Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome to the
December, Christmas Edition! What a wonderful response we had to our Children’s Competition to Design the Front Cover. It’s been by far our busiest competition to date and choosing a winner was made all the more difficult with so many amazing entries. Thank you to each and everyone who entered. Catherine and I are pictured holding just a sample of what we received! We hope you like our winner on the front cover. Take a minute to look at it and spot all the detailing with the elves in and around the tree etc, we think its wonderful. Our very worthy runners up can be seen inside the magazine along with a sample of some of the other entries too. e Catherin Anne &
Did you make the Christmas Cake from the recipe we shared last month? If so, I hope you are now onto the fun part of feeding it brandy each week! Mine smells amazing, I can’t wait to tuck into a slice on Christmas Day evening with a cup of green tea.
Sticking with the festivities for a minute please take some time to read through the article on page 19 from St.Cross, this outlines what you can go to them for. There’s a lot of mis-information out there about who and what St.Cross treats, so please take time to read and save this information as its up to date and direct from St.Cross themselves. Fingers crossed none of us need it, but its better to be informed, just in case. Myself and Catherine would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Here’s to 2020!
Anne xx

Misty Double Glazing?
Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!
Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.
Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units
The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear. This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks.
OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE
I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.
Clearly a great service! Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

ARE YOU WINTER READY? With the dark nights upon us, thoughts are turning to winter. You may have stocked up on wood for the log burner and may have even bought a few early Christmas presents, but have you thought about how your window treatments could help to keep you warm and cosy this winter? We all know how to keep our bodies warm; we put on more layers. So why not apply that to our windows? The majority of homes, old and new, now have double glazing which is a great way to prevent heat loss. However, a bare window still feels cold to the touch and will allow a lot of preventable energy transfer into the cold outdoors.
So how can we make our window treatments as energy efficient as possible?
1
Curtains
There are several ways to upgrade the simple curtain to improve heat retention: Thermal lining – A thermal blackout lining will not only keep heat in during the winter but also keep heat out during the summer. Blackout linings are usually white or cream and also protect fabric and furniture from harmful UV rays. Interlining – An additional blanket-like layer sandwiched between the curtain fabric and lining, interlining also adds body and softness to curtains for a luxurious look and feel. Fabric weight – For the most chilly of homes, a heavier weight curtain fabric such as a velvet can also help. Combine this with a lightweight interlining and thermal blackout lining for maximum effect. Puddling and pelmets – To truly cocoon the coldest of windows, add a pelmet to the top of the curtain and puddle the fabric on to the floor. This works particularly well in period homes and bay windows.
2
Shutters
Shutters – Either in faux or real wood – can help to control heat flow within a room. In comparison to other blinds such as Venetians, shutters encase the window, allowing only the slightest amount of air flow when closed. Tests on faux wood shutters showed a difference of 3ºc between a room with shutters closed compared to shutters open.
3
Duette blinds
Perfect for conservatories, bi-fold doors and roof windows due to their lightweight nature, Duette blinds give a sleek, modern look. Their unique cell-in-cell or honeycomb design keeps warmth in the room, reducing heating costs by up to 46%.
Watch the radiator! – If the radiator is below the window don’t cover it with full length curtains. Curtains should finish just above the radiator to prevent heat loss. If you love long curtains, a thermal-lined roman blind in the recess will keep the room cosy.
So there are 3 ideas of how to insulate your home this winter. And what’s more, they are better for the pocket and the planet too! By Kate James About Kate James – With over 20 year’s design experience, Kate specialises in interiors and window treatments. Kate is co-owner of Curtains by Design in Rugby.

