Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the July Edition.... Well, where to start? I, probably like many of you, am finding life quite surreal at the minute. Due to Covid-19 we haven’t been able to print or safely deliver the magazine since the March edition, and as a result my business was temporarily closed. I’ll be honest with you, the break has been wonderful, I’ve enjoyed time with my family, at homes doing various jobs from my never ending list and chilled time in the garden. I hope you have all stayed well and enjoyed quality time at home too. One thing that we missed by not being able to print the May edition was being able to shout about our 15th Birthday. A huge achievement for a small, local business, I’m sure you will agree so I thought I would still mention it on the front cover as a belated Birthday. I wasn’t sure my business would survive these challenging times so I’m delighted to be bringing you this edition. Most of the businesses advertising are now back open too and would welcome any business/enquiries you may have. Our local economy needs a boost right now so please do consider shopping local - you won’t regret it. We also have a number of lovely articles for you this month, many from local businesses who have adapted to cope with Covid 19, and are all worth a read.

So for now I am back to work Anne part time while I manage my 3 children who are all home schooling and continuing to help in my local community as I have been since lockdown started. I’m now off shopping for 2 local vulnerable residents. Stay safe and my very best wishes to you all, Keep smiling,

Anne xx .

Our belated Birthday:

The magazine has been running since May 2005, a whopping 15 years ago! We started out delivering to just 1,000 homes and have continually expanded over the years and now deliver to 16,750 homes. The magazine is delivered by my own team of distributors - usually someone who lives local to your area/village.

Misty Double Glazing?

Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!

Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.

The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.

Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units

This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.

Clearly a great service!

An update theandMiniature Like us onon Facebook follow us on TwitterTrains at Rainsbrook Valley Railway.... Due to Covid-19 Rugby MES are still not able to run their Public Days with train rides. The society relies heavily on the ticket sales of these public days to fund the cost of maintaining the tracks, trains and railway itself. If you have been to any of their monthly open days then you will know what a great Sunday afternoon out this is and hopefully it won’t be too long before we can all enjoy this again. In the meantime an Emergency crowdfunding appeal has been created, with every penny donated helping to ensure the railway can continue to bring hours of enjoyment for all. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rmes

Wearing a Mask We can all play a role in reducing the spread of coronavirus and protecting each other, so to help keep you safe in hospital we have made few changes and thought we would let you now about them so you don't have any surprises. Everyone now needs to wear a face covering when visiting our hospitals as a visitor or outpatient. Face coverings can be cloth and/or homemade. Face coverings worn as part of religious beliefs or cultural practice are also acceptable, providing they are not loose and cover the mouth and nose. We are asking that you plan in advance and bring a face covering with you whenever possible, but if you do not have one available, when you come to hospital, please see a member of staff on arrival and we will provide you with one. Follow the guide below for the correct way to wear a face mask All visitors will also be expected to comply with existing social distancing and hand hygiene measures in addition to the face coverings while in the hospital setting. Further information can be found online at www.uhcw.nhs.uk/caring-for-you/coronavirus/visiting

You will see: Social Distancing signs and floor markings right across the sites Increased hand sanitiser areas Fewer seats in waiting areas Perspex screens on receptions desks More staff and patients wearing personal protective equipment At UHCW NHS Trust our priority is your care and we have done this to help keep you as safe as possible when you need us the most Further information can be found online at www.uhcw.nhs.uk/caring-for-you/coronavirus/visiting

5 steps to get back to fitness after COVID-19 It’s no secret that physical fitness is profoundly important for our physical and mental health. But, returning to exercise after lock down isn’t necessarily going to be a straight forward affair, even if we haven’t succumbed to Corona itself. Laura Oxley, Principal Physiotherapist and co-owner of Omnia Physio, discusses the effects of lock down and COVID on physical fitness and how to resume activity safely. After three months of lockdown, getting back into exercise and regaining fitness may seem like an impossible challenge. Some have struggled with a lack of motivation to exercise, perhaps because they miss the social aspect of group activity, or they

were working towards a particular goal, a wedding, or holiday for example, which lockdown has put paid to! Others have been physically unable to exercise due to ill health or contracting COVID. Suffering with coronavirus has caused many people to require prolonged bed rest, whether in hospital or at home, which may contribute to low mood, anxiety, weight loss, muscle weakness and reduced bone density. Other side effects of COVID are fatigue and breathing difficulties due to lung damage and reduced strength of the respiratory muscles. In fact, Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation have suggested the early research shows a severe case of the coronavirus may cause ongoing breathing difficulties.

