Postojna Postojna is located on the Southern Railway line and has been accessible by train for about 200 years. With the relaunch of the Southern Railway

connection from Vienna to Trieste, you can travel to Postojna without changing trains. The ÖBB Nightjet Munich - Rijeka also stops in Postojna.

Southern Railway

The Historic Southern Railway Today, the term Southern Railway applies to the ÖBB routes from Vienna via Graz to Spielfeld-Straß and from Bruck an der Mur via Klagenfurt to Tarvis.

Ideas and concepts for a Southern Railway were already developed in 1829. Even then, people were aware of the importance of a direct connection from Vienna to the Adriatic. Since there were signi cant topographical obstacles on the route, it was realized in stages. As early as 1849, one could travel by train from Vienna to Ljubljana. To cross the Semmering, one still had to change to the

stagecoach. The rst standard-gauge mountain railway in Europe, the Semmering Railway planned

by Carl von Ghega, was opened to traf c in 1854.

This impressive section of the Southern Railway has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1998.

The Vienna - Trieste route was opened in 1857.

The evening edition of the Austrian-Imperial Vienna Newspaper, (No. 169) from Monday, July 27, 1857, contained the following article: „ F ro m t h e I m p e r i a l - R o y a l G o v e r n o r s h i p Presidency in Trieste to the Imperial-Royal Ministries of the Interior and Commerce. Trieste, July 27.

His Imperial-Royal Apostolic Majesty arrived here happily this morning at 10 o'clock, opening the Ljubljana-Trieste railway line, and most graciously deigned to perform the ceremonial laying of the nal stone, after which Their Highest Majesty proceeded to the Highest lodging quarters amid the jubilation of the population.“

The Facility

In front of the entrance to the grotto, there is a spacious park area. Here, you can comfortably relax before and after visiting the cave and enjoy your stay. On the grounds, there is also the

Modrijan homestead, which has a mill and houses an interesting ethnological exhibition. Grilled sh is also available here.

and the Postojna Cave in particular. The EXPO is the largest exhibition of its kind worldwide.

The Proteus Cave with a vivarium of cave animals.

One could certainly describe the cave as an underground zoo or animal park. Here, you can nd the mysterious inhabitants of the local caves.

The most famous is the Proteus, also called the olm. It lives exclusively in the Dinaric Karst and can be admired here.

The Cave

With the double-track electric train, you go from the main entrance of the cave into the interior of the mountain. The entry into the mountain is already breathtaking, and you should de nitely have your camera ready in the train. The train was opened in

1872 and offers visitors a comfortable ride to the point where the guided tours begin.

Electric lighting in the Postojna Grotto has existed since 1883. The cave also houses the world's only "Cave Post Of ce," which has existed since 1899.

The tour, which by the way can also be done with strollers or wheelchairs, lasts about 90 minutes. The guided tours are conducted in four languages.

Additionally, visitors can access digital audio guides in fteen languages.

The entire route, including the train ride, is about 5.2 km long. In total, about 24 km are developed, and interested visitors can therefore go on further inviting discovery tours. These special tours are tailored to the needs and abilities of the participants.

Predjama Castle

Through excavations, the history of Lueg Castle, which stands nine kilometers from the Postojna Stalactite Cave, can be traced back to the Paleolithic era. The construction of the castle began in the 12th century. In 1570, the current three- to four-story building was erected. A visit to the castle shows in a very impressive way what the life of a robber knight might have been like.

A special feature of the castle is the secret passage that ends after 38 meters on the mountain summit. During sieges, new food supplies were brought in through this "back entrance." Especially Erasmus von Luegg enjoyed throwing fresh fruits and roasted ox meat at the besiegers.

Slovenia's second-longest karst cave, which branches into four levels.

The show cave is 700 meters long. During the tour, which lasts about 45 minutes, visitors must climb about 250 steps. Since there is no electric light in the cave, each visitor receives their individual lamp.

Predjama was the optimal refuge for the robber knight Erasmus von Luegg, who defended the castle for over a year against the captain of Trieste.

According to legend, betrayal led to the robber knight being killed in 1484 at the privy by stone cannonballs.

The Quiet Little Place If one believes the stories, this is the "quiet little place" where Erasmus von Luegg met his death.

Little Church of the Sorrowful Mother of God In front of the castle, in the village of Predjama, stands the little church and the hollow Erasmus linden tree, which was planted on Erasmus's grave.

Along the path to the cave entrance, you can nd a good selection of restaurants and cafés. Here, you can relax, enjoy a hearty menu, a cool drink, ice cream, or coffee and cake.

Overnight Stay

The four-star Hotel Jama was recently completely renovated and offers the highest comfort. The house has an excellent restaurant as well as excellent facilities for meetings and exhibitions. It is located in close proximity to the entrance of the stalactite cave, but still in the midst of nature.
