Editors Letter...

Hi everyone and welcome to the March Edition of The Rugby Register Well at last the weather seems to be changing and fingers crossed it’s not going to turn cold again. We don’t need snow, we had enough last year!

As I write this I am just back from a few hours in the Park with my 3 and friends and their kids too. It’s been 15 degrees and no-one had a coat on. The sun was out and the skies blue - it was lovely, and even warm enough for a picnic. We don’t get many February’s/early March’s like this.

It was so nice to be out in mild weather, walking, being silly, having fun instead of being wrapped up in layers rushing from one place to another to get out of the cold. I really do dislike the cold weather, roll on spring!

Ooh talking of spring, I’ve already started my ‘spring cleaning’, well its more decluttering but I’m cleaning as I go too. I’m tackling a room at a time and so far each room has resulted in a bin bag for the charity shop and a bin bag for the bin. I just need to keep up the momentum and carry on working my way through the whole house now.

The weekend this lands on your doorstep will be the weekend of the Bilton Panto. All my 3 kids are in it this year, Savannah for the first time as a dancer, Mackenzie and India are acting in it.

I’m really looking forward to seeing it and helping backstage again, it’s always good fun and is a great community event to be a part of.

Certainly for a man who is ashamed to show his chest because he has breasts or anyone who is afraid of looking old because, for them it means, they will no longer be lovable, then we cannot but sympathise and support their decision.

Personally, at the moment I am doing my best to hold back the years by eating well and exercising. I would never say never when it comes to cosmetic surgery but I do believe beauty comes from within; it is important to realise that who we are is not our appearance on the outside but how we feel on the inside. The way we live our lives is the true expression of our character not how we look. One of the great benefits of aging is that we do generally gain confidence and that feeling of being comfortable in one’s own skin is wonderful.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery, then please ensure you go to a highly qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon who is registered with the General Medical Council for cosmetic surgery. Going abroad for surgery can carry more risks so be cautious. In truth, I think with no financial restraints many more men and women would consider cosmetic surgery and why not?

We all want to look and feel our best no matter what age. Exciting new treatments are being developed all the time and who knows what the future holds. Already there are some procedures that can be undertaken during your lunch break. Perhaps in another few years having a little “Nip and Tuck” will be as simple as visiting the optician and it cannot happen soon enough for most of us.

Finally, these are my hopes and dreams for all you women out there and men of course. Fabulous at 40, Fantastic at 50, Sensational at 60, Sophisticated and Serene at 70, Elegant and Eccentric at 80, Naughty at 90 and Wise and Wonderful at 100!

We are a family run business and have been since 1983. Roger and his wife Ann have headed the company for many years.

Ann heading the office assisted by daughter Donna and Roger working with sons Craig and Marcus on domestic homes in your local area. Gardening Jobs for MARCH Hopefully it is warming up a little this month. There’s always something to be doing in the garden, whether it’s pruning, tidying, cleaning paths or sowing, so we’ve put together a quick list of gardening tasks for March.

Winter Perennials - Towards the end of the month, you should lift and separate winter perennials, such as clumps of snowdrops. The process of lifting, dividing flower bulbs is one of the many secrets to gardening success. Learning to perform these tasks properly will allow you to grow your favourite bulbs year after year without having to buy new ones, and you will actually increase the number of bulbs you have to plant each year.

Water the plants a day ahead of time to make it easier to dig them up.

With a sharp spade or shovel, dig up the entire clump with as many roots as possible.

• Divide with a knife • Cut the clump into several sections with a shovel or knife - it’s ok if you damage some of the new growth, but make sure each division has several shoots or stems.

• Remove any broken or dead leaves, stems, and roots with a sharp knife or pruners.

• Replant divisions at the same depth as the original plant, gently packing soil around the roots, and water well.

• Keep the newly planted divisions well watered until their roots are established.

Houlton Update...

Major milestones ahead for new neighbourhood Houlton. Here is the latest: Rugby’s newest neighbourhood, Houlton, is set to meet several major milestones in 2019, as work at the Urban&Civic and Aviva Investors development continues to progress at pace.

The 1.5 mile link road, which will connect Houlton to Rugby, is scheduled to open in summer, improving connectivity to Rugby and significantly cutting journey times between the community and wider area.

Completion of this major piece of infrastructure will also unlock the next key phase of the development, which will see its fourth housebuilder, Redrow, commence work at the west of Houlton later this year.

With over 110 families already living at Houlton, Redrow will join Davidsons Homes, Morris Homes, and Crest Nicholson in delivering the first phase of over 6,200 houses across the 1,200 acre site.

More of the nature walkways are set to be unveiled at the development in spring, offering the community the opportunity to explore Normandy Hill and discover the varied and vibrant ecology and wildlife at Houlton.

Almost half of the development will remain as green space, with 13,850 metres of footpaths, over 6000 metres of cycleways, 262 acres of ecological corridors and natural habitats, and 80 ponds.

Plans for Houlton’s new secondary school are set to progress significantly in 2019, which will see the former Rugby Radio Station’s Grade II listed building transformed into a multi-million pound free school, run by the Transforming Lives Educational Trust, who run Ashlawn School in Rugby.

Expected to open its doors to pupils in September 2021, the community will be able to find out more and view a model of the school over a series of public events held by Urban&Civic throughout the summer.

2019 will also see plans progress on the second phase of Dollman Farm, situated at the heart of the community, where the Tuning Fork eatery and the Barn are located. Planning application for a shop and a nursery is set to be submitted in the summer.

