Big thank you to his mummy Sophie for sending it in, we loved receiving it and we hope he enjoys seeing himself in this edition too!

Thank you also to Wendy who pointed out my error of saying to recycle this magazine in your green bin once you have fnished with it - oops, that should, as Wendy quite rightly pointed out, be your BLUE BIN. Ive amneded the footer below to reflect that now.

Did your home & garden survive the storms? The only big issue we had was our greenhouse no longer resembles a greenhouse, even after recovering a few pieces from our neighbours garden. Not sure we will be growing much in it this year now! The storms meant we had our Center Parcs weekend away cancelled too which was really disappointing, but we made the most of it by making last minute plans to see family & friends we had missed out on seeing over

Christmas due to various cases of Covid. So it turned out ok in the end.

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Filo Chicken Pie Delicious and hearty, this pie uses filo pastry for a lighter topping

Ingredients 1 onion, diced 2 leeks, washed and sliced 300 g button mushrooms 500 g chicken thighs, bones removed 100 ml double cream 6-8 sheets filo pastry small handful parsley a little olive oil

Method In a heavy based saucepan, heat a little olive oil and sweat down the onions until they are softened and translucent, add the white part of the leek and continue to cook for a further 3-4 minutes.

On a separate chopping board, dice up the chicken into 1 inch pieces. Add these to the pan and seal the chicken for 5 minutes.

Add the chicken stock and bring to a gentle boil, cook for 30-40 minutes gently.

Add the green parts of the leek and cook for another 3-4 minutes.

Add the cream and bring to the boil, season to taste and add the chopped parsley.

Transfer into a 20cm pie dish.

Preheat the oven to 170oc. Lay a sheet of filo pastry on a clean chopping board and brush with olive oil. Lay the filo across the pie dish with the corners resting over the sides of the dish, fold the corners in, repeat this with the other sheets of pastry turning the pie dish so they over lap.

This month :- Cauliflower, kale, chicory, leeks, purple sprouting broccoli, radishes, spinach, spring onions, swede, rhubarb, and watercress.

Top the filo with some chopped thyme and salt and pepper. Press the pastry down gently. Bake for approximately 1 hour or until the pie is hot and the pastry golden.

Serve with some buttered potatoes and some green veg. listed in the Seasonal veg opposite.

Gardening Tasks

There’s lots to be done outside, now the slower winter months have passed. Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing the garden ready for the warmer days.

Trimming and Cutting Back Finish cutting back cornus and salix cultivars, and other shrubs grown for their colourful winter stems. Cut them right back to their bases to encourage new stem growth for next winter.

Cut out the top rosette of leaves from mahonia shrubs after they have flowered, to encourage branching.

Finish cutting back dead foliage from perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth.

Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. This will encourage a bushy growth habit. For more information about growing your own fabulous fuchsias, check out our fuchsia hub page.

Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent the plants becoming leggy.

General Garden Preparation Fertilise your beds. Once your soil is workable, dig a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well-rotted manure into your beds to prepare for the growing season ahead. You can also work in a general-purpose fertiliser, such as pelleted chicken manure, or fish, blood and bone.

If any of your garden plants or climbers need supporting this year, put them in now, so plants can grow up through them. Adding supports afterwards is trickier and often looks unattractive.

Move deciduous trees or shrubs. Now is the time to do this task, provided the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged.

Resurface paths before plants start to grow and smother them.

Lily Bulbs Canna Lily bulbs will die in frosts, so wait until another frost is unlikely before planting. This might mean that you plant in early March or mid-April depending on your zone. These beautiful flowers are low maintenance and while they prefer full sun and heat, they can tolerate some shade. Their bright, exotic colors give off a tropical feel that’s the perfect compliment to midsummer entertaining.

Spotlight Rugby Theatre is back!

Here at Rugby Theatre we are so excited to announce the reopening of our doors and stage after two long years! And we can’t wait to welcome you back with our great line-up of live performances and films from 5th March.

In March 2020 we were forced to close our lovely theatre - due to the pandemic - on the eve of our next production, postponing our theatre programme indefinitely. However, this enforced closure actually presented us with a great opportunity to use our ‘down time’ productively, to plan and carry out an extensive programme of major improvements to our Henry Street venues.

Our refurbishment programme has involved reimagining a larger and more contemporary bar space - across the street from the main theatre building - and in providing much improved accessibility, inclusive facilities and a great social space; along with a performance area for member events, such as open mic and performance nights, poetry readings and writers groups.

“After two long years of enforced sleep, we can’t wait to welcome audiences back to our lovely theatre and enjoy a great programme of stage productions and film showings, right in the heart of Rugby,” says our Acting Artistic Director

Emma Bright.

“We hope that our stylish improvements deliver a more inclusive and enjoyable theatre experience, within the unique setting of our historic theatre buildings – especially with our new and amazing theatre bar space!”

Our theatre kicks off its stage performances with Six Dead Queens and an Inflatable Henry (5-12 March) - blending history, satire and cabaret in an outrageous take on the reign of Henry VIII. This is then followed by the moving wartime story of a young evacuee in Goodnight Mister Tom (8-16 April), whilst the 2021 version of the classic musical West Side Story leads the way to head up our programme of film screenings (18-20 March, with an extra matinée on Sunday 20th at 4.30pm).

In 2019 our totally voluntary run theatre celebrated its 70th anniversary and showcased our many talented and local performers, in everything from big-budget musicals to classic plays, compelling modern drama to youth projects; but we are also home to a whole range of skilled and experienced ‘behind the scenes’ teams - spanning wardrobe through to stage crew, make-up through to scenic all of which seek to continually encourage interest and involvement from everyone within our local communities. So if you are interested in getting involved, watch this space for more details coming this summer!
