Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the July Edition.... A warm welcome to you all. Can you believe it’s almost time for the school summer holidays?! My youngest will be leaving junior school ready to start high school in September - it hardly seems like 2 minutes ago that I had her in the office alongside my desk in a Moses basket while I worked! So that will be my school walks over, as all 3 will be at high school and apparently you can’t walk a high schooler to school - that’s just not ‘cool’ I’m told :-(. An update on my ankle for those following my accident & recovery: So, we are 10 months on since the accident and I’m still healing very slowly. I’m quite mobile now on the crutches and walking in the house unaided. Its a very slow, frustrating process but other than doing my daily physio, eating well and looking after myself there nothing else that can be done at this stage, so I’m doing as I’m told and trying to remain patient in the meantime. My daily steps are now up to 6,000 and I’m swimming twice a week too, neither of which would have been possible of a few months ago, so it is progress, just very slow progress.
some great local businesses for you, a number of great articles and I’m pleased to say, an ever growing What’s On guide & Community News - a sign that we are slowly but surely returning to a more normal life. Don’t forget that we promote charity and non-profit events free of charge so do get in touch or pass on our details to anyone who is organising anything. I know how much charities have suffered through this pandemic so we will help where we can. Have a July everyone, Anne xxx

The
shopping experience we’ve all been waiting for…..
Nicola Norris has over 30 years of experience working in fashion retail, working for big high street brands and has always dreamed of having her own business in retail. Fast forward to 2021 and she has taken the brave and exciting step of doing just that. Mid-June saw the opening of her very own business, Isabella & Grace Boutique, selling ladies affordable, quality fashion and accessories to make you feel amazing. Catherine and I went along just after the opening to check it out, all in the name of research you understand…… Nicola in one her The name Isabella & Grace comes from Nicola’s teenage daughter, Isabella Grace and if you were to pop along at the weekends you may get to meet Isabella hard at work in the Boutique fabulous outfits helping her mum. The Boutique is based in Shawell just a few minutes from Rugby off the Gibbet roundabout on the A426. The boutique stocks a variety of items from vests, tops, jumpers & dresses to shorts, trousers and skirts, many of which you can mix & match to give you great outfits whatever the occasion. Both Catherine and I treat ourselves to a few items and the quality and fit is great. I felt completely at ease with Nicola as she made suggestions of different colours and styles to try that I wouldn’t normally go for, and as lockdown and this broken ankle has meant I’ve put on quite a bit of weight, which I’m neither happy or comfortable with, Nicola helped me to embrace my current shape and shop to work with it rather than trying to hide it but she did it in such a lovely way that no matter what your height, weight or shape you will feel completely comfortable discussing colours & styles with Nicola. As you can see from the pictures the boutique is light, airy and laid out in colour schemes which is great as you are usually drawn to the colours that suit you, and it makes experimenting with different items and making up outfits much easier. Nicola is initially offering an appointment system to enable customers time to browse, chat and try on without feeling rushed or the worry of crowding with Covid restrictions etc. so if you like good quality clothing at very reasonable prices, or you want some helpful, honest, kind advice on what might suit you get in touch with Nicola. Depending on the time of day you go along there is sometimes prosecco flowing too, especially in the evenings and weekends! Nicola will be doing Facebook Live events to showcase some of the clothes for those that either can’t get to the Boutique or prefer to shop from the comfort of their sofa, so do ‘like’ her page and look out for the details. The website has all the stock listed and keep an eye on the ‘New In’ section as new stock arrives weekly and you could be the first to get your hands on something that catches your eye. Items can be posted for anyone not able to get to the boutique too.