How to pick up your activity levels again With the right approach, it’s easy to get back on track. These 5 tips will help ensure that progress is smooth and you don’t risk injury or relapse: yourself 1 Seta goal!

2 Start slow!

It is much easier to find motivation when you are working towards something. We are seeing plenty of people in clinic who have deferred sporting events and are now looking to resume their training for these. Equally it might be managing to run around the block or even walk to and from the allotment again.

You can’t just pick up where you left off. It will take time to build back up, and the danger of pushing on too fast is an injury which puts you back out of training again. If setting off for a jog seems a tall order at the moment, why don’t you try the Sitting Pilates session on the Omnia Physio YouTube channel to get you started?

3

Listen to your body!

If you were unfortunate enough to get COVID, you may find that you can’t do very much activity at all before feeling totally wiped out. It is important to accept that this is perfectly normal for recovery after COVID. Take a step back, and try again with something easier.

enough 4 Getrest!

5 Stay positive!

The immune boosting effects of sleep are well known, as is the role of rest in the healing process. Taking regular rest days and getting enough sleep are vital, whatever you are training for.

Pace yourself, recovery is a marathon not a sprint. If you start taking small steps, you may be surprised how quickly your body responds and your fitness returns.

How can physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapy has been recognised as having vital role in helping people recover from COVID by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Physiotherapists are trained within the NHS giving them experience of all aspects of rehabilitation including respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions. These skills are now invaluable helping people who have had COVID or whose recovery from other conditions has been affected by lockdown. Please get in touch if you need help – we offer a FREE 15 minute telephone consultation and a reduced price COVID rehabilitation package to help get you on the road to recovery. We also offer video consultations and home visits if you are unable to come into our town centre clinic. Simply email us at info@omniaphysio.com or call 07843 424020 for more information.

Doom - Gloom - Zoom - BOOM! How my little fitness dream has survived lockdown Closing the hall doors behind me, and ending my fitness classes indefinitely, marked one of my gloomiest days in a very long time. Over the past 18 months, I had worked so hard to grow my customer base from scratch and I had recently moved my busiest class to a larger hall, in order to accommodate the increasing numbers and new equipment I had invested in. In addition, my one to one personal training clientele was steadily growing – I felt like I was living the dream..! As the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic unravelled and the country was then forced into lockdown, I’m not ashamed to admit that I felt completely and utterly overwhelmed. Not only was I now homeschooling our two children – there are several reasons I didn’t pursue a career in teaching, my lack of patience being the main one! – most of my personal training clients had to stop training with me for financial reasons, many of them self-employed or furloughed. On-line fitness was suddenly everywhere. And becoming so much more readily available! Whilst gyms were forced to close their doors, there was a huge surge in activity amongst local fitness providers, using all forms of marketing, advertising and social media to keep themselves ahead of the game; updating their websites, launching YouTube channels and offering free classes. How on earth could I possibly keep up with that?

So I’m carrying on for now with my online classes until we are able to do otherwise; this week I’m even branching out into some small beginners’ Fitness Camps outdoors. I’m excited, grateful and positive about the future, whatever the new normal is. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all my lovely team for supporting me. Joe Wicks I am not. But I’m passionate, hard working and care immensely about all my clients. There’s a real community and family feel to these classes.

And that’s something you won’t get on YouTube.

Karen

And then there was Joe Wicks. Everywhere. Thankfully my lovely clients (and long-suffering husband, Jon!) gave me the kick up the backside I needed, reassuring me that the majority of my clients would carry on with my classes and would be happy to continue paying for them. From the outset, I had been nervous about giving classes away for free; in my opinion this completely devalues the work that a fitness provider does. So I reduced my standard class fees, introduced a loyalty discount for those participating in more than one class a week and offered them a free mid-week Core class as a thank you for their loyalty and support. And that’s how my little dream has survived! I’ve had to be creative without all my usual space and equipment; invest extra time finding more challenging exercises and exploring new formats to keep them on their toes! We have trained with saucepans, baking trays, tea towels, baked beans and posh mayo! We have sweated together, supported each other, cried with laughter and had all our usual banter and more. They have had to endure me looking increasingly like Joe Exotic, yet still they support me!

For a full list of my classes please call or see my facebook page, details below.

