Hi Everyone and welcome the February Edition...

Did you know that its Rugby (the game)’s Bicentennial year? Rugby School have an amazing schedule of events planned for the whole year to celebrate so there will be lots to see, do and get involved in. Their website (details on the front page banner) has all the events listed and we will be helping to promote events throughout the year too. It will be a great way for the community to come together and celebrate our wonderful town and the birth place of the game. This month the magazine welcome lots of wonderful new businesses alongside our amazing long standing advertisers. I hope you enjoy reading through and making a mental or physical note of any services you may need as well an enjoying the local articles we have for you. Be sure to tell any businesses you use where you saw their advert. This helps not only the advertiser, as they will know what marketing is working for them, but it also helps my little business too, and as you know, I’m passionate about bringing people together and even after 16 years it still warms my heart to know that local businesses are being successful.

Have a wonderful February and enjoy Valentines Day if you celebrate it.

Best wishes,

Delicious Seasonal Recipes Lancashire Hot Pot for Two

The secret to a Lancashire Hot Pot is don’t rush it. A long, slow cook in the oven creates a tender tasty dish.

Ingredients (Serves 2)

1/2 Tbs olive oil

350g diced lamb (3/4 pound)

1 onion, peeled and sliced

1 carrots, peeled and grated

1/4 medium swede peeled and grated

300ml lamb stock (can use chicken stock)

1/2 Tbs Worcestershire sauce

1 sprigs of fresh thyme

350g of potatoes, peeled and cut into thin slices

softened butter

sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method

Pre-heat the oven to 165*C/325*F/ gas mark 3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet. Add the meat in batches and fry it until browned on all sides. Remove with a slotted spoon to a large casserole dish (one with a lid) as it browns. Set aside.

Once all the meat it browned and removed from the skillet add the vegetables to the pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring them occasionally. Return the lamb to the skillet and pour over the stock. Add the Worcestershire sauce and season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix it all in well and then carefully pour the mixture back into the casserole dish. Tuck the thyme into the mixture, burying it.

Cover the top of the mixture with a layer of half of the sliced potatoes. Season with salt and pepper and then dot with butter. Finish layering with the remaining potatoes and adding a final dusting of salt and pepper and dot once again with some butter. Put the lid on.

Bake in the heated oven for 1 1/2 hours. Remove the lid and bake for a further hour until the meat is very tender and the “thatch” is nicely browned in places and tender as well. Serve hot spooned out onto hot plates along with seasonal green vegetables on the side and plenty of crusty bread and butter to mop up the delicious juices.

Enjoy!

February Gardening Tasks

It would be fair to say that by February most of us are keen to fast forward to spring for the warmer weather. But for those still wanting to get out in the garden there’s the usual digging, leaf clearing and weeding to be done!

Sowing Seeds

Though it’s still too cold to direct sow seeds outside, there are plenty that you can start off inside in February. A propagator is ideal if you have one, though a warm, bright windowsill is fine, too. By sowing seeds early on in the year, you can be enjoying beautiful blooms and tasty crops for a larger part of the year. The season of interest can then be extended by carrying out repeated sowings from March onwards.

Cosmos are easy flowers to grow and they look great in borders or meadows. Go for annuals like Cosmos bipinnatus or C. sulphureus, and choose singleflowered varieties like ‘Fizzy Pink’ to please pollinators. The seeds need light to germinate, so sow on top of seed compost in a tray, then prick out when large enough to handle. Place in to individual pots when bigger. As the seedlings grow, pinch out the tips to encourage bushier plants.

Create Hedgehog Highways

Many of our garden creatures need to move about freely between gardens. Hedgehogs can walk a mile or more a night looking for food and a mate. You can help wildlife by creating safe corridors from your garden to the one next door. This is a great activity to do with your neighbours to connect your gardens. You can create highways and byways whenever you like, but it is usually easiest in winter when there are fewer leaves on the trees and shrubs. Think like a hedgehog or frog! Looking at your space, if you were a hedgehog or a frog, how easy would it be to make your way around the garden and in and out of it? How could you make access easier? Add gaps at the base of your wooden fences. Before you start, check that your neighbour is comfortable, and make sure any gaps won’t allow pets to escape. It’s also important to not create gaps that will lead wildlife onto busy roads.

Lawn Care

In mild districts worms can become active by the end of the month. Any casts should be swept away as soon as they appear to keep weeds down and prevent them being trodden into the lawn. Worms are a great help with drainage, so they should not be considered at pests.

Treat moss filled lawns with a proprietary moss killer, if the weather is settled, first raking up the worst patches with a lawn rake. If you need to returf or sow bald patches, weed and fork them over first to break up the soil.

