Editors Letter... Hi everyone and welcome the August Edition.... Welcome to August! I don’t know about you, but for me life is still somewhat surreal. I have had many people say to me recently ‘oh, we are all in the same boat’ but I disagree. I think we are all in the same storm but all in our own individual boats trying to paddle our way through the storm. As lockdown eases, but numbers here in Rugby are on a slight increase, I am still behaving as I have for the past 16 weeks almost. I have had a hair cut though - phew, that was much needed! I am still helping in the community with shopping and prescription collections as part of Bilton Corona Virus Support Group, and am still happy to do so for as long as the vulnerable need me. It’s been wonderful meeting some lovely new people and helping them through such a difficult time. My 3 children are now happily enjoying their 6 week summer holiday and glad not to be schooling at home anymore. Sadly I’m back at work now so not able to sped alot of time with them, - that said, I’m so grateful to still have my business and to be back up and running. Speaking of my magazine, I wanted to say a bit thank you to the many people who have been very positive about receiving the July
edition, about me being back in business and for all the business Birthday wishes too. Its all very very much appreciated.
Anne
We are off to visit my mother-in-law now in Hereford who we haven’t seen since early March, it will be the first time we have been anywhere as a family for 5 months. Let’s hope the travel sickness of the 3 females amongst us hasn’t got any worse!
Stay safe and my very best wishes to you all, Keep smiling, even behind your masks!
Anne xx .

Misty Double Glazing?
Don’t replace the Frames ...just the Panes!
Hi, my name is Dave Millidge, let me introduce my company where I repair windows and replace misted up double glazed units.
The area that I cover is Coventry and Warwickshire. You may have seen me around in your street or even have family and friends who I have worked for in the past ten years, with over 6,000 satisfied customers during that period. I started Misty to Clear to give customers the best value repairs in the current climate. The Misty to Clear website allows total transparency of the customer experience. You can log into the website and view work that I have carried out. You can also leave feedback on social media. Therefore, I give a 25 year guarantee on all new double glazed units fitted by Misty to Clear.
Misted/Failed Double Glazed Units Replaced Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Want the latest energy saving glass? Family run business with 25 year guarantee on new double glazed units
This is a genuine guarantee which does not come as an extra to my price. I started Misty to Clear mindful that the cost of repairs is probably key to most people’s budget when using tradesmen to do work on their behalf in their homes. I offer a lower cost service to both old and new customers as I operate directly for the customer with no additional hidden charges or insurance costs to you the customer. So, my company name is Misty to Clear where I can offer steamed up window glass replacement and fix broken handles, hinges, seals, window locks and door locks. I also change glass in Velux windows too. Satisfaction guaranteed to be a high standard that carries a 25 year guarantee.
Clearly a great service!

