Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the February Edition of The Rugby Register Well what a month! Not one I would like to repeat in a hurry. Started of great: kids back to school, routine resumed, all was good until I fell down the bottom few stairs hurting my back, shoulders and damaging my foot. So far I’ve had a week and a half on crutches, a boot on my foot and with the other foot still bad from an injury back in November I’m quite a mess! Luckily doing the magazine requires me at my desk a lot so that’s been fine, although keeping your foot elevated under a desk is not very comfy. Anyway, enough of me feeling sorry for myself, take a look at our fantastic jam packed February magazine. We have a number of wonderful new businesses advertising for the first time with us as well as our regular ones and some great articles for you to read through. Community News is full of wonderful Charity and Not for Profit events happening around the Borough - do remember that these events are listed FREE of charge, so if you know anyone involved in local charity event do pass on our details.

Tuesday - ‘pancake day’ to you and me. Oh and as its a leap year, I wonder if there are any females out there planning on proposing on the 14th? There’s a little Valentines and Leap Year history for you inside this month, which dates back further than you might think.

Wishing you all a wonderful February whether you celebrate Valentines or not, and enjoy a pancake or 5 on the 25th!

Anne xx

A Christmas Thank You Rugby Rokeby Lions club thank the local organisations, supermarkets, and the residents of the local area for their support this Christmas in helping the Club raise an amazing £16,410 the money going to help and support those less fortunate in and around the town. As a club we understand that it is a busy and expensive time of year for everyone and are always amazed at the generosity of the local community. For the club members it is a commitment of twenty-five nights around the streets of the town and fourteen full days collecting outside the supermarkets which stretches our resources to the limit but is very satisfying when you see the faces of the children on meeting Father Christmas. We would ask if there is anyone who has benefited from the club or could just give a little time next year to help us to contact Rugby Rokeby Lions Club, details are on both their web site and Facebook page and where future events planned can be found. If you need support from the Lions please contact us via the sites above and your request will be given careful consideration. Thank you again for all the support you give to your local Lions Club.

Misty Double Glazing?

Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!

Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.

The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.

Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units

This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.

Clearly a great service!

New Independent Travel Agent opens in the Town

Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter

Millington Travel recently opened their latest branch here in Rugby Town Centre. Based in the Swan Centre, Millington Travel are delighted to be able to offer you a complete travel agent service, from brochures & advice to booking your perfect holiday or trip. Having worked for Coop Travel and Thomas Cook in Rugby you may also recognise a number of the staff. Experts in holiday ideas and inspiration Their experienced, knowledgeable staff don’t just say that a holiday destination is good because they enjoyed it there – they listen to what matters most in a holiday to you, before anything else. If you love the heat, you’re probably not going to be interested in an Icelandic cruise. Similarly, if you can’t stand temperatures above the average for the UK, then somewhere like Dubai might take you too far out of your comfort zone for example. Then, there’s the type of place you would like to stay in. Whether you’re going for a luxury honeymoon or a family safari, where you stay in terms of location and accommodation, is going to make a big difference to how comfortable you feel whilst on holiday. Types of Holidays City break, safari, beach, ski-trip or cruise – whether you’re going away for a week or a month, they can put together the best deal for whatever type of holiday or break you are looking for. If you’re not sure what kind of holiday you would like, but know when you would like to go away, pop in and speak to us. We’ll get an idea of the type of thing that you would enjoy and then find you options for the best holiday types and deals for you. Millington Travel have a number of branches in the Midlands giving you the benefit of a wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw upon. Everything is protected by Abta and Atol, giving you complete peace of mind too when enquiring and booking. Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert shares her knowledge about you Immune System This time of year is always difficult with the short grey days and an awful lot of coughs and colds about. Personally, I would like to hibernate to avoid any nasties, but this of course is not possible. Luckily, we are all in possession of an amazing immune system, and the following will hopefully give you confidence that it is not inevitable that all of you will catch a cold or worse. The body’s immune system is a highly complex and ingenious multi-layered system of biological defences. Its primary purpose is to defend the body from bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, toxins, cancerous cells and other disease-causing agents. The immune cells of this defence system are located all over the body; the majority can be seen in the thymus, the spleen, the lymph nodes, the bone marrow, the tonsils and the gut. Immune cells are also found in the blood and these are the white blood cells. There are many types of white blood cells but the immune response is associated with the Lymphocytes, which are divided into three main categories; B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells which are carried in the bloodstream to locations in the body where they are needed, for example sites of injury or infection. The natural killer cells are capable of spontaneously killing certain virus-infections or cancerous cells. A simplified explanation of the many layers of the immune defence system is that it is divided into two categories; non-specific immune responses and specific immune responses. The non-specific immune responses are at the fundamental level of the body’s immune defence system and include the physical barriers of the skin; the tiny hairs called cilia in the respiratory tract and other areas of the body which expel foreign particles from the body; and chemical defences such as stomach acid and bacteriadestroying enzymes in saliva and tears. Another layer of non-specific immune defence which is more complex is provided by several different types of white blood cells namely the monocytes and neutrophils. These blood cells are capable of ingesting and destroying bacteria and foreign particles, this process is called phagocytosis which means ‘cell eating’. They also help other white blood cells to kill micro-organisms and are responsible for producing important chemical messenger molecules called cytokines which co-ordinate different aspects of the immune response.