Rugby Borough Council granted planning permission for Houlton School on Friday 27 September, enabling works to begin on Rugby’s newest secondary school. The new facility will see Houlton’s Grade II-listed Rugby Radio Station building transformed into a six form entry secondary school, providing nearly 1000 school places, plus a sixth form. Opening in September 2021 for Year 7, the school will grow each academic year with a new intake of Year 7 pupils. The school is a joint venture between Houlton’s master developer Urban&Civic, Aviva Investors, Warwickshire County Council (WCC) and the Department for Education (DfE) , and will be run by the Transforming Lives Educational Trust (TLET); the organisation already delivering Outstanding OFSTED-rated education at Rugby’s Ashlawn School. Preparatory works including some demolition, remediation and clearance will begin immediately and the main contract to convert the listed building and construct the new buildings will begin in the New Year. Residents and prospective pupils can view a 3D model and CGIs of Houlton School on display at The Visitor Centre in Dollman Farm, Houlton. Richard Coppell, Development Director for Urban&Civic said; “It is fabulous news that the planning application for Houlton School has been approved, which marks a major milestone in the development of Houlton. The school will become an important statement building in the heart of Houlton’s growing community and provides us with a rare and exciting opportunity to turn a piece of Rugby’s rich history into a stateof-the-art facility for our local residents and families across the town.” James Higham, CEO of the Transforming Lives Education Trust, commented: “This is an incredibly exciting moment for Houlton School and the team here at TLET, who are working closely with Urban&Civic on designing, building and opening the new school. Not only will the location be an inspirational place to learn in, but we will also be building on the experience and expertise of our high performing schools in the Trust to develop strong community and the highest education standards.” Following the opening of St Gabriel’s CofE Academy at Houlton in September 2018, Houlton School is the second of four schools which will be delivered at the development. Once complete, Houlton will also feature 6,200 new homes, a nursery, a GP health centre, a convenience store and 500 acres of extensive walkways, cycleways, wildlife corridors, ponds and green spaces. For more information, visit www.houltonrugby.co.uk. To register your interest in Houlton School, email infor@tlet.org.uk.

Free Fabulous Cake recipes for any occasion Karen of Cakes Fabulous Cakes has adapted her business through these uncertain times and offered free online Cake sessions for 6 weeks via Facebook Live. The sessions were aimed at children but can obviously be made by anyone so if you fancy doing some baking here are two of her fabulous recipes: Buttery Biscuits and Brownies. Check out Karens Facebook page: ECakes Fabulous Cakes for more recipes. Karen is currently offering Drip Cakes for special occasions, these have proved popular during lockdown as people have ordered and had them delivered to loved ones that they can’t be with to celebrate in person.

Enquiries for Wedding cakes for 2021 onwards are welcome too.

Fabulous Buttery Biscuits This recipe is so easy make and can be cut into any shapes for decorating. If you do not have any cutters, just a pizza wheel to cut into strips then squares would be ideal or why not use the top of a jar or tin to cut round with a knife. Ingredients (Makes about 24) 200g soft butter (can use margarine) 200g caster sugar 1 egg, beaten 400g plain flour (plus a little for rolling out) Method • Cream the butter and sugar together with a spoon, but do not over mix. • Beat in the egg. • Add in the flour and combine until it forms a ball of dough.

• Wrap the ball in cling film. • Chill in the fridge for about an hour. Go and enjoy a juice or cup of tea. • Roll out onto a floured surface about 5mm thick. • Cut out the shapes and place on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. • Cook at 180C or 160C fan oven or Gas 4 for about 8-12 mins depending on the size of the biscuit. As we chilled the dough the biscuits should not spread too much. • They should be golden in colour. • Leave to cool.

Decoration 100g icing sugar Sprinkles or whatever decorations you have in the cupboard • Mix the icing sugar with 1 tablespoon water (might need slightly more) should be runny but not too watery. • Colour if you have any food colourings. • Use a spoon to spoon icing onto each biscuit and add sprinkles. Decorate as you wish dependant on your shapes. You could also use cherries, chocolate drops etc depends what you have in your cupboards.

Fabulous Brownies Ingredients 150g plain flour 75g cocoa 130g brown sugar 290g caster sugar 175g butter 3 eggs 125g dark chocolate roughly chopped 3 Cadburys crème eggs quartered (as best you can) – or your favourite Easter equivalent

Method • Preheat the oven to 160C or 140C for fan assisted Gas 3. • Lightly grease a 20cm square tin or something similar and line with non stick baking paper. • Place the flour, cocoa, both sugars, butter and eggs in a large bowl and mix until smooth. • Add the chocolate and stir to combine. • Spread the mixture into the tin. • Evenly sprinkle the crème egg over the top. • Bake for 50 minutes – 1 hour or until the brownie is set to touch. • Allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before slicing into squares and serve warm!

