Dog Boarding
We are a 5 Star Rated Kennels and Cattery by Rugby Borough Council and licensed to board up to 114 Dogs at any one time.
Our Kennels are available in a variety of sizes and we always book your dog into the most suitable sized kennel.
Our standard sized Kennel is suitable for most breeds, we can also accommodate multiple dogs sharing from the same household.
Cattery Pens
We are licensed to board up to 60 cats at any one time.
All of our cat pens offer dual level accommodation. This provides your cat with options for where they wish to sleep. It is also very beneficial for elderly cats who would be unable to manage the climb which take the cats to the upper levels.
Our cat housing is insulated and heated to ensure they are warm and comfortable during the winter months. Each cat will be provided daily with fresh water and fresh litter. We also provide toys, scratching posts and blankets suitable for use on the soft beds provided.

A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN TOWN
Living in Rugby we are all aware of the world-famous independent school whose grounds wraps around the town. Often you may notice coach loads of visitors arriving for tours. So why have you never thought of going on one of these tours yourself?
Lots of us have been entertained at The Festival on the Close, The Open-Air Cinema, The Macready Theatre, or watched our children perform at the impressive Temple Speech Room. But how many of us have been intrigued and have wanted to step through those doors to see where the smartly dressed students disappear to, the girls gliding along in their smart floor length long skirts, the boys in their various coloured ‘house’ ties and lovely tweed blazers? Who would like to find out just what is behind those amazing wooden arched doors?
Rugby School is open to anyone for tours and that includes us locals! On the day we visited recently we were joined by a touring 75 strong Rugby Football Group from Portland, Maine, and accompanied by 3 guides, Annie, Julie & Angus who enthralled us not only in the history of the school, but also the game of Rugby. We have all heard about in 1823, local lad William Webb Ellis, with a fine disregard for the rules of football, took the ball in his arms and ran with it, originating the game of rugby football. But after a tour around the school, you will know there is much, much more to their story and so much more history within its walls.
Our tour started at the Temple Speech Room, into the Upper Bench Room, The New Quad, (the UK’s first ever school science lab) from there to School Chapel, past the Birching Tower, along to the Bicentenary Exhibition: ‘He ran with it’ and Museum before finishing at the School Shop. It’s not just the buildings that will leave you wide eyed but the storytelling, the history of the school, some of the people who have worked & studied there and of course the beauty of the whole place. As a working school, each tour differs according to availability, and on your tour, you may find you go into different places to us, but we know you will see and hear amazing things, whichever parts of this wonderful vast school you get to see. We won’t go into detail too much about the tour as it will spoil it - you need to find out for yourselves. But why is it that last month people travelled as far from the States, Italy and France to take a history tour when we have it on our doorstep.
We’re sure you will leave wondering why you’d never been sooner, and we are positive you will love it as much as we did. Oh, and when you do the tour be sure to ask to see the Death Cart in the museum! Prices for the tour are just £8.50 adults and £6.50 concessions but you can get a £2 discount per ticket when you quote The Rugby Register at the time of booking! (Discount valid until the end of 2023).
To book a tour go to: www.rugbyschoolenterprises.co.uk or call 01788 556169 (Term -Time).
This year celebrates 200 years since the birth of the game of Rugby Football when William Webb Ellis took the ball in his hands and ran with it and Rugby School have organised a packed calendar of celebration events for you to enjoy and get involved with. Each month The Rugby Register will be publishing upcoming events but if you want to see and book them go to www.rugbyschool.co.uk/200-anniversary/events (see page 3) and/or follow them on social media @RugbySchool1567
During this special celebratory year, the Schools archivist has put on display an amazing exhibition called ‘He ran with it’ showing many of the schools archives relating to the game. This can be viewed in person for the next few months with the exhibition open during tours (until Easter) and when events are happening at the Close. It can also viewed online at www.rugbyschoolarchives.co.uk, and from September to December it will be on display in Rugby Art Gallery. You may or may not be aware of the Rugby School Shop and you can be forgiven for assuming that this is purely for Students of the school. However, if you pop along as part of a tour, or just when you are next in town you will be surprised at all it has to offer. Yes, it has school items, but it is much, much more, from clothing & sportswear, footwear, games (like Monopoly Rugby!), a number of fascinating books and a whole plethora of great gift ideas, it really is worth calling in. The ladies in there, Anne & Julie will give you a very warm & friendly welcome. Tours can also be booked from here. The shop is located on Barby Road, opposite the entrance for Horton Crescent, through the black wrought iron gates and is open term time: Mon-Fri 8.30-2pm / Sat – 9-2pm.