The community response to the PPE crisis has reduced the impact of the pandemic! Several groups in and around Rugby have worked together to produce a wide range of Personal Protective Equipment for the NHS, Carers and the community. Dr Norman Byrd, Clinical Director Rugby Health, expressed his thanks by saying “So far Rugby has suffered a lower than average incidence of cases and deaths as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. I believe that the Rugby PPE Response initiative contributed to this by delivering face visors to Care Homes and NHS staff who were not in what was perceived to be the front line when the crisis emerged. We must also thank the numerous seamstresses co-ordinated by the Warwickshire Scrubbers, Benn Partnership Centre and the Friends of St Cross who have made scrubs, scrub bags and gowns for medical staff and cloth face masks for the vulnerable members of the community." Willy Goldschmidt, Chairman of the Friends of St Cross and one of the founding members of the Rugby PPE Response initiative said “It has been tremendous to see how the community came together to support the NHS and the Care Sector in the last four months. With support from Friends volunteers, many individuals using domestic 3D printers and partner organisations including Rugby School and Coventry University we have delivered over 13,000 face visors to over 150 organisations.” “Together with the Warwickshire Scrubbers, we have also delivered 12,000 other items of PPE such as scrubs, scrub bags and ear protectors for front line staff across the NHS and Care Sector. We are now turning our focus to making cloth face masks for vulnerable members of the community with the aim of distributing 10,000 of these by the end of July! ” “It was great to meet and thank Lara Hampton, Assistant Head, Rugby School, David Holton Trustee of the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund, Gita Natarajan of the Benn Partnership Centre and some of the seamstresses at the Benn Partnership Centre. There are doubtless many others who we have not met but have done invaluable work in producing PPE and supporting those who are vulnerable or are shielding” Lara Hampton said “Our innovative Design Department at Rugby School created a design for an easily manufactured face visor. Rugby School staff were extremely keen to give their time to manufacture and distribute these to those who needed them including Myton Hospice, The Hospital of St Cross, local care homes, GP surgeries and primary schools, in addition to donating all our PPE equipment normally used around the School. We were pleased to collaborate with Willy and the Rugby PPE Response team and to contribute to the magnificent local effort to support our front-line workers” Gita Natarajan, Beyond Brexit Project Manager for the Benn Partnership Centre said “The Partnership has a network of over 100 stitchers from diverse ethnicities, which we mobilised when the Government advised the public to wear cloth face masks when outdoors! Till date, cloth face masks have been distributed to the vulnerable members of the community in multiple occupancy homes and social housing tenancies as well as through Rugby Food Bank, Hope 4, Rugby Street Pastors, members of Alzheimer’s Society, U3A, Rugby Parkinson’s Society, and many others. We recognised that both the Friends of St Cross and ourselves would need to raise money to buy raw materials and so we are most grateful for the support we have received from the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund which has enabled us to continue with our initiatives which will undoubtedly save many from catching this awful virus. We would welcome further donations which can be made on-line at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/ RugbyPPEResponse or directly to The Benn Partnership Centre or The Friends of St Cross” David Holton said “On behalf of the trustees of the Rugby Group Benevolent Fund we are delighted to see a contribution of the Greater Rugby Community in this vital project.” Sandy Weaver and Michele Goode, Co-Ordinators for Rugby and Warwickshire Scrubbers, said “Since the Rugby and Coventry Branch of Warwickshire Scrubbers was set up on 4th April, we have in excess of 180 sewing ladies and gents and have delivered over 7,000 items such as Scrub suits, Scrub Caps, Laundry Bags, Headbands and Ear Savers and Face Coverings to George Elliot Hospital, University Hospital Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross, Northampton General, Medical Centres in Rugby and Coventry, NHS Nursing Homes & Care Workers, NHS Dental Practices as well as special orders for individuals from Kettering Hospital and Warwick Hospital.” “It has been a humbling experience being part of a wonderful community project which was born out of urgent local need to react to the pandemic hitting the UK. It has been amazing to see how the local community has contributed to this project both in terms of home sewing and financial donations towards the costs of fabric.” “There has also been great feedback from the 'Scrubbers' of a sense of purpose during the lockdown period. So much so that the group has decided to continue under the new branding of "Warwickshire Sewing Bees" to continue to work on other Community Projects.” More information about the Rugby PPE Response initiative can be found on www.rugby-ppe-response.org.uk and Facebook @RugbyPPEResponse. Photo: Seamstresses met Gita Natarajan, Willy Goldschmidt, David Holton and Lara Hampton at the Benn Partnership Centre also in attendance was Ramesh Srivastava, Trustee of the Friends of St Cross.

5 courgettes, topped and tailed
1 medium free-range egg, beaten Sunflower oil for frying If you have a food processor with a julienning attachment, put the courgettes through at the thickest setting. If not, either use a spiraliser and roughly chop into 10cm lengths, or grate the courgettes coarsely on a box grater (grate lengthways to get longer pieces). Line a large roasting tin with 3 layers of kitchen paper, scatter over the courgettes, sprinkle with sea salt, then top with more kitchen paper and leave to drain for 20 minutes. Pat the drained courgettes dry with more kitchen roll, then tip into a large mixing bowl with the spring onions, spices, flour and egg. Season well with salt and pepper and stir to combine. Heat about 3cm oil in a large sauté pan or deep frying pan on a high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, drop in a little of the mix – it should sizzle gently. If it doesn’t, heat the oil for longer. When ready, scoop up dessert spoonfuls of the mix and gently slide into the oil using another spoon to help. Repeat until you have 5-6 frying at once. Cook for 2-3 minutes until golden on the underside, then flip over with a slotted spoon or palette knife. Once the fritters are uniformly golden, remove and drain on kitchen paper. If you’re serving them all together, keep batches warm in a low oven while you fry the rest. Serve the fritters warm with your favourite mint and yogurt dip.

Coming to Hospital To help keep you safe we have introduced measures across all our sites to help with social distancing and maintain good hand hygiene and thought we would let you know. We all play a key role in reducing the spread of coronavirus and protecting each other, so to help keep you safe in hospital we have made few changes and thought we would let you know about them so you don't have any surprises. Everyone now needs to wear a face covering when visiting our hospitals as a visitor or outpatient. If you haven't visited us for a while things may look a little different when you do, but don't worry it has all been done with you in mind and we are here to help.
You will see: Social Distancing signs and floor markings right across the sites Increased hand sanitiser areas Fewer seats in waiting areas Perspex screens on receptions desks More staff and patients wearing personal protective equipment At UHCW NHS Trust our priority is your care and we have done this to help keep you as safe as possible when you need us the most Further information can be found online at www.uhcw.nhs.uk/caring-for-you/coronavirus/visiting We are asking that you plan in advance and bring a face covering with you whenever possible, but if you do not have one available, when you come to hospital, please see a member of staff on arrival and we will provide you with one. Follow the guide below for the correct way to wear a face mask

