Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the June Edition of The Rugby Register It’s been a busy month here in the office and I was so busy at the end of last month that I forgot to mention in the May edition that it was the magazines 14th Birthday. So, belated Happy Birthday to us! I’m so very lucky to still be doing a job that I love all these years on. I get to meet lots of lovely people & businesses, be nosey and chat a lot - what’s not to love?!

from within the magazine, even if its an event that you attend, be sure to tell them that you saw it here in The Rugby Register. Not only is it great feedback for them as they can see what advertising is working for them but it also helps my little independent business along too. Thank you.

This month I went along to the launch of the Anne Macready Theatre and Rugby School’s Festival on the Close to hear about all the fantastic events that they have coming up, be sure to have a look Have a great (hopefully sunny) June everyone! - there’s something to suit all tastes. We also have Rugby’s annual Festival of Culture kicking off this month which, having read through the Programme, Anne xx seems even bigger and better than ever. If you haven’t received a copy of the Programme you can pick one up from many of the town centre retailers Competition Winner: or from the Visitors Centre. The first event is on 23rd June and it runs until 14th July. Congratulations to Mary Can I ask that when you make contact with anyone

WIN TICKETS... TO EDINBURGH FESTIVAL PREVIEWS AT RUGBY’S NEW MACREADY THEATRE Rugby’s newly launched Macready Theatre is wowing local audiences with its first season’s programme. Its first event, ‘The Greatest Showman Singalong’ featuring a stunt professional opera singer, was a sell-out followed by another sell-out of its monthly Pizza & Jazz event. The Christmas Show has already sold out half of the dates. Up and coming shows to look forward to include the Edinburgh Festival previews in July followed by a just-announced regular Manford’s Comedy Club night starting 28 September. Started by top TV presenter and comedian, Jason Manford, the Club employs some of the best comedians from the UK comedy circuit putting them in front of some of the best crowds. The Macready’s aims are to educate and inspire providing a programme of professional touring theatre at a competitive price with a third of all tickets made available to local state school groups for free during term time.

Win tickets!...

And to celebrate its success, Rugby Register has teamed up with the Macready to give families of four the chance to win tickets to the Edinburgh Festival preview performances in July. First up is Unbelievable Science, a performance of captivating chemistry and bonkers biology from magicians Morgan and West with exciting live experiments on Thursday, 11 July. The second preview is the Bureau of Untold Stories, a fun detective drama for the whole family showing on Saturday, 13 July. We are offering prizes of a set of family tickets (one adult, three children, or two adults and two children) for each of these performances. All you have to do is email the answer to the below question to: catherine@rugbyregister.co.uk Q: Name the magical duo performing in Unbelievable Science at Macready Theatre on 11 July Closing date is: Thursday 20th June

The Macready Theatre, conveniently located in the centre of town on the corner of Lawrence Sheriff Street and Little Church Street has received some great testimonials since its launch: ‘Fantastic, professional theatre in Rugby. Visited today to see ‘Out Of The Hat’ Amazing! Usually have to go to Warwick Arts Centre to see productions of this quality - not anymore!’ ‘Fabulous time at a wonderful, professional theatre in the heart of town. Fantastic to have shows for the kids on locally.’ ‘It was a truly wonderful show! It’s an amazing theatre to have locally! Will definitely be back!’

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert Shares her thoughts on being more Conscious and Moving that Body I have recently returned from New York where I saw some Clients and conducted a workshop for Morgan Stanley the large financial institution. I also worked hard on the book I am writing called “Don’t Die at Your Desk – a Health and Wellbeing Manual for Busy Executives,” which I am hoping to have published later this year. I love New York, I find the energy of Manhattan so exciting; it is one of my favourite cities and I was lucky enough to run in Central Park which looks so beautiful in Spring, they were slightly behind us as their weather has not been as good as we have experienced. Unfortunately, two days prior to my return home I was knocked down by a cyclist who was delivering food. He was cycling on the wrong side of the road and going in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic. The crossing said go and I simply did not see him at all, I was just intent on crossing the road. It was a terrible shock to find myself lying on the road, I got up very quickly and apart from being very bruised, luckily there was nothing broken. Partly this is a warning to take extra care if you are visiting New York because evidently this was not an isolated incident and in fact there has been at least one fatality. What it made me realise is that often we are just not fully conscious of our surrounding. I am sure many of you will have noticed that when you are walking in any town there are people on their mobiles; people who do not seem concerned if they bump into you and people who walk at you rather than make room for you. I wonder is this yet another indication that society is becoming dead to their environment and surroundings. I would love to hear from you with your views. The problem with cyclists is not restricted to New York. There are a lot of cyclist now that cycle on the footpath often at speed so please be aware and take extra care. Of course, there are many cyclists who obey the highway code and cycle safely, but it only takes one to knock into you and cause a lot of pain or worse. Cycling is an excellent form of exercise so please don’t be discourage if you are a cyclist just be more aware of pedestrians please. In fairness I should state that drivers also need to be more conscious of pedestrians and indeed cyclists. Warwickshire is such a beautiful county so now the weather is lovely why not get outside and start enjoying it. Exercise is essential for good health for the following reasons so I would encourage you to start becoming more conscious and enjoy your environment and of course, “Move that Body!”

