Rugby Theatre’s Youth Project is making a triumphant return for the first time since the pandemic, with over 80 local youngsters staging the iconic show Grease: The Musical over the summer holidays. Starring leather-clad Danny and girlnext-door Sandy, Grease: The Musical is packed with classic hits including Summer Nights, Greased Lightning and You’re the One that I Want.
“The youth project was set up to give young people access to theatre, and to help them develop skills they can take forward into their adult lives,” says the project’s founder Phil Kettle. “About 2,000 youngsters have taken part since the first youth project in 1997, and by now the oldest student from Annie - our first ever show - will be 47 years old!”
The youth project is open to budding actors, singers and dancers aged between 10 and 21, who put together a highquality show after just 10 days of rehearsals, guided by a West End director, choreographer and musical director. For those who don’t want to be on stage, there’s also the opportunity to be involved behind the scenes - in props, scenery, lighting and costume. Now in its 24th year (following a covid-enforced break), previous youth project shows have included The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Addams Family and Thoroughly Modern Millie, all showcasing the wealth of talent in and around Rugby, and offering life-changing experiences for children and young adults.
“The youth project is made possible by about 30 adults who give up their Summer holidays to chaperone, support the technical students, provide costumes and do a huge amount of admin work to make the project happen,” says Phil.
“It’s also supported by some fantastic local businesses. Some sponsors have been with us from the beginning, like the Heart of England Co-op and GE. Other regular sponsors include Bespoke Hairdressing, Charles Watts Engineering, Frank Ewington, AutoLec, Nicholls Building Supplies, The Rugby Register and many more.”
The ground-breaking project has inspired some youngsters to go on to have successful careers as actors and performers. Rugby Theatre youth project alumni include Matthew Duckett, who starred as Sir Clifford Chatterley in the 2022 Netflix film Lady Chatterley’s Lover, as well as appearing in theatre productions around the UK. Laura Pitt-Pulford, who played Carol Butler in Emmerdale, is currently appearing as Rose in the West End production of Aspects of Love; and former Avon Valley pupil and youth project star Emil Ruddock now has a leading role in the West End production of Hamilton, playing James Maddison and Hercules Mulligan in the show.
“Out of the 2,000 youth project students, at least 20 have gone on to have a career in the performing arts,” continues Phil. “But the experience is equally as rewarding to young people who have no plans to work in theatre professionally. They learn self-confidence, teamwork and have the opportunity to thrive outside of a school environment. And most of all, it’s lots of fun!
“I’m incredibly proud of what the youth project continues to accomplish year on year.”

Deadheading is the term used for the removal of flowers from plants when they are fading or dead. It is done to keep plants looking attractive and encourage more blooms, whether in beds and border, containers or hanging baskets. Most flowers lose their attraction as they fade, spoiling the overall appearance of beds, borders and containers, and are best removed. However, there are other reasons: Regular deadheading directs energy into stronger growth and more flowers. Once the flowers are pollinated; seed heads, pods or capsules form at the expense of further growth and flower development.
Bedding plants: Tender plants growing in beds, containers and hanging baskets respond well to deadheading. The faded blooms of argyranthemums, cherry pie, pansies, polyanthus and petunias can be removed with finger and thumb.
Geraniums (Pelargonium): Hold the faded flower stalk near the base and pull downwards. The old bloom will snap out cleanly.
Roses: Gently snap off the faded flowers, breaking the stalk just below the head.
Shrubs: Among the most important shrubs to deadhead are rhododendron (and azaleas), camellias, lilacs and tree peonies. Use finger and thumb to pick or snap off each dead head where it joins the stem or secateurs to cut just below the flower head. Avoid damaging buds or developing growths immediately below the flower.
Dahlias are incredibly thirsty plants – just look at their fleshy leaves and luscious stems and it’s easy to see why. To ensure your Dahlias are blooming bright with an abundance of beautiful flowers, nourish your plants with liquid feed and regularly water them during the next month. While smaller Dahlias are self-standing, the tall varieties may need supporting with stakes – simply tie the stems to the stake with string to keep their flower heads up right.
Mow lawns lightly and frequently, producing short clippings that are best left on the lawn during hot weather to act as a moisture-retentive mulch. Any excess plant debris (thatch) can be scarified out during autumn maintenance. Mulching mowers cut the clippings even more finely than normal rotary blades, making the mulch less visible.
Raise the mower’s cutting height slightly, especially in hot weather. This can help the grass cope better, particularly as growth starts to slow later in the month.
Resist the temptation to water established lawns, even in dry spells – grass should cope well with drought and although it may die back, it will soon recover once rain returns. See our advice on caring for lawns during drought. Only new lawns really need watering.
Remove any unwanted weeds using a trowel or grubbing tool, but bear in mind that many wildflowers and flowering weeds can attract wildlife and add valuable colour to gardens.

Yes this is not meat for the BBQ but believe me when I say its not just for the vegetarians This is a lovely simple way to cook cabbage on the barbecue. We love barbecuing hispi (sweetheart) cabbages, but this method will work for savoy cabbages too – they tend to be a little more rugged so the cooking time might be a little longer.
The principle of the dish is that as your flavoured butter melts, it slides in between the leaves of the cabbage and cooks it from the inside out. Servings: 4 servings
2 hispi cabbages
Miso butter
100g of salted butter, softened
30g of white miso
1 small garlic clove, finely grated
1 pinch of chilli flakes, (optional)
Goma dressing
3 tbsp of white sesame seeds, toasted
2 tbsp of rice vinegar
1/2 tbsp of tamari
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp mirin
1/2 tsp sesame oil
1 tbsp of Kewpie mayonnaise, (optional)
Garnish
4 tbsp of furikake seasoning
4 pinches of gochugaru, (optional)
Start by preheating your barbecue to 200°C and set it up for direct cooking
While the barbecue is heating up, make the miso butter by mixing all the ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside
Remove the outer leaves of the cabbages and discard. Slice the cabbages in half lengthways and brush the cut sides with some miso butter. Place cut-side down on the barbecue for 10 minutes, cooking over direct heat until lightly charred with bar marks
Once the cabbages are nicely charred, remove them from the barbecue and set it up for indirect cooking. Turn the cabbage halves over so the cut sides are facing up. Brush plenty of miso butter over the cut sides of the cabbages, making sure the butter gets into all of the nooks and crannies. Close the lid and cook the cabbages for another 20 minutes, or until they are tender throughout. Baste regularly with the miso butter to keep them moist
Meanwhile, make the goma dressing. Grind the sesame seeds to a rough paste in a pestle and mortar, then add the rest of the ingredients and whisk together to form a dressing
When the cabbages are tender, remove from the barbecue and slice in half lengthways. Serve with extra miso butter, the sesame dressing and top with furikake seasoning and a sprinkling of gochugaru
