What a wonderful histoic event for us to be a part of, something I’m sure will never happen again. Focus on...

Keeping pets cool this summer

DOGS

• Keep windows open early while it’s cooler to lower the temperature.

• Put fans on to circulate cool air.

• Use cool mats.

• Leave out fresh cool drinking water, add ice cubes to water to keep it cool.

• Ensure that dogs have access to shaded areas if in the garden.

• Do not walk on hot paths, tarmac etc. Use the back of your hand to check the temperature of the path, if it’s hot to touch – do NOT walk your dog/s.

• Have paddling pools available.

• Keep glass/windows covered if direct sunlight comes in by closing blinds/curtains.

• Ensure dogs are exercised early in morning and later at night when the temperatures are lower.

CATS

• Cats only sweat from their paws so methods of cooling are limited.

• Close blinds/curtains in their favourite napping rooms.

• Creating cool, dark rooms/areas will help.

Cardboard boxes are great for shade and cool spots.

• Leave out lots of water bowls in the garden and upstairs/downstairs.

• Water fountains are great for playing in and drinking from.

• Add ice cubes to water to keep cool.

• Long haired cats suffer, so keeping on top of matts and daily brushes will help.

• On a really hot day, a dry towel cooled in the freezer can be nice for them to lay on.

• Everyone loves a fan – nice breeze, but be careful not to leave your cat unattended with a switched on fan.

We are delighted to reveal the news that, thanks to £4 million Government grant, a wide variety of energy-saving measures are set to be introduced to save 600 tonnes of carbon per year at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.

As well as further enhancing air quality and making the hospital even more energy efficient, the improvements will provide financial savings that can be reinvested into patient care.

The work, which is due to start later this summer, will take 12 months to complete and will include: Installation of a new air source heat pump 1,250 solar panels on roof spaces Improved energy supply and insulation Low carbon generation heating systems

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Chorizo, Spinach & Gnocchi Bake Crispy smokey chorizo. Perfectly cooked gnocchi. Oozy Mozzarella. It doesn’t really get more comforting.

Ingredients 1 Tsp Chilli Flakes 100g Parmesan 300g Mozzarella (2 Balls) 800g Chopped Tomatoes (2 Tins) 200g Spinach Bunch of Basil 2 Cloves of Garlic 1 Chorizo Ring 800g Gnocchi

Method Step 1 - Finely chop the cloves of garlic and chop chorizo into bite size bits.

Step 2 - Place chorizo in frying pan and cook until crispy.

Step 3 - Add garlic, a teaspoon of chilli flakes and a handful of basil leaves. Cook for 30 seconds, and then add your spinach.

Step 4 - Wilt the spinach down, and then pour in your tins of chopped tomatoes. Fill the tins halfway with water, and pour that in. Turn down to a medium heat and allow to reduce and thicken.

Step 5 - While the sauce is thickening, put your gnocchi into a bowl and cover with boiling water.

Step 6 - Once the sauce has thickened remove from the heat.

Step 7 - Drain the gnocchi and pour into a baking dish.

Cover the gnocchi with your chorizo sauce. Flatten it out, and tear two balls of mozzarella over the top.

Step 8 - Cover the whole dish with grated Parmesan, and then place under the grill for 15 minutes or until the cheese is golden and bubbling. Enjoy!

July Gardening Tasks With long mid-summer evenings and many plants blooming, July is a month to really enjoy your garden.

Though, there are always tasks to keep us busy and these are a few to be done this month:

Speedy Seeds

Sow speedy seeds: There are some speedy see varieties that will give results in as little as 6-8 weeks, ensuring a good show of late season colour. If it’s fast colour you are after, sow the following in the next week or so: nasturtiums, night phlox, calendula, poached egg plant, swan river daisy, Californian poppy These are all great options for filling gaps or replacing other annuals such as pot marigolds that have often exhausted themselves by this stage in the year.

Simply scatter your seed where you want them to grow or set them in small pots to get them started and transplant them when large enough to handle.

Lawn Care Like you did in June, you will probably need to mow your lawn once or twice a week. The summer is likely to be in full swing around now. You will notice periods of rapid lawn growth with any good weather. Keep on top of your lawn care routine to ensure that your grass is in peak condition. If your lawn is particularly hard and dry aerate your lawn, by spiking it with a rake or using an aerator. Additionally, mow your lawn in the evening during hot periods as this reduces the risk of excessive dehydration. At this time of year you may also want to apply a fertiliser to your lawn to encourage strong and healthy growth.

Care for the Birds Care for birds and wildlife by cleaning and topping up birdbaths and feeders.

Avoid pruning your hedges until the end of August at the earliest. The main breeding time for garden birds is between March and August so give them time to rear their young.

Conifers in particular provide nesting sites for blackbirds, robins, and greenfinches, as well as larger birds such as sparrowhawks and crows. Top up ponds, ideally with rainwater and remove dead foliage from aquatic and marginal plants. Blanket weed can also be a problem – carefully remove using a garden fork and leave by the side of the pond so any creatures can crawl back into the water.

Want to maximise space in your home?

Well the answer could literally be under your own roof!

Many homes are filled with clutter, and with storage space at such a premium it’s important to use the space you already have efficiently. For many home owners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be unsafe and difficult to access. Coventry based loft installers, Access4Lofts, whose slogan is ‘Creating Space the Easy Way’ can change all that, often in less than a day.

Ricardo offers the following advice on how to make the most of your loft space: 1. Declutter and organise The first step to maximising the space you have is to declutter!

Get rid of anything you no longer need - separating items into things to donate, sell, recycle or dispose of. Next, organise items into what needs to be accessed regularly and what can be put away into storage. Things like out of season clothes, suitcases, toys, sentimental items and seasonal decorations can all be put in the loft in order to free up space in wardrobes and cupboards.

2. Create some floor space One of the easiest ways to create metres of space is to add boarding to the loft. This allows you to safely walk in the loft to store and retrieve belongings. At Access4Lofts we use a raised flooring system whereby the boards are installed over a timber frame or raised legs, to ensure the insulation underneath doesn’t get compressed.

3. Install a ladder Rather than having to get a stepladder out, we can install an aluminium or wooden loft ladder that folds neatly away inside the loft. We can even enlarge or relocate your current loft hatch to make access even easier.

The beauty of having an accessible loft is that it’s so easy to get things in and out as needed - you can think of the loft as an extension of your home rather than somewhere that things go never to be seen again!

4. Invest in plastic storage boxes A great way to keep your loft organised is to invest in some clear plastic storage boxes. They allow you to easily see what is inside and can often be nested or stacked so you make use of vertical space. They also keep your belongings protected and free of dust.

5. Add shelving If you have a modern property with a truss roof, a really effective solution is to add shelving between the trusses, which saves crawling into the eaves to get things and frees up floor space.

6. Don’t forget lighting!

The final touch is to add lighting so that you’re not rummaging around by torchlight! You don’t even need an electrician - we can supply and fit bright battery powered LED loft lights that don’t need any wiring.
