Focus on... FRAUDSTERS

Please Take Care! After hearing of one too many people being conned by fraudsters we wanted to try and help stop it! You may have read one of our previous articles offering caution on tradesmen and we want to reiterate it again for those who aren’t aware. Whether it be your neighbours, elderly relatives or someone who may just not be aware, there are unkind, untrustworthy and dishonest people around. There are a lot all over the country but there seem to be a lot more in our area recently! We hate to hear of people losing out on money for a job that hasn’t been completed properly or in reality has not been attempted at all. Part finished work that’s not right or guttering that should have been cleaned and is just as dirty as before! They start by turning up unannounced, often in a plain van (no company name to avoid anyone being able to try and trace) knocking the door and telling you that you need x, y and z done on your house and it will cost you e.g £300. They can even fit you in there and then! (Often people think wow that’s great they’re sorting a problem I didn’t know I had, and it will be done without me worrying about when it will be fixed, how convenient!) They walk around aimlessly and pretend they are carrying out the work and will often show buckets of moss and debris for example of how much they have “cleared from your guttering” sadly already having the debris in the buckets before they even got to you.

Suddenly they have had to carry out extra works on your house and you now owe them £3000! They are often very intimidating and as they prey on the vulnerable or unaware, they pay it out of fear. Delicious Seasonal Recipes Summer Pasta Salad

This fresh, easy pasta salad recipe comes together in under 30 minutes! Tossed in a tangy vinaigrette & filled with veggies, it’s a sure cookout hit.

Ingredients 170g uncooked fusilli pasta 30 halved cherry tomatoes 255 cups cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed 50g Rocket Cucumbers, sliced into thin half moons 150g crumbled feta cheese Bunch of basil leaves, torn 20g minced parsley 20g chopped mint 30g toasted pine nuts For the Dressing 3 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, more for drizzling 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon herbes de Provence, or dried Italian seasoning ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes ¾ teaspoon sea salt

Method

For the best quality food eat the food in season. This month :- Aubergine, Beetroot, Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Broad Beans, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cherries, Chicory, Chillies, Courgettes, Cucumber, Gooseberries, Greengages, Meanwhile, make the dressing. In a small bowl, whisk Fennel, French Beans, Garlic, Kohlrabi, Loganberries, together the olive oil, lemon juice, mustard, garlic, herbes de New Potatoes, Onions, Peas, Potatoes, Radishes, Provence, red pepper flakes, and salt. (Note: the dressing will Raspberries, Redcurrants, Rhubarb, Rocket, Runner have a strong flavor, it’ll mellow once it coats all of the pasta Beans, Samphire, Sorrel, Spring Greens, Spring salad ingredients). Onions, Strawberries, Summer Squash, Sweetheart Cabbage, Swish Chard, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress. Drain the pasta, toss it with a little olive oil (so that it doesn’t stick together) and let it cool to room temp. Transfer to a Sustainable types: of fish this month is Coley/saithe, large bowl with the tomatoes, chickpeas, rocket, cucumbers, brown crab, flounder, haddock, herring/sild, mackerel, feta cheese, basil, parsley, mint, and pine nuts. Pour the plaice, pollock, cold water prawns, common sole/ dressing and toss to coat. Dover sole. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Prepare the pasta according to the package directions, or until slightly past al dente.

Season to taste with more lemon, salt, pepper, and/or a drizzle of olive oil, if desired, and serve.

Best Cheese: Fresh goat’s cheese, Stinking Bishop.

June Gardening Tasks Finally, summer is here and your garden is in full bloom. There are lots to do in the garden in June including lots of watering and weeding and even harvesting some fruit. This month we advise on lawn care, and using milk as a fertiliser as a money saving idea.

Lawn Care

Spend time to care for your lawn. If there hasn’t been much rain, raise your lawn mower blades to reduce stress on the grass. Water your lawn during hot weather, particularly newly seeded or turfed lawns. Keep new lawns well-watered. Warm weather encourages rapid weed growth — apply specific lawn weed killer to tackle them. Feed your lawn with a special lawn fertiliser to encourage healthy green growth. Recut lawn edges, or install lawn edging to make future maintenance easier.

Money Saving Ideas for Planting This is a superb way of using less potting compost when planting in your patio containers. Filling the planter about halfway with empty aluminum cans, not only saves you buying lots of potting compost but also makes your pots lighter and more moveable. Make sure that the cans are laying on their sides or upside down so that they don’t fill with water over time. Carefully place potting soil on top of the cans, tuck your plants in and fill the planter with soil to about an inch from the rim. This is a great tip for people like me who tend to over-water plants. The cans provide excellent drainage so the roots don’t sit in water.

Using Milk for Plant Care Milk can be used it in your garden. The beverage isn’t just good for the human body, but it’s beneficial for plants, too. Milk serves as a fertilizer for your garden to help plants grow, as well as has antifungal and pesticidal attributes. Any type of milk, including fresh, expired, evaporated, and powdered, can be used in a garden as long as it’s diluted properly. Stick with reduced-fat/ low-fat is best. Simply mix the milk with water in a 50-50 ratio and pour it into a spray bottle. Watering down the milk is essential to ensure it actually benefits your garden, rather than destroying the plants. The ratio doesn’t have to be exact—in fact, you can even just mix up the very last dregs of the gallon as you finish off the jug, using just a quarter-cup or so of milk. Apply the milk mixture to the leaves of the plants, checking back about 30 minutes to ensure that the watery milk was absorbed. If there’s still liquid sitting on the leaves at that time, gently wipe them down with a wet cloth. Certain plants, such as tomatoes, are prone to developing fungal diseases if liquid sits on the leaves for too long. You can also pour the milk mixture directly into the soil at the base of the plant, which will allow the roots to absorb it.

Focus on... LOCAL ARTISTS Summer Art Weeks 2022 - 18 June to 3 July

A vibrant celebration of the region’s creative talent. This year’s is a bumper year, as we have over 400 artists and makers taking part at 149 venues across Warwickshire and Coventry. From bars to barns, cafés to churches, galleries to gazebos, halls to hallways, you’ll find amazing original art presented by the talented creators. A number of Rugby venues are hosting over 40 artists this year. And all at affordable prices should you be tempted to treat yourself or buy a gift for a loved one. As ever though, there’s genuinely NO expectation to buy anything. A VIBRANT CELEBRATION OF CREATIVE TALENT This summer at Cleves Garden Studio we have an eclectic vibrant mix of styles disciplines and creativity produced by artists’ designers and makers over all three free to visit weekends of our Warwickshire Open Studios event. Geoff and Dot have missed opening the garden and workshop studio and sharing space with artists’ craftspeople and visitors because of the pandemic but we are back with several changes to the garden and refurbishment of the workshop studio. Work encompasses inspirational painting by Peter in acrylic and oil that develop their own character. Glazed thrown and hand built stoneware ceramic produced in a variety of styles by Dot Geoff and Louise. Colourful eclectic hand-made felt textiles by Penny. Recycled metal into jewellery and small sculptures by Anthea. And Helena, who produces abstract tessellations and geometric origami structures. Please don’t think if you visit us you are pressured to buy work. We all want you to have an enjoyable and relaxed event. Our artists and craftspeople exhibiting and demonstrating their crafts appreciate the time you have made for your visit. As you witness first-hand the inspiration and motivation which drives us all to be creative in our fields. Visitor Comment: “What a delightful visit!