We are Mental Health Together, a Warwickshire based community group that is open to everyone... We all experience fluctuations in our mental health and wellbeing, yet many of us still find it hard to speak out openly about this. In the UK around 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health condition each year. Many more of us will experience times when our mental barometer won’t be at one hundred percent; times when we are feeling anxious, insecure or just trying to cope with the many issues life throws at us. The ethos of our friendly group is to bring people in the local community “together”; hosting events and activities which encourage open conversations about mental health in a safe, supportive, stigma-free environment. We focus on the positive role of physical exercise in enhancing mental health e.g. short local walks, and #runandtalks in partnership with England Athletics. In addition we hold craft sessions, gardening, helping with Repair Cafe and coffee chats – we are always open to new ideas too! Opportunities to relax, chat and interact are at the heart of every event and activity that we offer. It is natural to feel nervous about joining a Together activity for the first time, but please don’t worry. Our volunteers have lived experience of mental health affecting their lives, and they will be there to welcome, support and enjoy the events and activities with you. Here are details of just a few activities that will be happening soon. Please Join us at:
Walks: When: Every Thursday Morning at 10.15am Where: Rotating between Jephson Gardens, Leamington and St Nicholas Park, Warwick (Please refer to Facebook page for dates) What: An easy 45 min walk suitable for pushchairs / wheelchairs - always followed by a drink in a local café. When: Every 4th Wednesday, 2-4pm Where: Starting from Tithe Café, Southam What: short walk to Holy Well or similar followed by tea and chat in the café.
Books Blogs & Beverages: When: Every 2nd Wednesday, 2-4pm Where: Tithe Cafe, Southam What: We are about doing things together, learning something new, chatting together and making friends. Share any Books, Blogs, Poems and Stories that have inspired, helped or encouraged you.

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert asks - What will you do this Christmas?
Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health Journalist and Wellbeing Expert Asks What will you do this Christmas? These short dark and rainy days certainly don’t encourage us to get outside and exercise. At this time of year, all most of us want is to snuggle by the fire and eat because eating does provide a glimmer of comfort, particularly as Spring seems like a distant dream. Please don’t think that because its cold we can eat and drink more alcohol without piling on the pounds. Do not use the weather as an excuse for overeating and not exercising because when January arrives you will only be annoyed when you get on those scales. December can be dangerous because it is easy to get into the don’t care mindset. We all think this sometimes – “I will sort myself out in January. Next year I will really take control of my health and weight.” Please consider, your health is the most precious thing you have so take care of it always, do not wait for the New Year. This year avoid the December over-indulgence trap. There are so many parties and celebrations going on in December but thank goodness for Christmas it gives us something to focus on beside the forthcoming election and the dreary winter days. Christmas is a joyful time for most people, even though it has become very commercialised in recent years. This is the season of goodwill and merriment, Christmas Carols and smiling faces. Enjoyment and fun, seeing family and friends; a time of giving and sharing food and wine with loved ones. Sad to say but it is important to remember that alcohol is not particularly good for us. Alcohol dehydrates the body, is very fattening because of its sugar content and puts a strain on the liver. To avoid dehydration, have at least one glass of water for every glass of alcoholic drink. Start the evening with a non-alcoholic drink, we are often thirsty so gulp down that first glass of wine and then our resolve not to drink too much dwindles. Milk thistle is a good tonic for the liver if you do over do it. We all eat too much so don’t let Christmas be another excuse for piling far too much food on your plate. Prior to Christmas, start re-training yourself by having smaller portions. I am realising that two meals a day is adequate for someone of my size and age, even though I exercise a lot. It is so easy to gain weight and takes an awful lot of effort to shed those unwanted pounds, so be vigilant and don’t wait until the New Year.
There is nothing worse than feeling too full of food to move from the Christmas table and only feeling capable of going to sleep. This Christmas could be different if you resist the overeating and take the whole family out for a lovely walk after lunch instead. Give it a try and let me know how you get on. We live in an affluent society, safe and secure from most dangers. It saddens me to see people living on the streets of many of our towns so perhaps this Christmas we can open our hearts to those less fortunate and instead of over-indulging why not embrace the idea of goodwill to our fellow men. Everyone has a right to a roof over their heads, especially at this time of year. Society is suffering from the legacy of selfish, instant gratification, dehumanising social media and a lack of love and care. This Christmas, buy less and give more, realise that giving does not have to be in monetary terms. Not everyone is able to donate, but think, a warm smile, a friendly invite can make an enormous difference to a lonely person in the community, so do what you can. Kindness costs nothing and the rewards are great. It is hard to understand how the Christmas Festivities have come to signify such shallow representations of our humanity; this year why not make a difference. As I am writing this article, I am also chastising myself for all the many overindulgences I have committed this year and hoping by expressing my thoughts, I will take time to put into practise some of these ideas. Have a wonderful Christmas. Live with joy and health. Elizabeth Beetham www.powerforhealth.com Healthy Living for Life Tel: 07773 790736

Gardening Jobs for December December is the quietest month in the garden but if you do need to leave all the preparation for festivities and get out in the fresh air. Here are a few suggestions to get busy in the garden.

