Hi everyone and welcome to the

December, Christmas Edition!

What a wonderful response we had to our Children’s Competition to Design the Front Cover. It’s been by far our busiest competition to date and choosing a winner was made all the more difficult with so many amazing entries. Thank you to each and everyone who entered.

ARE YOU WINTER READY? With the dark nights upon us, thoughts are turning to winter. You may have stocked up on wood for the log burner and may have even bought a few early Christmas presents, but have you thought about how your window treatments could help to keep you warm and cosy this winter?

We all know how to keep our bodies warm; we put on more layers. So why not apply that to our windows?

The majority of homes, old and new, now have double glazing which is a great way to prevent heat loss.

However, a bare window still feels cold to the touch and will allow a lot of preventable energy transfer into the cold outdoors.

So how can we make our window treatments as energy efficient as possible?

Curtains

There are several ways to upgrade the simple curtain to improve heat retention: Thermal lining – A thermal blackout lining will not only keep heat in during the winter but also keep heat out during the summer.

Blackout linings are usually white or cream and also protect fabric and furniture from harmful UV rays.

Interlining – An additional blanket-like layer sandwiched between the curtain fabric and lining, interlining also adds body and softness to curtains for a luxurious look and feel.

Fabric weight – For the most chilly of homes, a heavier weight curtain fabric such as a velvet can also help. Combine this with a lightweight interlining and thermal blackout lining for maximum effect.

Puddling and pelmets – To truly cocoon the coldest of windows, add a pelmet to the top of the curtain and puddle the fabric on to the floor. This works particularly well in period homes and bay windows.

Shutters

Shutters – Either in faux or real wood – can help to control heat flow within a room. In comparison to other blinds such as Venetians, shutters encase the window, allowing only the slightest amount of air flow when closed.

Tests on faux wood shutters showed a difference of 3ºc between a room with shutters closed compared to shutters open.

Duette blinds

Perfect for conservatories, bi-fold doors and roof windows due to their lightweight nature, Duette blinds give a sleek, modern look. Their unique cell-in-cell or honeycomb design keeps warmth in the room, reducing heating costs by up to 46%.

Watch the radiator! – If the radiator is below the window don’t cover it with full length curtains. Curtains should finish just above the radiator to prevent heat loss. If you love long curtains, a thermal-lined roman blind in the recess will keep the room cosy.

We are Mental Health Together, a Warwickshire based community group that is open to everyone...

We all experience fluctuations in our mental health and wellbeing, yet many of us still find it hard to speak out openly about this.

In the UK around 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health condition each year. Many more of us will experience times when our mental barometer won’t be at one hundred percent; times when we are feeling anxious, insecure or just trying to cope with the many issues life throws at us.

The ethos of our friendly group is to bring people in the local community “together”; hosting events and activities which encourage open conversations about mental health in a safe, supportive, stigma-free environment.

We focus on the positive role of physical exercise in enhancing mental health e.g. short local walks, and #runandtalks in partnership with England Athletics. In addition we hold craft sessions, gardening, helping with Repair Cafe and coffee chats – we are always open to new ideas too!

Opportunities to relax, chat and interact are at the heart of every event and activity that we offer.

It is natural to feel nervous about joining a Together activity for the first time, but please don’t worry. Our volunteers have lived experience of mental health affecting their lives, and they will be there to welcome, support and enjoy the events and activities with you.

These short dark and rainy days certainly don’t encourage us to get outside and exercise. At this time of year, all most of us want is to snuggle by the fire and eat because eating does provide a glimmer of comfort, particularly as Spring seems like a distant dream.

Please don’t think that because its cold we can eat and drink more alcohol without piling on the pounds. Do not use the weather as an excuse for overeating and not exercising because when January arrives you will only be annoyed when you get on those scales. December can be dangerous because it is easy to get into the don’t care mindset. We all think this sometimes – “I will sort myself out in January. Next year I will really take control of my health and weight.” Please consider, your health is the most precious thing you have so take care of it always, do not wait for the New Year. This year avoid the December over-indulgence trap.

There are so many parties and celebrations going on in December but thank goodness for Christmas it gives us something to focus on beside the forthcoming election and the dreary winter days. Christmas is a joyful time for most people, even though it has become very commercialised in recent years.

This is the season of goodwill and merriment, Christmas Carols and smiling faces. Enjoyment and fun, seeing family and friends; a time of giving and sharing food and wine with loved ones.

Sad to say but it is important to remember that alcohol is not particularly good for us. Alcohol dehydrates the body, is very fattening because of its sugar content and puts a strain on the liver. To avoid dehydration, have at least one glass of water for every glass of alcoholic drink. Start the evening with a non-alcoholic drink, we are often thirsty so gulp down that first glass of wine and then our resolve not to drink too much dwindles. Milk thistle is a good tonic for the liver if you do over do it.

We all eat too much so don’t let Christmas be another excuse for piling far too much food on your plate. Prior to Christmas, start re-training yourself by having smaller portions. I am realising that two meals a day is adequate for someone of my size and age, even though I exercise a lot. It is so easy to gain weight and takes an awful lot of effort to shed those unwanted pounds, so be vigilant and don’t wait until the New Year.

There is nothing worse than feeling too full of food to move from the Christmas table and only feeling capable of going to sleep. This Christmas could be different if you resist the overeating and take the whole family out for a lovely walk after lunch instead. Give it a try and let me know how you get on.

