Editors Letter... Hi Everyone and welcome the April Edition... Oh sunshine how I’ve missed you! How beautiful has the weather been? Has anyone else stopped to wonder how miserable they must have been feeling without realising it? The sun came out and I’m all smiley and happy and then I think - ooh, how was I before?! This month we have a great magazine, full of wonderful local businesses, lots of events to get involved in and a wealth of articles & features. Did any of you go to Rugby Theatre when it opened its doors? I saw Six Queens and it was amazing. I’m so pleased they are now back open and the newly refurnished bar over the road is superb, as are all the changes to the toilet facilities etc. There are some more plays coming up soon, as well as film showings so be sure to go and check it out. After putting the De-cluttering article together (p.18) I made a start on our house. I’m slowly working my way through all the rooms and already it’s feeling less cluttered and cleaner. I’ve done a few trips to two different charity shops, as well as some household donations to Hope 4, all of which were very grateful - making the de-cluttering even more worthwhile. Delicious Seasonal Recipes Spiced Roast Lamb A lamb roast is always a treat and this one makes for a gorgeously tender, beautifully spiced dish, that puts an aromatic twist on the traditional pairing of lamb and mint.
Ingredients
4 tbsp. clear honey 300 ml white wine 4 large bay leaves 12 garlic cloves, unpeeled, halved Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1.75–1.9 kg whole shoulder of lamb 4 medium onions, each cut into 3 thick crossway slices 200 ml lamb stock 800 g Maris Piper potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 2cm thick slices FOR THE SALSA VERDE Small bunch fresh parsley, roughly chopped 2 tbsp. capers, drained, roughly chopped 4 canned anchovies, drained, roughly chopped 2 tbsp. olive oil
Method Add two tablespoons of the honey to a large plastic bag, add the wine, bay leaves, rosemary and garlic, a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper and shake the bag to mix. Make small incisions with a knife at intervals over the lamb, add it to the bag with the onions then seal the bag tightly and put it into a roasting tin. Chill for three hours or overnight in the fridge, turning the bag once or twice so that the honey mix flavours both side of the joint. Take the lamb out of the fridge one hour before cooking so that it can come back to room temperature. Lift the bag out of the roasting tin, add the potatoes to the tin then the onions from the marinade, pour the honey mix over and arrange the lamb on top. Pour the stock into the tin, cover with foil and twist over the edges of the tin. Roast in a pre-heated oven at 160°C/ 325° F/ gas mark 3 for two and a half hours.
Seasonal Food this Month For the best quality food eat the food in season. This month :- asparagus, broccoli, jersey royal new potatoes, lettuce & salad leaves, purple sprouting broccoli, radishes, rocket, samphire, spinach, spring onions, watercress, rhubarb, basil, chives, dill, sorrel lamb, wood pigeon, cockles, crab, langoustine, lobster, plaice, prawns, salmon, sea trout, shrimp, whitebait
Remove the foil from the pan, spoon the cooking juices over the lamb, onions and potatoes then drizzle the lamb with the remaining honey. Cook uncovered for 30 minutes until the lamb is a deep golden and the meat is almost falling off the bone. When ready to serve, mix all the salsa verde ingredients together and spoon into a serving bowl. Carve the lamb into thick slices and add to a serving plate or shallow bowl with the potatoes, onions and cooking juices and a spoonful of salsa verde.