Coming out of Lockdown Being in lockdown gave us the opportunity to reflect and take a step back but I am beginning to feel it is really time now to move forward again; slowly and carefully. There is a sort of comfort and sense of safety, being forced to stay mainly in your own home with only one outing a day for exercise. It became the new norm. Yes, is was very lonely at times especially for those who live alone but I feel we have got used to and even a bit stuck in our comfort zone. As lockdown restrictions are being reduced what can we do to make the transition easier while feeling safe? For me, being able to see my family again was so good. To be hugged by my Grandsons was simply marvellous and yes it did feel safe because we have all mostly obeyed the rules but of course I realise not everyone is lucky enough to have family. I suggest then you find something you love to do outside the home and treat yourself. I am shopping locally and would urge you to do the same. Our local shops will not survive if we do not support them. Sad to say, I cannot improve the economy single-handed so please get out there and treat yourselves to something nice – you deserve it! On-line shopping is just not the same as having a smiling face to serve you and really choosing what you want. It is not just our mental health that will have suffered during these horrible times. Part of this moving forward should be taking better care of our health so that if the virus does come back strongly in the autumn, as they are now suggesting, our bodies are in a stronger state to resist it and if we are unfortunate enough to catch the virus then we can survive it. As you are all aware by now, my view is that the food we eat is the fuel we need to build a strong healthy body that is resistant to disease. At any time, it is important to eat food that not only provides us with the nutrition we need but also helps build a strong immune system. Unfortunately, our food does not provide us with the same level of nutrition that it used to mainly because of intensive farming methods, over-use of pesticides and long storage of food by some supermarkets. The weather is not that warm now so why not make some good hearty comfort meals, with lots of fresh vegetables, the ingredients will also boost your immune system. Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables is essential so go ahead and make those warming meals with as many different types of vegetables as you can get; stews and hotpots are so good for us. Home-made, soup is quick and easy to make and is far better for us than the commercial varieties. Make sure you
include onions and garlic which also protect our bodies from germs. Carrot juice gives a wonderful boost to your immune system; indeed, juicing any cocktail of fresh fruit and vegetables will bring many benefits to your health. I hope the following five tips will help you stay healthy and safe:
1. Eat a varied diet for the reasons already stated and eat plenty of fresh frui t and vegetables. Avoid processed foo ds which contain too much fat, sugar, and salt. 2. Get plenty of sleep because during the winter we need more rest; lack of sleep can reduce the effectiveness of you r immune system by 50%. 3. Drink plenty of liquid; try her bal teas and filtered water rather than caffeina ted drinks which deplete the body of man y nutrients including zinc and iron. 4. Reduce stress – Stress is bad for us. Discover ways to relax and enjo y life. Exercise is a great stress reliever and has the major benefit of increasing you r resistance to infections. 5. Take a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement daily, this will guard against deficiencies and research sugges ts that people who take a multi vitamin s suffer fewer infections. Also, I am taki ng high levels of Vitamin C, at the moment, and a zinc supplement in the evening . Echinacea is known to boost your immune but remember Echinacea should not be taken all year round.
Live with joy and health, Elizabeth Beetham www.powerforhealth.com healing@powerforhealth.com Tel: 07773 790736
Like us on Facebook and follow Trains at us on Twitter An update on the Miniature Rainsbrook Valley Railway....
Due to Covid-19 Rugby MES are still not able to run their Public Days with train rides. The society relies heavily on the ticket sales of these public days to fund the cost of maintaining the tracks, trains and railway itself. If you have been to any of their monthly open days then you will know what a great Sunday afternoon out this is and hopefully it won’t be too long before we can all enjoy this again. In the meantime an Emergency crowdfunding appeal has been created, with every penny donated helping to ensure the railway can continue to bring hours of enjoyment for all. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rmes

GARDENING JOBS FOR AUGUST August is that time of year where blooms are bursting with a riot of colour throughout your garden. There’s still lots to do like dead-heading roses, keep watering pots and hanging baskets. Hopefully we can enjoy the warmth of the sun and admire the results of hard work you’ve all being doing during lockdown

Midsummer is when most of us tackle our hedges as the new growth begins to make them look untidy. If you’re using a hedge trimmer, start at the bottom of each side and work upwards in smooth, continuous swathes. Cut the top last. You can save time by spreading a plastic sheet beside the hedge to catch the clippings. Brush or rake the clippings from the top of the hedge, as leaving them will make it look unsightly.

Raise mower blades in dry spells During dry weather, raise the blades on your lawn mower to allow the grass to grow a little bit longer. This will keep it greener and help retain moisture. Don’t panic if your grass does turn brown as it will soon green up again when the rain eventually returns. Next month will be a good time to give your lawn a bit of TLC to get it back into shape after the hard wear it experiences in summer.
It’s important to cut back lavender after its flowering period to promote new growth. Make sure you do so lightly to help maintain the plant’s well-rounded shape. You should be pruning around one third of the plant using a sharp, clean set of pruning shears. Put cuttings in moist, well-drained potting compost (one part grit to one part compost) and place in a cold frame.
