence of December holidays, we can often feel like we need to make changes to our life. Social media is saturated with strategies for self improvement but how much of it is sustainable?
How many people start a diet, abstain from alcohol, start a new exercise regime to only give up. Research indicates that on average 9-12% of people stick to their New Year's resolutions; this might be because the change may be too big, the goals unrealistic, we may not consider the why or how to maintain it or we simply may not be ready for change or are changing for other people.
So how do we make long term changes? It's about changing habits or creating new ones, so it's about doing the same thing, the same way for a long time. Making the new or desired habit achievable and realistic is key. The Stages of Change Model (Prochaska, DiClemente and Norcross, 1992) explains the processes behind personal transformation. It explains how and why some changes stick while others don’t last and how long it takes to build new habits. The stages of change can be defined as the series of stages a person goes through to introduce, modify or eliminate behaviours. The model focuses on a person's decisionmaking and intention to change. The six stages of change are precontemplation (no intention to take action in the foreseeable future), contemplation (intention to start healthy behaviour in the foreseeable future/consideration of pros and cons takes place), preparation (ready to take action in the next 30 days/smalls steps are taken towards behaviour change), action (recent change in behaviour and intention to continue), maintenance (new behaviour has been sustained for more than 6 months/intention to maintain this into the future) and termination (no desire to return to unhealthy behaviours and relapse is unlikely).
How do we know what we want to change? One way to narrow down what or how we would like to make change is to think about overall mental wellness and what you as an individual value.
Wellness is about maintaining mental and physical fitness and having enough energy to meet occupational and personal commitments.
The Global Wellness institute defines wellness as “the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health... an internal resource that helps us think, feel, connect and function; it is an active process that helps us to build resilience, grow and flourish” (What is Wellness? – Global Wellness Institute, 2023).
There are a number of models which outline the dimensions of wellness. One such model identifies 8 key dimensions, namely emotions, spiritual, intellectual, physical, environmental, financial, occupational and social wellness. But how can we relate this to our everyday life and values? Olga Phoenix created a tool called the self care wheel which allows you to break down how you would like to care for yourself across all areas of your life. You can try this for free: https://positivepsychology.com/self-care-wheel/
There are many free resources out there to help you to achieve desired change. A simple way to start is to take a moment to think about what is working and not working for you right now. It starts there!

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Savoury Leek Galette
This rustic savoury leek galette is simple and easy to whip up for a light lunch or for a French inspired meal. The flaky pastry is filled with a flavourful combination of sautéed leeks, garlic, spinach and topped with fresh feta.
Ingredients
Prep Time: 45 mins Cook Time: 40 mins Total Time: 1 hour 25 mins Feeds 4.
PASTRY
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
113 g unsalted butter (cold and cut into cubes)
90 g Trex Vegetable Fat (If not butter)
1/4 cup ice-cold water
FILLING
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 Tablespoon unsalted butter
2 cloves chopped garlic
2 cups chopped leeks, approx. 2 large leeks (white and light green parts only)
1/4 teaspoon salt
150g spinach, approx a bag
170g cup feta milk for brushing pastry ground pepper to taste
Instructions
Make your pastry - In a food processor add flour and salt, blend until incorporated. Add cold butter cubes and pulse until butter resembles pea size crumbs. Add trex and pulse until butter resembles little crumbs (don’t overpulse). Slowly add your cold water and pulse until the dough forms into a ball, or gently shape it into a ball by hand. Flatten dough into two discs and wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until ready to use.
Make your Filling: Preheat oven to 375˚F. In a large pan sauté leeks and garlic in butter and oil. Add salt, stir occasionally on medium heat until leeks are soft and translucent. Turn heat to low and add spinach one cup at a time, cook just until spinach has wilted.
Remove from heat. Working on a piece of parchment paper roll out 1 disc of pie dough (save the other dough for another day or double the filling to make one large galette).
Roll out to a rough circle about ¼ inch thick (you may want to tape down the parchment paper and dust with flour). In the middle of the circle add filling, leaving approx. a 2 inch border. Sprinkle the top of the filling with feta.
Fold the 2 inch edges over the filling to create a crust or pocket. Brush the pie dough with milk and sprinkle the entire galette with pepper. Slide a baking sheet under the parchment paper to easily transfer the galette.
Place in the bottom half of the oven and bake for approx. 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool on a cooling rack for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm.