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert suggests

a new healthier lifestyle Being in lockdown has given us all chance to reflect and a lot more time to take more care of our health but I do suspect many people have put on weight, as eating has been one of the few pleasures we have been able to indulge in. Now we are getting out more; baring our arms and legs and our clothes have become lighter and more close-fitting there can be that sense of panic about those extra bulges! I want to challenge you not to start a new fad diet but to change your lifestyle for good which will change your health and your life and give you more energy and vitality. Diets do not work and recent research which was widely publicised even suggests that diets are bad for our health and I agree completely. There are so many fad diets that promise quick weight loss but these usually result in quick weight loss for a while which is actually mostly water and then weight gain which often means that you end up a few months later even heavier than when you started – No thank you this is not what you need! What is the secret of a successful lifestyle change that will not only improve your health but also help you shed those unwanted pounds? It all starts with you and by this, I mean it starts with you really wanting not just to lose weight but to start thinking about looking after yourself and your health. Our health is the most precious thing we have and if you are carrying more than 12lbs of extra fat then you are putting your health at risk. Being overweight stresses the body and puts a strain not only on the joints but also on your internal organs and increases your risk of cardiovascular disease. If you are more than two stone overweight and feel tired – it is not surprising because it can be compared to you carrying a small child around with you all day, exhausting! Let us start by looking at you and where you are now. Are you serious about what and how you want to look and feel? Great because to begin we need to be honest and stop the mental subterfuge; if you are overweight admit it today and follow these steps to changing your lifestyle.

Step 1 - Acknowledge you are ove rweight and decide to change your lifes tyle. There is no quick fix this is a journey tow ard a healthier, fitter, and slimmer you. Step 2 – Decide you are worthy of the time and effort it will take to change. Many people who are overweight have emotion al issues they need to address at the sam e time. Step 3 – No more junk and proc essed food that is bad for health. I want you to think about everything that goes in you r mouth and ask yourself is this food doin g me good nutritionally? Step 4 – For the next six weeks mak e your new lifestyle your priority – set you rself three goals write them down, be focussed and work toward them with determination. You can change. Step 5 – No alcohol for at least seve n days – it is a poison to the body and full of calories. You need to be in control of you r body and mind and when we drink alcohol it dampens our senses and makes us more vuln erable to eating the wrong things. Step 6 – Eat slowly and relax, enjo y your food and be grateful, many people in the world are starving and have no choice about what they can eat. Never eat when you are angry or upset, we cannot digest food when we are stressed or tense. Watch your por tion sizes – we all eat too much in the western world. Step 7 - Drink plenty of water – 6 to 8 glasses every day. Most people in this cou ntry are dehydrated which reduces concen tration and can often create confusion abo ut feeling hungry when in fact we are thirs ty. Step 8 – Exercise – as I always say; we were born to move, and exercise give s us energy so please “move that body!” You need to get that heart pumping for 30 minutes at least five times ever week. Exercise is som ething you should do without question, like cleaning your teeth.

Prevention is better than cure so honour your body mind and spirit and start your healthy lifestyle today – you are worth it. Live with joy and health, Elizabeth Beetham www.powerforhealth.com healing@powerforhealth.com Tel: 07773 790736