Let’s talk about the M word… We all have a stereotypical image of a ‘woman of a certain age’ fanning herself, with legendary mood swings. But in actual fact, the symptoms can be extraordinarily varied, and range from mild to severe. It’s something that many women just don’t talk about. There seems to be a stigma around the whole subject, and let’s not forget we live in a society where ageing is perceived to be a bad thing, so this whole period of a woman’s life can be extremely difficult. Menopause occurs when your ovaries no longer produce eggs, and your periods have stopped for a year. When this happens, levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone begin to decline. Perimenopause is the term used to describe the time before menopause when hormones begin to fluctuate. Periods may become more erratic, being irregular, lighter or heavier. This creates an imbalance in hormones, and it is this imbalance that causes the symptoms of the menopause. These can last from a few months, to several years and perimenopause typically happens around the age of 45, although can start younger, with menopause happening at an average age of 5055. Estrogen is not just involved in the reproduction system, it protects the brain, bones, skin, heart, and urinary functions too, which is why there are so many symptoms that can be attributed to menopause and perimenopause, that aren’t widely known. Did you know that as well as hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings, (peri) Case Study menopause can cause aches and pains in the joints, fatigue, depression, anxiety, One of my clients was diagnosed with early brain fog, loss of libido, worsening migraines, hair and skin changes, breathlessness, menopause at 42. At this time, her main symp palpitations plus many more symptoms. You can experience some or all of these in was crippling fatigue. So, when her doctor sent tom varying degrees. Of course, we all know someone who breezed through menopause for blood tests, and confirmed perimenopause her it without any issues, and lucky them! But for those of us who are struggling, it really was a bit of a shock. But then, the shorter cycles is an incredibly difficult time indeed, and there doesn’t appear to be much support and heavier periods made much more sense. She out there for us at the minute but let’s hope things change in the future. Certainly tried HRT and it transformed the fatigue, she with programmes like the once presented recently on Channel 4 by Davina McCall function again! It’s not all bad news. Alongside HRT, there are many other things you can do to help mitigate your symptoms. Eating healthier and being more active can be incredibly beneficial. Cutting down on alcohol can help reduce hot flushes. Meditation and mindfulness can be helpful for anxiety, and complementary medicines, such as acupuncture can be effective at counteracting many menopausal symptoms. Case Study 2 Most importantly, let’s get talking about it! I’m on a mission to help women feel A lady of 48 had been feeling unwell for sometime. supported during this incredibly difficult time! None of these could be explained, on 07506 057801, or email info@anne-barnard.com numerous blood tests proved inconclusive and after a number of years of trying to be heard, her GP offered anti-depressants, telling her that when people are depressed they often imagine symptoms. This obviously made her feel worse, as it suggested she was making it all up. She refused the anti-depressants and went on her own quest to search for answers. Eventually a light bulb moment happened when she stumbled upon a menopause symptom checker and ticked 15 of the 25 symptoms, even though her periods were still regular. Fast forward a couple of further GP appointments and lots of research later, and I’m pleased to say she is now receiving HRT in the form of Estrogen Gel and Progesterone tablets. After just 1 month she has seen improvements in her fatigue, her mood has lifted, dry eyes have cleared, nausea is gone and the migraine severity much reduced. She is hopeful that in the coming months, more of her symptoms will be resolved and she can go about her day without any issues.

COMPASSIONATE RUGBY LAUNCHED TO HELP THE TOWN RECOVER FROM THE PANDEMIC
These Circles are a simple, powerful way to get to know each other better, and for everyone to be valued and heard. They are open to everyone – individuals, businesses, community groups, young and old. Many people live with feelings of loneliness and don’t feel they belong to a community. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been many examples of people reaching out to support each other, often connecting with their neighbours for the first time. Compassionate Rugby appeals to this same spirit and hopes to build a movement of compassion to ensure that the Rugby community is able to continue supporting each other. It is being led by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust.
Simon Betteridge, Head of Compassionate Community Development and a Chaplain at UHCW, believes the initiative can help to make a massive difference locally. He said: “Compassionate Rugby is a movement through which it is hoped that people of different ages and backgrounds will join together, learning more about each other. It will create new ways to support one another and celebrate what it means to be part of the community in Rugby."
The Compassionate Rugby team is looking for volunteers to be community befrienders and help create circles of support around each other. The Circles help build a conversation about values and solutions that people take forward and act on together.
The movement kicks off with Story Circles, where people are given a voice and an opportunity to share their experiences with others in their community.

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert
- Finding Balance in Your Life You would think that during lockdown many people worked less hours but interestingly this is not the case. Often working from home has meant much longer working hours – 14-hour days are not good for our health and so this month I want you to consider your work/life balance, because people are working harder and are feeling more stressed than ever. There is concern about redundancy, businesses closing and the threat of loss of earnings. We all need to work at something, it gives life purpose and many need to work to earn a living, to pay the bills and to eat and hopefully have a little fun too, so how can we manage to gain the balance we need in our lives. I read recently that there is no such thing as Time Management, and I tend to agree. We must learn to manage who we are in the world and discover what our priorities are as unfortunately we cannot do everything we would like to do. Obviously, some personalities are more driven and push themselves to the limit; this often causes a lot of stress and anxiety which is bad for our health. I do believe that because of COVID and this awful pandemic many people’s priorities have changed. It is interesting that working from home has really suited a lot of people and why not, much better than long queues in traffic, road rage and frazzled nerves. The downside is those longer hours and the danger that there is a lot less opportunity for social contact which is essential to all of us. We need to strive for that balance in our lives so below are some of my thoughts on how to gain your equilibrium and balance your life, making it less stressful and more enjoyable. 1. Acknowledge and accept that you cannot do everything all the time. You only have so many resources i.e., time, energy, money but mainly time. Learn to stop and take a breath and reassess your priorities and start again. 2. Most important is learning to say NO. Questions like, “Will You?” “I just need a small favour.” “Could you just ….” “You are so good at ….” “There is no one else I can ask!” We have all heard at least some of these pleas for help, but one person can only do so much and when we always say Yes then we are often taken for granted and more importantly we exhaust ourselves trying to please everyone. 3. We all have strategies at work, but I have found that we also need a strategy for our lives to gain balance. It is essential to schedule time for yourself at least 10 minutes each day to find that peace within yourself. Meditation is beneficial and contributes to a healthy mind and body, make this a priority, and notice the difference in your health. 4. Live with purpose – a life orientated around an authentic and passionate purpose is one that is much easier to keep in balance. Acknowledge the importance of social connectedness, physical activity, awareness, learning and giving, as I mentioned last month. 5. Find time every evening to simply relax – turn off those mobile devises and do not be tempted to check for emails. At the weekends ensure you take at least one day to completely rest and plan to do something you really enjoy. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” is the old saying that remains true today. Complete relaxation will help reduce stress and anxiety. 6. Look after your health. Health is wealth and you cannot work or fulfil any of your commitments if you are not well. Health affects the quality of our lives and our work. Sleep is important as is exercise and a healthy diet. 7. To have a balanced life relationships matter so remember to make time for your family and friends. Do not neglect your friendships they are so precious and because of lockdown it has been more difficult to keep in contact with those we love so why not arrange to meet up with someone you have not seen for ages; or have a dinner party or simply meet for coffee. Make finding balance in your life a priority – you know it makes sense!

