Lake Garda

Lake Garda measures 346 meters at its deepest point. With an area of 369.98 km², it is Italy's largest lake. The north of the lake surface is in Trentino-South Tyrol, the west in Lombardy, and the east belongs to Veneto.

The over 50 kilometer long Lake Garda is bordered in the north by the more than 2,000 meter high Lake Garda mountains and extends at the southern end into the northern Italian plain.

In the surroundings of Lake Garda there are some very renowned wine-growing areas: South of Desenzano del

Garda is the Lugana area. From there come a dry white wine and the Lugana Spumante. Bardolino and Soave wines grow east of Lake Garda. Between Lake Garda and Verona lies the Valpolicella region.

In the north, the Sarca River ﬂows into Lake Garda at Torbole. In Peschiera del Garda, it leaves the lake as the Mincio, to then ﬂow further south into the Po.

Desenzano

Desenzano del Garda

In the local dialect, Desenzano del Garda is called Dezensà. With just under 30,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town on Lake Garda. Desenzano is part of the province of Brescia and is located in Lombardy. Near Desenzano, traces of the Polada culture were found. The ﬁnds in the peat pit about 4 kilometers away date from the early to middle Bronze Age of northern Italy. In any case, one should also visit the Villa Romana. The villa was accidentally discovered in 1921 by a carpenter who wanted to build a house at this location.

High above the town, one can still admire the remains of a medieval castle. The life of Desenzano pulsates around the picturesque Old Harbor and Piazza Malvezzi. Numerous restaurants await visitors by the water.

In summer, artists perform again and again on the ﬂoating platform in the Old Harbor.

On Piazza Malvezzi in the Old Harbor stands a monument to the founder of the Order of Saint Ursula (Ursulines).

Santa Maria Maddalena is the cathedral of Desenzano del Garda.

Peschiera del Garda

Over 10,000 inhabitants live in the town, which is located in the province of Verona. The fortress of Peschiera del Garda was part of the Venetian defense system from the 15th to the 17th century. The fortress was laid out in a star shape. The walls of the building are over 2 kilometers long, making it the largest military installation on Lake Garda. The military is still housed inside the fortress today. A visit to the inner complex is possible by prior appointment.

The Mincio, the only outﬂow of Lake Garda, leaves Peschiera del Garda heading south. The ÖBB Nightjet also

stops in the town. About 20 km east lies Verona and 35 km south one reaches Mantua. The town of Peschiera del Garda has been advertising for years that it is a barrier-free town.

The village of Cisano is located between Lazise and Bardolino, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. In addition to the famous olive oil museum, one can also ﬁnd an interesting wine museum in the hills above the town. In Cisano di Bardolino, the ﬁsh and ornithology museum also offers a welcome change.

Between Cisano and Bardolino there is a ﬂat and comfortable path along Lake Garda, which is also very popular with cyclists. The two villages are about 30 minutes' walk apart.

Garda

The small northern Italian municipality has just over 4,000 inhabitants. Garda belongs to the province of Verona and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. The town gave the lake its name. The name "Garda" probably originated during the Migration Period. "Garda" is related to the Germanic-German "Garten" (a protected area marked out with rods). A fortress once stood here, after which the place and the lake were named.

The parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore dates from the 10th century. It is the oldest church in the region. Garda has a beautiful and interesting old town as well as a wonderful lakeside promenade that offers numerous places to relax and refresh.

Sigurtà Park

Sigurtà Park (Park Sigurtà)

The Parco Giardino Sigurtà is a private park accessible for an entrance fee in Valeggio sul Mincio. The park is located about 10 kilometers south of Peschiera del Garda. The park was named after its owner and renovator Giuseppe Carlo Sigurtà. The ﬂoral splendor blooms every year in March and April. At this time, the "Tulipanomania" takes place. After the Dutch Keukenhof, this is the second largest tulip bloom in Europe. When admiring the 600-meter-long rose avenue, one also has a fantastic view of the Scaliger Castle of Valeggio located outside the park.

The park covers 60 hectares, is 1.3 kilometers long and has an average width of 450 meters. The oldest tree is a 400year-old oak. Water lilies and lotus ﬂowers can be found on a total of 18 water surfaces.

Every year in June, a festival in honor of the "love knots" takes place on the Visconti Bridge. About 4,000 guests have space at two 600-meter-long tables. Since 1993, this feast has taken place on the third Tuesday in June.

The "love knots" are those hand-ﬁlled tortellini for which the city is famous. On the occasion of the festival, 100 female and male cooks take care of the catering for the guests, 300 waiters serve about 600,000 tortellini. In total,

500 kilograms of Grana Padano cheese, 10,000 eggs and 800 kilograms of ﬂour are processed on this day.

Since 1975, Gardaland has offered breathtaking relaxation and fun for the whole family on about 33 hectares.

Gardaland is only 2 km from Peschiera del Garda train station.

Every 30 minutes, a free shuttle bus runs from Peschiera del Garda train station to the park and back.

Sealife is the largest aquarium network on earth. 50 aquariums in 17 countries impressively show the most beautiful animals. Sealife has been present at Lake Garda since 2008.

Every 30 minutes, a free shuttle bus runs from Peschiera del Garda train station to the park and back.

Boat Trips

Scheduled services run from Desenzano to Peschiera and all year round the car ferry from Maderno to Torri del Benaco, in summer also from Limone to Malcesine. Fast hydrofoils and catamarans provide quick connections between the individual shore towns.

Alternatively, one can enjoy the atmosphere of Lake Garda in peace with the leisurely motor ship.