When we build more physical activity into our lives it not only helps us to reduce weight, if needed, it will also make you feel happier and healthier. It may prevent heart disease and stroke and increases general body fitness and wellbeing. Regular exercise also protects your bones and helps you avoid developing osteoporosis in later life by increasing mobility in your joints and preventing aches and pains and arthritis. Exercising is a wonderful way to relax and wind down; it reduces stress. 1. Always put your best effort into whatever activity you are doing. For optimum calorie burning, you should be able to feel your heart beating (not racing) and be slightly (not very) out of breath. If you are sweating a little bit, that also shows the activity is working. 2. Use your arms as much as possible when exercising, for example swing them by your sides when walking, wave them around when dancing and try to move your whole body. The more activity the more you burn calories and the fitter you will become. 3. For the first two minutes of any activity warm up gently, to help prevent any muscular aches the next day and also reduce the risk of straining or causing an injury. Remember to stretch out your muscles when you have finished your workout. 4. Remember always wear comfortable clothes, whatever you decide to do. If you are walking or cycling to work, take a change of clothing, and wear several layers in case you need to strip a layer off when you get warm. 5. If you find exercise boring, try to find new ways to keep yourself active. Think of all the things you liked to do as a child and try one or two again – it could be anything from cycling or swimming to playing tennis, roller skating, tap dancing or salsa. Have fun! Live with joy and health. Elizabeth Beetham www.powerforhealth.com Healthy Living for Life Tel: 07773 790736

Bespoke Independent Financial Advice You Can Trust P J L F i n a n c i a l S e r v i c e s L t d was established in 2011 by our manager Paul Loveridge who has amassed over 20 years experience within the financial services industry, having grown steadily since then we are now a team of seven highly motivated and trustworthy individuals. We are a directly authorised firm of Independent Financial Advisers and Mortgage Advisers based in the midlands. We offer impartial financial advice on many aspects of both personal and business needs with our bespoke financial planning service. Here at PJL Financial Services the client really does come first and we understand and respect the fact that financial planning is not a one size fits all product, which is why our team of highly experienced professionals are committed to providing the very best advice for each individual client and we can guarantee that any advice given will be part of a bespoke package specifically tailored to you and your needs. We provide advice on mortgages, buy to lets, savings and investments, all aspects of retirement planning (personal pensions, company pensions, drawdown pensions and annuities), life and critical illness planning, income protection, insurances and estate planning. We often find that people have old, out of date policies and pensions which have not been reviewed for many years which may not be providing the best value for money anymore and by simply updating to a newer cheaper plan or even just altering the investment funds within an existing plan the potential returns can be dramatically improved.

Mortgage Consultancy - Free Consultations - Access to whole of the market - Over 20 years of mortgage experience - Access to exclusive deals - Supply of solicitors at your request - Advice and guidance throughout, from application to completion With our help, your house buying/ remortgage process can be simple and stress free.

Financial Planning - Free consultations - Pre & Post Retirement Planning - Savings & Investments - Life/Critical Illness Cover - Income Protection - Inheritance Tax Planning With the help of our in house pension specialist you can be confident that all of your retirement options can be taken into account and advised upon.

If you need help or guidance with any area of your finances and plans for the future why not give us a call on 01 788 5 7112 2, we’ll be more than happy to discuss these with you and arrange a free, no obligation appointment either here at our Rugby based office or in the comfort of your own home.

Providing financial advice since 1993 Providing Financial Solutions in Mortgages, Investments, Protection and Retirement I’ve been providing financial advice to clients from individuals to businesses for over 25 years. I always look to understand your individual needs and offer the most appropriate solutions… our clients always come first. Mortgages

Investments

• Are you considering buying your next home?

• Having money to save is one thing. Knowing how and where to save it is another.

• Maybe you’re a first time buyer? • Are you looking to Remortgage or Capital raise for home improvements? • Are you looking to buy your next investment property? • I have access to exclusive deals through Intrinsic that are not available to the general public. • There are so many mortgages to choose from, so let me source the right deal for you today.