We live in an affluent society, safe and secure from most dangers. It saddens me to see people living on the streets of many of our towns so perhaps this Christmas we can open our hearts to those less fortunate and instead of over-indulging why not embrace the idea of goodwill to our fellow men. Everyone has a right to a roof over their heads, especially at this time of year.

Society is suffering from the legacy of selfish, instant gratification, dehumanising social media and a lack of love and care. This Christmas, buy less and give more, realise that giving does not have to be in monetary terms. Not everyone is able to donate, but think, a warm smile, a friendly invite can make an enormous difference to a lonely person in the community, so do what you can. Kindness costs nothing and the rewards are great.

It is hard to understand how the Christmas Festivities have come to signify such shallow representations of our humanity; this year why not make a difference. As I am writing this article, I am also chastising myself for all the many overindulgences I have committed this year and hoping by expressing my thoughts, I will take time to put into practise some of these ideas. Have a wonderful Christmas.

Gardening Jobs for December December is the quietest month in the garden but if you do need to leave all the preparation for festivities and get out in the fresh air. Here are a few suggestions to get busy in the garden.

Apple and pear trees trained as free-standing bushes are best pruned every winter to ensure a good cycle of fruiting wood. If you don’t prune them they become less productive and congested with old branches. The aim is to create an open goblet shape with a framework of four to five main branches. You will see a healthier plant and better fruit next season.

Now is the time that you gardeners should have time to do a little maintenance on your gardening tools. Begin by washing tools to remove dirt and debris. If rust is present, remove with sandpaper or a wire brush. Sharpen hoes and shovels with a basic mill file. Finally, rub the surfaces of your tools with an oiled rag coated in light machine oil. This will help seal the metal from oxygen and extend your tools’ lives for another year.

It’s important that birds get water through winter. They are so easy to make and do not have to be expensive. All you need is a dish that is easy to clean, has shallow sloping edges and a textured edge (for grip). Ideally a dish large enough for several birds to bathe at once and with water about 2- 10 cm deep will attract a variety of species lay a few flat stones to line the dish. These stones and lid can all be easily removed and cleaned with a brush every few weeks. Pop your bath near some shrubbery so that the birds can retreat to safety if they feel threatened. Branches nearby can also be very useful for the birds to perch on whilst rearranging their feathers.

SEASONAL RECIPE Here are a couple of easy recipes that are so quick and easy for those Christmas gatherings.

Brie & Onion Bread Ingredients

500g loaf - White Sourdough 1/2 cup (160g) caramelised onion relish 1 cup (100g) grated mozzarella 125g brie, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon thyme leaves 1 tablespoon Olive Oil 1/2 teaspoon sea salt flakes

Method Preheat oven to 200C. Line a baking tray with 2 sheets of foil large enough to enclose the loaf.

Use a large serrated knife to cut into the top of the loaf diagonally in a checkerboard pattern (be careful not to cut all the way through).

Spread caramelised onion into the cuts. Fill with mozzarella, brie and thyme. Brush loaf with oil. Sprinkle with sea salt.

Wrap the loaf in the foil to enclose. Bake for 20 mins or until cheese melts. Uncover and bake for a further 5 mins or until crispy. Serve immediately.

Pomegranate Guacamole Ingredients - Serves 6

2 medium ripe avocados 1/3 cup diced red onion 1/4 cup chopped coriander 2 Tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds Chips or assorted crudité for serving Method Halve and pit the avocados then scoop out the flesh into a large bowl.

Add the red onion, coriander, lime juice, salt and pepper to the bowl, mashing the mixture together with two forks until it reaches your desired consistency. Stir in the pomegranate seeds then serve the guacamole with assorted crudité. It’s as easy as that!

Volunteers sought to befriend patients over festive period The Friends of St. Cross and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust are launching a joint appeal for volunteers to visit and befriend patients in the Hospital of St. Cross over the festive season.

Patients at the hospital, which is managed by UHCW, often enjoy having a conversation with someone other than a health service professional. Volunteers will be provided with guidance on ways to open up conversations which can be rewarding for both the patients and befrienders.

Judith Lewis, Modern Matron at the Hospital of St Cross, said: “Unfortunately we will have patients at St. Cross who will not be well enough to be discharged home before Christmas. They may also not have friends or relatives nearby who can visit them. This is a great initiative which was first launched in 2017 by the Friends of St. Cross and we are delighted it is being repeated this year.”

Kristine Davies, Head of Voluntary Services for UHCW NHS Trust, said: “Patients enjoy playing games such as dominoes or scrabble, or even using the art cart which is available.

“Our activity co-ordinators work with ward staff and volunteers from the Friends of St. Cross and the Good Times Project to keep patients occupied while they’re in hospital. We have seen the benefits these initiatives bring to patients all year round.

“Christmas can be an especially lonely time, so we are really pleased to team up with the Friends of St. Cross again to reach out into the community for more volunteers over the festive season.”

Special arrangements are in place so people won’t have to be a registered volunteer with the Friends of St. Cross or the Trust.

Befrienders will need to state which days they are available during normal visiting hours of 2pm to 4pm or between 6.30pm and 8pm from December 21 to January 1 inclusive.

Willy Goldschmidt, Chairman of the Friends of St Cross, added: “Last year we had a great response, with 65 people volunteering and many coming to visit patients on two or more occasions. This year we would like to do even better!

“We look forward to welcoming people from across the community who would like to take up this opportunity to make a difference for patients in our lovely hospital.”
