Churches

Klagenfurter Dom

The full designation of Klagenfurt Cathedral is the Cathedral and Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul.

This esteemed place of worship boasts a history stretching back to 1581. Throughout the centuries, the cathedral has undergone numerous renovations and has been cared for by various religious orders. The latest restoration was carried out between 1990 and 1991.

One of its most remarkable features is the ceiling fresco depicting the Assumption of Mary, which, having suffered damage from the roof, was painstakingly restored in 1927 and 1928.

Heiligengeistkirche

The Church of the Holy Spirit on Heiligengeistplatz in Klagenfurt stands as one of the city’s oldest surviving churches, with its first recorded mention dating back to 1355.

This modest late-Gothic hall church, distinguished by its traditional saddle roof and Baroque onion dome, is a favoured setting for concerts and captivates visitors with its peaceful, almost concealed position in the heart of the old town.

Johanneskirche

The Protestant St. John's Church, situated on Pfarrplatz in Klagenfurt and commonly referred to as the Gustav Adolf Church, was constructed in 1901 in the Neo-Gothic style. Its tall, slender tower and distinctive red brick façade make it a notable landmark within the city centre. The interior, bright and filled with natural light thanks to the tall pointed-arch windows and original wooden gallery, exudes a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Today, the church functions as a venue for both worship services and concerts.

Pfarrkirche St. Egid

Situated in the very heart of Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, the main parish church of St. Egid stands upon the historic grounds once occupied by the Church of St. Mary, first recorded in 1255. After enduring catastrophic fires and a powerful earthquake, construction of the current parish church commenced in 1692.

Renowned for its splendid vaulted ceiling frescoes, the parish church is especially distinguished by the Fuchs Chapel, the creation of the celebrated artist Ernst Fuchs. Professor Fuchs devoted more than twenty years to exploring one of the most intricate biblical themes – the Apocalypse.

The tower of Klagenfurt’s oldest church is widely regarded as one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Boasting a distinctive blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture, the church’s tower rises to 91 metres, making it the tallest church tower in Carinthia. From its summit, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic vista of the city and the majestic Alps beyond.

Constructed between 1736 and 1741 in the elegant Baroque style, it is renowned for its distinctive onion dome and pristine white façade, which can be admired from a great distance. Together with the Calvary and the Stations of the Cross, it forms one of Carinthia’s most exquisite Baroque ensembles.
