Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the December Edition.... Well, it’s almost upon us, there’s no hiding now. Are you organised? Have you ordered the turkey? Are you even having a turkey? It’s all very traditional in our house, I love turkey and wouldn’t ever change it - it just wouldn’t be the same without it. I also love it cold on boxing day with chips & pickles yum! I’m fairly organised this year and have been doing my present shopping (in person local mainly, I might add and not online) for a good few weeks now and at the time of writing this I just need to wrap. I hope you are managing to spend time with loved ones this year as the restrictions are slightly easier than last year. Do you like this years Front Cover design? I hope you like it as much as we do, although it was tough choosing a competition winner from all our wonderful entries. Robins symbolise so much that we felt it was quite fitting for this year as so many people have had a difficult time. As you flick through the magazine you will see a number of other entries too, they are just wonderful.
Lots of people are still travelling, unnecessarily to Coventry Hospital when they can be treated here at St Cross and with far less waiting times too! HOW TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE AT CHRISTMAS Whether you celebrate Christmas or simply enjoy taking time out during the festive bank holiday, it can often get busy and chaotic with all the preparations and activities going on which can result in a lot of food being thrown in the bin. Let’s give our food and our planet a little more thought. Planning Find out when your favourite grocery shops are open over the festive season. Most are only shut for a couple of days, so there’s no need to fill your fridge and cupboards til they’re fit to burst. Work out who’s going to be eating at your house each day and plan meals. Ask your family and guests what seasonal treats they would like rather than buying one of everything, just in case. Shopping Make shopping lists and try to stick to them, so you are not tempted by all the delicacies with a short shelf life. Longer life treats include: hard cheeses, nuts, sweets, fruitcake. Choose items with the longest shelf life and check over loose fruit and veg to avoid the bruised and damaged items.
Storing Make good use of your freezer and fridge and set aside an area of the fridge for ‘eat me first’ items. Tupperware, silicone seals, wax wrap, foil and film can all be used to store opened items and leftovers to keep them fresh in the fridge. Don’t forget to label and date things that you freeze. Held on Sunday mornings at the Webb Ellis Road ground, based just off Bilton Road, our minis players are kept occupied with a morning of fun and games, learning the key skills of rugby, based around the sport’s five core values – Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportmanship. During training sessions, your child will be taught the skills of passing, moving with the ball, spatial awareness, team support and tackling (at this age group they use tags rather than full-contact tackling), to prepare for friendly fixtures against other teams. Matches against other teams will commence in the new year for our Under 7s and Under 8s age groups where the focus is on enjoyment and participation – we guarantee that all players, regardless of ability, will play at least half a game, every game. Parents and Guardians can warm themselves with a hot drink from our kiosk while supporting their loved ones, safe in the knowledge that our coaches are RFU qualified and DBS checked. 450g sweet potato, diced 2 tbsp olive oil ¼ ciabatta loaf, torn into bite sized pieces 50g walnut halves 150g kale 200g cooked roast turkey, torn into pieces 50g pomegranate seeds 3-4 tbsp reduced fat caesar dressing A great way to use leftover turkey. A delicious combination of lean meat, heart healthy nuts and seasonal vegetables... who says salads are just for summer! Try using leftover roast parsnips instead of sweet potato, great for using up leftovers from the Christmas dinner.
Method Preheat the oven to 200oC, gas mark 6. Place the sweet potatoes on a baking tray and toss in 1 tbsp oil then roast for 20 minutes or until tender. Remove to a bowl to cool. Add the ciabatta to the same tray and toss in the remaining oil, cook for 5 minutes then scatter the walnuts to one side of the tray and roast for a further 5-8 minutes until golden. Meanwhile, cook the kale in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, drain and run under cold water, squeeze out excess liquid. Toss kale with the sweet potato, turkey and pomegranate seeds and place on a serving platter. Top with the ciabatta croutons and walnuts, drizzle over the dressing and serve. for the maple mustard dipping sauce
1 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon wholegrain mustard salt & pepper to taste You could of course, just use a ready made sauce for quickness
Method Pre-heat the oven to 200ºc and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the cocktail sausages in the pastry and place in a wreath shape on the baking sheet. (Place the bowl you plan on serving the dipping sauce in, in the middle so you have a guide.) Egg wash all the pigs in a blanket then place in the oven and allow to bake for 20 minutes until golden brown and until the pastry is cooked through. In the meantime, mix together all the dipping sauce ingredients and transfer to your serving bowl of choice. Remove the pigs in a blanket wreath from the oven and place the bowl of sauce in the middle.

DECEMBER GARDENING TASKS It may be cold outside and gardening maybe the last thing on your mind, but wrap up warm and get ot there for some fresh air. Little tasks done now will benefit the garden in the long run. Keeping on top of maintenance, protecting plants will see a beautiful garden emerging in the spring.
Protect Shrubs from Frost As the days grow colder and the frosts arrive it time to protect your shrubs. Move plants in pots to a sheltered spot if conditions turn very cold, as their roots are more exposed to the elements. Pile straw or bracken around the base of tender shrubs and climbers to protect them from falling temperatures. Terracotta pots can be protected from cracking in freezing weather by bringing them indoors or wrapping in bubble polythene
Birds in the Garden At this time of year, put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you can: in the morning and in the early afternoon. Birds require high-energy (high-fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. Use only good-quality food and scraps. Soft fruits, porridge oats (uncooked), grated cheese, cooked pasta and rice, soaked currants, raisins and sultanas, biscuit crumbs, and pastry crumbs are all great foods to feed birds with during the winter. Always adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods to accumulate around the feeders. Once you establish a feeding routine, try not to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly.
Garden Maintenance Clearing borders of dead or dying plants help create tidy displays, showing off those still in bloom. The spent debris makes a great soil improver for next year, so get it rotting down. Prune harshly to improve the shape of your trees and shrubs, look out for flaws such as split or broken branches, and make sure you cut them back so they are healthier next year. Leaves and manure are great for creating an alternative to compost; leaf mould can act as soil coverage during those harsh winter months and manure can be rotted down and used to rejuvenate your soil with nutrients. If you’re looking for something a little more natural, green manures like clover or rye are great for improving soil nature’s way. Mulch requires very little work and is great for applying to the roots of established or flowering plants. Let earthworms do all the hard work; they will eventually drag and blend the mulch into the topsoil. Be aware of pests and diseases, one of the most prevalent diseases this time of year is root rot. Stop root rot by placing pots in the shadow of a wall or fence and lift them off the ground on pot feet or large stones to let the moisture drain out.