Apple and pear trees trained as free-standing bushes are best pruned every winter to ensure a good cycle of fruiting wood. If you don’t prune them they become less productive and congested with old branches. The aim is to create an open goblet shape with a framework of four to five main branches. You will see a healthier plant and better fruit next season.

Now is the time that you gardeners should have time to do a little maintenance on your gardening tools. Begin by washing tools to remove dirt and debris. If rust is present, remove with sandpaper or a wire brush. Sharpen hoes and shovels with a basic mill file. Finally, rub the surfaces of your tools with an oiled rag coated in light machine oil. This will help seal the metal from oxygen and extend your tools’ lives for another year.
B ir d B a t h s
It’s important that birds get water through winter. They are so easy to make and do not have to be expensive. All you need is a dish that is easy to clean, has shallow sloping edges and a textured edge (for grip). Ideally a dish large enough for several birds to bathe at once and with water about 2- 10 cm deep will attract a variety of species lay a few flat stones to line the dish. These stones and lid can all be easily removed and cleaned with a brush every few weeks. Pop your bath near some shrubbery so that the birds can retreat to safety if they feel threatened. Branches nearby can also be very useful for the birds to perch on whilst rearranging their feathers.

You may be able to release cash to pay off an existing mortgage, provide you with a regular income to top up your pension, carry out some home improvements or treat yourselves to that holiday that you have always wanted. Grosvenor Independent Financial Planning is your local advice service that gives you access to a range of Lifetime Mortgage providers. To be eligible for equity release you must be aged 55 and own your home. We do not arrange Home Reversion Plans. We will only recommend Lifetime Mortgage products that meet the standards of the Equity Release Council, who oversee the industry and its members and ensure that their strict standards and principles are upheld. We will spend time understanding your financial circumstances in detail so that we can recommend the most appropriate product for you if we feel it is suitable. The first consultation is totally free of charge and without obligation. If you do have any questions about equity release, the service we offer or if you would like to book a no-obligation appointment, please call us on:

Films Coming to the Cinema during December 2019
Jumanji, The Next Level: Release Date: 8 November The Plot: In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game. Little Women: Release Date 26 December The Plot: Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional
life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothee Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Volunteers sought to befriend patients over festive period The Friends of St. Cross and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust are launching a joint appeal for volunteers to visit and befriend patients in the Hospital of St. Cross over the festive season. Patients at the hospital, which is managed by UHCW, often enjoy having a conversation with someone other than a health service professional. Volunteers will be provided with guidance on ways to open up conversations which can be rewarding for both the patients and befrienders. Judith Lewis, Modern Matron at the Hospital of St Cross, said: “Unfortunately we will have patients at St. Cross who will not be well enough to be discharged home before Christmas. They may also not have friends or relatives nearby who can visit them. This is a great initiative which was first launched in 2017 by the Friends of St. Cross and we are delighted it is being repeated this year.” Kristine Davies, Head of Voluntary Services for UHCW NHS Trust, said: “Patients enjoy playing games such as dominoes or scrabble, or even using the art cart which is available. “Our activity co-ordinators work with ward staff and volunteers from the Friends of St. Cross and the Good Times Project to keep patients occupied while they’re in hospital. We have seen the benefits these initiatives bring to patients all year round. “Christmas can be an especially lonely time, so we are really pleased to team up with the Friends of St. Cross again to reach out into the community for more volunteers over the festive season.” Special arrangements are in place so people won’t have to be a registered volunteer with the Friends of St. Cross or the Trust. Befrienders will need to state which days they are available during normal visiting hours of 2pm to 4pm or between 6.30pm and 8pm from December 21 to January 1 inclusive.
Willy Goldschmidt, Chairman of the Friends of St Cross, added: “Last year we had a great response, with 65 people volunteering and many coming to visit patients on two or more occasions. This year we would like to do even better! “We look forward to welcoming people from across the community who would like to take up this opportunity to make a difference for patients in our lovely hospital.” Anyone interested in befriending should email claire@fsx.org.uk Photo: A patient from Coventry and a Friends Befriending Volunteer met in Mulberry Ward at the Hospital of St Cross.
