RUGBY SCHOOL GROUP

Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the August Edition.... Thank you to those who got in touch over the past few weeks with your what’s on listings and charity events for us to promote, its great to see so many things being arranged and I hope everyone supports them by either going along or just sharing and telling others. You can see these events on page 44. Remember, these are free to list so do get in touch with Catherine using the details below if you would like anything promoting.

Whether you are choosing to holiday here in the UK, abroad, or like us, staying at home this summer, stay safe, enjoy friends & family time and have a wonderful, hopefully sunny, August. Anne xxx

Anne

As I get more mobile and out for short walks I’ve noticed how many homes are having renovation works done to their houses and gardens. Its great that people are having the time to improve their homes and get their ‘to-do’ lists completed! With a wealth of tradespeople in the magazine to call upon you are sure to be in good hands whoever you ring, so don’t keep putting it off, give them a call and start the ball rolling on those jobs you keep thinking ‘I really must sort that out’. So schools out for summer. My youngest just finished at Bilton Junior School and is very excited to be starting high school in September. End of an era for us as all 3 children went to the same Junior school so I was sad to say goodbye, we will miss the school and its wonderful family of teachers & leaders. 3 in High School - yikes!

Please remember that the magazine is fully recyclable in your green bin but its also great to hand it friends & family if they don’t receive it!

Buying a new house? OUR NEW BUILD INSPECTORS WILL PRODUCE A PROFESSIONAL SNAGGING LIST FOR YOUR NEW HOME. On average we find 150 snags in the average 4 bed house. Our inspectors are highly qualified and experienced and have inspected thousands of new homes nationwide. We have combined their professional knowledge to produce an effective snagging methodology which is under constant development. This is the first time that the knowledge of chartered surveyors, senior site managers, building surveyors, architects and developers has been combined to produce a new homes snagging methodology and we are extremely pleased with the results.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY: ★★★★★

“Professional company that delivered an excellent service. Their expert surveyor identified defects and inconsistencies in finish that I would never had noticed. Quick turnaround of the snagging report. After spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on a property, spending hundreds of pounds on a snagging survey is 100% value for money as it gave me such peace of mind!” (Dan Wagner).

★★★★★

“Very helpful throughout the process even though we had to change the visit date on several occasions due to the new build delays.Would certainly recommend for anyone buying a new house!” (Jeremy Haselton).

Bought a New Build Home or thinking of buying one? This is a ‘must read’.. Snagging. If you have not bought a new build home, or are looking at buying a new build home, then you may not have even heard the word before. New Build Inspections pretty much coined the term in the early 2000’s. New Build Inspections has been inspecting new homes since 2003 performing over 16,000 inspections throughout the country. New Build Inspections are a local firm, based in Coventry, with a team of 11 inspectors and a support staff of 3. The purpose of a Snagging Inspection is to help protect a new build home buyer by identifying the defects, incomplete work or even those that do not meet with the standards laid down by the Building Regulations or the warranty company and providing a report so that the “snags” can be addressed - even the best built houses will show some snagging issues. Your inspection should ideally take place prior to handover, however, you generally have up to 2 years after your completion date to report any snags and defects. These can range from minor cosmetic snags through to substantial deviations from building regulations. Not only does this include interior problems such as missing insulation, cracked or creaking floors but also exterior problems ranging from damaged brickwork and walls which are not straight to waterlogged gardens. Some of these snags you may well be able to spot yourself whilst others will not be as obvious to an untrained eye. Mark Hurley, a spokesman for New Build Inspections, notes we have a lot of client recommendations; which is great and a lot of customers contact us via our website. Many people do not know that a Snagging Inspection service exists. Buying a new home is the largest investment that most people will make in their lives and a snagging report can both reassure them on the quality of their investment or help them identify and get any defects addressed. Although a snagging inspection is best undertaken prior to handover many people seek out our services after moving in and have noticed that things don’t seem quite right. A Snagging report helps to identify both these and others that the homeowner may not have identified and produce a list for the builder to work from. An independent inspection offers a layer of separation between the client and the builder and therefore helps to maintain a good relationship between the two. A Snagging Report is produced in a manner, using technical descriptions, that the builder is familiar with. Our reports separate the different issues by trade in order that the builder can send in the right team to fix your defects. New Build Inspections has numerous excellent reviews on Trustpilot, with an overall rating of 4.8/5. A sample are shown here:

New Build Inspections has contributed to many media articles over the past two decades. These have included newspaper and magazine articles on new homes to Dominic Littlewood’s BBC TV investigative series Watchdog. Contact:

Here’s everything you need to keep your

pets cool in hot weather

With summer officially here, it’s the perfect time to cool off with a swim in your local pool Cooling mat or paddling pool in your garden. It’s less fun, however, for pets, who can find coping in the heat difficult as many domestic animals have fur coats that offer little respite. As RSPCA animal welfare expert Dr Samantha Gaines explains, some pets, like dogs, don’t sweat so once their body temperature begins to rise it can be difficult for them to cool down. As a result, it’s important to keep a close eye on your pet’s behaviour in hot temperatures as they could be displaying signs of heatstroke. “If your pet is excessively panting or drooling, seems lethargic, is vomiting or collapses then these can all be signs of heatstroke. If you see any of these symptoms we would urge you to speak to your vet as soon as possible,” she says. With some animals that require daily walking, such as dogs and horses, take them out early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler. “Keep in mind that pavements can get very hot and can burn dogs’ paws – if it’s too hot to touch with your hand then it’s too hot for them to walk on.” Along with ensuring your pet has access to shady areas and plenty of water to drink, there are DIY measures you can employ to cool them down, such as using a damp towel for them to sit on, or wrapping an ice pack in a towel. Cooling mats, now widely available, are naturally cooling and don’t need to be frozen or refrigerated to use. You can keep it in the garden or indoors in some shade so they’re as comfortable as possible, and it won’t leave any damp stains on any decking or carpet. The mats are filled with a non-toxic gel that is five to 10 degrees cooler than room temperature. Dr Gaines recommends filling a pet paddling pool with cool water to play in. It will keep pets active and cool simultaneously. Pet specific paddling pools can be found in many stores. “You can also make frozen treats out of pet-friendly ingredients to keep your furry friend cool,” Pet specific paddling pool says Dr Gaines, who also suggests adding ice cubes to keep your pet’s water bowl. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41

There is no doubt the world and mankind face many problems. Many of these are caused by man himself. Pollution, global warming, starvation, war and terrorism are all difficulties that could be solved by cooperation between nations but they can never seem to agree. Have you ever wondered why? Add to that natural disasters, earthquakes, storms, flooding, wild fires and disease causing so much pain suffering and death. Why does a loving God allow this? We are convinced that God has a wonderful purpose with this earth and mankind and that all the problems we face will soon be solved. When you think about it, if there is a God, surely it makes sense to see what His view of the world is. Why He allows wars and why there is so much evil and disbelief around us. We invite you to visit our website to see God’s answer in His Word of Truth - the Bible. We have a large selection of helpful articles. Surely there will several to interest you.

Celebrating 10 Years Respite Provision, Here’s To 10 more!

The official ribbon was cut to open New Directions’ respite service ‘Milner House’ on the 24th of June 2011 by the then Mayor of Rugby, Gwen Hotten. This vibrant respite service is now celebrating its 10th year of supporting people with learning disabilities and autism and their families by promoting independence and empowerment. The charity will celebrate the anniversary later when restrictions have been eased or lifted. Milner House is a place where people learn new skills to maintain their independence, develop friendships, enjoy community activities and take a break from family or home life. The respite service needed to become dormant for a very short period of time during the first ‘Coronavirus lockdown’, reopening to high priority respite stays as soon as the national guidance allowed in July 2020. This was a huge team effort and meant that families and individuals who were desperate for a respite break could once again be supported. Miner House is now giving even more people that much-needed break after months of intense family relationships, missing friends and coping with restrictions. Stays can provide a short break from and for a carer, a short holiday or a new experience with support. With the independent living skills gained during stays at this vital service, many people have been able to move into their own supported living homes, including Leanne (pictured below). Even the pandemic has not stopped New Directions from providing their respite service and the Charity even opened 15 new supported living apartments within the centre of Rugby. New Directions has now supported 15 individuals to take up their own tenancies during the last year, most of whom are experiencing their first taste of living independently with support.

If you need respite support for yourself or a loved one, or know someone who New Directions can help please contact cpayne@newdirectionsrugby.org.uk or call 01788 878914

SEASONAL RECIPES

Ingredients 1 kg pears, peeled, cored and chopped 1 kg blackberries juice of 1 lemon 2 kg granulated or preserving sugar

Pea

Why not get your friends and family to help you collect enough blackberries to make this crowd pleaser at home. After a morning spent scouring the hedgerows, turn your foraged finds into a delicious sweet treat.

Aubergine, Beetroot, Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Broad Beans, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cherries, Chicory, Chillies, Courgettes, Cucumber, Damsons, Fennel, French Beans, Garlic, Greengages, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Loganberries, Mangetout, Marrow, Mushrooms, Parsnips, Peas, Peppers, Potatoes, Plums, Pumpkin, Radishes, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Rhubarb, Rocket, Runner Beans, Samphire, Sorrel, Spring Greens, Spring Onions, Strawberries, Summer Squash, Sweetcorn, Sweetheart Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Watercress, White Cabbage.

Place 2 or 3 saucers in the freezer to test for a set later on. Put the pears in a large pan with 350ml water. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10-15 minutes. Add the blackberries and lemon juice, then cook for a further 5 minutes until soft. Add the sugar and heat gently until all the sugar crystals have melted. Bring to the boil and cook steadily for 10-15 minutes until the setting point is reached – stir from time to time.

Ingredients 400g ripe blackberries 2-3 tbsp elderflower cordial 120g caster sugar a few fresh mint sprigs 300ml double cream 250ml full-fat greek yogurt

When it’s this easy, you’d be a fool not to try it. Blackberry, mint and elderflower fool.