April Gardening Tasks
It’s spring and things are really hotting up in the garden with sowing, planting, and weeding all well underway. Dont forget the work now starts on the lawns too. So get out in the fresh air there is lots to do.
How to Prune Hydrangea
Most hydrangeas are pruned in spring, their flower heads having been left on over winter to protect the buds beneath. Climbing hydrangeas are the exception to this rule – they are pruned in summer, after flowering.
Pruning prevents hydrangeas becoming woody and congested, and channels the plants’ energy into producing strong growth and large blooms. After pruning, mulch the plant with well rotted manure or compost.
Hydrangea macrophylla, Hydrangea aspera, Hydrangea serrata and Hydrangea quercifolia are lightly pruned by cutting back the old flower heads to a pair of buds below. Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea aborescens can be cut back harder.
If you’re not sure which type of hydrangea you have, it’s best just to deadhead it and observe how it grows. If you notice that it produces flowers on this year’s growth, you can prune it harder next year.
Sowing Seeds
This spectacular perennial, Monarda didyma ‘Cambridge Scarlet’. Keep the soil moist and cover the seeds to stop them drying out. Pot up the seedlings when large enough to handle, then plant out in full sun or partial shade. Brilliant red flowers will be a real show stopper when in bloom.
Several types of poppy can be grown from seed, including orange California poppies (Eschscholzia californica), field poppies (Papaver rhoeas) and larger opium poppies (Papaver somniferum). They can all be sown from March to May, for flowers in summer and autumn.
Plant Dahlia Tubers
Bringing dahlias in for the winter doesn’t just protect them against frost. It also allows them to dry out properly, and helps you bring them on a bit earlier. They’re now ready to be planted. Give tubers a sprinkling of water in early spring, and they’ll start to produce young shoots in April. Discard any tubers that look diseased or damaged. Dig a planting hole, making sure it isn’t too deep. The shoots are still delicate, and you don’t want to damage them. Gently pour coarse sand over the tubers; this prevents them from rotting and it’s also a great slug repellent. Backfill with soil and add a ring of sand to mark the planting spot. It’s also another useful means of combating those pesky slugs and snails. Write labels for each dahlia cultivar and place them correctly next to each plant; a foolproof way to remember what you’ve planted in a few months’ time.

Viva Magenta has been announced as the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2023. This fabulous fusion of warm red/pink and blue tones is unique as it is not found within the natural visual spectrum of light and is a physiological and psychological trick that our brains play when perceiving colours.
This years colour palette
Arsenic
This provokes a sense of intrigue into how humans first began to visualise and subsequently produce pigments to enhance the beauty in the world around us, whether it be for dying garments and textiles or for artists to utilise to create their masterpieces.
For thousands of years people have experimented with colour in their quest for the perfect tone or shade. Some of the techniques used historically have proven dangerous and sometimes deadly and are luckily no longer used in the modern world but, as we will see, were fundamental for centuries.
These deadly colours were used widely to bring to life the artwork of the renaissance, in the cosmetics for ancient civilisations as well as interior decoration and homeware throughout the ages.
Lead White
During the 3rd and 4th century BC this striking but fatal pigment was created by mixing metallic lead with vinegar. Widely by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans in their quest to look good, it could also be found in European artwork throughout the ages and for years was the primary shade of white painted on easels during the 19th century. Many artists were unknowingly exposed to lead by inhalation or absorption, leading to poisoning. The Industrial Revolution introduced new ways of creating colours synthetically and Titanium White was bought out to replace the old Lead White.
Vermillion
Lead is not the only deadly chemical found in ancient pigments. Mercury is present in the mineral Cinnabar and was used in the production of the scarlet red pigment Vermillion. Mercury in its inorganic form is the least dangerous but will still cause poisoning if inhaled or absorbed affecting the ability to speak/hear, muscle weakness and lack of co ordination. The use of Cinnabar dates back to early China where it was used to preserve bodies for funerals and also Roman times where it was used to decorate the stucco of the walls in homes.