SEASONAL RECIPES Summer is in full swing and luckily for us, July’s seasonal produce brings a range of colour to liven up dishes, you can literally eat the colours of the rainbow. Expect cherries, hedgerows heavy with berries, fennel and lots of other summer salad favourites including aubergines and courgettes. This months recipes are simple but delicious. Mackerel is always best super-fresh and the season runs from July until February so you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy it. The acidity of the lime and orange works really well with this oily fish. Ingredients (Serves 4)
G r ill e d M ack
4 Mackerel fillets watercress or rocket or lambs lettuce a handful of each 1 orange, skin cut off and segmented Orange Dressing 125ml olive oil 3 limes, 1 peeled and segmented 2 juiced 2 oranges 2, 1 zested and 2 juiced (you need 90ml) 1 clove of garlic crushed 1/2 tbsp dried oregano ½ tbsp 1tsp ground cumin
it h O r a n g w l e ere
Make the dressing by whisking all the ingredients except the lime segments together, season well. Add the lime segments just before serving. Brush the mackerel with a little oil and season well. Heat the grill to high. Grill the mackerel for 5 minutes skin side up or until the fillets are just cooked through - the skin should be nicely blistered. Mix the leaves and divide between 4 plates, add the orange segments and a fillet to each and then spoon over the dressing. A simple yet impressive bake, this strawberry and cream shortcake uses redcurrant jelly and fresh strawberries, but is also delicious with any fruit such as blueberries or blackberries for something a little different. 1 tbs redcurrant jelly 175g (6oz) strawberries 150ml (¼ pint) double cream Icing sugar, for dusting
Take off a quarter of the dough and set aside. Roll out the larger piece to an 18cm (7in) round and pinch the edges for decoration. Put on a baking sheet. Roll out the smaller piece to an 11cm (4½in) round. Put on a baking sheet and cut into 6 wedges. Chill for 30 mins to 1 hr. Set the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4. Bake shortcake for 15-20 mins. Take the wedges out and cool on a wire rack, and cook the large round for 5 minus longer. Add 2 tsp hot water to the redcurrant jelly, to soften it. Brush some over the large shortcake round. Hull strawberries, slice in half and arrange in circles on the round, alternating them cut-side up, then cut-side down. Brush with some redcurrant jelly and pile another couple of layers of strawberries on top. Whip the cream lightly, so that it just holds its shape. Put spoonfuls in the centre of strawberries. Arrange shortbread wedges on top of the cream, then dust them with icing sugar.

JULY GARDENING TASKS This month is all about maintaining your blooms, nurturing your plants, and providing your garden with the care it needs to prevent drying out and becoming damaged during the warmer months.
Deadheading Roses
In July roses are looking at their best and it is just as important to keep dead heading to get as many blooms as possible. There is a specific way to dead head roses which is that it is best to snap off the spent flower, not prune away, it will break just below the flower bud. An equally well-respected way to dead head roses is to prune back from the dead flower to the next leaf joint.
Cut Lavender
Cut lavender for drying, choosing newly opened flowers for the best fragrance. Hang up in a cool, dark place to bring the beautiful scent into your home.
Watering Without an adequate supply of water plants may become stressed, stunted, wilt or even die. To check if plants need watering, put your finger into the top of the soil to check for moisture. Large leaved plants need much more water than smaller-leaved varieties. Newly planted trees, shrubs and perennials will also be in particular need of your help through dry spells. Plants in containers are most dependent; in summer check their soil daily even when it rains. Terracotta pots are prone to evaporation - dampen the pot as well to keep roots cool and damp. Where possible porous containers such as terracotta should be lined with polythene (avoiding the drainage holes) to prevent water loss through the sides of the container via evaporation. Be environmentally responsible by using water wisely and using ‘grey’ water or stored rainwater. Water generously, less frequently, not little and often. This encourages the development of deep roots which over time will be able to find their own water and become drought tolerant. A good technique is to create a ‘moat’ over the rooting zone by ridging up the soil about 30cm away from the main stem all the way around the plant. Each time you water, the ridge prevents the water from running off so that it soaks in where it’s needed most. Water plants in the evening when it will not immediately evaporate and avoid water droplets from heating up and damaging the leaves. Direct water at the base of the plant - it doesn’t need to go all over the leaves.