March Gardening Tasks
By mid-March, we’re ready to welcome the start of spring — a hopeful, happy time for us gardeners. With such extreme variations in the UK weather, you need to be guided by the actual soil conditions, the condition of the ground and not by which month it happens to be. Some years we get mild enough weather, other years it can be quite poor. You need to make the best judgement based on the actual precise weather conditions at the time.
Fertilise Your Garden
Fertilise your beds. Once your soil is workable, dig a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well-rotted manure into your beds to prepare for the growing season ahead. You can also work in a general-purpose fertiliser, such as pelleted chicken manure, or fish, blood and bone. The roots of plants draw in these nutrients, and if they are present in the soil, in the right amounts then you will grow healthy and high quality plants. Getting your soil ready in March is therefore a very important task to consider.
Planting Bulbs
This month of March and early April is the best time to plant bulbs such as the lily, hyacinth and tulips. Plant these about 8” down and water them well for the best results. If you have young and sturdy plants, now is a good time to start planting those out. These include daisies, sweet williams, delphiniums and lupins. In case of frost, have the greenhouse ready to receive them.
Lawn Care
Recut any lawn edges if necessary.
Mow your lawn if it needs it. Choose a dry day and set your blades higher than usual.
Lay new turf if the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged. Prepare soil for growing new lawn from seed. Doing this now allows it time to settle before sowing.
Treat moss with a Ferrous Sulphate based product.
Aerating your lawn will enable air, water and nutrients penetrate the soil where they can be consumed by the grass’ roots. If the soil is hard and compacted, aerate by hollow-tining. This will remove lots of cores of turf. This creates space for the soil to relax into and ‘de-compact’.
For lawns that aren’t compacted, spike 2-3 inches deep with a garden fork, rolling aerator or spiking sandals.

Health
High Blood Pressure – The Silent Killer
High blood pressure, or hypertension, rarely has noticeable symptoms. But if untreated, it increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes.
Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, although many will not realise it. The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is to have your blood pressure checked. What is high blood pressure?
Blood pressure is recorded with 2 numbers. The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. They’re both measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
As a general guide high blood pressure is considered to be from 140/90mmHg (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) – or 150/90mmHg (or an average of 145/85mmHg at home) if you’re over the age of 80.
Ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg, while the target for over-80s is below 150/90mmHg (or 145/85mmHg at home).
Blood pressure readings between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you do not take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.
Everyone’s blood pressure will be slightly different. What’s considered low or high for you may be normal for someone else.
If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs, such as the brain, kidneys and eyes.
Persistent high blood pressure can increase your risk of a number of serious and potentially life-threatening health conditions, such as:
• Heart disease
• Heart attacks
• Strokes
• Heart failure
• Peripheral arterial disease
• Aortic aneurysms
• Kidney disease
• Vascular dementia
If you have high blood pressure, reducing it even a small amount can help lower your risk of these health conditions.
Check your blood pressure
The only way of knowing whether you have high blood pressure is to have a blood pressure test.
Getting this done is easy and could save your life.
You can get your blood pressure tested at a number of places, including:
• At your GP surgery
• At some pharmacies
• As part of your NHS health check
• In some workplaces
• You can also check your blood pressure yourself with a home blood pressure monitor.
Things that can increase your risk of getting high blood pressure
It’s not always clear what causes high blood pressure, but there are things that can increase your risk.
You might be more at risk if you:
• Are overweight
• Eat too much salt and do not eat enough fruit and vegetables
• Do not do enough exercise
• Drink too much alcohol or coffee (or other caffeine-based drinks)
• Smoke
• Do not get much sleep or have disturbed sleep
• Are over 65
• Have a relative with high blood pressure
• Are of black African or black Caribbean descent
• Live in a deprived area
These lifestyle changes can help prevent and lower high blood pressure:
• Reduce the amount of salt you eat and have a generally healthy diet
• Cut back on alcohol
• Lose weight if you’re overweight
• Exercise regularly
• Cut down on caffeine
• Stop smoking
Some people with high blood pressure may also need to take 1 or more medicines to stop their blood pressure getting too high.