Invented in the 18th century by a Swedish chemist conducting research into Arsenic, Scheeles Green was a brilliant bright green hue which has since been proven hard to replicate in its true glory. This perfect bright green is a combination of Arsenious Oxide, Sodium Carbonate and Copper Sulphate a particularly poisonous combination which causes serious damage to the liver, stomach and other internal organs. Throughout the 18th and 19th century, Scheeles Green was cheap and easy to make and was used in the manufacturing of wallpapers, fabrics, children’s toys as well as offering a more vibrant and realistic tone of green to foliage and scenes of nature. Fortunately, popularity declined and the colour was replaced with a slightly safer pigment but without the same effect as the original Scheeles Green. Farrow and Ball have created the famous and fabulously eye catching take on this colour, simply named “Arsenic”.
Tyrian Purple
Also known as Royal Purple or Phoenician Red, this stunning pigment was first found in the Tye region of Lebanon and was primarily used in dyes to make garments for imperial families of the time. Tyrian Purple is produced by crushing hundreds of thousands of predatory sea snails for their secretion which is needed to create this beautiful vibrant red/purple hue. Whilst not harmful to humans, this practice of killing thousands of snails was harmful to sea life and also extremely expensive to make.
Uranium Orange/Yellow
Uranium based hues have been used to tint and glaze ceramics for thousands of years and could still be found in some pottery of the 20th century. Orange tones were often difficult to produce but one particular uranium based orange pigment became hugely popular in the glazes of homeware ceramics and could still be found right up until the 1970s with dinner sets and tea cups potentially emitting radiation into the home.
The yellow tones became popular in the detailed decoration of military vehicles during World War 2, causing potentially deadly tumours or cancer to those who had the unfortunate task of painting them. All uranium oxide was then confiscated by the US army to be used the development of bombs and other nuclear weapons around the time of the Second World War.

Delicious Seasonal Recipes
Last Minute Easter Cake
If you need to prepare a last minute cake for surprise guests, this is for you. Miriam shares her impressive Easter cake recipe that doesn’t even need to cool before decorating.
Ingredients
Prep Time: 45 mins Cook Time: 40 mins Feed 4
6 large eggs
350g of caster sugar
350g of butter, plus extra for greasing
350g of plain flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 lemon
TOPPING
100g of dark chocolate
25g of butter
1 tbsp of honey, runny
icing sugar
mini chocolate eggs
Method
Preheat the oven to about 170°C/gas mark 3.5. Grease a patterned bundt tin (distinctive doughnut shape) really really well with butter, make sure you get it into all of the patterned bits.
Crack the eggs into a large bowl and add the caster sugar. Using an electric hand whisk or free standing mixer whisk the eggs and sugar together until they’re really pale, thick and fluffy
Melt the butter in a small pan. Turn the beaters back on and keep whisking as you pour the melted butter onto the eggs and sugar in a steady stream
Once the butter is in add the flour and baking powder then grate in the zest from the lemon and add a spritz of the juice. Fold these ingredients in with a metal spoon until completely mixed together
Pour the lot into your prepared tin and place in the middle of the oven for about 1 hour – 1 hour 15 minutes –check it after 30 minutes and see how it’s ticking along. When it’s ready it should be a pale golden brown and if you push a skewer into the sponge it should come out cleanly, if it’s still gooey pop it back in the oven for a bit longer
In a small pan (totally ok to use the one you melted the butter in) put the butter and honey and warm them over a low heat. Once the butter has melted add the chocolate and remove from the hob. Keep stirring until the chocolate has melted and you’ve got a lovely thick sauce. Squeeze the rest of the lemon juice into a small bowl and add enough icing sugar to make a thick, runny icing
When the cake is ready, let it cool for a moment or two in the tin then turn it out onto a board or plate. Once the cake is on the board start drizzling, first with the chocolate glaze, then the lemon icing, go totally freestyle, scribbly is good. Dust the surface with a bit more icing sugar and randomly dot a selection of chocolate eggs over the top.