Decluttering tips to get the whole house in shape. A step-by-step approach to tackling each room. Decluttering the kitchen, living room and bedroom can feel like mammoth tasks, but if you break it down, room by room, things can become much more manageable. To help you know where to start, we’ve put together a simple guide to each room in the house, offering clear decluttering advice and a check list you can tick off. Before you begin finding all your things neat new places to be stored, we recommend getting a charity bag, a bin bag and making some sensible clear out choices. Gardening Tasks
In April the weather remains unpredictable and we can have anything from a heatwave to ground frosts and sleet; be prepared. The best protection for tender veg and bedding plants if frost strikes is cloches or a horticultural fleece. Cover the tender plants until the frost or cold weather has passed.
Bedding Plants The rule of thumb is do not plant out bedding plants until risk of frost has passed. Depending on where you are in the country, this is likely to be towards the end of May. You can plant out earlier, but monitor the weather, and if frost is forecast, you will need to protect with a cloche or fleece. Most bedding plants are not hardy which means they will not withstand a frost which could severely set back the plant, or even kill it.
Plant Dahlia Tubers Bringing dahlias in for the winter doesn’t just protect them against frost. It also allows them to dry out properly, and helps you bring them on a bit earlier. They’re now ready to be planted. Give tubers a sprinkling of water in early spring, and they’ll start to produce young shoots in April. Discard any tubers that look diseased or damaged. Dig a planting hole, making sure it isn’t too deep. The shoots are still delicate, and you don’t want to damage them. Gently pour coarse sand over the tubers; this prevents them from rotting and it’s also a great slug repellent. Backfill with soil and add a ring of sand to mark the planting spot. It’s also another useful means of combating those pesky slugs and snails. Write labels for each dahlia cultivar and place them correctly next to each plant; a foolproof way to remember what you’ve planted in a few months’ time.
Lily Bulbs Canna Lily bulbs will die in frosts, so wait until another frost is unlikely before planting. This might mean that you plant in early March or mid-April depending on your zone. These beautiful flowers are low maintenance and while they prefer full sun and heat, they can tolerate some shade. Their bright, exotic colors give off a tropical feel that’s the perfect compliment to midsummer entertaining.

THE HIGHWAY CODE: CHANGES YOU NEED TO KNOW Rules for all types of road users have been updated in The Highway Code to improve the safety of people walking, cycling and riding horses. Effective from January 2022. 1. Hierarchy of road users
The introduction section of The Highway Code has been updated to include 3 new rules about the new ‘hierarchy of road users’. The hierarchy places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. It does not remove the need for everyone to behave responsibly. It’s important that all road users: • Are aware of The Highway Code. • Are considerate to other road users. • Understand their responsibility for the safety of others.
2. People crossing the road at junctions The updated code clarifies that:
• When people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way. • If people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way. • People driving, riding a motorcycle or cycling must give way to people on a zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing. A parallel crossing is similar to a zebra crossing, but includes a cycle route alongside the black and white stripes.
3. Walking, cycling or riding in shared spaces
There is new guidance in the code about routes and spaces which are shared by people walking, cycling and riding horses.
5. Overtaking when driving or cycling
You may cross a double-white line if necessary (provided the road is clear) to overtake someone cycling or riding a horse if they are travelling at 10 mph or less (Rule 129). There is updated guidance on safe passing distances and speeds for people driving or riding a motorcycle when overtaking vulnerable road users, including: • Leaving at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) when overtaking people cycling at speeds of up to 30mph, and giving them more space when overtaking at higher speeds. • Passing people riding horses or driving horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allowing at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) of space. • Allowing at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) of space and keeping to a low speed when passing people walking in the road (for example, where there’s no pavement). Wait behind them and do not overtake if it’s unsafe or not possible to meet these clearances.
People cycling passing slower-moving or stationary traffic
The updated code confirms that people cycling may pass slower-moving or stationary traffic on their right or left. They should proceed with caution as people driving may not be able to see them. This is particularly important: • On the approach to junctions. • When deciding whether it is safe to pass lorries or other large vehicles.
People cycling, riding a horse or driving a horse-drawn vehicle should respect the safety of people walking in these spaces, but people walking should also take care not to obstruct or endanger them. People cycling are asked to: • Not pass people walking, riding a horse or driving a horse-drawn vehicle closely or at high speed, particularly from behind. • Slow down when necessary and let people walking know they are there (for example, by ringing their bell). • Remember that people walking may be deaf, blind or partially sighted. • Not pass a horse on the horse’s left.