After 10 minutes, put a teaspoon of the jam on a cold saucer from the freezer (take the pan off the heat). Leave for 1-2 minutes, then push the jam with your finger – it should wrinkle. If not, keep boiling and testing for a set every 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and leave to stand for 15 minutes. Skim off any scum and ladle the blackberry and pear jam into hot sterilised jars. Cover the surface with discs of waxed paper (the waxy side should be jam side down). Seal and label the jars when completely cold.

Put the blackberries in a saucepan with the elderflower cordial, caster sugar and fresh mint sprigs. Set the pan over a medium heat and gently bubble the mixture for 10-15 minutes until the berries soften and release their juices, then reduce to a thick coulis. Remove from the heat and let it cool a little, then taste, adding more sugar or a dash more cordial if needed. Remove the mint sprigs (discard). Allow the mixture to cool completely (it will become more like jam in consistency). Pour the double cream into a large bowl then, using an electric mixer, whisk to soft-medium peaks. Stir in the Greek yogurt, then fold in the cooled blackberry coulis, creating a swirled effect. Spoon the fool into 6 serving dishes and serve straightaway, or cover and chill for up to 6 hours.

Have you noticed the newly decorated Webb Cupand follow us on Twitter Like us onEllis Facebook on the Gyratory and wondered what it was all about?... The Rugby Dementia Friendly Communities Group marked the start of Dementia Action Week by yarn bombing the iconic Webb Ellis Cup outside of the Rugby School. The decorative piece was created by members of the local community alongside the Rugby Dementia Friendly Communities Group and was unveiled by Mayor of Rugby, Councillor Bill Lewis. The cup has been decorated with crocheted and knitted flower forget-me-nots, signifying support for the Alzheimer’s Society and to reignite the campaign to ‘Make Rugby a Dementia Friendly Community,’ which launched in 2018 and was set up to create a community where people living with dementia are understood, respected and supported. The work for this progressed steadily until the pandemic when it ground to a halt but the members felt that Dementia Action Week 2021 was a good time to kick start it again and raise awareness by yarn bombing the Webb Ellis Cup. Mayor Bill Lewis said: “As Mayor and First Citizen of Rugby, on behalf of the residents of Rugby, I thank everyone who has helped to decorate the Webb Ellis Cup for today’s unveiling. I am sure this will help increase the public’s awareness of dementia and where to find help when it is needed” The unveiling was rounded off with cupcakes provided by Anya Court Care Home. Customer Relationship Manager of the home and a member of the Rugby Dementia Friendly Communities Group, Karen Handley said: “It is amazing given the restrictions we have had, that the local community has come together in time for us to re-launch our Rugby Dementia Friendly Communities campaign at the start of Dementia Action Week. “We want to make people aware of what we are doing to work towards Rugby being a town where people with dementia feel included, are understood and supported. “We are proud at Anya Court to play our part in this and I, as a Dementia Friends Champion, encourage people to become a Dementia Friend as their first step.” Members of the Rugby Dementia Support Group currently include, Anya Court Care Home, Brethertons Solicitors, Rugby Borough Council, The Rugby Register and Vasstech Garage and they welcome more members in their goal to Make Rugby a Dementia Friendly Community.

AUGUST GARDENING TASKS This month is all about maintaining your blooms, deadheading, clearing weeds, collecting seedings and watering hopefully due to the warmer.

Weeds

If you’ve been putting off weeding chores in the garden, August is the time to finally get busy. That’s because, as the growing season winds down, both annual and perennial weeds start to produce thousands of seeds that will germinate in your garden next spring. If left unchecked, these pesky invaders become extremely difficult to eliminate. The best time to weed is right after a rain when the soil is still moist. If rainfall is scarce, irrigate your garden thoroughly the night before you start your attack. You can pull weeds by hand or use a hoe. Just be sure to remove the roots. Weeds such as crabgrass or purslane quickly regenerate from any root left in the soil. As soon as you have the weeds removed, cover the area with a thick mulch of compost, straw, leaves, or shredded bark.

Seeds to Sow in August Winter-flowering pansies can be sown now for colour in the cooler months. Sow viola ‘Pot Pourri Mixed’ seeds to over-winter and provide fresh colour in the spring. Sow hardy annual seeds like poppies, Californian poppies, cornflower ‘Dwarf Blue Midget’, calendula and larkspur now to provide earlier flowers next year.

Collecting Poppy Seeds for Next Year Identifying when to harvest the seeds is the hard part but an easy way is to allow the pods to dry on the plant. When the flowers have gone bag the pods individually with cheese cloth or old nylon stockings. Harvesting poppy seeds in this manner ensures that the seed has reached maturity. To save seed for the next season, dry them for a couple of weeks in an open container. Then pour the seed into a glass container with a tight fitting lid. Culinary seeds will retain flavor for up to a year if the container is stored in a cool, dry, dark location. Seed for growing should be planted the following year for best results.
