Lienz is connected hourly with Villach towards the east to Fortezza/Franzensfeste and Innsbruck to the west. Once a day there is also a direct IC connection (Lienzer Dolomiten) from Vienna Main Station.

winter. The Hubertus Lake is located about 10 minutes' walk above the Sternalm.

If you take the Schlossbergbahn up to the Hochstein, the Moosalm Lake can be reached on foot in just under a

quarter of an hour. The path leads uphill from the exit point towards the forest.

East Tyrolean Sled (Osttirodler)

The Osttirodler was built on the Hochstein some time ago. Here you can test the state of your nerves. The 2.7 kilometer

long track with steep curves, jumps and waves is concluded with a circular ride. The track is open all year round.

Since 1988, the town hall of Lienz has been housed in Liebburg Castle. Because it became too cold and uncomfortable for the Wolkenstein-Rodenegg brothers at

Bruck Castle, they had Liebburg built in 1606, which they inhabited until 1654.

For many centuries, the city wall was not only a protective barrier but also the boundary between the citizens and the lower classes of the people. At the beginning of 1800,

almost the entire city wall and especially the city gates were demolished. Today, only a few remnants bear witness to that time.

The Johannesplatz was originally located outside the city walls. Around it, the bourgeois life of Lienz developed. Here,

people worked, traded, and stopped at the numerous taverns and inns.

In this striking building, there is a film and photo studio and event rooms of the IN-KU-Z (Innovative Cultural Center).

Churches

Franciscan Monastery (Franziskaner Kloster)

After Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Franciscan monastery in 1785, the Franciscans were housed in the Carmelite

monastery. During a visit, one should definitely admire the cloister with paintings around 1700 and the Lourdes grotto.

Saint Ulrich (Heiliger Ulrich)

Slightly below the parish church of St. Ulrich, one can see the foundations of an early Christian church, dated to about the 5th century AD. The parish and pilgrimage church of St.

Ulrich is located in the municipality of Lavant, about 2 kilometers from Aguntum.

Here, 300 Cossacks are buried in 28 graves. The story of their death leads to the end of the Second World War. The events that led to the death of the Cossacks are referred to as the "Lienz Cossack Tragedy" or "Tragedy on the Drau".

The history of the church of Saint Anthony of Padua dates back to 1556. From 1660 to 1668, the church at the end of the main square was rebuilt. Since 1945, the house of

worship has been available to the Greek Orthodox faith community.

Bruck Castle

Bruck Castle (Schloss Bruck)

The castle of the Counts of Gorizia has served as the city museum of Lienz since 1943. In the vicinity of the Schlossberg, there are finds that prove a settlement of the

area over 3,000 years old. In the city museum, a large number of paintings by Albin Egger-Lienz are exhibited. The museum is open from May to October.

The Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity looks approximately as Count Leonhard of Gorizia had it furnished in the 1480s. The painter Simon von Taisten is the artist who decorated the

sacred space. The fresco "Throne of Grace" in the apse vault was created in 1452 by Nikolaus Kenntner.

Egger-Lienz

Albin Egger-Lienz was born in 1868 in Dölsach near Lienz. In Lienz, there is the largest collection of the painter. His works show the fate of rural people between life and death. He

depicts the horrors of war and the isolation of people; thus he became a admonisher of humanity.

Local Transport

Train

Lienz is directly accessible from Vienna. From the train station, trains also regularly go towards South Tyrol (Franzensfeste), from where you can reach southern Italy or north towards Tyrol and Germany.

Buses

The central bus station is located directly at the Lienz train station. From here, the Tyrol Transport Association offers a dense network of connections. In the regional area, many hotels offer their own ski buses in winter, and in summer,

local taxis offer affordable rides to the starting points of the many hiking trails.