4. Positioning in the road when cycling
The code recommends that people cycling should proceed as if they were driving a vehicle where there are no separate cyclist facilities. This includes positioning themselves in the centre of their chosen lane, where they feel able to do this safely. This is to: • Make them as visible as possible. • Avoid being overtaken where this would be dangerous.
There is updated guidance for people cycling about positioning themselves which includes: • Riding in the centre of their lane on quiet roads, in slower-moving traffic and at the approach to junctions or road narrowings. • Keeping at least 0.5 metres (just over 1.5 feet) away from the kerb edge (and further where it is safer) when riding on busy roads with vehicles moving faster than them.
People cycling in groups
The updated code explains that people cycling in groups: • Should be considerate of the needs of other road users when riding in groups. • Can ride 2 abreast – and it can be safer to do so, particularly in larger groups or when accompanying children or less experienced riders. People cycling are asked to be aware of people driving behind them and allow them to overtake (for example, by moving into single file or stopping) when it’s safe to do so.
People cycling passing parked vehicles
The updated code explains that people cycling should: • Take care when passing parked vehicles, leaving enough room (a door’s width or 1 metre) to avoid being hit if a car door is opened. • Watch out for people walking into their path.
The code has been updated to clarify that when turning into or out of a side road, people cycling should give way to people walking who are crossing or waiting to cross. There is new advice about new special cycle facilities at some junctions. Some junctions now include small cycle traffic lights at eye-level height, which may allow cyclists to move separately from or before other traffic. People cycling are encouraged to use these facilities where they make their journey safer and easier. There is also new guidance for people cycling at junctions with no separate facilities.
People cycling turning right The code now includes advice for people cycling using junctions where signs and markings tell them to turn right in 2 stages. These are: • Stage 1 – when the traffic lights turn green, go straight ahead to the location marked by a cycle symbol and turn arrow on the road, and then stop and wait. • Stage 2 – when the traffic lights on the far side of the junction (now facing the people cycling) turn green, complete the manoeuvre.
People cycling have priority when going straight ahead at junctions The code clarifies that when people cycling are going straight ahead at a junction, they have priority over traffic waiting to turn into or out of a side road, unless road signs or markings indicate otherwise. People cycling are asked to watch out for people driving intending to turn across their path, as people driving ahead may not be able to see them.

Not all superhero’s wear capes The Friendship Project for Children recruits volunteers who are matched with local children in need of support for friendship and fun. The volunteers take out the child for a couple of hours a week and enjoy outings together. These special friendships have seen improvements in the self-esteem and confidence of the children. Volunteer Older Friend Simon explained: “I was interested in making a difference to something bigger than my own existence and I love kids and think that childhood is a magical time. I have wanted to do something like working with The Friendship Project for many years but have always put it off or to be honest, been too worried about being able to commit the time or say the wrong thing. Over the last year, I have looked at what makes me happy and helping others makes me feel happy. I am so glad I contacted the Project. Like most worries in life, the worries never actually arise, they are just in your mind!” Simon was matched with John, who was referred to the Project by a local primary school. They enjoy regular outings, which they plan together. They have been ten pin bowling, swimming, going out to eat, as well as simple outings to the park. "The Project is truly a fantastic idea for both the volunteer and child. It is run very well, with quality, prompt support when needed. The idea of taking someone else’s child out for a few hours seems strange to most. I didn’t really see what a few hours each week could do. My Younger Friend tells me he now has a best friend and that he has never really felt like he had one before. I can now see the difference I am making.” adds Gerry. John’s parents commented: “Simon is a really nice man and John loves going out with him. Simon does so much with him. John is always in a really good mood when he comes back from his outings”. “You learn so much about yourself and how much you grow in confidence and self-worth. Being such an important person in someone else’s life, outside of your normal existence and having something so special, that is just yours with them.” Simon concludes. About the Friendship Project
The Friendship Project for Children is a Warwickshire based charity supporting children aged between 6 and 16 across the county, who are in need of some extra support. Founded in 1986, the charity matches ‘Younger Friends’ with ‘Older Friends’ who provide the children with regular fun, undivided attention and ongoing friendship for a few hours each week. Often, the activities which they enjoy together are things the children wouldn’t otherwise get to experience. It can be as simple as a walk in the park or baking cakes together, or more of a treat like a trip to the cinema, swimming or wall climbing. This simple concept has seen the children’s self-esteem grow and even improved their attainment and behaviour at school and in the home. To date the charity has supported around 1500 children, who are all referred to the Friendship Project by children’s services.

Bilton Bowls Club is situated half a mile from Cawston and is always looking to increase its membership for both ladies and gentlemen from players with no experience to those who have played before. We also wish to encourage young members to take up the sport. For members that still work we host matches both in the evenings and weekends. Our current members are always available to teach those who have never played before, suitable shoes and equipment is available to borrow. The club is licensed and has catering facilities. Independent of bowls, our club hall is available to hire for public functions. Weather permitting, we will be hosting an Open Week.
