3. Have a strategy for shopping and cooking. Plan your meals for the whole week so that you are not tempted to backslide into bad habits. Take pleasure in preparing food – cooking should not be a chore, think of it as a way of expressing love for your family. 4. Exercise regularly, it helps lower blood sugar levels, keeps bowels working efficiently, boosts immunity, burns calories, encourages a good night’s sleep and improves your sex life! 5. Breathe properly and work on improving your posture. Many people shallow breathe which can cause fatigue and loss of concentration because it does not oxygenate the blood efficiently. Deep breathing is a wonderful way of relaxing the body. Poor posture can create many health issues, including back and neck pain so think about how you are walking and sitting and make adjustments if required. 6. Learn about the mind body connection. I believe we are all on a spiritual journey and it is important to understand how powerful the mind is in creating many of the situations we find ourselves in. Listen to your body and become aware of what does you good and what is toxic to you and smile more it can change your life. Smiles and laughter improve your immune system and that has been scientifically proven! 7. Get balance in your life – too much work is really not healthy particularly if you are stressed so learn to laugh and relax. Why not try yoga this year its good for the body and mind and a wonderful way of improving your health.

Help birds in winter by placing fat blocks in wire cages. Create your own fat blocks by melting suet into moulds such as coconut shells or logs with holes drilled in. Alternate different recipes to entice a range of birds; peanut cakes for starlings, insect cakes for tits and berry cakes for finches. Put out finely chopped bacon rind and grated cheese for small birds such as wrens. Although fat is important, do also provide a grain mix or nuts to maintain a balanced diet. Sparrows, finches and nuthatches will enjoy prising the seeds out of sunflower heads. No-mess mixes are more expensive but the inclusion of de-husked sunflower hearts means there is less waste. Inferior mixes are often padded out with lentils. Use wire mesh feeders for peanuts and seed feeders for other seed. Specially designed feeders are needed for the tiny niger seed, loved by goldfinches. Feed placed on a wire mesh held just off the ground will entice ground-feeding birds such as robins and dunnocks. Thrushes and blackbirds favour fruit. Scatter over-ripe apples, raisins and song-bird mixes on the ground for them. Kitchen left-overs such as stale bread, cooked veg, cooked rice, crushed eggshells, believe it or not, can be a great source of calcium for birds when they’re nesting, and can also help with their digestion. Consider planting berrying and fruiting trees for future years.

Villages enjoy Christmas Carols together... It’s wonderful to see that community spirit is still very much alive and kicking, even in the dark, cold winter evenings people from local villages come out together to sing and spread a little Christmas cheer!
‘Carol Singing Night’ in Dunchurch The Dunchurch Festival Group had a lovely time at their Carol Singing Night and many turned up to have a good sing song of Christmassy traditional carols to get them on the mood for the run up for Christmas. There were two Santa’s this year (Dad and Lad) and a motorised sleigh that provided tunes also from its “in sleigh entertainment system” while they had their half time refreshments of mulled wine and mince pies. The night ended at the Dun Cow where they parked the sleigh outside and stood on the stairs and gave it their best. Customers must have appreciated the singing (it must be the beer) as all together they collected £250 that will be donated Hope 4 Rugby a homeless charity in the town. ‘Carols by the Tree’ in Bilton For the 3rd year Anne Hartfield and Ajit Barot organised a village Christmas Tree on the Green for all to enjoy. The Annual ‘Carols by the Tree’ was held on Thursday 6th December and was a lovely, well attended evening with many families attending to enjoy listening to Bilton Brass Band, singing to a number of carols and enjoying FREE mince pies, chocolates and Mulled wine. The wonderful tree and event only happens as a result of the local communities wonderful donations & support and through Anne & Ajit’s hard work. This years event was very well received and plans are already in place to do it all again in 2019! Reflect on 2018 and consider what you would like to achieve in 2019. Making a list of things you would like to achieve is far more positive than writing a list of what you want to stop doing. Items on your list could be anything from finding a new item for the home, decorating a particular room, going on a trip to somewhere new, trying a new activity/adventure to something bigger like buying a new car, making a will or even moving house. Whatever you want to achieve, big or small, it’s great to have a list to keep reminding you and a great sense of achievement when you get to tick something off!
Make a Memory Jar This is a great idea for families. Find a jar, pot, or something similar. Get the children to make a label for it - 2019 Adventures- is a great one. Each time you go somewhere or do something great, it may be something simple like going to the cinema or a day at a theme park, an afternoon at a park or a big family holiday. You could each write a thought down, add a photo or an entry ticket etc to the jar and then at the beginning of next year or better still on New Years Eve sit together as a family and read through all that you did. It’s a great way to remember all the fabulous family times you’ve had and helps to remind the children of all you have done, especially if they are young.

