Editors Letter...

Hi everyone and welcome a special ONLINE April Edition.... them through these difficult times is to buy vouchers fro them. Our local economy is definitely struggling right now and its only us, local people, that can help it once this is all over. As a small business myself (about to celebrate my 15 year of trading in May) I am also now temporarily closing Anne my business in the hope that I can recover afterwards too.

For now I will be managing my 3 home schoolers As well as lots of information, suggestions, signposts and getting things ticked off my ‘to do’ list and for help and things to do whilst on Lockdown I continuing to help in my local community as I have have also still included all our advertisers. (There been since lockdown started. I’m now off shopping has been no charge to anyone for this edition, It’s for 3 local vulnerbale residents. something I wanted to do to help as many people Stay safe and my very best wishes to you all, as I can.) Staying well when social distancing

We’ve created some top tips to support those who are undertaking social distancing to get through the next few weeks.

The government has now advised that if you have an underlying health condition(s) or if you are aged 70 or older, you should be social distancing for up to 12 weeks. To some people this can seem quite daunting. Not being able to go about your daily routine or undertake the activities you normally do, after a while, could become quite stressful.

We know that during this period it’s really important that you look after your mental and emotional wellbeing as well as your physical health.

Establish a daily routine. Routines provide structure and purpose.

Balance your weekly routine so you have a good mix of work (activities that have to be done), rest and leisure.

Think about which regular activities that are most important to you. What are the important elements to these? Can you adapt them to carry out in the home?

For example, instead of a class, following an online strength and balance routine.

Set daily goals to provide purpose and a sense of achievement. This might include working through that list of the things you keep meaning to do but never get round to?

Identify the triggers that make you feel low and look for ways to reduce or manage them.

6

Talk with family, friends and neighbours to help them understand how you feel and how they can help. Can they talk you through using apps on your mobile phone, for instance?

Take care of yourself. Eat and drink healthily with plenty of fruit, vegetables and water to support your immune function and energy levels. For more information see the BDA website.

Avoid staying still for too long. Exercise and regular movement will maintain fitness and strength. If you are working from home, take breaks and eat away from your “desk.”

Have a good sleep routine. If you are struggling, try avoiding tea and coffee in the late afternoon and evening, take a bath, using blackout curtains, listening to gentle music or deep breathing exercises.

Keep in touch. Arrange to speak to someone most days on the phone, through social media or over the garden fence. Age UK and Silverline have people to speak to.

Corona Virus E Facebook Support Groups There are a number of local people who are helping out in their community offering services like shopping, collecting prescriptions, dog walking or even just a chat. These groups are working hard to drop leaflets through the doors of all streets in their areas and have already run a number of errands for those that are vulnerable or self isolating due to the virus. Prepare beds for the growing season. Dig in a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well-rotted manure. You can also work in a general-purpose fertiliser, such as pelleted chicken manure, or fish, blood and bone.

Check your container plants aren’t drying out - the warmer weather will quickly affect soil moisture levels.

Now’s a good time to buy perennials – there’s a huge selection of one-litre plants available.

In mild areas plant dahlia tubers outside.

Elizabeth Beetham BSc Holistic Nutritionist, Natural Health and Well Being Journalist shares her philosophy on Good Posture to Help Alleviate Back Pain Are you sitting comfortably? I am smiling as I write this because whenever I give a seminar on health and get to this topic the whole audience immediate sits up straight. Without fail, as soon as the word posture is out of my mouth - there they go, all sitting up beautifully and listening intently!

An aspect of posture that you may not be aware of is that how we hold our bodies can immediately change our physiological state. Yes, your posture affects your emotions.

When I look at an audience, I easily identify the delegates who are feeling unhappy or depressed.

They are sitting hunched over, often with their arms holding their body to protect themselves, sometimes even with their heads down; withdrawn from their present environment. It is one of the reasons I talk about posture because within a few seconds of you creating a strong posture you begin to feel stronger. Holding your body straight and strong will immediately give you the strength your need. We cannot feel depressed with good posture; give it a try and let me know how you get on.