The specific immune responses are incredibly sophisticated and can recognize and respond specifically to every type of foreign material they meet. The specific immune response can make minute distinctions between material that forms part of a person’s body and material that is of foreign origin. It can perform this distinction because the immune system contains within it a detailed image of your unique body. A foreign substance that invades the body and generates a specific immune reaction as it encounters the immune system is called an antigen. The specific immune response can be divided into two main categories humoral and cell-mediated immunity. Humoral immunity is responsible for attacking antigens that are floating around in the body fluids surrounding the cells of the body. Humoral immunity produces antibodies using B-lymphocytes. These antibodies are a type of protein molecule and are the body’s primary defence against bacterial infection. Each antibody is specifically designed to attack each antigen. The other main category of the specific immune response is the cell-mediated immunity this is mainly responsible for attacking antigens inside the cells, for example viruses. The T-lymphocytes are responsible for this process, they can recognize and kill target cells, for example those that are infected with viruses and foreign cells, i.e. tumours. The immune responses are indeed one of life’s miracles. This incredibly ingenious biological system intricately connected to both the brain, body and mind protects us from the onslaughts of many millions of invaders which attack us daily. The important thing to remember is to choose good fresh food, increase your Vitamin C intake, keep warm and “Move that Body!”

Build raised beds now, before the growing season gets underway. Raised beds allow you to make an early start in the garden; the soil warms up faster and raised beds drain quickly too, so they’re a great way to deal with clay soils. Make your bed as long as you like or build multiple raised beds for different crops. The depth of the bed can vary, but 6 inches of soil should be the minimum. Most garden plants need at least 6 to 12 inches for their roots, so 12 inches is ideal.

February in the garden is filled with anticipation. The first signs of life are beginning to emerge as the plants shake off their winter dormancy. Splashes of colour illuminate those dark corners of the garden.

d is e

A whole host of plants can happily grow. Soft fruits: Such as strawberries, currants, raspberries and blackberries; Almost any vegetable can be grown in raised beds; Herbaceous perennial: Raised beds are a good idea for establishing a cutting garden for cut flowers; Alpines: Ideal for alpines that relish good drainage; Small trees and shrubs: Depending on how big your beds are, you may be able to grow some smaller trees and shrubs.

Has your patio developed a green slim over winter? There is no need for an expensive pressure washer or any chemicals. The simplest and safest way to clean paving is to scrub it with soapy water. Some people will swear that hot soapy water is more effective than cold, but in reality, any soapy water will do.

P a ti o

Cle a nin

Use wash-up liquid or an acid-free soap-based floor cleaning product. If there is any hint of a warning about use of the particular product with limestone or marble floors, don’t use it. Other than a bucket in which to keep the soapy water, the only equipment needed is a long handled stiff brush, that is, one with tough, rough, thick bristles. Mix a cup of washing up liquid mixed with a bucket of water, apply liberally to patio and get scrubbing. You will be suprised how quickly you can transform your green slippy patio to it orginal condition with a bit of elbow grease.

. . . . e n i t n e l Be my Va

Well it’s a leap year so I wonder how many proposals there will be this February from the ladies? Every fourth year, an extra day in the calendar resynchronizes earthly time with cosmic time. This year, on February 29, a day is added to our calendar, creating a ‘Leap Year’. In a curious, centuries-old custom, ladies are traditionally given the opportunity to boldly, and legally, propose marriage -- throughout the year. Valentines Day, some say, goes back to Saint Valentine who was supposedly a Roman Priest who performed seret weddings in the 3rd Century. Imprisoned in the home of a noble, he healed his captor’s blind daughter, causing the whole household to convert to Christianity and sealing his fate. Before being tortured and decapitated on February 14, he sent the girl a note signed “Your Valentine.” Some accounts say another saint named Valentine during the same period was the Bishop of Terni, also credited with secret weddings and martyrdom via beheading on February 14. Unfortunately for anyone hoping for a tidy, romantic backstory to the holiday, scholars who have studied its origins say there’s very little basis for these accounts. In fact, Valentine’s Day only became associated with love in the late Middle Ages, thanks to the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer. (see opposite) Today however its a more commercial affiar with thousands of cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts shared with loved ones. A day to show our affection and love to partners, husbands, wifes, girlfriends, boyfriends and still in some cases just people we ‘fancy’! If you are celebrating Valentines Day this year be sure to think carefully about your gift and don’t get too swept up with whats ‘expected’ or the ‘norm’, sometimes its nice to think think of something a little different and more personal.

Geoffrey Chaucer (ca. 1343-1400) The Parliament of Fowls A garden saw I, full of blossomy boughs Upon a river, in a green mead, There as sweetness evermore enough is, With flowers white, blue, yellow, and red, And cold well-streams, nothing dead, That swimming full of small fishes light, With fins red and scales silver bright.

Of instruments of strings in accord Heard I so play a ravishing sweetness, That God, that maker is of all and lord, Had heard never better, as I guess. Therewith a wind, scarcely it might be less, Made in the leaves green a noise soft Accordant to the fowls' song aloft.

On every bough the birds heard I sing, With voice of angels in their harmony; Some busied themselves birds forth to bring; The little coneys to here play did hie. And further all about I could see The dread filled roe, the buck, the hart and hind, Squirrels, and beasts small of gentle kind.

Th'air of that place so a-temperate was That never was grievance of hot nor cold. There wax also every wholesome spice and grass; No man may there wax sick nor old; Yet was there joy more a thousandfold Than man can tell; never would it be night, But always clear day to any man's sight.

The Call of the Wild: Release Date: 14 February The Plot: Adapted from the beloved literary classic, The Call of the Wild vividly brings to the screen the story of Buck, a bighearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail delivery dog sled team and later its leader Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime, ultimately finding his true place in the world and becoming his own master. Sonic The Hedgehog: Release Date: 14 February The Plot: Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise

Birds of Prey: Release Date 7 February The Plot: You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho and the mafia princess? ‘Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.