Scarify old lawns that have become thatchy, with a spring-tooth rake, to removing the dead or decaying vegetation at the base. Rake first in one direction and then at right angles.

Broken lawn edges can be repaired using a sharp spade or a half-moon edging-iron to cut the turf so that the broken edge can be turned into the lawn and a fresh, new edge left at the outside. Use sieved soil to fill up the hole where the turf was broken.

The Friends are seeking more volunteers to support to patients at St Cross

19th January 2023

Press release – The Friends are seeking

Press release – The Friends and the community say Thank You NHS

Over the Festive Season a group of volunteers from the community joined with regular Friends Volunteers to bring some extra cheer to patients who were not well enough to be discharged home.

The Friends are now seeking to recruit more volunteers to provide company, conversation and even a creative outlet through playing bingo, board games and art for patients on a regular basis.

Last year the Friends of St Cross received a significant donation from the organisers of the Heroes Ball.

This month we are re-launching our Mealtime Companion service for volunteers who would like to provide patients with assistance with eating their food or just need a little bit of encouragement! Not all patients have relatives or friends that are available to give this support and so a team of volunteers help on several of the wards at St Cross.

Volunteers are always in demand for many of our other services which have expanded greatly over the last 2 years. You can find out more by downloading our application pack from https://bit.ly/3Q5Ax6t.

The Heroes Ball was event for the benefit of staff and volunteers at St Cross that was scheduled to take place at various times over the last 18 months. The organisers decided that the monies they had raised from the community, to fund the event, should be donated to The Friends specifically for the benefit of the staff and volunteers working at St Cross who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

Focus on... LOCAL BUSINESS NETWORKING

We are looking for new members

RIBN (Rugby Independent Business Networking) is an independent business networking group run by local businesses for local businesses, and we’re looking for new members. Our meetings aren’t about pitching to lots of other local businesses. We encourage members to share stories, ask for help and build connections with other local businesses so that we’re all working together to gain success. This is all done with plenty of laughs, a really good breakfast, and the odd social event thrown in to ensure we can become friends as well as business contacts.

RIBN was established in 2009 when a few local business owners came together to discuss how they weren’t getting what they wanted from business networking. They decided to create a new group that was deliberately designed to support businesses across Rugby.

As an independent group not associated with any other organisations, we run our meetings to ensure that they are always offering the best for businesses across our region. Our members take it in turn to chair meetings, meaning that everyone has a chance to have their say and get known. This group isn’t run by a management team, it’s run by local people who want to do business with local people.

Your first meeting is completely free, including a buffet breakfast. We meet every other Tuesday at the Draycote Hotel between 7am and 9am. Our upcoming meeting dates are:

• 7th February

• 21st February

• 7th March

• 21st March

• 4th April

• 18th April

THEATRICAL SCIENCE FOR ALL AGES

PRESENTS...

THE SNOW BEAST Macready Theatre, Friday 17 February. A scientific spectacle comes to Rugby this February!

‘The Snow Beast’ is a collaboration between critically acclaimed Scratchworks Theatre Company & award-winning writer Jack Dean. This family friendly theatre show (ages 6+) brings live science experiments to the stage as we follow a female scientist, Faina, who sets out on a quest to find the mystical Snow Beast.

In the snowy town of Seldomberg test tubes bubble, experiments explode and new inventions whirr for the Science Academy’s Final Exams. But Faina’s got a problem... her project has unexpectedly burst into flames!

Desperate to pass her Final Exams, Faina sets off on a perilous expedition to find the legendary Snow Beast. With help from her owl assistant Maude, they encounter extraordinary spectacles and mountainous obstacles as they battle through the wild, wintry wilderness in search of the truth.

Can you help Faina and Maude overcome the scientific puzzles along the way? Does The Snow Beast even exist?

The show is interactive allowing the children to get involved with the live science experiments in the production. It’s also packed full of inventive storytelling, puppetry and beautiful Scandi-inspired live music & songs by Lucie Treacher.

‘We’re committed to helping to inspire young minds in the world of science through our theatre work. To keep the fun going after seeing The Snow Beast, we’ve created an activity pack suitable for schools & at-home experimenting! Laura Doble, Co-Artistic Director

Scratchworks Theatre Company is a female-led theatre ensemble from Exeter. Using diverse theatrical styles, the company creates original stories with their unique blend of live music, puppetry and comedic physical theatre. The Snow Beast is supported by Arts Council England and was originally developed with Barbican Theatre, Plymouth. Since forming in 2013, Scratchworks has enjoyed sell-out shows at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, London’s New Diorama Theatre, Salisbury Playhouse & VAULT Festival. The Snow Beast Spring Tour 2023 includes Theatre Royal Plymouth, Artsdepot London and Theatre Royal Bath. Performance Details: Macready Theatre, Rugby, CV22 3DG.