Good posture is essential for good health especially as we age. Sitting hunched over a computer and sitting at your desk for hours without walking around is a major health risk. We are not designed to sit at a desk and unfortunately a huge number of people do not exercise at all which exacerbates the problems.

Becoming conscious about how you sit and for how long is a good start because you will soon realise the damage you are doing to your spine. Poor posture is another one of those bad habits which we all have, and which can cause or aggravate back and neck pain and damage spinal structures. The good news is that we can help reverse these problems and it’s not difficult to change your present slouching – it just takes a few minutes thought. The other good news is that good posture makes you feel better and can immediately make you look younger so well worth the effort involved!

To avoid on-going pain from poor posture, make sure you have an ergonomic chair at your desk if you are working at a computer. Importantly, you should ensure that get up from your desk at least every hour for a few minutes to walk around and stretch your spine. Movement is fundamental to being human so remember to “Move that Body!”

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from back pain the following are alternative therapies that I recommend and a little background to each.

We can find specialist help from Chiropractors, or Osteopaths. Always consult your doctor prior to undertaking any alternative therapy. A good

diet can also help alleviate pain by reducing inflammation and raising levels of serotonins.

Include bright coloured vegetables and fruit, oatmeal, seeds and oily fish in your diet.

A Chiropractor is trained to detect abnormal movement in the body’s joints which results in pain.

The causes can be poor posture, over exertion, injuries and stress. The joint is manipulated in order to correct its movement. When our joints move correctly and freely, they should not hurt.

Manipulation or adjustment by a chiropractor is a very quick and controlled movement and quite often produces the sound of a pop or click which can be quite scary but is normal. Adjustments are usually administered quickly and do not hurt.

It is important to choose a qualified Chiropractor who is registered by the British Chiropractic Association. This will guarantee that your practitioner has trained for a minimum of four years full time; including extensive study of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and other relevant subjects. Chiropractors are required by law to register with the General Chiropractic Council.

Osteopathy which is a form of therapy based on massage and manipulation. For many people there is some confusion concerning the difference between these alternative therapies. The history of Osteopathy is very similar to Chiropractic and both schools were first established in North America.

The procedures Osteopaths use to diagnose, treat and promote healthy functioning in a person are the correction of mechanical imbalances within and between the structures of the body. Structures include the muscles, bones, ligaments, organs, and fascia. The fascia is a very thin layer of tissue that is found under the skin. Correcting the mechanical imbalances in the structures helps to restore, maintain, and improve the harmonious working of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, promoting health and alleviating pain.

Getting the best health outcomes for local people...

Ajit Barot, Barrie Bemand and Barry Cockcroft are members of the Rugby Health & Care Improvement Forum (RHCIF), a small group of retired NHS & Social Services professionals. They spread information about the NHS and Social Care and the need for long term investment & planning to our MP, leaders of the local NHS, other politicians and the press.

Their aim is to support our NHS & Social Care and try to keep the general public informed.

Having lived in Rugby for over forty years I am well aware that when it comes to our healthcare, we can be fiercely independent, but the reality is that the provision of high quality services and better outcomes for patients is now intrinsically linked to that of the populations around us.

For many years there was a real determination to retain all services at St Cross but that is now out of the question, for many reasons, but our local hospital has become a significant part of the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHC&W).

Modern medical treatment is now delivered in a much more technological environment with a greater degree of specialist skills being utilised. Some of this technology and special skills could not be fully utilised in such a small unit as St Cross.

Nearly 85% of the non-urgent orthopaedic surgery provided across the Trust is carried out on the St Cross site and to a very high standard. People from across Warwickshire travel to Rugby for hip and knee replacements, CT and MRI scans as well as some cardiac procedures confident that the outcomes achieved by a very high performing team will deliver those, so important, good outcomes.

Across the country the concentration of expertise in centres for treating acute and hyper acute stroke services has also demonstrated how more lives can be saved.

There are major opportunities to further develop services on the St Cross site that will benefit the people of Rugby and surrounding areas.