• I help clients save for their financial futures by creating wealth through tailored investment portfolios and strategies.

Protection • I provide life cover, critical illness and income protection solutions for you to ensure that suitable cover is in place.

Akhil Satsangi

Retirement Planning • I help clients with all aspects of retirement planning, whether you are looking to start saving now or you may be approaching retirement we have the solutions you need for a prosperous future.

I can provide you bespoke tailored solutions to ensure a more secure and successful financial future so don’t hesitate to contact me for a free initial consultation.

What our clients say about us:

“I have trusted Akhils’ advice for over 20 years. He has identified the best options for me and my family on residential and BTL mortgages, life and critical illness protection as well as pensions and wealth preservation for the benefit of my family. He listens to your needs and aspirations then tailors the best tax efficient solution accordingly. If you are looking for honest, impartial assistance Akhil is the best solution.” (Roger Thornton, 2019)

Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. The value of pensions and investments can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

Gardening Jobs for JUNE June is the time to really enjoy the garden as the long, warm days and light evenings provide more time for leisure and relaxation, but as always there are jobs to be done.

B

• Continue watering newly planted, young and particularly thirsty plants, such as salad vegetables, tomatoes and dahlias. • Weeding, weeding, weeding! d d Jo b s • Keep the greenhouse well ventilated and shaded where necessary. O • Take softwood and leaf cuttings. • Protect against pests, insects and birds. • Place hardier house plants outside. • Take time to sit back and enjoy the garden.

g rin

b a c k bl u e ! How to get Blue Hydrangeas - Did you buy bright blue hydrangeas which have now turned a muddy pink? It means your soil is alkaline. But don’t worry now is the time to apply aluminium sulphate, sequestrene or a proprietary blueing compound to the soil (in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions). The flowers will once again magically appear that beautiful bright blue.

Lawns This month the lawn requires regular mowing (once or twice) to keep it looking looking neat and tidy and growing thick. You can start to lower the cutting height of your mower as the risk of frosts falls too. Apply weed treatments to your lawn carefully if you need to keep your grass looking good. This is a good time to over-seed your lawn if you have any bare patches left over from the winter months.

One of Rugby's Best Kept Secrets... This year Rugby Model Engineering Society - who run Rainsbrook Valley Railway, are celebrating their 70th year. Despite celebrating their platinum anniversary, there are still many people in Rugby who don't know about this little treasure. Running on the third Sunday of the month between April and October, with a few extra special events thrown in, the friendly bank of members still have visitors every running day who have only just found out about this Little Railway. They've come a long way in those 70 years, moving from their site in Hillmorton to the current site on Onley Lane, with a growth of this site, a growth in visitors, a growth in membership, and a growth in the size and variety of engines running - it is now as popular as ever before, if not more so. 'We really enjoy our hobby and love encouraging future generations of engineers. We are hoping to celebrate in style with a special weekend event on Saturday July 20th from 2pm till 5pm with Bilton Silver Band and the Mayor of Rugby to officially open our new platform as part of our site extension at 1.30pm.' 'The extension has been a great success and we are really grateful to everyone who sponsored a sleeper and contributed in other ways such as the Tesco appeal to enable this to happen. It's not too late for anyone who would like to sponsor a sleeper as we are still, yet to extend our raised track.' To find out more about their running days you can visit their website www.rugbymes.co.uk, follow them on Facebook @RugbyMES or see their poster in our Community News page.

We have teamed up with Rugby MES to give away 10 tickets for use this season. Simply email, Facebook message or post your answer to the following question: Q: What date is the Special Event for the 70th Anniversary? Entries to: Email: catherine@rugbyregister.co.uk Facebook Message: @RugbyRegister Post: The Rugby Register, Harcourt, 2B Longrood Road, Bilton, Rugby CV22 7RG Closing Date: 20th June. 2 x winners will each receive 5 tickets

EQUITY RELEASE ADVICE SERVICE

Have you considered accessing the equity in your home? You may be able to release cash to pay off an existing mortgage, provide you with a regular income to top up your pension, carry out some home improvements or treat yourselves to that holiday that you have always wanted. Grosvenor Independent Financial Planning is your local advice service that gives you access to a range of Lifetime Mortgage providers. To be eligible for equity release you must be aged 55 and own your home. We do not arrange Home Reversion Plans. We will only recommend Lifetime Mortgage products that meet the standards of the Equity Release Council, who oversee the industry and its members and ensure that their strict standards and principles are upheld. We will spend time understanding your financial circumstances in detail so that we can recommend the most appropriate product for you if we feel it is suitable. The first consultation is totally free of charge and without obligation. If you do have any questions about equity release, the service we offer or if you would like to book a no-obligation appointment, please call us on:

Alan McMahon DipPFS, Certs CII (MP & ER). 49, Barkus Close, Southam, Warwickshire, CV47 1GB. A lifetime mortgage is secured against your home. Typically, there are no monthly repayments. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. Toy Story 4: Release Date: 21 June The Plot: Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as ‘trash’ and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries. Yesterday: Release Date: 21 June The Plot: Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers

their songs. He’s about to become a very big deal. From Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Richard Curtis, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and Notting Hill, comes a rock-n-roll comedy about music, dreams, friendship, and the long and winding road that leads to the love of your life.

Could you help local young people?... The Friendship Project for Children is looking for volunteers to become ‘Older Friends’ for children and young people in the Rugby area to support children and young people aged 6-16 years old. The Project is a Warwickshire-wide charity that supports 65 friendships. In the Rugby Borough, there are 11 friendships currently supported; but many more children and young people are waiting. “If we could double the number of volunteers in the Rugby Borough it would be amazing – because there is no shortage of children in need of our support,” Richard Barrett, Friendship Project Trustee and Fundraiser, said. “Our volunteers come from all sorts of backgrounds, some are parents whose children have grown up and moved away, others don’t have any children”. Kelly Furness, Area Coordinator for Rugby explains “Our volunteers take the children out once a week for 2 – 3 hours. The children and young people we support are referred to us by local services as they need some one-toone attention. Whatever the reason for the referral, having some time away from home; sometimes in difficult circumstances, really does improve the child’s self-esteem and wellbeing. Our volunteers give a child time to have fun and allow them to be a child again.” One of our Rugby Volunteers, Jon has been supporting a teenage boy for 18 months. Jon and his younger friend enjoy activities including cycling, racquet sports and preparing meals together and also attend the project’s events including this year’s trip to WASPs Rugby. In talking about the rewards of volunteering, Jon reflected “the sense of achieving something with a young person who comes from a background where they don’t get time invested in them is very rewarding for me. Simply making a difference in their life; however small, is great to see and makes you feel positive about the time you give.” In terms of support Jon says; “the support received has been second to none. There is an excellent level of communication and lots of advice on offer. Support is always there, and I have felt fully supported from day one.” Kelly says that feedback from the professionals involved in supporting Jon’s younger friend has been exemplary. “We consider ourselves very lucky to have brilliant volunteers such as Jon here in the Rugby area. The work of all of our volunteers across Warwickshire is really appreciated and has a huge impact on a child or young person’s life. Just a couple of hours a week can really make all the difference.” Prospective “Older Friends” must be over 18 and have their own transport. As well as taking a young person out each week, volunteers are invited to group events. Volunteers are reimbursed mileage and expenses for the child and receive training and support throughout their friendship. Volunteers commit to be an Older Friend for at least 6 months to ensure they can provide a child with stability and visits are usually weekly for 2 -3 hours. The aim is to develop interests and confidence in the young person through outings and activities. The Project is also seeking Group Supporters who provide regular support to Older Friends. Jon says; “If you have a spare couple of hours a week and would like to help a local child please get in touch, you really can make a difference to a child and a friendship benefits you as well as the child” If you would like to volunteer and make a difference to a young person or for more information, please contact Kelly Furness on 07415 399776 or

There are benefits of eating seasonal produce. In-season produce is fresher and tastes better, sweeter and perfectly ripe. When fruits and vegetables are picked for consumption that have been naturally ripened on the vine or the tree and harvested at the right time, it will have much more flavour and nutrition..

The recipe of Crab and Chilli Spaghetti may look rather a simple recipe, but it is super tasty and definitely worth a try. It’s so quick and easy it makes a healthy alternative to fast food..

PREP TIME: 15 mins The

COOK TIME: 10 mins

Ingredients

500 g spaghetti Good sea salt 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 fresh red chillies, seeded and finely chopped 2 medium-sized dressed crabs Juice of 1 lemon 25 g fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 lemon, quartered

The Method Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of well-salted water, according to the packet instructions. Warm the olive oil in another large pan, and soften the chopped chilli for a couple of minutes. Add the crab (both brown and white meat) and warm it through, then switch off the heat, add the lemon juice and stir – the sauce should be quite liquidy. Drain the spaghetti of all but a couple of tablespoons of cooking water, and toss thoroughly with the crab and the parsley. Serve immediately with a lemon quarter each, extra olive oil and salt, so people can help themselves.