As the cycle of our life continues, most of us went through the ‘boom’ at Christmas so now we prepare ourselves for the ‘bust’ and that’s not just those getting divorced! Yes we’ve hammered our livers, hammered our bank accounts and hammered out every ounce of goodwill to one and all and now all we’ve got is the icy breeze of debt, blues and the gnawing feeling that we need to shake our selves out of this cycle and into good health again, or for as long as our over ambitious new year’s resolutions will hold. With this in mind I may have mentioned before that I always feel cheated by salads dressed up as main meals, especially in winter, but this is a fully loaded royal variety show of a salad so enjoy it and the feeling that your on the mend!
The Ingredients A breast of chicken: It’s a breast, its chicken. Buy from a reputable butcher, a disreputable one may lead to poisoning and an overall lack of quality in the finished dish. Red cabbage and a red onion: Red are better and make sure they’re crisp Leaves: Go mad and try a few new ones Cucumber: Preferably straight and true as it cuts better Butternut squash: Preferably straight and true as this will also cut better Tomato: Cherry tomatoes or an unpronounceable variety you have always wanted to try Garlic granules: You can use fresh if very finely crushed by why bother when you can get granules?! Cumin powder: This is cumin which has been ground! Vinaigrette: A combination of garlic, olive oil, Dijon mustard, white wine vinegar, maple syrup or Agave (see earlier recipes for method) The Method First skin and dice the butternut squash scooping out the seeds. Scatter on an oven tray, douse with rape seed oil and sprinkle over the garlic granules and cumin powder with some serious seasoning and bake for about 45 minutes at 180 degrees. Shred the cabbage with the onion and some apple if you have some handy. Mix together with some olive oil, red wine vinegar and maple syrup then set aside. Get the breast out and slice into thin strips, pour some oil over them before seasoning well with some garlic, mixed herbs and a good amount of seasoning. Sear both sides in a frying pan using cold pressed rape seed oil if possible and set down on a baking tray. Place on the middle shelf of the oven at about 160-170 degrees for 15-25 minutes. Make the Vinaigrette by first dissolving the mustard in the white wine vinegar then adding the oil, maple syrup, garlic and seasoning. Once the butternut is cooked, chop up the cucumber and tomatoes to your satisfaction and mix in a bowl with the leaves and Vinaigrette. Put this into a nice bowl and top with the chicken then butternut before the cabbage. Consume with a salt restoring aqua tonic or wine if you are still drinking! If you haven’t been to ‘three’ yet then make sure you do while you still can as we look to take on a new place and new challenge.

Houlton residents reveal community Bright Bricks LEGO® masterpiece Children of Rugby’s new neighbourhood, Houlton, have completed a LEGO® giant mosaic of the development, following an ongoing community project this year. Organised by master developers, Urban&Civic, with Bright Bricks LEGO®, children and their parents placed the final piece of the artwork to reveal a colourful street scene depicting the first homes built at Houlton. Created over a series of free, family events held at the development’s vibrant community space, the Barn, each child worked on an individual part of the mosaic, and then pieced them all together at an event during October half term. The masterpiece stands at an impressive 2.1 metres by 1.1 metre and will be proudly displayed at Houlton’s Barn in the New Year for visitors to see. Ella Rose, young resident of Houlton, said: “It was a really fun experience and a great chance to meet new friends. I’m very happy to have been a part of this lovely event in our new community.” Galina Bardarska, Visitor Centre Manager at Houlton, added: “After several fun-filled sessions with the children and their parents over the school holidays this year, we are incredibly proud and delighted to finally reveal the mosaic masterpiece. The project provided the perfect opportunity to bring together new residents to get to know one another, and the finished piece will look wonderful displayed in the heart of the community. “With a wide range of free events and fantastic facilities on offer, we are dedicated to creating a strong community spirit at Houlton, and are very much looking forward to welcoming more families as the neighbourhood continues to grow,” she added. As well as regular community events and activities, the new neighbourhood is also home to a wide range of amenities on site, including award-winning eatery The Tuning Fork, the recently-opened play park, the new primary school, St Gabriel’s CofE Academy, and extensive walkways and green spaces. Once complete, Houlton will also house two further primary schools, a secondary school and an eight-GP health centre, in addition to 6,200 new homes.