Getting the best health outcomes for local people... Ajit Barot, Barrie Bemand and Barry Cockcroft are members of the Rugby Health & Care Improvement Forum (RHCIF), a small group of retired NHS & Social Services professionals. They spread information about the NHS and Social Care and the need for long term investment & planning to our MP, leaders of the local NHS, other politicians and the press. Their aim is to support our NHS & Social Care and try to keep the general public informed. Having lived in Rugby for over forty years I am well aware that when it comes to our healthcare, we can be fiercely independent, but the reality is that the provision of high quality services and better outcomes for patients is now intrinsically linked to that of the populations around us. For many years there was a real determination to retain all services at St Cross but that is now out of the question, for many reasons, but our local hospital has become a significant part of the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHC&W). Modern medical treatment is now delivered in a much more technological environment with a greater degree of specialist skills being utilised. Some of this technology and special skills could not be fully utilised in such a small unit as St Cross. Nearly 85% of the non-urgent orthopaedic surgery provided across the Trust is carried out on the St Cross site and to a very high standard. People from across Warwickshire travel to Rugby for hip and knee replacements, CT and MRI scans as well as some cardiac procedures confident that the outcomes achieved by a very high performing team will deliver those, so important, good outcomes. Across the country the concentration of expertise in centres for treating acute and hyper acute stroke services has also demonstrated how more lives can be saved. There are major opportunities to further develop services on the St Cross site that will benefit the people of Rugby and surrounding areas. The Coventry site of UHC&W, widely known as Walsgrave, was built as part of the ill conceived Private Finance Initiative which means that new capital investment on that site is very difficult. St Cross does not suffer from the same blight which gives the Trust much more flexibility to develop services. The Trust has plans to grow services on the St Cross site and we think there will be exciting developments over the next few years although for some things people will have to travel to other parts of the county to access the highest quality care. I often hear people complain about the travel times across Warwickshire, especially when using public transport, but these distances pale into insignificance compared to the journeys people in eg, Cornwall or the Highlands have to make. What is important is the outcome. Healthcare is changing, populations are growing and ageing, we have to understand that the most important thing is the outcome and even though more and more treatments are being offered closer to home, for some more specialised services it may mean more travel and more linkage between public transport and the healthcare system. But let us try and change the mindset. Rugby, Coventry, Nuneaton and South Warwickshire are part of one healthcare community, with very specialised treatment sometimes being provided even further away, so lets help people improve services for everyone and not continue the old fashioned Rugby versus Coventry way of thinking but perhaps focus more on working with our neighbouring communities to deliver the best outcomes for all.

Barry Cockcroft, on behalf of the Rugby Health and Care Improvement Forum

Susannah’s Story

Local Rugby resident Susannah Archer has a real eye for detail when it comes to photographing wildlife and you can help support her chosen charity by purchasing some of her wildlife cards. More on that a little later, but first let me tell you a little bit about this incredible lady... Aged just 26, Susannah suffered a stroke which took away 85% of her vision and left her severely sight impaired with just central vision – something this incredible lady tells me, ‘Actually, I think it helps my photography as I can only see what’s directly in front of me so nothing in my peripheral vision distracts me’. Susannah was a new mum to her son when she suffered her stroke and yet her strength and resilience meant she dusted herself off and get on with life; being a new mum and working too – all with just 15% vision. Then at the age of 40 Susannah was diagnosed with stage 4 Cancer, a rare type Melanoma, and has gone through numerous treatments, all of which took place at Oxford Churchill Hospital, a specialist Cancer Centre for Susannah’s cancer type. After the 2013 diagnosis Susannah continued to work for a few years but more recently she is having quality time at home with her son and husband and taking every opportunity to travel, enjoy life and take photographs. Susannah has always liked photography but 2 years ago decided to invest in what she calls a ‘proper camera’ and soon realised that this was a good focus and distraction to help her through her many months & years of treatment. With no formal training in photography, she is simply self-taught through her love of wildlife and wanting to capture what she sees. Many of Susannah’s friends and family would always comment on her photos about how good they are and how they should be shared in some way for others to enjoy and so in April Susannah started to sell her packs of wildlife cards, donating the proceeds to charity. In the short time between April and June she has raised over £800. The cards come in packs of 8, with envelopes and are blank inside for your own message. It seems that the timing has been perfect with many people using them to keep in touch with loved ones through lockdown with a nice handwritten note. I myself being one of these people as I saw a post from Susannah on Facebook, ordered 2 packs as my daughter adores animals & wildlife and she’s really enjoyed using them to write to her nanny, aunts & friends during these bizarre times and they’ve all loved receiving them too.

Susannah’s chosen charity is Maggie’s Oxford, a cancer support centre who help patients as well as their loved ones with a drop-in centre, workshops, financial advice, benefits advice, counselling and much much more. Susannah and her family use Maggie’s and have benefited immensely from their wonderful services and she is delighted to be able to fundraise for them using her incredible photography skills. Packs of the 8 cards (inc.envelopes) are £10 including postage and can be ordered by getting in touch with Susannah at: Email: susannahmcarpenter7@yahoo.co.uk Or through twitter, where you can see lots of her wonderful photography: D @SusannahArche11 Attached to the hospital is Maggie’s – A cancer support centre offering support, advice, financial advice, workshops and much, much more – not just to cancer patients but also to their families and loved ones too.

Below are just a few of Susannah’s other stunning photographs.