The Coventry site of UHC&W, widely known as Walsgrave, was built as part of the ill conceived Private Finance Initiative which means that new capital investment on that site is very difficult. St Cross does not suffer from the same blight which gives the Trust much more flexibility to develop services. The Trust has plans to grow services on the St Cross site and we think there will be exciting developments over the next few years although for some things people will have to travel to other parts of the county to access the highest quality care.

I often hear people complain about the travel times across Warwickshire, especially when using public transport, but these distances pale into insignificance compared to the journeys people in eg, Cornwall or the Highlands have to make.

What is important is the outcome.

Healthcare is changing, populations are growing and ageing, we have to understand that the most important thing is the outcome and even though more and more treatments are being offered closer to home, for some more specialised services it may mean more travel and more linkage between public transport and the healthcare system. But let us try and change the mindset. Rugby, Coventry, Nuneaton and South Warwickshire are part of one healthcare community, with very specialised treatment sometimes being provided even further away, so lets help people improve services for everyone and not continue the old fashioned Rugby versus Coventry way of thinking but perhaps focus more on working with our neighbouring communities to deliver the best outcomes for all.

No Bake Mini Egg Cheescake

This easiest ever No Bake Easter Mini Egg Cheesecake is packed with Easter chocolate treats. A crumbly biscuit base, topped with whipped cream and cream cheese, an absolutely delicious dessert. I won’t bore you with the calorie content, but if you are watching your weight only have a small e cak sliver. ese e Ch Ingredients g 280 g Digestive Chocolate Biscuits 140 g Butter Unsalted, melted 360 g Mini Cadbury’s Mini Eggs plus 270g to decorate (about 7 small bags in total) 550 ml Double cream plus 50ml to decorate (lightly whipped until it forms soft peaks) 140 g Icing Sugar sifted 2 x 280g Tubs of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Full fat Juice of half a lemon Crush the biscuits until they look like lumpy sand.

Mix with the melted butter and press into your 7” tin.

Chop the 360g of the Mini Eggs in half.

Combine the whipped cream, icing sugar, cream cheese, lemon juice and chopped Mini Eggs. Fold in gently until fully combined.

Smooth on top of the biscuit base and flatten the top with the back of a spoon or a palette knife if you have one.

Chill for 2 hours or even better, over night.

Plop the remaining whipped cream on top of the cheesecake and pile on the remaining Mini Eggs (some chopped in half).

Share and enjoy.

Rice Crisps Easter Treats

This recipe is quick and easy to make and perfect as a sweet Easter gift. You can make various shapes depending on the cookie cutters you use. I made one large duck from the entire recipe, but if you use smaller cookie cutters youll get a much greater yield.

Have fun! I suggest packaging the hardened treats in cellophane baggies and tying them with decorative ribbon for a cute presentation. Note please: These need to chill for 1 1/2 hours.

1⁄4 teaspoon oil (for greasing the cookie cutters) or 1/4 teaspoon cooking spray (for greasing the cookie cutters) assorted cookie cutter 100 g dark chocolate (I used 70%) 60 g crispy brown rice cereal (unsweetened) mini chocolate candy (like M&M’s for decoration if you like) 2 tbsp olive, sunflower or coconut oil

Lightly grease the insides of the cookie cutters using either oil or cooking spray.

Place them on a paper-lined baking sheet.

Melt chocolate over a warm-water bath or in the microwave.

Stir in brown rice crispies.

Spread mixture into cookie cutters pressing down lightly.

Decorate your treats with mini chocolate candies if desired.

Allow to harden for 1 1/2 hours.

Carefully remove the cookie cutters.

New educational chapter on the horizon for Houlton

Rugby Borough Council granted planning permission for Houlton School on Friday 27 September, enabling works to begin on Rugby’s newest secondary school.

The new facility will see Houlton’s Grade II-listed Rugby Radio Station building transformed into a six form entry secondary Studio 7, The Locks, Hillmorton school, providing nearly 1000 school places, plus a sixth form.