Johanne Thomas, Communities and Partnerships for Urban&Civic, said: “The past twelve months have seen the community of Houlton really come to life, with over a hundred families moving to their new homes, the opening of Houlton’s first primary school St. Gabriel’s Academy, and the unveiling of our state-of-the-art play-park, as well as significant progression across all areas of the first phase of development.

Prospective home-buyers can now view a range of two, three, four, and five-bedroom houses from three prestigious housebuilders, Davidsons Homes, Crest Nicholson and Morris Homes.

Access to NHS Services and how it is changing Ajit Barot and Barrie Bemand are members of the Rugby Health & Care Improvement Forum (RHCIF), a small group of retired NHS & Social Servies professionals. They spread information about the NHS and Social Care and the need for long term investment & planning to our MP, leaders of the local NHS, other politicians and the press. Their aim is to support our NHS & Socail Care and try to keep the general public informed.

At a time when the NHS is under increasing pressure, we as a group of retired health and social care professionals & now patients ourselves, are concerned on how patients are accessing NHS services locally & nationally and whether they understand the changes that are happening.

Primary Care is free for all & the first point of contact for most people. This service is delivered by a wide range of independent contractors such as GP’s, dentists, pharmacists & optometrists from surgeries, pharmacies, opticians and NHS walk-in-centres. Choosing which service is right for you at a given time may not always be easy & often you may have more than one option.

Asking your local pharmacist for advice maybe appropriate & they are able to offer advice on many common minor illnesses. They also have access to medication records (summary care records) to discuss issues regarding the medication you’re taking i.e. dosage, side effects etc.. They may also refer you to your GP for further advice or treatment.

When using GP practice services it is important to be aware that you may not need to see a doctor. The use of nurse practitioners, asthma & diabetic nurses, and practice based clinical pharmacists as members of the primary care team has already been happening for many years. These members of staff do share the work load and have been shown to improve the quality of care and give easier access for patients.

At present as there is a well recognised national shortage of GPs the use of other health professionals in Primary Care is increasing.

The Government has recently announced 2 plans as part of its NHS Long Term Plan to use staff other than GPs or Nurses in Primary Care. Firstly 1,000 social prescribing ‘’Link Workers’’ who will be able to direct people to community services such as Exercise or Art or Mindfulness lessons which officials say may help boost health and well-being reducing the need for prescribed pills or other treatments. This follows a successful pilot in Leeds in which 5,000 patients have been seen each year.

Secondly the recruitment of up to 20,000 other professionals such as physiotherapists, paramedics, health assistants and pharmacists to work alongside GPs and other health professionals over the next 5 years. This poses the question will there be sufficient health professionals in these specialties to help bridge the gap in personnel?

But will the general public find it acceptable to see an alternative to their family doctor? The experience of working in practices with nurse practitioners and clinical pharmacists suggests that it is. Surveys have shown that time spent with these health professionals is appreciated by patients and beneficial to them and access to the practice.

It is inevitable given the shortage of GPs and the changes in society where people now expect an immediate response that the NHS has to change to meet these new challenges.

Other parts of the Long Term Plan are for all GPs to have on-line consultations in addition to traditional face to face ones and the ability to book appointments with any member of the Primary Health Team on-line.

So we shall all have to learn to accept and adapt to these changes whether we are patients or health professionals.

At present patients when unsure of which NHS service to use may call NHS 111. They may then be referred to the services mentioned above or to a walkin-centre, minor injuries unit or urgent care centre.

For emergencies the use of A&E departments or calling 999 is appropriate.

In these times of increasing difficulty of accessing the NHS it is important to be aware of the different sorts of service available for patients and the ways in which our Health Service is changing.

a rb o n a ra It’s spring but there is always the nagging fear that we could wake any day to a snowy cold snap that immobilises your car as well as most of the country. We have had a number of windy days in Rugby recently which has seen some impressively windswept pensioners enter ‘three’ for a hot bowl of soup.

With this in mind I am going to share another favourite pasta dish of mine which although simple, is Royally messed up by many who make it and I include most restaurants I visited while in the Amalfi coast last year. Yes I did go to the coast last year in case I didn’t mention it!

In fact one of the worse Carbonara’s I’ve ever seen was in what seemed to be an authentic Trattoria run by a husband and wife team.

However judging by the food, this could have just been a mafia front for a money laundering operation as this pair knew nothing about food or how to cook it. The dry lumpy Carbonara we were served could have been used to conceal a light firearm it was so thick and globular. The food, especially the pasta, was a real let down which was a shame as I do love a good pasta. Hopefully this will give you a fighting chance of making a great Carbonara.

The Ingredients Lardons: If I’ve said it once I’ll say it again, I do love these piggy treats Parmesan: Fresh if you can, although I do have a soft spot for pre-grated, mainly a love of not grating my fingers!

Penne: Other pastas will do, but don’t call it a Penne Carbonara if you do Single cream: Like double, but single An egg: Er, they come from hens?

The Method Boil the pasta and set aside when al dente. Mix two tablespoons of parmesan with 200ml of single cream and mix in the egg with a good amount of seasoning.

Fry the lardons in a saucepan on a ‘highish’ heat for a while till you get a little sear on them. Add the cream mixture and turn the heat down to barely on. Stir vigorously not allowing the sauce to settle or become scrambled eggs. The consistency should be like liquid velvet cupping each individual pasta piece. You can add peas if you like and dust with a little more parmesan when you serve it with some cracked pepper. Sit back and enjoy this comforting hug of a meal or visit ‘three’ instead.
